even in a pandemic 2020 St. Charles (Tri-City) Corps Community Center Annual Report
The Salvation Army’s mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in His name without discrimination. The phrase “meet human needs” took on a whole new meaning and intensity in 2020. As the pandemic dawned, the needs in our communities changed – and grew exponentially. Suddenly our neighbors needed PPE, emergency deliveries of groceries, spiritual and emotional care, and help paying their rent as COVID-19 took away jobs and paychecks. As requests for help skyrocketed throughout St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, and central Kane County, we were only able to meet those needs thanks to our faithful donors. In a year of unprecedented need, you enabled us to keep Doing the Most Good.
Dear friends: 2020 brought so many challenges. Many businesses have struggled to find ways to stay afloat or, tragically, have gone under. This translates to unprecedented numbers of people who are unemployed or underemployed. Many are coming face-to-face with issues they have never had to deal with before. The question for them has turned from “What’s for dinner?” to “Is there enough for everyone to have dinner if I pay this bill?” We have heard many stories from people who are humbled because they have had to ask for assistance for the first time. Many of them are used to being the ones who help and donate. We at The Salvation Army St. Charles (Tri-City) Joe K. Anderson Corps Community Center are also humbled by the opportunity we have to be a place that not only offers help, but also hope. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our tri-city community who have donated their time, talents, and treasures, we have been able to roll up our collective sleeves and Do the Most Good despite the challenges. With the health and safety of our guests, volunteers, and staff at the forefront, we continue to meet human needs without discrimination. While this year offered challenges, it also offered new and interesting opportunities. Families have figured out new ways to visit one another while staying socially distanced. Neighbors are checking in on each other and even gathering for long conversations from opposite sides of their driveways. We are all concerned about one another, and that concern is a great and generous thing! One new opportunity we added in 2020 is that the St. Charles (Tri-City) corps now offers church services on our Facebook page every Sunday in addition to our in-person services, as safety restrictions allow. All of us here at The Salvation Army St. Charles (Tri-City) Joe K. Anderson Corps Community Center consider it a privilege to serve this wonderful community, just as we have for nearly 70 years. With your continued support, The Salvation Army looks forward to another 70 years of Doing the Most Good.
With Gratitude, Lieutenant Scott Smith

HUNGER & NUTRITION
While many of our programs were cancelled out of an abundance of caution, those we could maintain safely quickly changed format. Instead of “shopping” for items they want, food pantry clients pull up to the curb, where a box of food is placed in their trunk or backseat. Despite the challenges, we found creative ways to keep safely serving our neighbors in need.

breathing room Diane, a 62-year-old St. Charles resident, has worked two jobs for the past 11 years. Both were eliminated due to COVID-19. Her husband, also 62, worked at a local school until his underlying health issues made that unwise. Having no income is dire for a couple previously living paycheck to paycheck. Diane’s search for help led her to The Salvation Army. When she met with Lt. Dena Smith at the St. Charles Corps Community Center, she told her, “I live five blocks from you and I didn’t know what

children received Christmas assistance you did.” Thankfully, that’s changed. Diane has since received rent and utility assistance and now frequents the corps’ food pantries. This help has lifted the incredible burden off her back, Diane said. “Do you know how exciting it was to have dessert?” she asked Lt. Dena. After months of buying just enough to stave off hunger, she found the extra variety and volume meaningful. “The pantry is a lifesaver,” she said. “The Army is a place to breathe.”
