even in a pandemic 2020 Rockford and Winnebago County Annual Report
The Salvation Army’s mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in His name without discrimination. The phrase “meet human needs” took on a whole new meaning and intensity in 2020. As the pandemic dawned, the needs in our communities changed – and grew exponentially. Suddenly our neighbors needed PPE, emergency deliveries of groceries, spiritual and emotional care, and help paying their rent as COVID-19 took away jobs and paychecks. As requests for help skyrocketed throughout Rockford and Winnebago County, we were only able to meet those needs thanks to our faithful donors. In a year of unprecedented need, you enabled us to keep Doing the Most Good.
Dear friends: You made a difference. Because of your unprecedented generosity, The Salvation Army of Rockford and Winnebago County was able to meet needs in our community – needs greater than ever before. The impact of your support is astounding. During this unparalleled time, we were able to cover our neighbors’ most essential needs. That includes putting food on the table, keeping a roof over their head, and making sure their lights and heat stayed on. In March, when we received a meeting request from the City of Rockford and Winnebago County requesting assistance with a community-wide pandemic response effort, the scope of our involvement was unknown. To this day, The Salvation Army manages and operates the COVID-19 Emergency Response Donation Center. This collaboration, between the City of Rockford and the Winnebago County Emergency Operations Center, provides resources supporting the community-wide pandemic response. A partnership with the Northern Illinois Food Bank has allowed the Army to provide food assistance to 15,000 households. We are incredibly humbled by the many relationships and partnerships gained and strengthened during the 2020 fiscal year. Volunteers from throughout the region have served arm in arm with us at the Donations Center. In total, more than 500 volunteers provided more than 3,500 volunteer hours. Because of your support and trust, our staff has worked hard in serving those impacted by the pandemic. • The Salvation Army Social Services has remained open and continues to serve by offering food, financial resources for rent/mortgage and utility assistance, emotional support, and spiritual care. • The Army has covered $18,742 in lodging/motel costs to support individuals in congregate living facilities impacted by the virus and unable to find shelter. • Our Friday Night Patrol continues to provide food, socks, and daily essentials to those without a place to lay their heads. • Our Emergency Disaster Services canteen team continues to support our first responders at fires and other disasters. It is truly remarkable how the Lord continues to provide in a big way for our community. We thank you for standing with us as we continued Doing the Most Good in this time of crisis. Many blessings to each of you, Majors Mark and Teri Martsolf

service by the numbers
When COVID-19 struck, we adapted our programs to keep everyone safe
HUNGER & NUTRITION
While many of our programs were cancelled out of an abundance of caution, those we could maintain safely quickly changed format. Instead of “shopping” for items they want, food pantry clients pull up to the curb, where a box of food is placed in their trunk or backseat. Despite the challenges, we found creative ways to keep safely serving our neighbors in need.
a second chance
18,301
“I never thought I’d be in that situation,” Shanticia said of living in a homeless shelter with her three children. “All it took was one layoff to fall short.” That and surviving domestic violence, caring for a daughter with special needs, and coping with her own bipolar disorder. Things had finally started looking up when the pandemic hit. Shanticia sought help from The Salvation Army of Rockford and Winnebago County, where staff provided the family with food, helped Shanticia get a job that gave her the flexibility to care for her daughter, and provided a reference that convinced a landlord to give the family a chance. After the first night in their home, Shanticia’s sons told her, “Mom, we went to sleep smiling.” Shanticia said it was the first night in quite some time she’d slept all night, buoyed by the peace of knowing she had support and a plan for a better future. Now in a more stable place, Shanticia says, “I wouldn’t be as far as I am without The Salvation Army. They gave me a second chance at life.”
