The Salvation Army Elgin 2020 Annual Report

even in a pandemic 2020 Elgin Corps Community Center Annual Report

The Salvation Army’s mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in His name without discrimination. The phrase “meet human needs” took on a whole new meaning and intensity in 2020. As the pandemic dawned, the needs in our communities changed – and grew exponentially. Suddenly our neighbors needed PPE, emergency deliveries of groceries, spiritual and emotional care, and help paying their rent as COVID-19 took away jobs and paychecks. As requests for help skyrocketed throughout Elgin and the surrounding area, we were only able to meet those needs thanks to our faithful donors. In a year of unprecedented need, you enabled us to keep Doing the Most Good.

Dear friends: The end of 2019 allowed us to wrap up the year blessing families with coats, food, Christmas gifts, home goods, rent/utility assistance, and God’s love. Little did we know what was right around the corner. 2020 has provided us as a community the opportunity to rally around those most in need. Here at The Salvation Army Elgin Corps Community Center, the activity within our walls has never stopped. In fact, we mobilized our services to go to those in need. In these moments of despair, your Salvation Army staff and volunteers engaged the marginalized at a high level to ensure that needs were being identified and addressed. This was also a year of transition for our leadership. During the summer, Captains Xavier and Heather Montenegro moved on to the Metro Division Headquarters leadership team, and we, Captains Rich and Linnea Forney, were transferred from Aurora to come serve the Elgin community. In early spring, both the Forneys and Montenegros were brought on to the Incident Command Team for the Greater Chicago Area Emergency Disaster Services, overseeing operations and safety/health in a citywide distribution of food and PPE to COVID quarantined residents throughout greater Chicagoland. Locally, home deliveries to seniors and curbside food distributions increased and social service appointments went virtual, never ceasing to provide rent and utility assistance to the most vulnerable in the pandemic. The Salvation Army also started a hotline for those in isolation needing prayer and encouragement. We look forward to coming back out in engagement with families in our community. You will see increased programming involving music instruction, archery, family movie nights, and community service projects. We look forward to meeting you all, and welcome that cup of coffee visit that’s been put on hold. We want to thank you for opening your heart and resources to help us fulfill our dual mission of preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and meeting human needs in His name without discrimination. We welcome you to partner with us in serving our neighbors in need in our Elgin and surrounding communities. Blessed in Elgin, Captains Rich & Linnea Forney

FOOD & HOME GOODS

While many of our programs were cancelled out of an abundance of caution, those we could maintain safely quickly changed format. Instead of “shopping” for items they want, food pantry clients pull up to the curb, where a box of food is placed in their trunk or backseat. Despite the challenges, we found creative ways to keep safely serving our neighbors in need.

This second box had many wonderful things in it as well. Eggs and fresh produce, things I could not buy for myself. For me, it was like getting the biggest Christmas gift I ever received in my life. Thanks to all of you again.
