Always responding to our

neighbors’ needs

While much of The Salvation Army Metropolitan Division’s focus in 2021 was on the biggest ongoing needs from the pandemic — feeding and rent/utility assistance — we launched several new initiatives to best serve our neighbors in need.

Expanding Care for Homeless Individuals PHOTO BY SCOTT STREBLE

Thanks to a new contract with the City of Chicago, the Army expanded our service to homeless individuals. The new agreement made the Army the centralized shelter intake and referral system for all shelter requests and placements for the City. We also took on all senior well-being checks and crisis responses for individuals impacted by natural disasters or extreme weather.

Supporting Grandparents Who Become Parents The City of Chicago also contracted the Army to take over Grandparents and Older Relatives Raising Children (GORRC). The program offers grandparents and other relatives 55 and older who are raising children support groups, individual and family counseling, and financial assistance with tangible needs, as about 90 percent of these clients live in poverty.

astUilyBDebvngP R The Salvation Army and Nicor Gas launched Shield of Caring, a new program to help individuals and families pay their natural gas utility bills and meet other basic needs. Nicor Gas contributed $5 million to The Salvation Army to distribute to those hardest hit by the pandemic in Nicor Gas’ Illinois service territory. The multiyear partnership is estimated to help more than 25,000 families.

Tackling Hunger in Food Deserts The Chicago Bears, The Salvation Army, and the Greater Chicago Food Depository teamed up to tackle hunger in neighborhoods on the city’s south and west sides known as food deserts. The Chicago Bears Neighborhood Pantries were one-day, market-style pantries where clients chose from a selection of fresh meats, locally grown produce, bread, milk, canned goods, and flowers.

Clothing Homeless Individuals with Dignity In June, the Army’s Evangeline Booth Lodge opened Serenity Kloset, a mini boutique where residents of the homeless shelter can shop for needed clothes. Before the Kloset opened, staff would have to dig through bags of donated items and hand whatever they could find to their clients. Now, residents can “shop” for items — clothes, shoes, accessories — that fit and reflect their personality.

noone goes without A Full Fridge When Juan lost his job due to COVID-19 and affording food became a challenge, this single dad in Hammond, Indiana, was devastated. “The bills were about to bury me six feet under,” he said.

He was thrilled when he learned about the food pantry at our HammondMunster corps. “It meant I was able to feed my kids,” he said. Juan was especially grateful for the staff who YOU HELP E D P R O V I DE helped him find foods to accommodate his diabetes. “The Salvation Army means help when you can’t find it elsewhere.”

A Roof Over Their Heads When Taisha, a single mom of four, lost her job due to COVID, she knew she had to prioritize. Rent comes first, she decided. “I figured, if we can’t get stuff, we can’t get it. I’d rather have a roof over our head.” But as the months without a job went on, she struggled to pay her rent on time — or at all.

Taisha called several agencies for help, and thankfully one of those calls was to our Harbor Light corps. In addition to rent assistance, her caseworker got her involved in our Pathway of Hope program, which helps families become self-sufficient.

“If not for her, I don’t know where we’d be,” Taisha said about her caseworker. “Probably homeless or living in a shelter.” With their finances in order and plans to go back to school to get a better-paying job, Taisha can focus on more hopeful things — like her family’s future.

B OX E S AND OTH E R “I was heartbroken because I didn’t think I would be H O LIDAY MEALS able to get any gifts for my kids this year,” said Rhonda*, a client at our DeKalb corps. “I lost my job due to the pandemic and haven’t been able to get another job because my kids are doing remote learning.”

Thanks to donors to our Angel Tree program, Rhonda was able to select and give her four kids exactly what they wanted. With tears, Rhonda said, “Thank you so much for giving my kids a Christmas this year when I couldn’t.”

Caring for the most vulnerable We took special care of people hit especially hard by the pandemic: children, seniors, and under-resourced neighbors.

Giving Everyone a Shot A bus, a gymnasium, a folding chair in the shade of a tree. We turned all of these into COVID vaccination clinics in some of the area’s least protected neighborhoods, thanks to partnerships with several medical groups.

Guy got vaccinated on a CTA bus parked at our Red Shield Center in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood just days after his cousin died of COVID. Weekly throughout the summer, the VOLUNTEERS DONATED parking lot housed a CTA bus turned into a vaccination clinic, a project of the Chicago Department of Public Health and the CTA.

On several occasions, medical staff from Lawndale Christian Health Center rode along with our Mobile Feeding and Outreach teams as they made their daily stops to feed neighbors in need throughout Chicago. Homeless individuals and passersby took their opportunity to get vaccinated. After one client received his shot, he said, “This is a good thing.”

Delivering Bread, Produce, and Hope The four apartment buildings Glen Tagansky visits monthly are governmentsubsidized housing, mostly inhabited by Russian-speaking seniors. This past year has been especially difficult for this group, a fact that motivates Glen, who pastors the Russian-speaking church services at our Des Plaines corps.

These residents are eager for the boxes full of produce, bread, and other food he delivers, but are even more hungry for something else he brings: conversation. He encourages them to have hope despite being isolated by health concerns and language barriers. They tell him: “Thank you that you don’t forget us.”

A New Take on Summer Camps For decades we have bused children to Wisconsin for summer camp, an experience especially important to children from low-income families.

COVID-19 changed that plan this year, but we didn’t want our children to go without. So, we hosted low-cost Day Camps at our corps in Midway, Waukegan, and East Chicago.

Latrecha, mom of 9- and 6-year-old campers, reported that on a daily basis, “I can’t get in the door without them saying, ‘Can we tell you what we did at camp today?’” After a year of boredom, that’s music to any mom’s ears.

Transforming lives

Our programs offer lifesaving help for our neighbors in need

A Lifeline COVID-19 sent Dana into a downward spiral. Her work hours got cut, which put her family behind on rent, which triggered her depression. They were on the verge of homelessness until our Norridge Citadel covered two months of their back rent.

Then Dana joined our Pathway of Hope program, which helps families become self-sufficient. With help from her caseworker, Dana qualified for a grant to go back to school. “I’m self-sufficient. I’m taking care of my family. I’m happier,” Dana said. “This program literally saved my life.”

Cheating Death Three Times During Eduardo’s 30-year addiction to heroin, he spent 10 years living on the streets, getting many of his meals from our Mobile Feeding Unit. When he OD-ed three days in a row, barely surviving thanks to fast-working EMTs, he finally hit rock bottom.

Turning to the Army for help again, he got clean through our Harbor Light inpatient treatment program. Eduardo’s focus now is staying clean for the rest of his life and helping other addicts. “The Salvation Army was my salvation.”

Ground Zero for Good Kelly makes no excuses for his past, which landed him in prison for 20 years.

He simply wanted to rebuild his life. But no one would hire him — until he went to the Harbor Light corps job-readiness program, where he learned interview skills, phone etiquette, and more.

“I don’t know if I could describe what it meant to me,” Kelly said of the help he received and the job they helped him get. A steady paycheck allowed him to purchase a three-flat building. He lives in one space and rents out the other two.
