Camera Obscura and Handmade Films Workshops

projection, light, and camera-less image creation, emphasizing handmade, analog image-making practices. USC students may sign up for one, two, or all three workshops
Snacks will be provided and participants will be able to keep their camera obscura kits and film loops.
Create a Camera Obscura Workshop 1 | 12–2 PM
Participants will learn about the camera obscura, one of the oldest image-making devices, and then transform the large gallery space into one by installing lenses and apertures and “catching” images on various surfaces.
Make Camera-le Films
Workshop 2 | 2:30–4:30 PM
Working together, participants will scrape, sticker, delaminate, and alter film scraps and found footage to create new work in the form of 16mm loops that can be viewed immediately on portable film projectors.
The Art of Projection Workshop 3 | 5–7 PM
Working with 16mm film loops created in the previous session and other materials, participants will use multiple projectors to explore the capacities and potential of light, space, and creative projection techniques. Loops will be provided for participants who did not attend the second workshop.

Join us for an unforgettable evening of music and conversation with Orville Peck. An award-winning recording artist, songwriter, and actor, Orville has blazed a trail as one of country music’s few openly gay artists. He has released three acclaimed studio albums and collaborated with a roster of industry greats, including Elton John, Willie Nelson, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Trixie Mattel, and many others.
Orville will perform a few songs and participate in a conversation moderated by Jason King, Dean of the USC Thornton School of Music, exploring his creative process, genre-defying work, advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community, and more.

MAJOR BY OGEMDI UDE
MAJOR is a dance theater performance exploring the physicality, history, sociopolitics, and interiority of majorette dance, a form that originated in Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the 1960s. Experiments in improvised and verbatim language intertwine with a music score that integrates Southern rap, horns, drumlines, and melodic R&B and soul. A fierce investigation of physical memory, sexuality, sensuality, and community, MAJOR is a nuanced love letter to the folks who taught the artists how to be proudly Black and proudly femme.

Costume design played a crucial role in the development of the beloved character and feminist icon of cinema and musical theatre, Elle Woods. In a provocative conversation, costume designer and USC School of Dramatic Arts professor Ann Closs-Farley, USC Roski professor Jenny Lin, USC law professor Camille Gear Rich, TV host/producer Pink Lady (Pink Lady Presents), and Ellie Hermann, student designer for SDA’s production of Legally Blonde, will explore how fashion is used as a narrative device in Elle’s journey.
The evening will culminate in a fashion show featuring designs by USC students inspired by Elle’s iconic looks.
