The newest work by Vanessa Sanchez and her groundbreaking San Francisco–based dance and music ensemble La Mezcla explores the history of labor in the U.S.–Mexico borderlands through movement and live music. The polyrhythmic movement and original score provide a new look at the ongoing, systemic exploitation of labor while highlighting the power and joy of collective resistance.

A rare screening of Quincy Jones’s thrilling 1973 television debut as music director and conductor alongside a stellar lineup of musicians including Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Sammy Davis Jr., and Aretha Franklin will be followed by a conversation moderated by Jason King, dean of USC Thornton School of Music. Launched by Quincy Jones in the early 1990s, Vibe changed the landscape of Black popular culture as “the first periodical to cover rap, R&B, rock, reggae, dance music, fashion, sports, and politics—all through the prism of what people were just beginning to call ‘urban culture’” (Complex). Writers, critics, and editors from the early days of Vibe will reunite to discuss their experiences, the magazine, and its legacy.

Join us for workshop performances of a new musical celebrating the iconic L.A.-based nonprofit that began serving former gang members and at-risk youth in 1988. Created by Alberto López, Greg Koppenhaver, and Mark C. Marino; directed by Corky Dominguez; and co-produced by CASA 0101, the original theatre piece follows six homeboys and homegirls as they try to leave la vida, recounting the founding of Homeboy Industries by Father Greg Boyle and featuring pan-Latin musical styles from 1990s rap to reggaeton and cumbia.
Following the matinee performance on Sunday, April 6, a conversation featuring the creators of Homeboys and members of Homeboy Industries will be moderated by USC professor Robert Hernandez.

In a wide-ranging conversation moderated by L.A.–based art historian DANIELLE SHANG, artists YOUNG JOON KWAK, RAFA ESPARZA, and JENNIFER LING DATCHUK will share insights into their creative processes and discuss how they push the boundaries of traditional art forms through the innovative use of unique and unusual materials, as well as the challenges they face in working with unconventional mediums. This event is inspired by the USC Pacific Asia Museum’s newest exhibition, Cai Guo-Qiang: A Material Odyssey, which explores the transformative potential of diverse materials in contemporary art.
