Computational Science... “one of five majors on the rise”* Computational Science is a field of applied Computer Science, in which computing theories and software techniques are used to serve and advance many diverse fields, including science, engineering, social science and business. The program will facilitate interdisciplinary study and research with other University departments and programs.

Graduates earning degrees in Computational Science are sought after at industry-leading companies including AT&T, Bell Labs, Boeing, IBM, Lockheed Martin, Aerospace Corporation, the U.S. Dept. of Energy, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the South Carolina biofabrication industry.

Enter the 21st century through the doors of South Carolina’s most affordable university The Computational Science program at USCB is funded by a National Science Foundation EPSCoR Grant.

With final approvals for the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Computational Science, students are beginning their coursework in August 2010.

Graduates of the program will be able to...

Develop scientific programs in a high-level language such as FORTRAN, C/C++, or Java • Use scientific computational/modeling tools such as Matlab • Demonstrate substantive knowledge and skills in a chosen concentration • Identify and apply methods to efficiently manage data across disciplines • Apply critical thinking skills to develop computer simulations and models • Work fluently with concepts such as numerical methods and computing techniques/theories to solve problems in an application area •

Yiming Ji, Ph.D.

Yiming Ji was selected as one of University of South Carolina's "Rising Stars" from amongst the eight campus system faculty in 2010. His research focuses on wireless communications and computer networks, digital image processing and analysis, and scientific computation. His current research projects are funded by a Networking Technology and Systems grant from the National Science Foundation. Ji has authored over 30 publications in leading conferences and journals. He has also served on the program committee for multiple international conferences (including IEEE IC3N and ISCC) and as a reviewer for the Journal of Engineering Computing, Journal of Mobile Networks and Applications, and Transactions on Embedded Computing Systems. Ji earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Auburn University and joined USCB in 2006; he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2010
