5  Ways  to  Afford  Healthy  Food  on  a  College  Budget -­  Allie  Jones,  Columnist Up  all  night  studying  or  partying  ?  Late  nights  and  weekends  always  vary  from  day  and  so  can  the  funds  for  food.  When  money  and  time  are  short,  here  a  5  easy  ways  to  afford  healthy  food.

1.Plan  ahead  and  set  a  budget.

As  a  college  student  money  is  al-­ ready  a  limited  resource.  So  before  you  go  to  the  grocery  store,  make  a  list  of  what  you  need,  not  want  and  think  about  cooking  in  bulk  to  last  longer.  Check  the  cupboards  and  see  what’s  available.  If  all  your  friends  wants  to  eat,  don’t  be  afraid  to  show  off  your  cooking  skills,  but  every-­ one  should  help  pay  for  the  meal.

2.Eat  before  you  go  grocery  shop-­ ping,  the  hungrier  you  are  the  more  food  you  will  buy.

Wal-­Mart  maybe  across  the  street  but  they  may  or  may  not  always  have  the  best  prices.  Take  some  time  and  look  online  at  other  gro-­ cery  stores  ads.  Publix,  Food  Lion,  Bi-­lo,  Target,  Kroger  and  Piggly  Wiggly,  post  all  of  their  ads  on-­ line  and  provide  ads  in  the  Sunday  paper.  Shopping  around  is  a  great  way  to  save  money  and  get  out  of  the  dorms.  If  you’re  a  die  hard  Wal-­ Mart  fan,  bring  the  printed  competi-­ tor’s  weekly  ad  out  and  Wal-­Mart  had  guaranteed  price  matching,  ex-­ cluding  buy  one  get  one  free  items.

USCB  Athletics  Appoints  Director  of  Athletics  Contributed  by:  Justin  Jarrett,  Sports  Information  Director BLUFFTON,  S.C.  and  BEAU-­ FORT,  S.C.  —  The  University  of  South  Carolina  Beaufort  has  ap-­ pointed  Quin  Monahan  as  its  Di-­ rector  of  Athletics,  effective  Sept.  10,  Chancellor  Dr.  Jane  T.  Upshaw  announced  Friday.

Monahan  comes  to  USCB  after  two  years  as  Director  of  Athletics  at  Belmont  Abbey  College,  an  NCAA  Division  II  institution  outside  Char-­ lotte,  N.C.  Prior  to  that,  he  was  the  Director  of  Athletics  at  Savannah  College  of  Art  and  Design  (SCAD)  from  2008-­10  after  previously  serv-­ ing  as  SCAD's  Associate  Director  of  Athletics  (2003-­08)  and  Coordinator  of  Academic  Advising  (2001-­03).

During  his  time  at  Belmont  Abbey,  Monahan  was  charged  with  over-­ VHHLQJ YDUVLW\ SURJUDPV DQG ¿YH junior  varsity  programs  involving  more  than  400  student-­athletes  and  leading  28  full-­time  and  12  part-­

time  coaches  and  staff  members.  He  made  it  a  point  at  Belmont  Abbey  to  rebuild  the  relationship  between  athletics  and  other  cam-­ pus  departments,  reestablished  the  Crusader  Club  fundraising  orga-­ nization  and  increased  corporate  sponsorship.

Monahan  is  no  stranger  to  the  USCB  athletics  staff,  because  he  served  as  Associate  Director  of  Athletics  at  SCAD  at  the  time  USCB  launched  its  intercollegiate  athletics  program  and  was  a  trusted  adviser  in  aiding  with  the  school's  transition  into  the  National  Asso-­ ciation  of  Intercollegiate  Athletics  (NAIA)  and  The  Sun  Conference.

Monahan  received  his  Associate  of  Arts  degree  in  Secondary  Education  from  Kansas  City  Kansas  Commu-­ nity  College  in  1988  and  his  Bache-­ lor  of  Science  in  Behavioral  Science  from  Oklahoma  Wesleyan  Univer-­ sity  in  1990.  In  1994,  he  completed  a  Master  of  Arts  in  Counseling  from  Asbury  Theological  Seminary.  Monahan  and  his  wife,  Beth,  have  two  sons  and  plan  to  relocate  to  Bluffton. Monday,  September  24 MANIC  MONDAY;͞  ALL  day Women’s  Soccer  Game  v.  St.  An-­ drews  Cancer  Awareness  Game;͞  5:00pm;͞  Fin  Land  Field Get  caught  in  Sand  Shark  gear  by  the  “Shark  Crew�  and  you  will  win  a  FREE  spirit  item  to  take  to  the  big  Homecoming  soccer  game  on  Friday!

Tuesday,  September  25 Kickball  Kickoff  and  Chili  Cook-­ Off;͞  5:30pm;͞  Library  Quad Do  you  want  to  try  to  defeat  the  undefeated  staff  and  faculty  for  the  ¿UVW WLPH HYHU LQ WKH JRRG ROH JDPH of  Kickball  OR  do  you  love  prep-­ ping  for  the  fall  with  a  nice  warm  bowl  of  chili?  Be  prepared,  if  you  lose,  the  team  captain  of  the  losing  team  WILL  get  pied  in  the  face!  If  you  want  to  be  a  part  of  the  chili  cook-­off,  stop  by  the  game  with  $2  or  a  canned  good  to  test  the  chili!

Wednesday,  September  26 DECK  THE  HALLS  (indoors) Let’s  see  some  spirit!!  Today  will  be  D FRQWHVW RI GHFRUDWLQJ RIÂżFHV GH-­ partments  and  every  inch  of  USCB  with  the  Homecoming  “Catch  the  Feverâ€?  spirit!   There  will  be  prizes  IRU WKH %HVW 2IÂżFH %HVW 'HSDUW-­ ment  and  Best  Student  Group!  Any Â

student,  staff,  faculty,  department,  athletic  team  etc.  can  join  in  the  fun!

DECK  THE  HALLS/  BANNER  COMPETITION  (outdoors) Continue  your  spirit  outdoors!  We  will  be  looking  for  the  best  sheet  decorated  by  a  student  group  with  the  theme  of  Homecoming  in  mind.   The  sheets  must  be  hung  in  the  trees  on  the  quad  no  later  than  3pm.  Any  student,  staff,  faculty,  department,  athletic  team  etc.  can  join  in  the  fun! **Judging  for  both  of  these  will  be  between  3-­5pm  and  the  winner  will  be  announced  at  half  time  at  the  big  soccer  game  on  Friday**

Friday,  September  28 CHALK  THE  WALK CART  PARADE  3:30pm;Íž  meet  in  front  of  the  Campus  Center  WOMEN’S  SOCCER  vs.  Webber  International  University  4:00pm,  Fin  Land   Southern  BBQ:  Alumni,  Students,  Staff  and  Faculty,  6:30pm,  Library  Quad :KR HYHU VDLG WKDW JUDIÂżWL ZDV EDG" Well,  not  on  this  day!  It  is  time  to  chalk  the  sidewalks  with  our  theme  of  Homecoming.  There  will  be  a  contest  FOR  design  of  the  best  sec-­ tion  of  the  sidewalk!  Any  student,  staff,  faculty,  department,  athletic  team  etc.  can  join  in  the  fun! Â

Thursday,  September  27 “CANâ€?  STRUCTION If  you  are  feeling  the  Sand  Shark  spirit  the  week  of  Homecoming,  let’s  show  our  surrounding  commu-­ nity!  Participate  in  an  EXTREME  canned  food  drive  that  will  ulti-­ mately  turn  into  a  “canâ€?struction.  Let’s  see  which  group  can  collect  the  most  cans  and  build  the  best  “canâ€?struction! Â

Join  the  challenge  of  decorating  the  best  shopping  cart  with  your  group  and  the  theme  of  Homecoming  in  mind  to  spread  spirit  through  the  school  on  the  way  to  the  big  game!  Â

Multi-­Purpose  Room   Today  is  the  day  to  come  out  and  have  fun!  Stop  by  and  support  your  fellow  Sand  Shark  Soccer  team,  then  come  laugh  at  your  alumni  play  a  gruesome  game  of  Mushball!  This  evening  there  will  be  a  car-­ nival-­  themed  Block  Party  with  low  country  boil  for  dinner  for  students  living  in  the  residence  halls.  Lastly,  the  late  night  dance  party  “Strut  Your  Swagâ€?  begins  at  9:00pm  to  celebrate  the  fun  week  of  Homecoming  events!  To  sign  up  to  participate  in  ANY  of  the  Homecoming  “competitionsâ€?  there  will  be  sign-­  up  sheets  in  the  student  life  hallway  (back  hall  way  of  the  Campus  Center)  no  later  than  Friday,  September  21!  Any  group  of  students,  staff,  faculty,  department,  athletic  team  etc.  are  encouraged  to  join  in  the  fun! **All  announcements  of  the  win-­ ners  will  be  made  at  half  time  of  the  Homecoming  game  on  Friday,  September  28th  so  come  out  and  cheer  on  your  organization  and  receive  prizes  for  being  a  part  of  Homecoming  2012!** Â
