Options For Our Energy Future” Raymond Dominick, Ph.D., professor and published author, examines the way our country and world are configuring our energy sources. According to scholars there may not be one solution to our future needs. We may need to find the optimum mix of sources. Join us as we identify and discuss the potential of fossil fuels, nukes, wind, solar, bio-fuels, conservation and more.

June 28 “Garden Smart…Turning Gardening Basics Into Year-Round Color” Discuss what’s blooming around the Lowcountry and how you can achieve success in your own garden. What is that plant?

I want color in my yard, where do I start? Ann Sauers, horticulturist and master gardener, will discuss college botany and progress to garden basics and beyond. Learn practical information that YOU WILL REMEMBER.

July 12- “Wonderful World of Coney Island” Popular lecturer and author, Brian Cudahy Ph.D., traces the history of Coney Island from its strange beginnings to its emergence in the late 19th century as America’s premier ocean playground. In addition to freak shows and championship boxing matches, Coney Island played a key role in the development of New York.

July 19 – “Eat, Pray, Love” Following a painful divorce Ms. Gilbert goes on an exciting adventure to discover pleasure in Italy, devotion in India and balance in Indonesia. Her life is transformed in the process.

Attendees of writer and popular speaker Justin Epstein’s interactive workshop will discover how to identify and live their passion, release blocks holding them back, and maximize their experience of pleasure. The seminar will involve excerpts from the book and movie, practical exercises and discussion.

Wednesdays on Hilton Head Island Pineland Station Mall Suite 304A (SC278 and Mathews Drive mid-island) All classes 1-3 pm June 22 “Behind the Golden Arches” Retired businessman, Jack Rabbitt takes us on a journey back to the roots of one of the most recognized and successful brands in American business. Explore some of the remarkable people, events and practices that shaped McDonald’s into the global giant it is today, with 36,000 stores serving 47 million customers in 119 countries daily!

June 29 “Remembering the Way it Was: How Folks Lived in the Hilton Head Area Years Ago” Join local native and author Fran Marscher for an entertaining look at how life was lived in the Lowcountry BEFORE the growth and development explosions of the mid-20th century.

Fran profiles “characters” she interviewed as a newspaper reporter in the 1980’s, many of whom were born between 1881 and 1900. Her subjects have passed away now, but were eager to tell their stories for us to hear.

July 13 “SATCHMO - What a Wonderful World” View the award winning documentary on the life of Louis Armstrong and discuss the heartwarming story of the man who integrated jazz and American pop music and made America smile for over a half century. Mike Ivers, musical historian will show rare film footage and interviews of the greatest jazz influence who ever lived. Duke Ellington said it best: "There was never a man born so poor who became so rich and famous, and along that way, never harmed a single soul".

July 20 – “Lowcountry Butterflies” – at Coastal Discovery Museum - 70 Honey Horn Plantation Road Carlos Chacon, Manager of Natural History at the Coastal Discovery Museum will cover the life cycle and natural history of the most common Lowcountry butterflies as well as tips to attract and promote butterflies in your backyard.

Then, participants will visit the Karen Wertheimer Enclosure to see butterflies in all stages of development.

Thursdays in Beaufort USCB Historic Beaufort campus All classes 1-3 pm (except Watercolor painting) June 16 “Sweetgrass Baskets & More” (in Room 104) Come and watch Jery Taylor, Lowcountry master weaver demonstrate techniques used to create various styles of sweetgrass baskets which she learned from the time she was 5 years old. She will tell about the craft of weaving baskets which has been passed down through Lowcountry families for generations and continues on today. Beaufort-style baskets, a unique style taught at the Penn School, will also be shown.

June 16 – June 30 “Intro To Watercolor Painting” Dates: June 16, 23, 30 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

Cost: $90 Where: Center for the Arts – Room 203 This three-session class begins with demonstration of the basic techniques used to paint watercolor designs. Students will be given ample time to practice under supervision and will create a personal design which will be finalized to take with them. Art materials will be supplied. Classes instructed by Amiri Farris, recent winner of 2011 Palmetto Trust Heritage Preservation Award, He holds a MFA degree in Painting, BFA in Illustration from SCAD and teaches fine arts and graphic design at USCB.

June 30- “South Carolina 101” (in Room 104) Take a look at South Carolina through the eyes of a native son, Conrad Hartz. From the Native Americans to retirement communities and from the mountains to the sea, you’ll learn historical facts, customs and general information that will make you more knowledgeable as a citizen of the Palmetto State.

July 14 “General George Patton: A Genius at War” Popular historian and storyteller, Steve Bacon takes a hard look at the commander of Second Corps and Third Army in World War II. General George Patton was an interesting and brilliant character who prayed like an altar boy, cursed like a sailor and achieved incredible results. Through brief segments from the movie, “Patton,” participants will see why this man was one of the vital keys to the Allied victory in Europe.
