USCB Touted as Organization of the Year February 2, 2013 Hilton Head Island, SC – The University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) was named as the Organization of the Year by the Hilton Head Island - Bluffton Chamber of Commerce.
USCB was nominated for this honor by J. Simon Fraser, member of the Beaufort-Jasper Higher Education Commission. In this role, Fraser had a firsthand opportunity to witness the proactive leadership with which USCB expanded its role and mission from a two year institution to a four-year, full service, and baccalaureate university. According to Fraser, “USCB is enhancing the quality of life, serving the citizens of our region and improving the business environment of the Hilton Head/Bluffton community. Over the past 10 years, the University has more than doubled its enrollment and attracted stronger students in the process.”
USCB has assembled a significant Ph.D. qualified faculty and built a strong portfolio of academic degree programs and research tailored to the strengths and needs of the Lowcountry. The majority of Ph.D. faculty engage in research addressing regional issues such as tourism, water quality, environmental and health care.
USCB offers local young people affordable access to higher education and the increased career opportunities it brings, while also attracting students from outside the region. These young adults, who are pursuing professional degrees in business, hospitality management, education, computational science, and nursing, are serving as interns in local businesses. They are graduating as skilled professionals and more reflective, community service oriented citizen-leaders—and choosing to stay and invest their lives in our community.
In the past 6 months, USCB has proactively worked with the Hilton Head Town Council to explore bringing its hospitality management majors to study, live and work on Hilton Head Island, thereby enhancing customer service leadership across the Island’s tourism related businesses and events such as including the RBC Heritage sponsored by Boeing, the Concurs D’Elegance and the Hilton Head Wine and Food Festival. USCB’s Osher Life Long Learning Institute (OLLI) has been ranked in the top 10% in the nation for the extent and quality of its community service. OLLI, along with USCB arts and cultural events such as the Met Opera Live! and the Festival Chamber Music Series, create an intellectual quality of life that makes our region more attractive to businesses and to retirees.
In February 2012, the USC Moore School of Business reported that USCB generates a $71.4M economic impact locally and creates 1001 direct and indirect jobs. As an institution, USCB has become one of the foundations of our region’s economic health. USCB is now the largest knowledge-based business in the Lowcountry. According to Fraser, “For its decade of exceptional achievement and service to our region as a baccalaureate university and for its continued effort to innovate to meet the needs and build the strengths of our region, it is appropriate that we as a community honor the
University of South Carolina Beaufort as the 2012 Chamber Outstanding Organization.”
