Maymester in Biology USCB presents a series of Maymester classes based on Marine Ecology and Conservation

BBIO 499C&D – LIFE AND DEATH IN THE SALT MARSH:

2+2 credit hours. Prerequisite: BBIO 301 or permission of instructor. Intensive Maymester course teaching field research methods, statistical design, and culminating in an independent research project on aspects of ecological processes of Beaufort and surrounding counties. Students will spend more than 5 hours per day in classroom/field-laboratory context planning, developing, researching background, and carrying out their research project, approved and facilitated by course faculty. BBIO 480 – MOLECULAR MARINE ECOLOGY:

3 credit hours. Prerequisite: BBIO 301 and BBIO 303 or permission of instructor. Investigation of techniques and analysis of molecular data in marine organisms. Hands-on experience using molecular tools to investigate population genetic, ecological and systematic principles. (Staton)

BBIO 499M – PLANTS OF THE COASTAL LOWCOUNTRY:

3 credit hours. Prerequisite: BBIO 301 or permission of instructor. Field and lab identification and understanding of key anatomical traits of plants typical of the coastal, marsh and coastal forest of the region. Hands-on experience collecting and preparing museum (Herbarium) quality plant specimen mounts and the environmental conditions that drive plant zonation. (Payne)

BBIO 295A – DIRTY WORDS AND PICTURES: (2-3) (Permission of the

instructor). Interpreting nature through written and visual media. Field and lab documentation of the natural surroundings using fiction/non-fiction writing and photography to interpret the nature of the Lowcountry and coastal region. (Farris & Brasseur).
