Hey there fellow USCB students!

My name is Vincent Belken and I’m the acting president of the USCB Catholics Club on Campus. I want to welcome you in these 40 days of Lent to deepen your relationship with Christ and His Body here at the Bluffton Campus. Whether you were just baptized Catholic or were devoutly raised a Catholic, whether you pray sporadically or daily, we are here to help you explore your faith in Jesus Christ and to feel comfortable in doing so. We know we have much to offer you and that you in turn will bring much to our club.

We are meeting this semester on Monday nights in library room 147 from 6pm until 7:30pm. There is no need to worry about coming in late! Our meetings are quite simple.

They consist of FAITH (videos AND reflections on Sacred Scripture – the next Sunday’s readings), FELLOWSHIP (Board games AND other excursions), and FOOD (free dinner brought in OR the occasional free dinner out).

The Freshman Blog: Class Cancellations - Cassidy Perrine, Blogger On rare, beautiful, occasions, when the planets line up just right and all the universe is in your favor, you will be blessed with the beautiful and elusive rainbow of a cancelled class. After the sheer elation of realizing you don't actually have to put on pants for at least another hour, or the brief heartache of realizing you woke up thirty minutes early for homework now deemed irrelevant for another day or two, there is one problem that always presents itself: what to do with this completely unstructured time. As a master of the art of procrastination, I thrive on this unstructured time as a time to hone my (not so unique) talent of being completely and not at all apologetically unproductive. And with this being said I give you my own guide in what to do when class is cancelled.

Begin first in an area most conducive to laziness. Be it your bed, your couch, or your living room floor, make sure this space is totally equipped with everything you will need (i.e. snacks and your cell phone) to make yourself into an absolute vegetable for the rest of the near future. Be sure you have your laptop handy. This laptop, usually a tool for studying and skyping far away friends, is actually a key to your best time wasting tool: the internet. The internet is your best friend when wasting copious amounts of time alone. I suggest you embark on a multifaceted journey into the deepest and most hilarious depths of the internet, a phenomenon known to most as "funny pictures of cats."

If this isn't hilarious to you, first reconsider what you're doing with your life, then maybe try YouTube

or tumblr, any website where you can become totally engrossed and definitely lose track of time. If all else fails, you can always count on Netflix to catch up on any episodes you may have missed of your favorite tv series from 1975. Once you've chosen your task, sit back, relax, and laugh out loud to yourself as much as you deem necessary. If you need a break from the strenuous mental task of wasting time on the internet, feel free to ponder the really important life questions like: "What is Earl doing when I leave the room?" and "How much wood could a-what is a woodchuck anyway?" Once your feet fall asleep, recall the importance of thirty-second dance parties to the awful nineties music of your choice.

After all, your class got cancelled due to some condition that had absolutely nothing to do with you. You deserve to celebrate.

Roges and Vacabounds introduces New Director - LeAndrea Nienke, Columnist Leah Nixon never expected to become director of this semester’s show when she joined the drama club this past fall. Last semester’s director David Helmer was forced to quit due to work responsibilities, leaving the club with no one to direct this semester’s show.

Sights were set on some of the upperclassmen within the Roges & Vacabounds to conduct the play; but as many of them are graduating this spring, none of them wanted to take on the difficult task. Finally, the former director and the drama club’s supervisor, Dr. Blair, decided that Leah should direct the show, despite

her underclassman status.

After facing such a rocky start, the Roges & Vacabounds have started practice much later than usual. Now, with only a month left until the performance, we’re lucky that Leah has a background in theatre. During high school, Leah was president of her drama club. She also has performed in five shows, one of her roles having been the lead part.

Then last semester Leah was stage manager for the fall performance An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein.

Thanks to Leah’s determination, the drama club is back on track to perform this spring. David Helmer

and Dr. Blaire already had the play picked out for this semester, so all that was left to Leah was to cast the play and have it performed.

She quickly got the parts casted and is now holding practice twice a week; but with such a short deadline looming overhead, she is looking to increase rehearsals to three times a week. It’s also very likely that there will be weekend rehearsals on top of that.

Everyone who has eaten in the cafeteria has had at least one meal that left a sour taste in their mouths and on their minds. Views varied on the meals, but the answers that follow are some of the most unsavory dishes that students have had at the Sand Bar.

“How’s your New Year’s resolution coming along?”

- Contributed by: Jonathan Bello Statistics show that about 40% of adults make a New Year’s Resolution [1] of those who actually make a resolution about 90% fail to achieve their goal [2]. The main resolution people make is the category to improve physical well-being.

This includes weight loss, exercise, healthy diet, quit smoking, and drink less alcohol. I want to share with you 3 steps I took last year (and taking this year) that pulled me to achieve my resolutions last year.

Step # 1: Create a Vision not a wish list!

Most of us create a wish list on New Year’s. We say: I should lose weight, I should quit smoking, I should stop drinking alcohol, and I should do this. The only thing we do is should all over ourselves. In order to achieve a dream, goal, reso-

lution, you must create an inspiring vision with a deadline. Create a vision so compelling that it will pull you toward it, not something you have to push yourselves toward.

Have a goal that is so motivating, attractive, and so worth pursuing that you have a hard time going to sleep at night, so inspiring that you can’t wait to get up in the morning to start your day. This will allow you to find a way to be consistent when the going gets tough.

Did you even make a resolution Step # 2: Reasons come first; this year?

Answers come second.

If you didn’t make a resolution, why didn’t you? If you know that there are categories in your life that can improve. Why haven’t you created a plan to get to where you want to be? Most people don’t even bother to make a resolution(s). Why? Well, who wants to keep disappointing themselves? After all, about 10% actually achieve their goal(s). If your life is going great, you know that it can be taken to the next level.

There is always a way to grow and contribute more. If you’re not growing or if you’re not contributing beyond yourself in any form, sooner or later you’ll get bored. No matter what you’re situation in life is there is always a way to improve.

You must have reasons for pursuing your dreams, goals, or resolutions both positive and negative reasons.

If I don’t take action this is what it’s going to cause me. If I do take action this is what I am going to gain.

“I will have the satisfaction of being able to give more to my family and friends”. Why? Why do I want this?

I am not willing to settle anything less than my potential. Reasons come first; answers come second.

If you don't know how you will get there, but you know why you want it. Then you will find a way to breakthrough. This will allow you to find a way whenever there are unexpected challenges thrown at you in your journey. Situations come your way, you handle it, change direction and keep going.

Step # 3: Review it and feel it everyday.

Have you ever been in a situation that you wanted something so bad, you had so much desire and drive that you found a way to make it happen? It could have been anything, a career move, a relationship,

or even a new car, but you wanted something. You were so obsessed that you didn’t even know how to get it, but it was so compelling, you kept envisioning it, and feeling it that you didn’t even have a plan. Nevertheless, it was part of your focus so often that you were constantly looking for ways to get you there. There’s a part of our brain (RAS) that determines what we notice in our world. When you have a clear vision, enough reasons, repetition, and emotion toward your goal this part of your brain says: “Anything that relates to my goal, I need to notice”.

Start now It is never too late to create your resolution. If you didn’t in the beginning of the year or you got off track. Start now! What is an area of your life that you must improve? It can be career/school, relationship, physical health, or your spirituality.

Write down a clear vision of what you want, next write out specifically why you want this, and finally review and feel it everyday.

This isn’t anything new. I’m just reminding you in an organized way what you know deep inside of your being. If this article resonated within you in any form, then we both know that there is a lot of potential inside of you to give waiting to be unleashed.

Joining an honors society in college can provide several benefits to a student’s future. The prestige of membership alone can strengthen a student’s resume. Some of these societies, such as Gamma Beta Phi, require community service hours along with attending meetings; proof that Honors students are more than just Brainiacs, but also active members of a thriving community.

On Sunday February 24, 80 members of the USCB student family were inducted into Gamma Beta Phi, a national honor society with chapters on college campuses throughout the United States. The organization's mission is to promote education and provide community service. This latest round of inductions brings the number of members at USCB up to 163. This is extraordinary because this means that almost 10 percent of our student body is in Gamma Beta Phi. The evening was begun by the president of our local chapter, Michael Alexander, and Spanish Professor Rena Kratky, who advises the club on campus. The induction was carried out in waves, with groups of ten or so students taking the oath of fraternity together. Guest speakers Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Harvey Varnet, English Professor James Duffy, and Psychology Professor Dr. Andrew Geier were given honorary memberships in the society for their participation in the induction.

State of the Institution - Tyler Cobb, Layout Editor In his State of the Union Address, President Obama urged congress to create a Higher Education Act that would provide additional resources for people seeking higher education. This was all part of his plan for economic prosperity within the middle class, which has been struggling financially since the economic crisis of 2008. President Obama and members of Congress have already made going to college simpler by providing tax credits, federal grants and additional student loans, but their hard work isn’t over. People are still struggling, and Our University is still struggling.

Over a decade ago, The University of South Carolina- Beaufort was awarded its baccalaureate status by the state, switching from a two-year institution to a four-year institution.

Ever since then, Our University has continued to be funded like a twoyear institution. This has caused USCB to increasingly rely on funding from Beaufort County and from its students. In fact, only four cents out of every dollar that the school receives comes from the state of

With that being said, some progress has been made regarding our institution’s financial worries; however this does not go to say that our legislative representatives are done with the tasks at hand. The House Ways and Means budget recommendations have been finalized, and within the new budget is additional funding for USCB and other underfunded South Carolina institutions. While that message can be viewed as true, that certainly isn’t going to solve USCB’s predicament. USCB, as an institution, must hold its state representatives and legislators accountable. The only way that the University will keep costs down for students are if financial parity and equality is granted by the State.

funding for the University of South Carolina- Beaufort, and an additional $250,000 for both USC-Aiken and USC-Upstate. These funding increases are reoccurring, meaning that they’re appropriated to the institutions annually.

On top of those funding increases, The USC system also received $2.1 million in reoccurring funds for Palmetto College, which is South Carolina’s new online education resource. USC- Columbia also received a $2.5 million nonrecurring grant for the Graduate on Your Time initiative.

The University of South CarolinaBeaufort commends Representative Chip Limehouse and other members of the South Carolina House Ways and Means committee for their hard work. He and other members have worked tirelessly to ensure that equality and financial parity are granted to all South Carolina institutions.

The next step for the budget is an open debate on the House floor. It’s

almost definite that in our economic climate these appropriations will be somewhat protested and changed by members of the South Carolina legislature. This budget will more than likely be altered, and the monetary support for higher education institutions may be reduced. Since USCB, has already been living on a financial diet during recent years; any extra funding we receive will be welcomed with open arms.

As we’ve been stating for weeks, monetary equality among S.C. higher education institutions is one of the most pressing issues that we’re facing. But you, the reader, may be wondering why it’s so important.

It’s important because the only way that we will be able to strengthen our university and create a strong Lowcountry workforce is through state support.

Let’s analyze the differences between USCB, whose state funding is the lowest in all of South Carolina, and the Citadel, whose state funding is the highest. Both schools have similar enrollment populations, and relatively similar costs per student.

However, USCB’s graduation rate is around fifty percent lower than The Citadel’s. This can be directly linked to the funding crisis that we now have on our hands. USCB simply lacks the funding needed to expand its campus, academic programs and other things needed to retain students until graduation. We all know that USCB is a “Satellite School”, but that doesn’t mean that we have to settle with our current title.

Dr. Eric Montie, 2013 USCB Breakthrough Star - Contributed by: Candace Brasseur, USCB Public Information Director Eric W. Montie, Ph.D., an Assistant Professor of Biology at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, has been named a 2013 Breakthrough Star by the University of South Carolina. He was one of only 15 Stars to be selected from a faculty of more than 2,000 this year.

Breakthrough Stars are faculty members from a wide range of disciplines who “show phenomenal commitment to their fields through research and scholarly activity,” Dr. Prakash Nagarkatti wrote in his congratulatory letter to Dr. Montie.

Dr. Nagarkatti is Vice President for Research at USC and a Carolina Distinguished Professor. “I am confident that your innovative research and scholarly pursuits will propel you to the top of your field. You are helping to bring recognition to the University of South Carolina, and I applaud your efforts.”

Breakthrough Stars are nominated by other faculty members and approved by the Breakthrough Advisory Board, which consists of a panel of senior faculty and administrative officials in the office of USC’s Vice President for Research.

Stars are considered some of the University’s most promising earlycareer professors. Dr. Montie’s nomination was submitted by Dr. Charles H. Keith, professor of Biology and Chair of the Department of Natural Science at USCB. A member of the USCB faculty since January 2011, Dr. Montie teaches animal physiology, neurobiology, and ichthyology at USCB’s Hilton Head Gateway campus. His

research interests involve marine biology, neurobiology and ecotoxicology.

After receiving a B.S. degree in Zoology at the University of Rhode Island in 1993, Dr. Montie embarked upon post-baccalaureate studies in Biochemistry at Harvard University.

He received an M.S. degree in Environmental Toxicology at Clemson University in 1999, then went on to earn a Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, MA. One of the nation’s premier marine science graduate programs, the MIT-WHOI Joint Program brings together the resources of two world-class research and teaching institutions.

Dr. Montie’s research program focuses on brain architecture, hearing of fish and marine mammals, and acoustic communication of aquatic vertebrates. The more applied part of his research program focuses on studies that investigate how stressors, such as man-made chemicals, harmful algal blooms, noise pollution, and climate change may impact the brain, hearing, and acoustic communication. His research has involved work on zebrafish, goldfish, and rats, as well as spotted sea trout, red drum, flounder, California sea lions, harp seals, hooded seals, grey seals, Atlantic white-sided dolphins, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, pygmy killer whales, and right whales.

Dr. Montie’s work has direct im-

portance to the regional economy of South Carolina and the Lowcountry. One of the most important fisheries in this region is spotted sea trout, red drum and black drum. A common characteristic of these fish is that the males make sound to attract females during the mating process, much the same way that frogs make croaking sounds to attract mates.

“We have novel technology to identify the location of large schools of fish and where they are breeding based on sound. We are using this technology to better understand what habitat is essential for these species of fish to reproduce in this area” explains Dr. Montie. “Sound production in male fish is mainly associated with courtship behavior, and these sounds are species specific. Thus, a ‘loud’ tidal creek means more courtship behavior … which could mean more fish reproduction … and more fish for the lowcountry economy.”

Dr. Montie and his 14 fellow Breakthrough Stars will be honored at an awards dinner April 30 at the Capital City Club in Columbia, home of USC’s flagship campus.

Professor Profile:Brett Borton - Jordan Oelgoetz, Columnist The Tidal Tribune would like to introduce and welcome a new Sand Shark to our school, Professor Brett Borton. Professor Borton is a Communications professor currently teaching Communication Research during the spring 2013 term. Professor Borton is an alumnus of USC Columbia where he earned his Masters in Mass Communications.

Professor Borton is still a student at USC Columbia where he is finishing his final year as a Ph.D. candidate for the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Professor Borton has experience teaching other communications courses at the University of South Carolina ranging in mass communications and public relations.

Professor Borton has contributed to journals and books on communication as well.

Before becoming an instructor at the University of South Carolina Professor Borton worked as a journalist and an editor for a number of newspapers and magazines. Next to journalistic work, Professor

Borton worked as a public relations director for a number of agencies, and he once owned and operated a consulting firm in Hilton Head Island that specialized in creating marketing programs for real estate, resort, and hospitality industries.

Professor Borton is excited about his teaching career at USCB and looks forward to integrating more specialized courses into the communications program.

Professor Profile:Lauren Hoffer - Annastacia Harsh, Columnist One of USCB's beloved English Professors, Dr. Lauren Hoffer, recently had a scholarly article accepted for publication in the Victorian's Institute Journal. The title of her article is "Employment Relations and the Failure of Sympathy in Hardy's Desperate Remedies and the Mayor of Casterbridge."

This particular article is drawn from a larger book manuscript that Dr. Hoffer is writing about "lady's companions" in the nineteenth century. A lady's companion was essentially a woman who was paid to keep other women company, chaperone them, and often provide sympathy for their employers.

The book, Sympathy for Sale: The Lady’s Companion and the Victorian Novel, discusses whether or not the sympathy that was given by the these companions were genuine,

since they were paid to provide it.

Inside her classes, Dr. Hoffer teaches with a very upbeat and lively manner. In shorter terms, her classes are discussion based, but there is far more to the overall experience her classes. When discussing the novels that are read in class, students often realize that there is more going on within the novels than what the readers get at surface value. Meaning, Dr. Hoffer often shows her students that the novel is not telling a story but talking about bigger issues of the time, such as the role of women during the Victorian Era and their influences in novels like Jane Eyre.

Dr. Hoffer feels it is important for her students to conduct their own research on a novel discussed in class and form their own scholarly opinions, not only on the novel,

but on the time periods themselves to show that they understand the importance of the text, both during its time, and the lasting influence that it has on literature today.

Dr. Hoffer is a very active professor on the campus. She is the faculty adviser for Sigma Tau Delta (the English Honor Society at USCB), and teaches many classes. The classes she teaches are English 101, English 102, English 289, Gothic Literature, Romanticism, Victorian Literature (her specialty), and a course on Women Writers. It is important to be aware of Dr. Hoffer's upcoming contributions to the scholarly field of Literature, as her work may have a profound impact on future Victorian Era literary teachings, as well as bring more presitge to our humble university.

The 7th Annual Beaufort International Film Festival - From Staff Reports In case you missed, the Beaufort Film Society hosted the 7th Annual Beaufort International Film Festival from February 13, 2013 to February 17, 2013. With events both on the University of South Carolina Beaufort Historic Campus, as well as the local community, The Tidal Tribune was invited to cover this event once more.

After three days of endless showings, Saturday night culminated in the Closing Awards Ceremony, located in the Center for the Arts of the University of South Carolina Beaufort Historic campus.

Opening night once again took place on the rooftop of the Old Bay Marketplace, located in Beaufort, SC. Open to film society members, directors, actors/actresses, writers, media, and the like; the festivities lasted from 6PM to well pass 8PM as originally scheduled.

In no particular order, the following honors were bestowed: Best Screenwriting, “Bad Advice for Good People,” by Gary Weeks of Atlanta; Best Student Film, “Shoot the Moon,” directed by Alexander Gaeta of California; Best Short Film, “Wallenda,” directed by V.W. Scheich of California; Best Documentary, “Besa: The Promise,” directed by Rachel Goslins of Maryland; Best Actor, Mike Wiley in “Wolf Call;” Best Director, Rachel Goslins for “Besa: The Promise,” Best Animation, “Fish and Chicks,” directed by Daniel Berkowitz of North Carolina, and finally the Audience Choice Award, “Granny’s Got Game,” directed by Angela Alford of North Carolina.

Local restaurants featured a number of appetizers and even a few small entrees to guests, while volunteers from the area such as Paris Island Marines served drinks from the two bar areas. Of the restaurants, those present were Emily’s, Sweetgrass, Breakwater, Plums, and Southern Graces. With live music, assorted conversation, and enough food to feed a small army, the evening went on effortlessly.

Thursday, Friday, and the Saturday afternoon were dominated by showings of the various films presented by writers and directors. In total, 38 films of 5 different genres were shown.

Within each genre, the films were featured as follows: Animation - 5 films, Documentary - 8 films, Shorts - 9 films, Student Films - 6 films, and Screenplays - 10 films.

In the end, there were a number of awards to be given on the night of February 17, 2013.

While all present did not receive honors, each film was honored for its entry and encouraged to progress to the future film festivals both locally, and abroad.

St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah, GA - Ashtons Bowns, Columnist Savannah celebrates St. Patrick’s Day for the 189th time this year in 2013. For Savannah, St. Patrick’s Day is not celebrated on just one day, but throughout the course of a month. Savannah is home of the second largest St. Patrick’s Day celebration. On the weekend of March 17th there is to be over half a million people visiting Savannah. Even though the official St. Patrick’s Day is technically on Sunday, March 17th, the St. Patrick’s Day parade will be held on Saturday, March 16th, at 10:15 am.

In previous years onlookers could camp out to make sure that they have a reserved seating area, but for the first time no over-night camping is permitted. Visitors are aloud to start reserving seating at 6:00 am on March 16th. Officials advise guests to be in their desired seating by 7:00 am.

The festival zone includes River Street, Broughton Street, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and East Broad Street. Within the festival zone visitors are aloud to bring their own alcohol, but for the first time consumers must purchase a $5 wristband on each day you wish to consume any alcohol beverage, including your own. There will be officers and officials searching for wristbands, and enforcing the drinking age. If one wishes to provide his or her own beer or liquor the alcohol must be in a 16oz or less plastic cup.

Also, a first this year, the SavannahChatham will be observing the

crowd from the sky. The police department placed a 30ft Skywatch Tower in Ellis Square. There will be officers keeping watch from inside the tower.

Events: March 8 at 12:00 pm: The Forsyth Park fountain turns green indicating that St. Patrick’s Day is near. The fountain will remain green throughout the celebrations.

March 9 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm: Tara Feis Irish celebration is an outdoor celebration that takes place Emmet Park. Throughout the day there will be live performances, dancing, crafts, food, beverages, and much more.

March 9 at 3:00 pm: Tybee Island will host an Irish heritage parade. The parade is free, and will start at City Hall and ends at Tybrisa Street.

March 15-16: St. Patrick’s Day celebration on the river takes place on Historic River Street. The free celebration includes continuous music, games, food, and beverages.

March 16 at 10:45 am: The annual Savannah St. Patrick’s Day parade will last for about three

hours. The parade includes over 350 units including: U.S. military divisions, award-winning bands,

marching units, the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales and much more.

Player Profile: Brandon Joyce Baseball - David Roberts, Sports Editor This season, for the first time in four years, the Sand Sharks set out to find a new third baseman. Upon graduating, David O’Neil, a fouryear starter for USCB, left a pair of enormous shoes to fill at third base.

While appearing in a school record 191 games for the Sand Sharks, O’Neil recorded 225 hits, which is second all-time to former teammate, RJ Neal. O’Neil also had a penchant for flashing the leather at the hot corner.

One year later, the Sand Sharks have found another potential fouryear starter at third base. Freshman, Brandon Joyce, has proven to be

a solid replacement for the Sand Sharks. Joyce, who bats from both sides of the plate, has played in 14 of USCB’s 18 games so far, and has only been getting better.

Joyce is coming off a remarkable series against Georgia Gwinnett College where he went 7-11 at the plate, which raised his batting average to .357. Joyce, who won the Monroe County Player of the Year award while at Coral Shores High School, has been a mainstay at third base since taking over February 9 against Webber International University.

Like O’Neil, it is not uncommon to see Joyce charge up the third base line to field a bunt barehanded while slinging the ball over to first base.

More often than not, Joyce will get the out on those plays. Sand Shark fans have gotten used to the luxury of outstanding defense at third base, and it seems as though they will not need to adjust their expectations for another four years.

Player Profile: Katie Rietkovich Softball - David Roberts, Sports Editor Rietkovich continues to shine.

In an offense that continues to punish opposing pitching, Katie Rietkovich has risen to the top of nearly every batting category. Rietkovich took home the team’s Most Valuable Player trophy last year and was named to the All-Sun Conference team.

This year, she leads the Sand Sharks in runs scored and is tied with teammate, CJ Browder, in doubles, home runs and total bases. The redshirt junior from Guyton, Ga. is also slugging an outstanding 1.045%.

After going 2-9 to start the season, head coach, Ty Rietkovich decided to switch his second baseman from

the third spot in the lineup to the leadoff position. The decision has paid off for Rietkovich and the Sand Sharks, as she has nine hits in her last thirteen plate appearances, including three home runs in her last two games.

In a matter of nine days, the Sand Shark slugger brought her batting average up from .143 to .500, where it currently is.

Along with her stellar offense, Rietkovich, who has started all eight games, has yet to make an error at second base.

Rietkovich and the Sand Sharks seem to be in control of everything but the weather. USCB (8-0)

was scheduled to play two doubleheaders—one at Truett-McConnell College and another at Emmanuel College—to finish out the month of March, but were unable because of the weather.

The Sand Sharks return to action in a doubleheader against Columbia College at home on Mar. 4. The first pitch is slated to take place at 4 p.m.

USCB Golf at Savannah Harbor - Samantha O’Donnell, Columnist Both the Men’s and Women’s golf teams were fortunate enough to play The Club at Savannah Harbor for their past two events. This is where the Champion’s Tour Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf tournament is held every year, so the student athletes were able to play the same course the pros play. The course was in flawless condition and the players enjoyed several views of downtown and the Savannah bridge while they competed.

The Women’s team played in the SCAD Spring Invitational on February 18th and 19th. This was a unique tournament for the girls because everyone was able to compete. Lindsey Mapes made her collegiate debut playing as an individual. Hayley Miller and Tori DeGroodt also competed as individuals.

The team finished in sixth place in a field of fourteen, several schools being Division II. Kelli Nakano shot a two day total of 158, tying for 10th place. Kait O’Sullivan made her spring season debut with a two day total of 161, tying for 20th place. Samantha O’Donnell finished with 169. Both Kendra Collins and Phyllis Langley finished with 170.

With a fair amount of wind and rain the second day, the team as a whole did not finished where they were expecting to. Junior Kendra Collins states, “We all need a decent amount of work on our wedge games, specifically 100 yards and in. If we can all get confident with this part of our games, we should be ready to play well in the next tournament.”

The Men’s team played an 18-hole dual match against SCAD at the Club at Savannah Harbor on February 15th . The team finished just five strokes short of winning the match against the Bees. Travis Cashion and Brian Langley led the Sandsharks with a pair of 73s. Cory Cottrell finished with a 75, Andrew McCullough fired a 79 and Alex Mihai shot an 80.

Freshman Bradford Curren earned medalist honors after shooting a 1-under par 71 as an individual. Other individuals from USCB were Tyler Jacobs (79), Owen Bell (77), Chris Finke (75) and Ryan Clancy (78).

The Women’s team competes again on March 4th and 5th at the AASU Pirate Invitational at Savannah Quarters. The Men’s team will compete against SCAD again in a dual match at their home course Oldfield Golf Club on Friday March 1st. They will also compete in the Doublegate Invitational in Albany, GA on March 4th and 5th.

Sand Shark Soccer Spring Update

Campus Mystery

- Brackin Lambert, Sports Columnist After the 2012 Sand Shark Soccer season ended with a 9-10 (4-5 Sun Conference) record, the 2013 team looks to continue moving in the right direction as the spring season is now in full swing.

With 5:30 a.m. workouts in the weight room and then conditioning practice at the field, coaches Ed Heberling and Hilary George are preparing their team for a strong run next season. The Sand Sharks traveled to the Citadel for their first scrimmage matches of the spring two weekends ago, facing off against the Citadel and Charleston Southern University. Each team only played one 45 minute half against each other.

In game one against the Citadel, the Sand Sharks kept pace with their Division I opponent, but the Bulldogs were able to put one goal on the board. That would be enough to end the contest in the Bulldog’s favor at the end of the 45 minute half.

Game two ended in similar fashion for the Sand Sharks, but this time with a score of 3-0.

Freshman defender Claire Kennedy had this to say about the upcoming season, “I am most looking forward to seeing how much this team has improved over the course of the off season and to see how much we have come together as team.”

Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Moldenhauer has been with the Sand Sharks since its inaugural season in 2011, and she has seen first-hand the changes that have occurred in that time. “Over the past two years we have had a lot of new faces on this team. Ever since then

- Contributed by: Ivan Van Driver we have been working together to build the foundation of this team,” Moldenhauer said. “We’ve been working hard this offseason to be prepared for our third season and we really want to build on the success from last season.”

The Sand Sharks will have their first home scrimmage on March 28.

The Tidal Tribune in the World Paul Lawrence, Lifestyle Editor An estimated 30 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. 3.3 million of these victims are under the age of 15. UNAIDS reports the SubSaharan region of Africa is most heavily affected by HIV. In 2011, sub-Saharan Africa accounted for approximately 69% of people living with HIV worldwide.

The White House reports 60% of new infections are among black youth, and over half of all HIV positive youth were unaware. Despite this the White House group was optimistic about meeting the goals of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy.

Significant advances have been made in HIV prevention– getting tested is easier than ever before, and medications have extended the lives of tens of thousands of people living with HIV. The Affordable Care Act is dramatically expanding coverage of HIV prevention services and medical care – in 2014, seven million uninsured African-Americans,

including thousands living with HIV, will have access to healthcare coverage.

Since 2000, HIV infection rates in the US have remained stable at 50,000 new infections each year.

To re-invigorate leadership and accountability in the domestic response to HIV, the Obama Administration released the first-ever comprehensive National HIV/AIDS Strategy.

The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is the global leader in implementing a wide range of effective activities that are turning the tide.

PEPFAR supports to 3.2 million people. This includes support to pregnant women allowing them to have a child free of HIV, which has resulted in an estimated 114,000 HIV-free births in 2010. PEPFAR has invested carefully, tailoring pre-

vention to countries’ urgent needs, using generic drugs, shipping more efficiently, and linking PEPFAR to other needed health services.

Effective programs towards HIV/AIDS prevention include: Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT): Pediatric HIV can be eliminated. PEPFAR has been the global leader in the effort to prevent mother-to-child transmission, preventing 200,000 infant infections in FY 2011 alone.

In the United States, mother-tochild transmission has declined by 90% since the early 1990’s.

Prevention for Key Populations: There is substantial evidence of the effectiveness of a core set of interventions for most-at-risk populations. The package of prevention services includes: risk reduction, including partner reduction, condoms and related services, Access to Sterile Syringes: Increasing the availability of sterile syringes is associated with significant reductions in HIV risk.

Elimination of needle sharing has been shown to reduce risky sexual behaviors.

to train caregivers in social protection policies and to defend children’s rights to information and dignity.

The Office of National AIDS Policy is part of the White House Domestic Policy Council and is tasked with coordinating the continuing efforts of the government to reduce the number of HIV infections across the United States. The Office of National AIDS Policy coordinates and works with international bodies to ensure that America’s response to the global pandemic is in rhythm with other efforts around the world. However, as the resources committed to AIDS and other major health problems continue to increase; better quality information is needed to strategically guide programming and funding.

“There’s no such thing. . . as ‘Fashionably Late” - Cameron Thomas, Columnist Former Major League Baseball pitcher, and my head coach for American Legion baseball, Scott Mullen, once said: “If you’re not 5 minutes early, you’re late.” He took this statement very seriously. If we didn’t show up to practice 5 minutes early, we would all run poles as a team (which means running from foul pole to foul pole for anyone who isn’t a baseball junkie). I’ve carried Coach Mullen’s statement with me ever since then, and have tried to apply it to my life every day. Whether it be showing up to class 5 minutes early, a dinner with my parents, etc.

Personally, I had been taught not to be late for anything at a very early age. I remember going to church on Sunday morning, and my dad would always leave the house in time to get there 15 minutes early.

I hated it because that meant less sleep, but I am glad he taught me that because there have been plenty of times that not being late to an event or class has saved me a good deal of trouble.

I asked a few friends of mine via Facebook what they thought of being late, and also if they think showing up early is in best interest to themselves and/or the other party who is hosting whatever kind of “event” that you may be attending.

One friend, who attends Newberry, stated, “I like to be able to show up to class a little early. Not necessarily 5 minutes early all the time, but definitely in time to set up all of my stuff for class like my notebook and such. I have one professor who locks the doors if you are late,

so myself and other students are always there no later than 5 minutes early so that we can get into class.” Another friend that goes to University of South Carolina had a different approach to the previous friend’s statement: “There are a few things that I feel like you should be a little early for. As for school, I personally feel like we’re all adult college students paying for our education, and we should be able to decide on if we even want to show up to our classes.”

I also sought to find out what a teacher thought about students being late to class. I asked my former math teacher in high school, Mr. Bill Girard, what his perspective was on his students showing up late. Mr. Girard is a very decorated high school teacher in Massachusetts, and he was also a college professor at University of Massachusetts for 5 years.

His take on college students being late was this: “It doesn’t bother me if the student isn’t a repeat offender, but when he or she abuses being late, well, that is quite annoying.

Yes, students in college say that they are paying for their education, but that does not mean that they shouldn’t get a good education while they’re there.” In an online survey done by justalyce.com, they state that the number one reason why people are late is because there is no reward for being on time. They say that “Unless there is a reward for being on time...or a punishment for not being on time... why not be late?” On the contrary, I personally believe the reward for

being on time in school is being on time and actually going to class. In my 3 years of college, I definitely know that teachers respect you a lot more for being in class and coming on time. I understand that people have personal things come up, that’s just life, and other legitimate reasons why they’re late, but there really is no excuse to be habitually late.

In closing, no, technically you do not have to arrive 5 minutes early to be on time, but I can guarantee you that if you make it a habit to be on time, you will be a lot more respected and it is just a good thing to practice in general.

Spring Break Tips - Ellza Hines, Columnist Normally spring break is the time to lounge around in bathing suits, soaking up the sun, but luckily our weather has been so cold. So we'll all be bundled up seeing getting no hint of a tan, unless by some chance you're going to some tropical area that is always warm. Either way, what ever you are doing for your spring break, be it fake tanning, not moving, or re-watching all of the twilight films, here are some tips!

Some things you pick up on Spring Break can't always be left there, so…

1. Use a condom 2. Bring your birth control 3. Be sure sex is consensual 4. If getting inked, be sure the equipment is sterile and you won't regret it in the morning

You can't talk about the things you don't remember, so…

1. Limit 1 drink per hour, or drink a water between drinks 2. Never leave your drink unattended 3. Get your friends help if they drink too much 4. Always know how you're getting home

Don't play the odds when it comes to your safety, so…

1. Travel in groups 2. Always carry I.D. with you 3. Keep some cash on you 4. Know local laws and how to contact authorities I'll personally be spending my spring break with five new born kittens and probably documenting their every move.

S. in the C. - Taylor Johnson, Pick Up Artist I’ve weighed in on the fashion trends that I’ve seen men wearing around campus, so I figured I’d give the “fairer” sex their turn as well.

I understand that some women have great taste in fashion. I also understand that the answer to, “What is ‘trashy’ in the world of women’s fashion?” is a slippery subject to discuss. However, I do believe that I am safe in saying that some women need a little help with the way that they dress.

1. The problem with some women’s choice of shorts, skirts, and pantaloons is: If the world can see your pale behind, then your shorts are, perhaps, too short.

2. The problem with some women’s choice of tops is: If you are very curvacious, believe me, guys will notice. We do not need you to wear a shirt that is three sizes too small with a very open neckline. We get it, you are proud of your body. Most guys are proud of their own bodies, but you don’t see us going scantily clad to class, now, do you?

2. I’m not one to criticize without backing up what I’m saying with intellectual insight, so here we go: I understand that women are dressing like this, ultimately, because they want to attract men. There’s nothing wrong with that. The problem is in the execution. I know that men’s minds are often in the gutters, but the best of us don’t want to see women walking around in tawdry clothing. We want a woman with a little class, and for God’s sake, a little mystery! Some women seem

to have this idea in their heads that amazing guys will only want to talk to them if they flaunt their figures.

Wrong!

It’s a very simple concept. If you don’t want us to treat you like a Jezebel, then don’t dress like one. If you want to be treated like a princess, then dress and act like one.

Quit agreeing to lower your standards and self-respect for the jerks who only want you for your body.

Make guys like you for more than just your bust size. Just as every man has the ability to sweep any woman off of her feet, so too does every woman have the ability to charm any man with the proper outlook, energy, and personality. None of those are displayed to men when you look like a harlot.

Hilton Head Farmer’s Market - Jessica Taylor, Columnist Grave news has fallen on our community recently. After two years of operation our local farmers market in Hilton Head Island has been closed down.

A place to get both fresh produce and conversation, the Hilton Head Island Farmers Market at Historic Honey Horn has brought over 75 small businesses together to sell their produce. Held on 70 Honey

Horn Plantation Road, the market was open to all every Friday. The Market sold fresh produce from apples to leeks to mixed leafy greens. Rebecca MacAlarney Smith and Co-Manager Pamela Martin Ovens took this business very seriously, even traveling to the 2011 Agriculture Conference in North Augusta, South Carolina on January 27, 2011 to learn more about the do's and don’ts of agriculture.

The Market had been in pursuit of directional signs for a long time.

The signs would direct potential customers to the market, as well as increase awareness of the market itself. Permission was granted from the Department of Transportation, as long as the Town of Hilton Head Island would agree.

Sadly, the Town did not agree.

Pamela Martin Ovens and Peter Ovens, operators of the Farmer’s Market, were given almost unlimited obstacles to overcome to keep this vibrant market operational.

They attended many meetings with the Land Management Ordinance (LMO) Committee and Town Council, discussing the need for visible signage. They were told that they could not have signs because they were not a nonprofit organization.

When the Owens went to speak with the Hilton Head Island Mayor Drew Laughlin they were told they would not be not be granted a place on the Town Council's next meeting agenda. The mayor explained that they would first have to go to the LMO Committee. If

the Committee agreed to change the ordinance to allow directional signs to groups that were not nonprofit, then they may be put on the agenda for a future meeting. The LMO Committee had a scheduled appearance at the Town Council's next meeting on February 27, 2013. However, the mayor felt that ultimately the Council would not agree with the idea for a sign, nor would the Town staff.

These obstacles grew too great for our lovely local market and they will be pulling up stakes. Pamela Martin Ovens and Peter Ovens have posted on their website (www.farmersmarkethiltonheadisland.com) a public explanation of the situation and a sincere apology for their departure. As a community we will miss our local market and its vendors. We also wish them a fond farewell.
