Is your identity safe? Probably not.

In today’s technologically advancing world, everyone has far easier access to information than ever before—and we aren’t talking about what your ex-best friend is doing these days according to his or her Facebook page. Far more importantly, there is much easier access to our personal information such as social security numbers, bank accounts, and credit card numbers.

People from all over the world are executing cyber attacks to steal people’s identities and their money.

According to the Beaufort Gazette, nearly 3.6 million South Carolina taxpayers had their identities compromised when a foreign hacker gained access to social security numbers and 387,000 credit card numbers from the South Carolina Department of Revenue back in September, 2012. It is an unfortunate thing to have happened and the South Carolina Department of Revenue is working on stronger security measures. In the meantime, they cannot get that information back from the hackers, so they have offered a service to all South Carolina taxpayers to sign up for free identity protection.

Many people think it is not a big deal and that if they just monitor their bank accounts they will be fine, after all “I am just a college student and I only work at a restaurant, I don’t have much money.” It

does not matter how much money you make or not—your social security number could be looming out there somewhere and affect you negatively now or years down the road.

I put off signing up for the identity protection until my bank called me and told me that there was a significant chance that my social security number and bank account information could have been compromised by the foreign hackers.

They advised me to close my bank account and open a new one, and also to sign up for the free identity protection services. I did both of these things soon after receiving the phone call, and I feel much safer because of it.

If you are a South Carolina taxpayer and have not yet signed up for the FREE identity protection services, you should consider doing so as it is a very quick and simple process that will take only a minute or two of your time. It is better to be safe than sorry. You can sign up for the free identity protection service by going to www.protectmyid.com/ scdor. Enter the code SCDOR123.

You must sign up for this free protection service before January 31, 2013. After that the offer for the free service will no longer be available, and users will have to pay for the identity protection services.

Your SGA at Work - From Staff Reports In case you missed them, your Student Government Association Senators have been working hard the past two weeks in order to correct a very important issue for our university. This is issue is known as Parity.

In short, parity refers to the way in which money is appropriated per South Carolina resident attending a state university. If you were not aware, the University of South Carolina Beaufort is one of the lowest funded locations for higher education in the state. As seen in the chart below, we are far below the Teaching Sector Average while other locations have multiples of our funding. As a university with excellent professors, intelligent students,

and limitless growing potential, it is fair to say that we should at least be “on par” with other universities in the eyes of the state legislature.

For this reason, a letter was drafted to be sent to be sent to the local representatives of residential South Carolinians urging them to correct this issue.

A copy of said letter can be seen below. If you are a residential student who would like to make a difference for your university, please feel free to copy and mail one of these letters to your representative.

The Letter- My name is (student name), and I am proud to be a student at the University of South Carolina Beaufort! As a (year in school) majoring in (insert major), I am very pleased to be receiving my undergraduate education at this fine institution where the emphasis is on both teaching as well as the student experience.

While this may be true, I am writing you today to express my concerns about an issue called Parity.

As I have learned more about the way in which South Carolina funds its higher education opportunities, it has come to my attention that there are significant funding disparities between state universities. In

specific, it appears that amounts appropriated per South Carolina resident student are arbitrary across institutions. As a South Carolinian, I believe it is only fair for all universities to have a “level playing field” when it comes to the way that their university is funded.

In the 2012 fiscal year, the average funding per full time equivalent South Carolina resident for institutions in the teaching sector was $2,487. In contrast, USCB received only $940 per South Carolina resident served.

In addition, private higher education institutions in South Carolina continue to be supported by the Tuition Grants Commission which on average allocates $2356. I cannot say how unjust I find this situation to be for South Carolina residents such as myself and other students attending the University of South Carolina Beaufort.

I believe that one of the top priorities in the legislature for the University of South Carolina System is a parity allocation to bring the USC institutions up to the average funding of $2,487 per South Carolina resident. For USC Beaufort, this would be an allocation of $2,240,000.

I hope I can count on you to correct this unfortunate situation. All South Carolina residents deserve to have the same state investment in our college education. Thank you for acknowledging my position on this important issue.

Professor Profiles - Brandon Deloach, Calendarist Each new semester brings new faces to the USCB campus, not only the faces of new students, but also the faces of new professors at this expanding school. Last semester the history department welcomed a new member in Dr. Brent Morris.

Dr. Morris grew up in Chapin South Carolina. He went to USC to do his Undergraduate work; he started off only minoring in history. This changed when he did an independent study with Dr. Walter Edgar. The Independent study got Dr. Morris even more interested in history. Even though Dr. Morris got his undergraduate degree in history from USC he had a tough choice on whether he wanted to pursue a career as a Lawyer or if he wanted to do his graduate work and continue

with history. He went to law school for one year before deciding to go and do his graduate work in History instead. He did his graduate work at Cornell University. Dr. Morris’s focus is on 19th century American history focusing mainly on slavery and anti-slavery. Dr. Morris is currently working on his final revisions for a book on the abolitionist movement which should be published soon.

On top of teaching here at USCB Dr. Morris has also taught at both USC Aiken and Sumter. He has been teaching for three years now.

Dr. Morris says that one of the biggest perks of being at USCB is the great people he works with being in a perfect area for his research on slavery.

Budding Musician Rocks USCB - David Roberts, Sports Editor The University of South Carolina Beaufort hosted musician, Kurt Scobie, Friday night inside the Lazy Lounge. Scobie is an Atlantabased singer/songwriter/pianist who is on tour after releasing his second studio album entitled “The Hopeful Broken.” Scobie played selections from his previously released work, playing a style he calls “Piano-Driven Rock/Pop.” This was Scobie’s second visit to USCB with his initial visit to the South Campus coming back in 2011.

Scobie is a Michigan native who chose the path to musicianship at a young age. “I come from a musical family,” Scobie said, recalling his past. “My parents both did music a little bit and me and my siblings had all sorts of talents. I sang in choirs, bands, and a whole bunch of stuff.” Growing up, Scobie took piano lessons from a teacher who he admired and eventually helped shape his future. Scobie stayed involved with music throughout his education and, after playing drums in a band in high school, decided to pursue a career as a musician.

“I decided, right after high school, to be a full-time musician which I have been for five years now, traveling the country and playing songs,” said Scobie.

Since then, Scobie has produced two full-length studio albums (Crash [2011], The Hopeful Broken [2012]) and a live album.

Scobie, who puts his style in the same category as Billy Joel and Jon Mclaughlin, will make his way back to the Southeast in lateFebruary after touring the Midwest

USCB’s Weight-Loss Challenge “What do you have to lose?”

in the beginning of the month. The rock pianist also plans to return to the studio at some point in 2013. “You never know where the road will take you,” Scobie said. “I’m definitely planning on releasing another studio project that will hopefully get out by the end of the year.”

Benedetto Custom Guitars - Paul Lawrence, Columnist 2013 marks the 45th anniversary of Benedetto Guitar Company. The Savannah based guitar shop was founded in 1968 by Robert Benedetto. Benedetto specializes in crafting custom guitars. “Robert Benedetto is widely acknowledged as today’s foremost maker of archtop guitars.

He has handcrafted nearly 800 instruments, including 500 archtops.”

From 1999 to 2006 Fender produced Benedetto Guitars in their own factory. Then in 2006 Savannah Jazz Festival Vice President, Howard Paul, joined the company. Mr. Paul introduced a more affordable guitar line and since Benedetto has truly taken off. The Smithsonian Institute has a Benedetto guitar on display.

Benedetto Guitar supports the low country community and local music festivals. The company is an international force, exporting guitars globally. Benedetto guitars are desired worldwide.

America is often defined by symbols of freedom, liberty and prosperity, but underneath all of that patriotic rubbish is a lovely roll of fat. That’s right—America also has a growing obesity epidemic, one that affects over 30 percent of the country’s adult population. This is what led Lindsay Logue, coordinator of fitness and recreation, to create the USCB Weight-Loss Challenge program in 2012.

On January 28, the six week long contest will kickoff it’s second year.

Modeled after NBC’s, “The Biggest Loser”, the challenge promotes

losing weight and life changing health decisions. Students, Faculty and Staff are all encouraged to create teams of two and compete in the challenge. Logue believes that “competition brings out the best in people, and that it’s the easiest way of getting people involved in the program.” Just like a modern day Katniss and Peta, competing with a partner creates accountability and a motivational drive to succeed. This is not to say that the road ahead will not be tough.

When interviewed, Rachel Hoover, a previous contestant and the Director of Career Services, suggested that the most difficult part of the program was finding the time to participate. “You just really have to find what works best for you, whether it’s going on pintrest to find healthy recipies or quick workouts.

If you don’t make it something that will last forever, then it will be lost after the competition is over”, says Hoover.

As we all know there is the dreaded freshmen fifteen, sophomore twenty, junior twenty-five, and senior thirty.

With our hectic lifestyles, college weight gain is almost inevitable and it creates habits that will carry on for the rest of our life. For instance, eating that late night pizza pocket or drinking that fourth mocha Frappuccino may be the tipping point for your daily calorie intake. Those calories add up to become extra pounds. So whether you want to shed some pounds, or some stress, Lindsay Logue and all of the staff in fitness and recreation encourage you to participate in this year’s USCB Weight-Loss Challenge.

The Pick-Up Artist - Taylor Johnson, Pick-Up Artist I've spent the last two years studying how to be an amazing pickup artist. I'm not going to lie, it changes a man when he learns how to successfully attract most, if not all women. But, with great power comes great responsibility. And, like every other game, you have to be willing to follow the rules and play ethically when you are out in the field, running routines on women. After spending some time out in the field and looking at the methods of the competition, I've got to say that the majority of men out picking up women have lazy executions and even lazier morals.

Aspiring hot shots, listen up. One, if your routine is centered around alcohol, your game is incredibly weak. Two, if you run routines on women who are already in committed relationships, your game is more pathetic than words can describe.

Now, if you happen to be a guy who falls into one, or both of those categories, listen up, because frankly, you make me want to kick you in the southern islands, give you an extremely painful, girly scream-inducing titty twister, and lastly, a swift and firm backhanded pimp slap across your face like the ungrateful man-whore that you are.

Pick-up artist disgrace #1: Basing a pick-up routine around alcohol. So, maybe you're the kind of guy who has to drink a few beers before he attempts a pick-up. You're an idiot.

There are two obvious problems with your routine. One, when you're drunk, you slur, stumble, and smell; girls are generally not attracted to that. If they are, then enjoy the AIDS you'll likely contract later on that night. Two, when you have to drink before you initiate a routine, it makes you look like someone who has no self-esteem, no balls, and no shot. When they turn you down in two seconds, come find me at the other end of the bar; I'll be the guy telling a whole line of idiots just like you that I told you so. Okay, so what if you're the guy who has to get women drunk in order to pick them up? First, look up at the comment in italics above. I'll give you a second to find it......Do you see it? Good. Now, look back

down here. There are two obvious problems with your routine as well.

One, the fact that you have to make sure that a woman is out of her right state of mind to talk to you, should go to tell you something about yourself and your game. If you don't know why, then refer back to the italics. Moving on. Two, if you're gladly obliging a woman's orders for alcohol, it makes you look like a push over and loser; play hard to get. Be the one that she screws, not screws over. And make sure that she remembers your amazing skills in the sack. She can't exactly do that if she blacks out now will she?

No she won't. And she'll likely end up accusing you of raping her when she wakes up. You don't want that.

Pick-up artist disgrace #2: Going after girlfriends. There are billions of single women in the world, why go after someone who is no longer playing the game? You can talk and

laugh all you want, but true pick-up artists know when to give respect to a man who has made a commitment to a woman, and to let that fish go. That rule was evidently clear to me when I was single, and it's still as clear as crystals to me now that I'm in a committed relationship. Don't be one of those idiots who hit on women when they tell you they have a boyfriend and aren't interested. Let me guess, you use lines like "If he loves you so much, why isn't he here?" Simple answer, douche: Her boyfriend is probably busy at home or at the office, working hard so he can provide for his loved one and be successful in life; you know, grown up responsibilities. If you don't know what I mean, go ask mommy and daddy.

That shouldn't be too hard, after all, you're probably still living with them. As Patrick Swayze once said, "Just put your pickle on the plate, little boy, and leave the hard stuff to me". Now, I'm going to carefully remove my foot from up your butt hole, and when I do, I want you to remove your head from up there and go after the five single women who have been waiting for your sorry behind all night long. If you'd like any other advice, feel free to stop by again, okay, pumpkin?

The Freshman Blog: Jobs - Cassidy Perrine, Blogger I love Ramen noodles as much as the next girl, but there comes a time when you’ve had enough packaged MSG. Out of my natural desire to consume actual food, it has come time for me to quit spending all of my time in the lounge and find a job. I will start this post by pointing out it is NOT easy to find a job in college if you are slack. Your first excuse if your parents suggest you find gainful part time employment will probably go something like mine: “but moooooooom, everyone here is looking for a job… can you just buy stuff for me?” (Spoiler alert: She doesn’t fall for it.) So goes the search for a part time job.

My first suggestion if you’re looking for a job in college is to check on campus. The people who work at USCB aren’t stupid: they know college students are poor. And there are jobs you can have, on campus, so you don’t have to spend your time commuting. However, I tend to procrastinate on tasks such as these until the issue becomes a crisis.

Therefore, I had to begin my hunt off campus.

In the spirit of laziness, my first attempt at job hunting was at the Tanger Outlets down the street.

The outlets are great because the drive isn’t too far, and there are a lot of stores all together, so you’re bound to find someone with a “Help Wanted” sign.

My personal job hunt took me to three or four different stores along the same strip. After many interviews and calls back and places that didn’t call at all, I have comprised a list of my own tips for anyone looking for an off-campus part time job: Be upfront about your class schedule. A paycheck is nice, but keeping your GPA decent and graduating on time is way better. So make sure they know exactly when you have class, and be sure to include travel time.

Be yourself. The people interviewing you know you’re in college.

They know you don’t have years of experience. They know you might not have any at all. Just be as friendly as possible, and you’ll stand out.

Finally, let your friends help you.

My roommates don’t have jobs. But I told them about all the places I tried, and their pep talks before interviews and encouragement really did help! Your friends love you. And they want to see you succeed. So let them help you out!

Short list? Maybe. But who wants to read an entire list of tips? Not I. In the end, by the way, I did end up finding a job without too much responsibility that was willing to work with my class schedule. And you can, too, if you just put yourself out there.

2013 Sand Shark Softball Season Preview - Brackin Lambert, Sports Columnist As the USCB softball team’s second season is quickly approaching, the Sand Sharks are back into the swing of things with the semester just beginning.

Coach Ty Rietkovich had the girls return to campus a week early so the team could practice without the worry of school and their studies.

“We’re starting earlier this year, which is good,” Rietkovich said.

“It’s one of the reasons we brought the girls back before school started so that we could have full team time

... so that at least for the first three days here we can focus on nothing but softball.”

With the highly anticipated season opener just a little less than three weeks away the Sand Sharks have high expectations after finishing their inaugural season 37-11 and finishing second in the Sun Conference. USCB has the entire starting lineup from 2012 returning in 2013, but with a new season comes new faces and that has increased the level of intensity at practice. Coach Rietkovich says the starting lineup

for opening day is not yet set in stone.

“You could see us in February, with eight games in February start eight different starting lineups,” he said.

When the Sand Sharks took the field on Thursday it was the first time since being picked to win the

Sun Conference this past fall. As well as having a preseason ranking of No. 21 in the NAIA. The Sand Sharks’ second season will begin on Saturday, Feb. 2 at home starting at 1 p.m. against St. Andrews University. All Sand Shark home games once again will be played at the Richard Gray Sports Complex in Hardeeville.

Opportunity Opens Doors for Sand Shark Baseball - David Roberts, Sports Editor One year after the University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team’s most successful season in school history, little looks the same. Gone is the towering Michael Heesch, who shattered the school’s strikeout record on his way to a 9-3 record, which was good enough to make him an eighth-round selection by the Chicago Cubs in this past year’s MLB Draft. Also gone is catcher, Dylan Nasiatka, who led the team in putouts (362) and tied David O’Neil for the team lead in hits (66) last season. Along with Heesch and Nasiatka are 15 other Sand Sharks who have since picked up a ball for the last time at Richard Grey Baseball Complex and have graduated.

The Sand Sharks will trade experience for opportunity this season as positions all over the diamond will

be made available to newcomers and underclassmen. “We’ve got a lot of guys who are capable; a lot of guys who do good things; some new guys; some guys who were around last year,” said head coach Brian Lewallyn. “I think we have a lot of guys who are capable of taking advantage of the opportunities in front of them. We’ll just see who takes it and runs with it.”

One familiar face this season, however, will be former interimhead coach, Brian Lewallyn, who was officially named head coach after leading the Sand Sharks to a school-record 41 wins en-route to the Avista-NAIA World Series.

Lewallyn took over the team in the offseason last year after head coach, Rick Sofield, departed for the minor-leagues to fill a vacant managerial position in the Pitts-

burgh Pirates organization. Lewallyn coached the Sand Sharks to a secondplace finish in the Sun Conference standings, finishing one game behind Embry-Riddle.

Another newcomer to the Sand Sharks is assistant coach, Wes Gilmer, who joined the USCB coaching staff in the offseason after playing four years for the Auburn Tigers and serving one year there as a student assistant coach in 2012. “He’s helping tremendously,” Lewallyn said of the Auburn graduate. “Offensively, defensively, recruiting and bringing in some experience of playing in the SEC and coaching in the SEC. It’s tremendous and it frees me up to do a little more of working with the pitchers or the catchers or whatever the case may be, so it’s been a big help.”

Though experience is one thing

Lewallyn lost with last year’s senior class, his confidence is still high.

“There certainly are some very capable guys that didn’t get a lot of playing time behind them last year and some new guys that we’ve brought in,” Lewallyn said of his 2013 squad. “If nothing else, there’s a ton of opportunity, so the guys who are new here or the guys who were here last year who didn’t play a lot see that and they know that there’s a lot of opportunity available, so we’ll just see where they go with it.”

Lewallyn will take his new-look Sand Sharks up against Shawnee State University (Ohio) for back-toback doubleheaders on Feb. 2 and Feb. 3, with both afternoon games slated to begin at 12 p.m.

South Carolina Politics: Special Election Update - Tyler Cobb, Layout Editor Governor Haley appointed Tim Scott, a former House Representative for South Carolina, to the senate after the resignation of Jim DeMint. Tim Scott had previously represented the 1st Congressional district of South Carolina, which includes most of the Lowcountry.

Scott is the only African-American currently serving in the U.S. Senate, and the first from the state of South Carolina, making his congressional appointment historic. A special election will be held on May 7, 2013, to fill Scott’s previous post.

Sen. Tim Scott Previous Governor, Mark Sanford, has decided to take a break from “hiking the Appalachian Trail” to enter his name into the bid for special election. For those who don’t follow politics, or the news in general, Sanford was the governor before Nikki Haley. He confessed to having a extramarital affair with a woman in Argentina in June of 2009. After this announcement, Sanford eventually stepped down from his governorship and remained relatively quiet until entering the special election. Sanford has name recognition and leadership qualities, but will Bible-belt voters be

forgiving of his previous transgressions? My guess is that they probably wont be willing to give him a second chance, but Sanford held this post for three terms prior to his governorship, so it’s a toss up.

We The People - Ashton Bowns, Columnist Since the re-election of President Barack Obama the “We The People” website has been overwhelmed with petitions to secede from the United States. The “We The People” website is for any citizen to engage their government on any particular issue that matters to them. After any petition has 25,000 signatures within 30 days of the submission, the issue goes before the White House. The true question is how serious is the “We The People” website? The website contains petitions about granting certain individuals a full pardon for legally growing medical marijuana to granting an individual a new Social Security number. Anyone can create any bizarre or serious petition they so desire. To sign or start a profile on the “We The People” website one must provide their name, e-mail, and their resident information, but how hard or easy is it to create a profile under a fake identity?

Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, and South Carolina all have met the 25,000-signature mark on their petitions for their state to secede from the United States. It has taken months for the White House to address some petitions, and there has been no comment made by any White House representative concerning the secession petitions so far. Texas is in the lead with around 119,000 signatures. The South Carolina petition has barely reached the 25,000 mark and reads: WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO: Peacefully grant the State of S.C. to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government.

As the founding fathers of the United States of America made clear in the Declaration of Independence in 1776: "When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation."

The South Carolina petition was started on November 10th, and under went White House review.

Once the White House reviewed the petition the grant to withdraw from the United States was declined.

The Director of the Office of Public Engagement, Jon Carson, said, “as much as we value a healthy debate, we don't let that debate tear us apart.” The South Carolina reached a little over 25,000 signatures, but is a state with over four million citizens, which leads to only a .005% representation of the state.

Underneath South Carolina’s petition there were signatures from residents in Utah, California, Nebraska, Washington, and many more states.

How can a resident of another state determine the fate of another state not their own? Realistically speaking, the states are not going to be granted a withdrawal from the United States, but their concerned voices will be heard. Also under review is a petition asking to deport all citizens who signed secession petitions. The White House will be addressing these petitions in the coming months. Want your voice to be heard? Women’s Golf Excited for a Strong Spring Season - Samantha O’Donnell, Columnist USC Beaufort’s women’s golf team tees off their spring season February 10th and 11th at the World Golf Invitational in St. Augustine, FL. The team will be led by its three strong seniors; Phyllis Langley, Kelli Nakano and Kait O’Sullivan.

The Lady Sandsharks finished the season at 13th place in their NAIA division at the end of the fall season after a brutal concluding tournament in Cleveland, Tennessee. With temperatures below 50 degrees and winds up to 35mph, it’s safe to say the weather was not ideal for golf.

USCB Club Basketball Q&A - Cameron Thomas, Columnist After three seasons of competing against local club teams, the USCB Club Basketball team will look to start their fourth season with a big spark. “I feel like we’re ready,” stated co-captain Tevin Small, “We have a solid group of guys and we are looking forward to the season.”

I reached out to the head basketball coach, Aurel Stuart, and asked him some questions to familiarize us students and also the faculty of this club basketball team. Below are some Q’s & A’s regarding the basketball team:

Q: What exactly is this basketball team? Is it associated with the school by intramural sports or is it a club team?

A: This is a Club Basketball Team, and this will be the 4th season in which the team has actively competed.

Q: How many people are on the roster? Is it 5vs5?

A: All league basketball teams play 5 on 5 games. There are a total of 16 players on the 2012-13 Team. Six players are returnees from the team that finished as the league runner-up in the highly competitive CBA. Q: Who all do you all play during the season?

A: USCB plays in the Effingham County Industrial League and the CBA (Coastal Basketball Association). Both leagues feature former college players along with local standouts.

Q: What days do you all play on and what time? Where?

A: USCB will play on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in the ECL at the Effingham County Gym beginning January 8, 2013. The CBA begins in March of 2013 and USCB is slated to play on Monday and Wednesday evenings at the former Hardeeville High School gym.

Final schedules have yet to be released.

Q: Is there a team captain?

Q: When does the season start?

A: Captains for this year’s team are Tevin Small and Ben Calderon, both sophomores and second year players on the USCB squad.

A: The season starts in January, 2013 with USCB scheduled to play its first game on January 8.

Q: How do people sign up/try out to play for next season?

A: Announcements are posted on Campus Media and Bulletin Boards in October of each year concerning Tryouts for the Team.

Beyond Players, the Team is in need of a Stats Manager, a Publicist, and Van Drivers.

Q: What is the team's name?

A:USCB CLUB BASKETBALL, also known as the USCB Sand Sharks Q: What was your team's record last year? Did you win any tournaments or awards?

A: USCB finished second in its Division in the ECL, and it finished as the Championship Playoff Runnerup in the CBA. Q: How often do you all practice?

A: Without a gym available on the USCB campus, we are only able to practice twice a week during the pre-season and then once a week during the season. The team rents gym time at the AGAPE Family Life Center in Hardeeville.

Q: What are your thoughts on how well the team chemistry is?

A: With six returning veterans for leadership, the new players are following their example and working hard to make this Team one the student body will appreciate and actively support. About 30 students recently showed up to support the Team in a recent pre-season game at the AFLC. Q: Do you think that there will there be a basketball team next year?

A: Unfortunately, no. USCB is without a gym and budget limitations, coupled with other priorities, moved back initial plans to have a Team competing in NAIA games.

The next step might be to schedule some pre-season or exhibition games with other colleges as an interim step to launching a formal USCB Team. Hopefully our success with young non-scholarship players will capture the administration’s attention and speed up the process for a developing an NAIA Basketball Team at USCB.

Sun Conference All-Star Game - Contributed by Justin Jarrett, USCB Sports Information Director DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Five University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball players saw action for the North squad in the annual Sun Conference All-Star Game on Saturday at Sliwa Stadium.

Infielders Erik Armstrong and Terry McClinton and outfielder Ryan Doeppel were in the starting lineup and pitchers Kyle McCullough and Miles Galvin each threw an inning in relief for the North, which lost 7-4 to its South counterparts in the 11-inning game.

McClinton, who started at second base and batted second, went 0-for-1 with two walks and an RBI

groundout. He also stole a base and had three assists and two putouts.

Armstrong, batting fifth and playing first base, and Doeppel, batting eighth and playing left field, each went 0-for-2.

While serving as USCB's interim head coach during the 2012 season, Lewallyn led the Sand Sharks to a best-ever 41-19 record and their first trip to the Avista-NAIA World Series. Lewallyn was rewarded by being named the second head coach in USCB baseball's four-year history, succeeding Rick Sofield.

Restaurant Week on Hilton Head Island - Jessica Taylor, Columnist 5th Annual Chamber Restaurant Week, being held January 26- February 2, 2013 Restaurant Week was originally modeled after similar events held in New York and Los Angeles.

Restaurant Week is going on its 5th year running and offers great deals and special prices on their “prix fixe” menus. We all know Hilton Head Island to be clamorous during the summer time but during fall through spring things really quiet down. Local restaurants needed a festive plan to bring in the locals and tourists for a great meal and a great time during the off season and so Restaurant Week formed. Many USCB students work in this local event working diligently to make sure the customers are having the best time and getting the best deals.

Jessie Sandusky works as a server at the local and delicious restaurant called Neo Farm to Table Gastropub which serves farm to table meals. I interviewed Jessie to get a view of the inner workings of Restaurant Week.

Jessica: Is this your first time participating as a worker in Restaurant Week?

Sandusky: Yes this is my first being involved with restaurant week and I’m very excited about it.

Jessica: What are the benefits of Restaurant Week?

Sandusky: We get a lot of people who come in to try new things and they get to experience what they

Sandusky: It’s well known on the island but not as much so in Bluffton. It was started by the Chamber of Commerce in Hilton Head.

Sandusky: Mostly through Facebook, word of mouth and the Hilton Head Chamber of Commerce is advertising it extensively.

Jessica: Is Restaurant Week helping local businesses? And is it changing people’s attitudes towards local dining?

Sandusky: It does cause people don’t want a big elaborate meal all the time, sometimes they just want to try what we have and expand their view on local restaurants by trying new things.

Jessica: What deals are Neo bringing to its customers during this event?
