Internationally Acclaimed Sculptor Ivan Albreht to Exhibit at USCB Sea Islands Center March 18 - April 26 BEAUFORT, SC – An internationally acclaimed sculptor who has exhibited his ceramic pieces on three continents will present his latest exhibition, Ivan Albreht: Recent Works, at the University of South Carolina Beaufort Sea Islands Center from March 18 through April 26.

Ivan Albreht, assistant professor of ceramics at the University of Miami, will be honored at the opening reception for the exhibit March 18 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the USCB Sea Islands Center. The works in his exhibit utilize decaled porcelain platters to explore issues of socio-politics, identity and beauty.

Born and raised in Belgrade, formerly Yugoslavia and now the Republic of Serbia, Albreht graduated from the Academy of Applied Arts in Belgrade in 1997 and, in 2001, defended a

magisterial thesis in ceramic sculpture at the academy. In 2004, he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.

Albreht has exhibited his works internationally in 10 European countries, in South Korea and Taiwan in Asia, and in the United States since 1997. In 2007, he was awarded Special Prize at the 4th World Ceramic Biennial in Korea. He has served as an elected member of the International Academy of Ceramics since 2009. For the past five years, he has been in charge of the ceramics program at the University of Miami. His works are included in public and private collections around the world.

“My current work explores issues of individuality in the sociopolitical context of the Western society,” Albreht says. “I am specifically interested in ways in which technological advancement, consumerism and global politics influence the emergence of an individual. I find this constructed individual dormant and passive. In my work, I speak about his latent state, a loss of identity.

“Consequently, I am engaged in exploring aesthetic qualities of the visual language challenged to find a suitable form each time I raise questions about identity. I am particularly interested in the perception of beauty in Western society as being reduced to external appearances. I see ‘beauty’ in my artwork as a means to ‘hide’ its alternative. The goal of juxtaposed elements is to awake. Awakening comes from the unexpected.”

The USCB Sea Islands Center is located at 1106 Carteret Street in Beaufort. The center’s gallery is open Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is no charge for admission.
