TABLE OF CONTENTS
WELCOME DEAN BRETT STEELE
This year we celebrate the 64th USC Architectural Guild Awards, a singular event that brings together leading designers, architects, builders, and developers to recognize and honor outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to shaping our cities, landscapes, and the built environment— reimagining communities with strength, sustainability, and vision.
The USC Architectural Guild Awards is also the premier fundraising event for the USC School of Architecture.
This is only possible through the dedication and tireless effort of our Guild Members who have volunteered
their time and resources to garner support to fund scholarships and academic enrichment programs that set up our students for success. We sincerely thank the USC Architectural Guild for their invaluable service.
The theme, Celebrating the Past, Present, and Future of Los Angeles, reflects our commitment to preserving the city's rich architectural heritage while embracing a future defined by innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability.
In light of the January fires that have challenged our communities and reshaped our landscape, this moment calls for a renewed commitment to
resilient and forward-thinking design approaches that ensure a thriving Los Angeles for generations to come.
This year’s Guild Awards is more than a celebration; it is a call to action. Together, we can foster collaborative discussions and drive forward bold solutions that reimagine Los Angeles as a city that harmoniously balances preservation, progress, and resilience.
Tonight, it is our privilege to acknowledge these accomplished and highly respected awardees.
The Impact Award honors Peyton Hall FAIA, a nationally recognized expert in heritage conservation and a distinguished architect whose dedication to historic architecture has enriched the cultural and civic fabric of Los Angeles. Peyton has dedicated his career to preserving and revitalizing historic buildings, ensuring that the past continues to serve future generations. As a preservation advocate and faculty at the USC School of Architecture, he is advancing the field through teaching a new generation of students who have made a commitment to heritage conservation.
Nadine Watt (MA ’94) is the recipient of the Distinguished Business Leadership Award in recognition of
her visionary leadership in real estate development, sustainability, and community impact. As CEO of Watt Capital Partners, she oversees strategic planning for all commercial investment activities including acquisitions, development, and asset management for the company’s 3.5 million-squarefoot portfolio. Nadine is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Southern California and we at the School of Architecture are reminded of Watt’s legacy each and every day. Students, faculty, staff, and visitors for the past fifty years have walked past the Watt family name, which adorns our main building here on campus.
This year we honor esteemed alumna Bonnie Khang-Keating (B.Arch ’92) with the Distinguished Alumni Award. Bonnie’s dedication to architecture and design excellence spans a three-decade career marked by her outstanding business and community leadership. Bonnie is a recognized leader in the local design community—serving as a design commissioner for the City of Pasadena and a cultural heritage commissioner for the City of Los Angeles. In addition, Bonnie serves on the Board of Councilors of the USC School of Architecture. Bonnie is the national Director of Strategic Relationships and Advisory Services
at SmithGroup Los Angeles and San Diego, serving as a Chairperson for SmithGroup’s Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee and sitting on the firm’s Board of Directors.
The Distinguished Firm Award is presented to AC Martin, a legacy firm whose work has been integral to defining the past, present, and future of Los Angeles. For nearly 120 years, AC Martin has played a pivotal role in shaping the skyline and civic identity of Los Angeles—leading the way in commercial, educational, multi-family residential, and mixed-use projects that define the region's evolving urban landscape. AC Martin's legacy is deeply intertwined with the USC School of Architecture. Multiple generations of the Martin family, many who are also part of the Trojan Family, have played absolutely transformative roles in the firm and across the architecture of Los Angeles and beyond.
The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Thom Mayne (B.Arch ’69) FAIA, a Pritzker Prizewinning architect and the founder of Morphosis, a globally recognized interdisciplinary firm known for
its groundbreaking work across cultural, civic, and academic institutions. Thom Mayne, throughout his decades-long career, has shaped the profession through his design excellence, research-driven practice, and commitment to the next generation of architects. Thom’s enduring influence on architecture, imprinted upon Southern California and beyond, and the evolving cultural, technological, and social landscapes exemplifies the essence of lifetime achievement.
Thank you to our awardees, alumni, board of councilors, friends and the entire USC Architectural Guild, for your partnership and support. Together, we will relentlessly pursue our important work to create and make spaces in the world where diverse communities and future generations will thrive.
Fight on!

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD BONNIE KHANGKEATING ’92
This year we honor Bonnie Khang-Keating (B.Arch ’92) with the DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD. Given annually to alumni of the USC School of Architecture in recognition of outstanding achievement, this award recognizes 1) exemplary achievement in architecture and related fields, 2) outstanding level of service to the professional and/or academic community, 3) recognized leadership in working to create a more equitable and inclusive world.
Bonnie Khang-Keating’s dedication to architecture spans three decades of a career that began at the age of 15 as a high school intern at an architecture firm in Santa Monica. Born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in Pacific Palisades, Bonnie earned her Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Southern California.
Her unique aptitude for business, coupled with her eye for design, supported her role as Office Director for SmithGroup Los Angeles and San Diego for many years, expanding the firm’s portfolio and staff in Southern California, and building an office culture that is entrepreneurial, diverse, and fun. Currently, Bonnie is the national Director of Strategic Relationships and Advisory Services at SmithGroup, serves as a Chairperson for SmithGroup’s Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee and is on the firm’s Board of Directors.
Bonnie is a recognized leader in the local design community—serving as a design commissioner for the City of Pasadena and a cultural heritage commissioner for the City of Los Angeles. As an advocate for women in design and construction, Bonnie has led the industry in integrated design, design-build, and business strategy. But among the myriad of her awards, speaking engagements, project nominations and business ventures— she puts design excellence first.
In addition to serving on the Board of Councilors of the USC School of Architecture, Bonnie currently serves on the Board of the Pasadena Conservatory of Music, and recently initiated the Keating Visiting Architect program at the Architecture Department of Barnard College, Columbia University.

I AM DEEPLY HONORED AND HUMBLED TO BE NAMED A DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI OF THE USC SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE. USC WAS THE FOUNDATION WHERE MY PASSION FOR DESIGN BEGAN TO FLOURISH, AND IT HAS GUIDED ME THROUGHOUT MY JOURNEY AS A DESIGN LEADER IN LOS ANGELES. THIS RECOGNITION IS A REMINDER OF THE PRIVILEGE AND RESPONSIBILITY WE HOLD TO CREATE SPACES THAT INSPIRE AND SHAPE THE CULTURE OF OUR COMMUNITIES. MOST MEANINGFUL OF ALL HAVE BEEN THE RELATIONSHIPS I’VE FORMED ALONG THE WAY; WITH CLIENTS WHO TRUSTED THE VISION, COLLEAGUES WHO ELEVATED THE WORK, AND MENTORS WHOSE WISDOM CONTINUES TO GUIDE ME.

ABOUT USC ARCHITECTURE
USC Architecture shapes visionary architects and designers through a rigorous, interdisciplinary education. For more than 100 years, USC Architecture faculty and graduates have pushed beyond the traditional boundaries of the field to pioneer many paradigm shifting new practices of architecture. Deeply rooted in the City of Los Angeles and also intensely connected to global concerns, USC architects and scholars work shoulder to shoulder with our surrounding communities to develop, empower, and leverage local insight that enables them to become intelligent and intrepid practitioners and forge creative solutions.
The school’s legacy is defined by the value its faculty and graduates contribute to the future of the profession—and to our world. We synthesize learnings from research, the classroom, and the field to create a holistic and informed view on the discipline. We believe that great architecture, landscapes, and cities find their most powerful expression through their impact on the persons who inhabit them and experience them, now and into the future.
Founded in 1958, the USC Architectural Guild provides guidance and insight into real-world experiences for students beyond the classroom. The Guild encourages its alumni and non-alumni members and peers—leaders in architecture, design, construction, engineering, finance, and real estate development—to give back and lead the way in career development and mentorship, scholarship and global fellowship support, and technology and material resources. Through knowledge, networking, and real-world experience, the Architectural Guild enriches and amplifies the USC education, inspiring architectural students to find purpose, meaning, and fulfillment in their pursuits.
Annually, the Guild raises significant funds for student scholarship and provides professional development through activities such as the mentorship program, the Design Charrette, and Career Week. The latter offers professional development workshops and culminates in a Firm Fair, where students network and explore opportunities for internships and jobs with top local and national firms.

Our family proudly congratulates Bonnie Khang-Keating—our mother, sister, daughter, and my wife—on this welldeserved honor, which reflects the spirit and character that have defined her both as a person and as a leader in the field of architecture. Much of this foundation was shaped during her time at the USC School of Architecture.
With deep love and admiration, Richard Keating and Family
