A USC Architecture alumnus and the founder and design principal of Synthesis Design + Architecture, Huang joined the USC Architecture faculty in 2011. He is an award-winning architect, designer, and educator specializing in the integrated application of material performance, emergent design technologies, and digital fabrication in contemporary architectural practice. His work spans all scales ranging from high-rise towers and mixed-used developments to temporary pavilions and bespoke furnishings. He received his M.Arch from the Architectural Association and his B.Arch from USC.

Esther Margulies, RLA, ASLA is a professor of practice, practicing Landscape Architect, City of Los Angeles planning commissioner and co-founder of the nonprofit LA River Arts. She currently serves as the USC School of Architecture Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Liaison, and as faculty advisor to the school’s National Organization of Minority Architects and ASLA student chapters. In academia, practice and research she is focused on developing equitable climate adaptation through nature based solutions. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University and her MLA degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

Kyle Konis, Ph.D., AIA is an Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Southern California and Director of the Chase L. Leavitt Graduate Building Science Program. Prof. Konis’researchcenterson improving the feedback loop between design intent and the performance of buildings in use, with an emphasis on the experience of building occupants. He seeks to develop novel performance metrics, participatory evaluation techniques, data-driven design support tools, and lessons learned from the study of existing buildings and their occupants.These outputs are produced with the goal of building a body of evidence to support innovative design practices that more closely align project performance with human needs and sustainability objectives.

TRUDI SANDMEIER

Trudi Sandmeier is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Director of Graduate Programs in Heritage Conservation and an Associate Professor of Practice in Architecture at the University of Southern California. She co-founded and currently serves as president of the non-profit Will Rogers Ranch Foundation, as a board member of the Docomomo Southern California chapter, the California Preservation Foundation, the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions, and the Historic Preservation Education Foundation. She co-organized the 2019 Preserving the Recent Past 3 conference and coedited the Routledge Companion to Global Heritage Conservation (2019). She is a cocreator and co-host of the podcast Save As: NextGen Heritage Conservation (www.saveas.place). Her work centers on the conservation of the recent past and efforts to make visible the impact of underrepresented constituencies on the historic built environment.

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS & STUDENT LEADERS

A+A Established in 2020 as a student-run project funded by USC Arts In Action, Architecture + Advocacy aims to bridge the gap between recent architectural development and South LA residents who experience injustice. They believe that by equipping everyday people with the tools of architecture, neighborhood development will better serve the needs of current residents.

AIAS

The AIAS organization serves as a resource arm for the students of USC at the School of Architecture.The American Institute of Architecture students is the national coalition of students and is based on campuses nationwide.This organization provides the support and resources for the integration of students with their professional counterparts through events planned by the board.

ASLA

USC ASLA is the USC student chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.The organization hosts a series of workshops and professional networking events throughout the year and encourages collaboration across disciplines.The student leaders are dedicated to fostering communication and advancing student development and opportunities within the School of Architecture and reaching our networks across the greater Los Angeles region. We hope to be a strong resource for students entering the program and are available to answer any questions on being new to the city and/or being an advocate for landscape architecture practice.

The Graduate Architecture Student Association is an organization comprised and representative of the USC School of Architecture graduate student body.The purpose of this organization is to explore and promote academic and career issues related to the field of architecture.We represent the concerns and needs of all of the graduate student body by providing interdisciplinary exchanges, and provide insight of special interests to its students. Our goal is also to help create memories and connections that will make your time here at USC memorable by working to improve all aspects of the graduate student experience.

SAWA-USC

The National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS) Chapter at the University of Southern California strives to enhance the USC Architecture community by promoting the cultural backgrounds and experiences of our minority students.We do this through events and activities that benefit all students and faculty members as well as the community that we live in.

The Student Association of Women Architects is dedicated to the advancement and support of women in the field of architecture. SAWA-USC encourages and fosters high levels of women’s achievement in design through conversation, networking, mentorship, scholarship, and more. SAWA-USC cultivates awareness of the value of equality in the workplace. SAWA-USC fosters an empowering environment for women and provides students the opportunity to learn from women faculty, alumni, and professionals practicing in the field of architecture.
