WELCOME

On behalf of USC President Carol L. Folt, the USC Alumni Association, and our colleagues across the university, we are delighted to welcome you to the 90th Annual USC Alumni Awards. Tonight, we pay tribute to eight outstanding Trojans—distinguished USC alumni whose achievements remind us once again that USC can provide individuals with a launchpad for their careers, for engaging with their communities, and for living lives filled with purpose and meaning.

Our 2024 USC Alumni Award honorees reflect a wide range of fields, including health, investment, journalism, hospitality, sports, philanthropy, and more. What they share is creativity, adaptability, resilience, passion, and an unwavering belief in the value of giving back, whether to their alma mater, community, or favorite cause. That’s just what Trojans do! The USC Alumni Awards are always inspirational, but tonight’s event is particularly special, as the USC Alumni Association celebrates its 100th anniversary. For a century, USC alumni— now more than 480,000 strong—have played a major role in creating the university of today by living in accordance with Trojan ideals—faithful, scholarly, skillful, courageous, and ambitious—in all their endeavors.

In that spirit, we also recognize tonight the profound difference that all of you—the loyal and committed members of our beloved Trojan Family—continue to make at USC by volunteering your time and energy, sharing your expertise, and contributing financially. Your generosity makes it possible for USC to continue to provide a world-class education to our students, as well as conduct research and programs that change lives.

We are deeply grateful for your legacy of service on behalf of USC and the USC Alumni Association.

Fight On!

CHARLES CALE |

Master of Laws, 1966

Charles Cale is a USC Life Trustee, a managing member of the investment company Griffin Opportunities, LLC, and a passionate supporter of the U.S. Olympic team who has held leadership positions on several Olympic committees. He served as the group vice president of sports for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee; that same year, the French government awarded him the Gold Medal of Youth and Sport. Cale went on to serve as the U.S. Olympic team’s assistant chef de mission (Seoul 1988) and director of delegation (Barcelona 1992). He also served as a special assistant and member of the U.S. Olympic Committee Board of Directors, and as the co-chairman and CEO of World Cup USA 1994.

Cale has long been a steadfast supporter of academic priorities across the university, as well as USC Athletics, where he and his wife, Jessie ’74, endowed the Charles Griffin Cale Director of Athletics’ Chair in 2011. Six years later, the couple made a gift to endow and name a USC Village residential college. Students living in Cale Residential College focus on global issues, ranging from the world’s refugee crisis to socio-political strife, with the goal of becoming global citizens committed to making a positive difference.

In 2016, Cale was elected to the USC Board of Trustees. A longtime member of the USC Associates, he previously served on the USC President’s Leadership Council, and is a founding board member of the Women of Troy, which champions gender equality and the principles of Title IX in USC Athletics.

A proud USC Gould School of Law alumnus, Cale practiced law in Los Angeles at Adams, Duque & Hazeltine and at the global law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP. In addition, he has served on the boards of NIKE Inc. and Century 21 Realty of Canada.

Jessie Cale is a USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism alumna. Their three children—Elizabeth ’08, Walter MBA ’12 and Whitney—all attended USC.

DIANA E. RAMOS |

Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts & Sciences, 1988 Doctor of Medicine, 1994

Diana Ramos is a renowned public health leader who made history in 2022, when she became California’s first Latina surgeon general. In this position, she serves as the key spokesperson on public health issues throughout the state and advises the governor on efforts to address health risks and challenges as effectively and early as possible.

An obstetrician gynecologist, Ramos has provided reproductive care to thousands of patients at Southern California Kaiser Permanente for decades. She credits her training at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, as well as her subsequent residency at the Los Angeles General Medical Center (formerly LAC+USC Medical Center), for inspiring her passionate approach to patient care.

Dedicated to improving health care quality and equity, Ramos previously served as the California Department of Public Health’s Assistant Deputy Director of chronic disease prevention, and as the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s director for reproductive health. Dr. Ramos was the former chair of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, California & Ecuador (IX) District; executive committee member of the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC); the secretary of the National Hispanic Medical Association Board of Directors; and co-chair of the Women’s Preventive Services Initiative Implementation Committee.

Ramos has written and contributed numerous articles to the obstetrics and gynecology and public health literature and has lectured—in Spanish and English—locally, nationally and internationally. In recognition of her achievements, the Orange County Medical Association named her its 2023 Physician of the Year.

Committed to giving back, Ramos has served as adjunct associate professor at the Keck School of Medicine of USC for many years. She is also a member of the school’s Salerni Collegium Alumni Association Board of Directors, and has mentored students across a wide range of academic disciplines.

A double USC alumna, Ramos received her undergraduate and medical degrees from the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and the Keck School of Medicine of USC, respectively.

RENATA SIMRIL

| Master of Real Estate Development, 1999

Renata Simril is the president and CEO of the LA84 Foundation, an organization that has transformed the lives of kids across Southern California for four decades through sports and play programs, as well as ongoing investments in infrastructure, research and education as a legacy of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Since her appointment in 2016, Simril has elevated the LA84 Foundation into a national leader in advocating for the role that sports plays in positive youth development. She has expanded the Foundation’s mission in vital ways, including creating a historic collaboration with 12 pro sports teams in Southern California with the foundation’s charitable partner, the Play Equity Fund.

Simril collaborated with the NFL Foundation and the Los Angeles Super Bowl Host Committee to develop the Super Bowl LVI Legacy Program, “Champions Live Here.” It provided funding for a mobile vehicle to bring healthy activities to communities lacking parks, as well as support for 56 nonprofit organizations.

In 2023, Simril worked closely with the Los Angeles College Football Playoff National Championship Host Committee and the College Football Playoff Foundation to launch “Champions Educate Here.” This program awarded up to $20,000 each to 46 educators using play to help students recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Previously, Simril worked at the Los Angeles Times as a senior vice president and chief of staff to the publisher. Prior to that, she served as the senior vice president of external affairs for the Los Angeles Dodgers, where she managed the team’s government and community relations, as well as its charitable foundation. As Deputy Mayor for Economic Development & Housing in the Hahn Administration, she worked to expand rental, affordable housing and economic policies. As Development Deputy to LA City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas, Simril helped steward over $5 billion to rebuild communities in South Los Angeles after the 1992 civil unrest.

In addition to her responsibilities for LA84, Simril is president of the Board of Commissioners of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. She was appointed to Governor Gavin Newsom’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Mental Well-Being, a statewide effort to enact policy and funding priorities to ensure the health of Californians of all ages.

Simril is a USC Sol Price School of Public Policy alumna.

JOHN TERZIAN | Bachelor of Arts in Communication, 2002

John Terzian is the co-founder and co-president of The h.wood Group, a Los Angeles-based hospitality and lifestyle marketing company with an iconic portfolio of luxury nightlife and restaurant venues. With eleven locations in Los Angeles (including the acclaimed restaurant and celebrity hotspot Delilah), three across the country and six new ones on the horizon, The h.wood Group is rapidly expanding, thanks to its multi-concept portfolio uniquely positioned for different markets.

Co-founded by Terzian and fellow USC alumnus Brian Toll ’02 in 2008, The h.wood Group was born of their desire to bring their high-end, thoughtful concepts and passion for service to life. As the creative arm of the company, Terzian brings his experience, networks and vision to all of their venues. He’s responsible for the creative development and concept design of each project, as well as for the company’s strategic, collaborative partnerships. Also, due in great part to his leadership, The h.wood Group has established itself as one of the world’s most in-demand event producers, with such eminent clients as Art Basel, the Cannes Film Festival, Coachella and Formula One.

An active philanthropist, Terzian serves on the board of Imagine LA, the nonprofit mentorship program for the unhoused, as well as on the Children’s Hospital Sports & Entertainment Board. For years, The h.wood Group has participated in the annual “Make March Matter” campaign of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, which unites businesses and community members in support of children’s health.

RACHEL SCOTT

| Bachelor of Arts, Broadcast and Digital Journalism, 2015

Rachel Scott is the senior congressional correspondent for ABC News, reporting from Capitol Hill across all programs and platforms, including Good Morning America, World News Tonight with David Muir, Nightline, This Week with George Stephanopoulos, 20/20, ABC News Live, ABC News Digital and ABC Audio.

Scott’s first day covering Capitol Hill was Jan. 6, 2021. From the moment rioters stormed the Capitol, Scott provided extensive live reports as the insurrection unfolded. In the following weeks, she led the network’s coverage of the historic second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump. She has also been front and center covering several major stories, including the passage of the first major gun safety legislation in decades.

Scott also covers stories outside of Washington, D.C. In 2021, when Texas enacted the most restrictive abortion law in the nation, she traveled there for Nightline to document the extraordinary lengths a young woman took to obtain an abortion. Her report, “The Appointment,” earned a Peabody Award.

Prior to covering Capitol Hill, Scott was a White House, then Washington, D.C., correspondent. In 2020, she provided extensive, on-the-ground coverage of the nationwide protests over police brutality and the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on communities of color. That same year, she traveled thousands of miles on the presidential campaign trail to cover both the Democratic Party primary and the Trump campaign.

In addition to the Peabody, Scott has received two Edward R. Murrow Awards. In 2020, the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) named her Emerging Journalist of the Year, and Forbes selected her for its “30 Under 30” list. Two years later, Scott received the first-ever Emerging Journalist Emmy Award.

Scott is a USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism alumna.

YOUNG ALUMNI MERIT AWARD

PAULA CIARAMITARO |

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, 1985

Paula Ciaramitaro is a “Trojan’s Trojan” who gives generously of her time and energy to USC. A longtime member of the Trojan League of South Bay and Town & Gown of USC, she has held various leadership positions in both groups, including terms as president and CFO. She also served on the USC Alumni Association Board of Governors for six years, including a four-year stint on the board’s Executive Committee. She currently volunteers for USC Associates, the university’s premier academic giving society, as a member of the board of directors and co-chair of events.

In addition, Ciaramitaro co-chaired the 2012 USC Women’s Conference Host Committee and the 2014 USC Alumni Awards Dinner Committee. She also served on the Class of 1985 30th Reunion Committee and has organized two USC Alumni Day of SCervice projects. In 2015, she received a USC Alumni Association President’s Award in recognition of her service.

Ciaramitaro also volunteers as a student mentor and event host. She and her husband, Joe, have held SCuppers, (alumni-led student dinners), game watch parties and more in the South Bay, and have even hosted breakfasts for the entire USC women’s rowing team.

A Southern California native, Ciaramitaro launched her first business, M.A.P. TRAVEL, INC., as a USC Marshall School of Business freshman. By the time she graduated, her corporate travel agency had two offices and a staff of 33 agents. After selling the company in 1997, Ciaramitaro became the controller at J & D’s Seafoods, Inc.

The Ciaramitaros are the proud parents of two USC grads—Chanelle ’10 and Crystal ’16.

ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD

JOHN COLICH | Bachelor of Science, Business Administration, 1971

JANINE BOSKOVICH COLICH | Bachelor of Arts, Education, 1978

John and Janine Colich are passionate supporters of USC Athletics who have made an indelible impact on several of the department’s programs, most notably USC Track & Field. This program holds special meaning to John, who competed as a shot putter for USC from 1967 to 1971.

In 2019, they provided the lead gift for the Colich Track and Field Center, which opened in 2021. This stateof-the-art facility not only serves as a hub for training and competition, but also preserves the rich heritage of USC Athletics through its Hall of Fame exhibit, honoring such Trojan Olympic icons as Louis Zamperini, Parry O’Brien, Bob Seagren and Quincy Watts.

More recently, the couple provided funding for the Colich Throwing Center, a world-class training center for USC discus, hammer and shot-put throwers, as well as local youth, at the South Bay Athletic Club in the Wilmington section of Los Angeles.

The Colich Track and Field Center is one of several projects John and Janine have undertaken to improve the university’s athletic facilities. In 1966, John’s father, Don—who trained but never competed as a thrower at USC—built the first weight room on the USC campus (nicknamed “The Dungeon”) in the basement of the physical education building. The Colichs later built a new and enhanced version of “The Dungeon” in USC’s Marks Tennis Stadium. In recognition of their generous support, John and Janine received the USC Track and Field Heritage Award in 2017. In 2020 they received the Legend of Troy award.

In addition to supporting other USC Athletics programs, ranging from men’s and women’s basketball to women’s rowing, the Colichs are Chairman-level members of the USC Associates, the university’s premier academic giving society. Their other university memberships include the USC Widney Society, which honors $1 million+ benefactors, and the USC Scholarship Club for Athletics. The Colichs are most proud of their legacy of mentoring student-athletes, especially those from Eastern Europe.

Janine is a longtime member of the Trojan League of Los Angeles, a philanthropic USC women’s group, and the USC Caruso Catholic Center’s Newman Guild.

Hailing from a long line of Trojans, the Colichs are the proud parents of four children: Donilo, Nicole and Trojans John Michael MBA, MRED ’16 and Tessa ’04.

CELEBRATING OUR CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY

ASA V. CALL ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

THE HISTORY

April 27, 1932 — In a letter to the Board of the Directors of the USC Alumni Association, Mr. Asa V. Call writes, “Confirming a proposal which was made some time ago, and which I understand meets with your approval, I am willing at this time to give to the Alumni Association a silver trophy to be awarded each year at or about Commencement, to the alumnus of our University who, by reason of his accomplishments in some field of endeavor, during the preceding year, reflects the greatest credit to our University… The Trophy will, of course, remain in the permanent possession of the University, and the name of the donee of the award will each year be engraved thereon. At the time of the presentation this person will be given for his permanent possession a smaller silver replica of the original trophy.”

PAST RECIPIENTS

May 1932 — In a column in the Alumni Review, Mr. Call noted: “There will be no General Alumni banquet this year. The dedication of the Alumni Gate or Pylon, which is to be held just before commencement exercises June fourth, 1932, will take its place. At the same ceremony the first annual award of the new Alumni Cup will be made to the alumnus of the university who has, by reason of his accomplishments during the preceding year, brought the greatest credit to our university.”

April 6, 1933 — Lewis Gough, Executive Secretary of the GAA, named the award the “Asa V. Call Alumni Achievement Trophy” in recognition of Mr. Call’s donation of the silver trophy and inspiring the award itself.
