M’LIS WARD ’86
Trailblazing Pilot and Flight Instructor Since graduating from the USC Marshall School of Business, M’Lis Ward has achieved two historic firsts: becoming the first Black woman to serve as a U.S. Air Force flight instructor and the first Black woman to captain a commercial airline. Yet when the Chicago native enrolled at USC with an Air Force ROTC scholarship, she originally planned to become an accountant. That all changed during Ward’s sophomore year, when she took an orientation ride in a Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star jet. After earning her Bachelor of Arts in business administration, Ward trained to become a pilot at Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, Texas and became the first Black woman to receive a fighter pilot rating as the only woman in her class. She then spent the next four
USC BAA SCHOLARSHIP BENEFIT 2026
years training male students to operate the two-seat, 5,000-pound T-37 jet, as women were still barred from flying fighter jets and bombers. In 1992, Ward moved from active to reserve duty and joined United Airlines, where she was assigned as second officer on the DC-10. Six years later, she was promoted to captain and flew a Boeing 737-300 for 11 years, holding the elite positions of standards captain and fleet technical captain. Ward is currently a captain and the only Black woman serving as an evaluator on the Airbus A-319, A-320 and A-321 aircraft. When she’s not flying, she coaches high school basketball; a gifted athlete, she was a reserve forward on USC’s 1983 and 1984 women’s NCAA championship basketball teams and is also an eight-time Club Champion in her weekly golf leagues. Over the years, Ward’s groundbreaking achievements have been chronicled in such publications as Ebony, Essence and In the Black. In 2010, she received the USC Alumni Association’s Alumni Merit Award. Ward lives in Denver with her wife, Denise Garcia, and their twin daughters, Analise and Isabel.

JUJU WATKINS CLASS OF 2027
USC Women’s Basketball Player
Judea Skies “JuJu” Watkins is the definition of a phenom — a USC women’s basketball superstar whose dominance on the court has energized the game. Now in her senior year at USC, the 6-foot-2 guard has made good on the promise she first displayed as a child prodigy at age 7.
In 2023, ESPN ranked Watkins the No. 1 recruit in her class. She committed to USC and made an immediate impact, setting a USC record for points scored in a freshman debut. Watkins went on to earn first-team AllAmerican accolades from the Associated Press and the United States Basketball Association. In addition, she received the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award as the nation’s top shooting guard, among other honors.
Born and raised in Watts, Watkins established herself as a talent to watch in high school, playing for Windward School and Sierra Canyon High School. In her freshman year at Windward, she averaged 21 points and nine rebounds per game. After transferring to Sierra Canyon her junior year, Watkins led the team to an Open Division state title. She capped her senior year with a spectacular 88-39 win over Notre Dame High School. In recognition of her extraordinary record, Watkins received several honors, including the Naismith Prep Player of the Year award.
Watkins’ sophomore season was equally impressive. On Nov. 15, 2024, she became the USC player to reach 1,000 career points fastest, in just 38 games. Later that season, she helped the Trojans defeat the Bruins to win the regular-season Big Ten championship.
USC BAA SCHOLARSHIP BENEFIT 2026
Although an ACL injury sidelined Watkins during the 2025-26 season, she is returning to play this fall. Watkins is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in communications from the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.
