Reverend Dr. Thomas Kilgore, Jr. Founded in 1976 by Reverend Dr. Thomas Kilgore, Jr., the USC Black Alumni Association (BAA) is a leadership network established to strengthen the legacy of educational attainment and excellence of USC’s Black students. The BAA provides scholarship assistance, career mentoring and cultural advocacy through alumni networking, volunteer involvement, philanthropy and social enterprise.

WELCOME FROM THE BAA Dear Trojan Family and Friends, On behalf of the USC Black Alumni Advisory Council and our Gala Committee we welcome you to the 46th Annual USC Black Alumni Association (BAA) Scholarship Benefit!

In 1976, a group of concerned alumni and community leaders met to discuss the needs of minority students on the campus of the University of Southern California. The trailblazing civil rights organizer, Reverend Dr. Thomas Kilgore, Jr., led the group, which also included Dr. and Mrs. Peter Dauterive and Reverend and Mrs. Thomas Griffith. They would later change the landscape of Los Angeles with their noteworthy contributions to leadership, social justice, and education. They intended to uplift students through financial contributions for tuition assistance, setting the stage for what would resonate in campus history as the first scholarships for minority students at USC.

Today, the BAA has awarded over $5 million to support more than 4000 undergraduate and graduate students. This achievement would not have been possible without the full support of the alumni body, our Trojan friends, and corporate partners.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES

Marc A. Brown Co-anchor, ABC7 Marc Brown is the co-anchor for ABC7 Eyewitness News at 5pm and 11pm.

Marc was born in Los Angeles, where he attended Narbonne High School. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Southern California, where he majored in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science.

Marc’s first on-air job was in 1984 at KIEM-TV in Eureka, California. He went on to work as a reporter and anchor at KOLO-TV in Reno, Nevada, KNTV in San Jose, California and KFMB-TV in San Diego, California.

Marc joined ABC7 in 1989 and first specialized in live reporting for the 4pm, 5pm, 6pm, and 11pm newscasts. He also served for a time as the weekend anchor.

Marc has won six Emmys, a Golden Mike, an Associated Press award and a Radio and Television News Directors Association award for excellence in TV News reporting.

Marc is active in the community as a speaker at schools and as a Master of Ceremonies for community events.

Danny Bakewell, Jr. Danny J. Bakewell, Jr. leads the real estate development and management division of The Bakewell Company, one of the nations largest and most successful privately held African American real estate development companies. The Bakewell Family has built, owns and managed over 4,000,000 sq. ft. of commercial, office, industrial and residential real estate throughout California. Danny, Jr. also serves as Executive Editor and Chief of Staff of Bakewell Media, owners of The Los Angeles Sentinel, The LA Watts Times and previously owned WBOK Radio in New Orleans, Louisiana. Bakewell Media also annually presents Taste of Soul the largest free street festival in California, bringing over 350,000 people annually onto the historic Crenshaw Blvd.

Mr. Bakewell, Jr. is a licensed general contractor in the States of California and oversees the day-to-day operations of Bakewell Development, Bakewell Construction, Bakewell Construction Management and Bakewell Media.

For several years Mr. Bakewell, Jr. worked on the Monterey Peninsula in Seaside, California overseeing the development of 380 single family homes on the Old Fort Ord Army Base.

This master planned development included land planning construction and sales of a singlefamily master planned community, an affordable housing development for the Salvation Army (Casa Las Palmas) and a new 4000 sq. ft. community facility and a state of the art park and recreational facility.

Mr. Bakewell, Jr. has also built projects for such national retailers as: Albertsons Grocery Company, Ralph’s Grocery Company, Safeway/Von’s Grocery Company, Food4Less Grocers, Lucky/SavOn’s, Pizza Hut, Hollywood Video, International House of Pancakes, McDonalds Corporation, Superior Super Warehouse, Rite Aid Drug Stores, Starbucks Coffee, FootAction, Inglewood Unified School District and The State of California, Community Colleges as well as several other major developers and retailers throughout Southern California.

Mr. Bakewell, Jr. is a graduate of University of Southern California (USC) Real Estate Development and Finance Program and is a member of the USC Black Alumni Association Advisory Board. (cont.)

Mr. Bakewell, Jr. has been recognized and received several awards and commendations from several cities for his commitment to using local residents as well as minority and women owned businesses in the building of his projects and has been recognized by The Association of Minority Contractors as The Developer of the Year.

Danny, Jr. also serves as the Executive Editor and Chief of Staff of The Los Angeles Sentinel, the largest African American owned and operated newspaper west of the Mississippi and The Los Angeles Watts Times. The Sentinel and The Watts Times each have a circulation base of over 250,000 weekly readers as well as a major web and social media presence. In addition to these media brands, Bakewell Media also owns and operates the largest street festival in the country “The Taste of Soul” which features the largest showcase of African American Businesses in the state along the historic Crenshaw Blvd. With over 3,000,000 people in attendance over the past 15 years The Bakewell Family is doing in the media business what they have already done in the real estate development business—all with the same energy and commitment of operating a successful business while “Doing Good & Doing Well” at the same time.

Danny, Jr. is a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (Pasadena Alumni Chapter) and previously served as the Western Province Chair of the fraternity’s Political Action Committee.

He currently serves on the USC DPS Community Action Board. He is a Life Member of the NAACP and serves as a Board Member of the Los Angeles Brotherhood Crusade and The Los Angeles Press Club.

Mr. Bakewell, Jr. is the father of four wonderful children, Taelor (28), Danny III (26), Devyn and Bryce (23yr old twin daughters).

USC BLACK ALUMNI ASSOCIATION KILGORE SERVICE AWARD

Wilma Pinder ’62 Wilma Williams Pinder first visited the University of Southern California (USC) campus as a high school senior. She was presented as a Stovall Debutante and the Cotillion was held in the venerable Town and Gown Ballroom.

Initially matriculating at Pepperdine University, she transferred to USC. In a Psychology class she met a studious young man, Frank Pinder; they became sweethearts. Active on campus, Wilma served as Upsilon Chapter president of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Both Trojans continued on to graduate school at Howard University. They married and diligently sought their milestones: Wilma earned a Master of Science in Psychology; Frank earned a Medical degree, followed by an Internship & Residency at LAC-USC Medical Center. They parented two children born during graduate school and a third, born shortly thereafter.

In 1973, Wilma entered UCLA School of Law (SOL) earning a Juris Doctorate in 1976. As an attorney for 30 years at the Office of the Los Angeles City Attorney, she became a consummate civil trial lawyer. She engaged with local, state and national law organizations. Post-retirement she was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Langston Bar and the National Bar Associations.

Currently she is a LA County Commissioner serving the 2nd District.

Since her 50th Class Reunion in 2012, Wilma has been active on the Boards of Half Century Trojans, Town and Gown and Trojan League; she is a member of Trojan Guild and supports the Black Alumni Association (BAA). On three occasions, she traveled with the BAA to Cuba, Paris and on a cruise to European Ports. In 2017, she traveled to Tokyo with Dornsife’s East Asia Studies Center and with Trojan Travels she toured the Middle East. A world traveler, Wilma has visited 50 countries.

At UCLA, currently she serves on the Hospital’s Medical Ethics Committee which addresses critical patient care issues. The Ralph Bunche Center, University Foundation, Gold Shield and Women and Philanthropy are other affiliations.

Wilma is very grateful for her dear family: Frank E. Pinder, M. D., adult-children Teague Pinder, Jessalyn Pinder, Esq., Tiffany Pinder Patierno, son-in-law Paul Patierno, granddaughters Alexandra and Samantha Patierno, Ashley Pinder-Biggs and sister Charlee Williams.

Lloyd T. McKinney, Jr. ’80 Lloyd McKinney is Sr. Global Supply Chain Manager for Procurement and Material Pricing for the Communications Center of Excellence, Networked Information Solutions (NIS) Division, and Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Sector.

McKinney has more than 30 years of experience within the Aerospace and Defense Industry, executing a broad set of programs and functions. He is a veteran in Domestic and International Global Supply Chain management and is a multidimensional leader with a proven track record in leading high-performance teams. Skills include special projects management, proposal planning and preparation and project planning and control.

Career highlights include Global Supply Chain Leadership for the X-47B Program where he developed acquisition strategies and proactively managed surveillance over subcontractor affordability, risk/opportunity management, quality, cost, and schedule performance. X-47B achievements include: 1) Ambassador team for receipt of the programs Robert J. Collier Trophy Award administered by the U.S. National Aeronautic Association and 2) an Aerospace Systems President’s Award for Program Excellence.

Corporate Citizenship and Community activities include: Northrop Grumman One AATG Employee Resource Group (ERG), Enterprise Co-Chair; the University of Southern California (USC); Board of Governors Emeritus; Founding Member of the USC Black Alumni Association Advisory Council; Board Chair - Wilson Global Consulting based in Washington, D.C.; New Designs Charter Management Organization Board of Directors; Executive Leadership Team Beta Psi Lambda Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Asian Culture and Media Alliance (ACMA) Advisory Board; California State University San Marcos - Operations and Supply Chain Management Advisory Board. McKinney’s additional interests include travel, competitive billiards, cycling, theatre, music, golf, and tennis.

McKinney is a graduate of the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business, BS; Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management, Claremont Graduate University, MBA; and Executive and Leadership Programs at the University of California at Los Angeles Anderson Graduate School of Business and Management.

Diamonté “Saweetie” Harper ’16 Flaunting nineties rhyme reverence, fashion-forward fire, and endless charisma, Saweetie—born Diamonté Harper—can go bar-for-bar with the best of ‘em, and fans and critics immediately recognized and responded to that. Within six months, she cracked 100 million cumulative streams, garnered a gold plaque, and earned the praise of Billboard, The FADER, and Noisey as Los Angeles Times pegged her as “one to watch.”

Drawing on a passion for poetry and numerous years of rapping in the car, she turned her love for words into vivid verses during 2018 on the High Maintenance EP with her smash hit “ICY GRL’’ earning an RIAA platinum certification. 2019 saw the release of Saweetie’s ICY EP, spawning double-platinum viral sensation “My Type” as well as a 2020 BET Awards nomination for “Best Female Hip Hop Artist.”

As a businesswoman, she launched her sold-out ICY jewelry line and partnered with Pretty Little Thing for a 50-piece capsule collection. Meanwhile, everyone from Gwen Stefani to David Guetta, Dua Lipa to Wiz Khalifa, and Mulatto to G-Eazy has enlisted her for guest spots. Saweetie dominates the charts and commands social media with more than 10 million Instagram followers, a 2022 Game Changer Billboard Award, and brand partnerships with Quay, Revlon, and more. A true fashionista, she has graced the cover of Cosmopolitan, Maxim, Elite Daily, and Wonderland, in addition to appearing in C.R. Fashion Book, Variety, Interview, Fast Company, Vogue, and Harper’s Bazaar.

Jaya Hinton, Class of 2022 Jaya Hinton is a fourth-year Business Administration Student in the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California (USC). Ms. Hinton is a Mork Family Scholar, a full-tuition merit scholarship awarded to the top ten entering freshman students each year. Beyond academic prowess, Ms. Hinton has demonstrated strategic planning, leadership, organizational development, and communications experience in both French and English.

Jaya has been active in student government during her time at USC, beginning as her residential college’s community council president her Freshman year, then spending two years as a Co-Executive Director of the Black Student Assembly. She also assisted in the selection of USC’s inaugural Chief Inclusion and Diversity Officer as a member of the Search Committee and helped implement bias education training for students, faculty, and DPS after the racial incidents in the summer of 2020.

Jaya’s first internship was through the USC Career Center’s Global Fellows Program, where she spent the summer in Taipei, Taiwan interning for a digital marketing firm. She has spent every summer since interning for KPMG and spent her senior year helping recruit as a member of the University Talent Acquisition Team. She will start with KPMG full time this July in Los Angeles as an advisory associate in their transformation delivery, project management service line.

Kenny Lattimore With a career spanning over two decades, highlighted by his 1996 breakthrough single “Never Too Busy” and the wedding staple “For You,” Kenny has garnered Grammy and Soul Train Award nominations, Top 10 singles, Top 20 R&B albums and an NAACP Image Award for Best New Artist, while staying sincere about giving his heart and soul to communities through music.

The Washington DC native dazzles audiences with an unprecedented range influenced by his classical, jazz, and gospel upbringing. Kenny is famous for delivering just the right dose of classic crooning, exceptional runs and authentic emotion. He has placed a distinctive stamp on classic songs recorded by musical icons as Donny Hathaway and The Beatles, transformed Christmas standards, and created musical magic on iconic movie soundtracks like Love Jones, Best Man and Disney’s Lion King II Simba’s Pride.

Kenny Lattimore’s recording legacy includes the critically acclaimed albums, “From the Soul of Man,” “Timeless” and “Anatomy of a Love Song,” which produced the Top 10 single “Love Me Back.” While “A Kenny Lattimore Christmas” earned a Stellar Award nomination for ‘Event CD of the Year,’ Lattimore’s ninth solo studio album “Vulnerable” produced another Top 10 hit, “Stay on Your Mind.” His latest hit single “Pressure”, released under a new partnership with his label SincereSoul Records and SRG/ILS is currently climbing the charts.

Kenny is a humanitarian who uses his life and platform as a tool to inspire others to pursue excellence and elevate positive conversation about art, culture, family and faith.
