ANNUAL REPORT-FY23

WE ARE USASA. The United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association (USASA) is a non-profit organization 501(c)(3) represented by 32 regional series across the United States. We develop, nurture, and support the next generation of snowboarders and freeskiers by creating the opportunity for education, personal development, and creative expression on the hill, and in life.

Through our community of series directors, clubs, volunteers, and resort partners, USASA hosts 500+ snowboard and freeski competitions each winter season.

These regional events culminate at The USASA National Championships. Our premier event celebrates sport and community, with more than 1800 top athletes gathering from around the country to compete, share, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Facilitate professionally managed events for athletes of all ages, attract snowboarders and freeskiers, support and nurture their development, provide member and coaching education, and positively influence the future of our sports.

Create positive environments that develop athletes while embracing the community and culture of our sports.

OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND

The 2022-23 competition season brought with it new challenges in weather patterns and an unprecedented number of canceled events, particularly in the Sierras. At the same time, the postpandemic growth of our membership, while providing a welcome influx of new families and athletes, put increased demand on our registration and competition infrastructure.

During the pandemic, USASA was faced with a seemingly insurmountable challenge. Our largest gathering and a major contributor to our revenue stream was put on pause. For two years, the National Championships were on hold, and along with our membership, we felt the void that was left.

We didn't panic. We adapted and evolved. USASA leaned in, decided to thrive in the face of adversity, and we came out swinging. We used the time to create new customer enhancements for the event including jumbotron viewing and an expanded nightly Rail Jam experience. Families near and far could now tune in with live broadcasts and daily streams. USASA elevated and delivered back-to-back years of the two largest National Championships in the history of our sports!

Looking ahead with a steady increase in membership growth across the country, and continued investments from our donors and partners, we are in a key position to capture this moment. As a community, we have always met each challenge head-on and even expanded under the pressure of our environments. As we close the year and look forward to the next, we are excited for the opportunities ahead.

Encouraging creativity and fostering a culture of continuous learning, while cultivating relationships with partners and customers, takes persistence and dedication. We have new demands in technology infrastructure and a growing membership base that needs our support. We are focused on planning for our future and this fall will unveil a new five year strategic plan. We are grateful for the commitment of our regional directors and families and are looking ahead to the coming winter.

CELEBRATING OUR COMMUNITY

Founded by Chuck Allen in 1988 with a $500 donation from Transworld SNOWboarding magazine USASA was born from a desire to serve and support snowboarding events. Over the last 35 years, USASA has been able to dramatically influence the landscape of the snowsports community and has transformed into a worldwide movement for the future of snowboarding and freeskiing.

The USASA network of directors, officials, and judges work alongside athletes, parents, and coaches with support from resort and corporate partners towards a common goal: to enhance the lives of our snowboarding and freeskiing families.

With healthy competition as a foundation, we develop the next generation of snowboarders and freeskiers by creating opportunities for personal development and creative expression on the hill.

Each regional series develops partnerships with resort and club partners to collaborate, engage, and breathe life into our shared mission. As stewards of the culture, we know that while competition is fun, winning isn’t everything and that through the journey of competition - grit, compassion, and community are built. We believe that the lifelong friendships fostered over pow slashes, park laps, and healthy competition are some of the best moments and will last lifetimes.

As we look ahead, we want to take a moment to share our gratitude to each Series Director, past, present, and future. Your commitment in the early mornings and late evenings, through bitter cold and rain and snow, is much appreciated.

HOW WE'VE MADE AN IMPACT THIS YEAR Fostering Excellence: The Power of Donor Support in Empowering Athletes and Communities Thanks to donor contributions, the USASA has provided resources to our athletes and regional series, allowing them to thrive on and off the snow. But the impact of your support extends far beyond the athletes themselves. Our regional events provide a training ground for future stars and create an environment for families to connect through their love of sport. Families can get outside, and kids can make friends, have fun, learn teamwork, have good sportsmanship, and improve self-esteem.

As we continue to grow and expand our reach, we remain committed to providing invaluable support and fostering a culture of excellence in sports and community building.

HOW WE'VE MADE AN IMPACT THIS YEAR Equipment Grant Program USASA Appalachian Series Recipient Thanks to our generous donors and the USASA Equipment Grant Program, a new MacBook was sent to our series last season to keep up with event registrations, run our events efficiently, and stay on top of all the social media postings.

As for the outside venue, we received a new USASAbranded tent and fencing. My partner "Target" runs a great on-hill experience for athletes. The tent protects the athletes in inclement weather, and the fencing provides a safe staging area for our athletes.

Coaches Education USASA, in collaboration with US Ski & Snowboard, has transformed the coach education program in the US. Combined we have invested over 150k to develop a modern, robust online education program. Coaches can now engage in a distance learning module at their own pace and then are assessed in person. USASA has pioneered the movement to have every coach on hill validated in person, and since its inception 18 years ago can attest to 100% compliance.

8 and under Free Memberships

HOW WE'VE MADE AN IMPACT THIS YEAR Free and Reduced Membership Support USASA believes in the power of getting youth involved in snowboarding and freeskiing early. So much so that we’re continuing to break down the financial barriers to entry for our youngest members.

USASA is proud to offer free memberships to our athletes 8 & under and reduced memberships through fundraising support for our nine and ten-year-olds to keep this sport as inclusive and accessible as possible.

Reduced membership support is also available for our US Active Military and Veterans, and college students.

National Championships Grant Grant Recipient, Johnny Bsullak "I have been skiing for three years and competed for the first time for Maine Mountain Series USASA winter 2022-23. This grant made it possible to go compete at USASA Nationals 2023 as it is a great cost to go out west for a week. I have always wanted to ski out west and this made that possible."

HOW WE'VE MADE AN IMPACT THIS YEAR Layla's Story Written by Katie Welch

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words – it might be a cliche but for this story, it remains true. Here is Layla, 12 years old, competing at this year at USASA’s National Championship. There she is, beaming with pride, bringing home the hardware, winning in her discipline, all at the size of a 2-year-old.

Yes, you read that right, Layla is only 3 ft tall, and yet still an incredible athlete and competitor.

This was Layla's 1st National Championship. Not because she wasn’t invited, but her first invites were in 2020 and 2021 (no need to explain that!) and then in 2022 she shattered her femur at a competition. This stopped her season in its tracks.

That winter instead of wearing the hardware around her neck, it was being put in her leg. She had two surgeries (one where NICU equipment was rushed in for her small bones), was confined to a wheelchair and missed out on Nationals. To say it was devastating would be an understatement. To say it also added a financial hardship on our family would be another.

Competing with athletes across the country was inspiring, I’m more determined than ever to be a Paralympian.

Fast forward to 2023 and she had a breakout year. She regained all her mobility after spending an entire summer and fall re-learning to walk. She won her races, receiving invites for skill-based coaching/training sessions, practicing more than four times per week. All the core values of an incredible USASA athlete. And because of her tenacity she not only earned her invite, but we were going no matter what.

And Layla knew this.

What Layla didn’t know is that her medical needs are very expensive. There were large out of pocket costs – but she demonstrated so much grit, determination, and passion we had to find a way. That’s where USASA stepped in.

USASA provided grant support for Layla at the 2023 National Championship. That grant ensured our family had the ability to not only get her there, but breathe just a bit easier between her medical expenses and her passion expenses.

While at Nationals Layla had the experience of a lifetime. She not only took home the gold in Women’s Para Slalom, Giant Slalom and Halfpipe – USASA Development arranged a surprise for her! She got to meet and be coached by a very special USASA Alumni, Olympian, and X Games medalist, Louie Vito! None of this would have been possible without USASA and the support provided both on the hill and financially. That week at Copper Mountain was a dream come true.

HOW WE'VE MADE AN IMPACT THIS YEAR USSRT USASA Athlete Support Funding Written by Lexli Bullis, USSRT / World Cup athlete

"Support from USASA means that US Snowboard racing athletes no longer have to worry about where their next meal and plane ticket are coming from. Over the last 10-12 years, so much talent in the snowboard racing discipline has been lost because athletes couldn't afford to continue the sport."

"With USASA support, our athletes could focus less on the logistics of travel, lodging, and expenses that come with it and instead focus more energy on nutrition, training, and recovery.

Currently, US snowboard racers are spread across the country and the world, training with whomever they can afford and whatever coaches/teams they can find. We are on separate teams, training with different athletes, and are only a team when we meet at a race. While we do our best to be a team, it becomes challenging when this is our only option.
