30 Rhythmic World Championships

Julie Zetlin became the first U.S. woman since Mary Sanders in 2003 to advance to the all-around finals at the 2010 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, held in Moscow. In addition, the U.S. rhythmic group qualified for the 2011 World Championships, the next step for them toward Olympic qualification.

32 Dooley, Gluckstein Win World Cup Series Syncho Title

Logan Dooley and Steven Gluckstein won the FIG’s World Cup Series title for synchronized trampoline, a first for the United States. They took top honors for the seven-event series based on their two gold and one silver medal finishes.

The U.S. women also continued their streak of winning a team medal at every World Championships and Olympic Games since 2000. It was a close race between the USA and Russia, but Russia just edged out the USA by 0.201 points to win the gold. The four medals for Bross and Sacramone’s gold on vault were definite highlights.

The U.S. men fell just short of a team medal, finishing fourth. We were all pleased for Horton and his individual all-around bronze, the USA’s first men’s world all-around medal since Paul Hamm’s win in 2003.

Proceeds from the Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup benefit the Nastia Liukin Fund, a charitable fund within the National Gymnastics Foundation.

Two Level 10/Open gymnasts from each of the 18 invitationals will earn the right to advance to the Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup and compete on the same podium as the athletes in the AT&T American Cup. 2008 Olympic All-Around Champion Nastia Liukin will be on hand in Jacksonville to interact with the competitors, conduct hospitality events, and make the Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup an unforgettable experience. Gymnasts who compete in the Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup will receive a Nastia Liukin-designed leotard and a warm-up from GK Elite; two tickets to the AT&T American Cup and recognition during the event; and the opportunity to meet Liukin and participate in a team photo.

We are also excited to host another competitive opportunity for JO women with the USA Gymnastics Open Championships for Levels 4-8 and prep-op. This inaugural event will take place June 2-5 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The competition will feature both individual and club team champions at each level, as well as crown an overall 2011 Club Team Champion. A National Elite Qualifier will also be held in conjunction with this event. This approach allows us to expand the recognition of winning a national title deeper into the grassroots levels.

T

he U.S. women continued their streak of winning a team medal at every World Championships and Olympic Games since 2000, by winning the silver, finishing just 0.201 points behind Russia.

Rebecca Bross won the all-around bronze plus the beam silver and bronze on bars. Alicia Sacramone won the gold medal on vault.

The fight for the team title came down to the last rotation. The USA finished up on vault, performing three well-executed vaults: Mackenzie Caquatto and Alexandra Raisman both competed a Yurchenko doublefull, and Sacramone competed her powerful front handspring layout Rudi.

The Russians and Chinese concluded with the floor. When the chalk had settled, the Russians had edged out the USA, 175.397 to 175.196. China was third at 174.781.

“This was a very dramatic competition,” said Martha Karolyi, the women’s national team coordinator.

“I think the girls did a good job. They were not quite as solid on the beam as they were the other day, but they stayed on. We hit bars and the vault was excellent so I feel good except we had a mistake on floor and we could not make up for that.”

Sacramone, who is competing in her fourth World Championships, said, “The silver feels good. Obviously we wanted gold – we always do – but the girls did a really good job. We had

a little mistake here and there but I was happy we pulled it together. “ The U.S. women’s team scores for each apparatus were: bars – 44.065; beam – 43.799; floor– 41.666; and vault – 45.666.

On bars, Caquatto had three release moves along with a full twisting double back dismount. Sloan had nice lower in-bar/stalder work and dismounted with a double layout.

Bross also had great in-bar work, finishing with a full twisting double back dismount.

On beam, Raisman did a solid Arabian double-front dismount.

Sacramone performed a front pike mount and a back-handspring series into double-pike dismount. Bross’ routine included a standing Arabian and a double Arabian dismount.

On floor, Bross showed a layout punch double front on her first pass and ended with a two-and-a-half punch front full. Raisman had a unique first pass which included a one-and-a-half step-out to double Arabian immediate split jump. Larson had some challenges in her routine, but showed a nice double layout on her first pass and triple full on her second pass.

Also of note, during team prelims, Bross and Raisman finished second and third in the all-around, and Caquatto and Larson were in ninth and 11th place.

In the all-around finals, Bross won the bronze medal and said, “I am very

And, you always want to go without the mistakes.”

Russia’s Aliya Mustafina won the gold medal with a total score of 61.032. China’s Jiang Yuyan was second at 59.998, and Bross was third at 58.966. Raisman posted a 55.699 to finish 13th.

Raisman and Bross each performed a Yurchenko double full on vault. On bars, Bross delivered a clean routine with a stuck tucked half-in, half-out dismount. Raisman had a fall on bars, but finished with a solid double-front dismount. On beam, Raisman hit a nice set with a back handspring layout and Arabian double front dismount. Bross fell on a standing Arabian but finished with an Arabian double dismount. Both Bross and Raisman hit nice floor routines.

During event finals, Sacramone won the world vault title, becoming just the second U.S. woman to do so. She now has one gold, one silver and two bronze world vault medals.

Sacramone’s career world medal total is now nine, tying Shannon Miller and Nastia Liukin as the U.S. women with the most career world medals.

On bars, Bross earned the bronze medal, while Sloan was fourth. Both gymnasts hit solid routines and stuck their dismounts. On beam, Bross hit a nice routine and tied for the silver medal with China’s Deng Linlin, while Sacramone also hit a solid routine and finished fifth.

On floor, Raisman finished just out of the medals in fourth, with a hit routine.

he U.S. men mounted a valiant effort but fell just short of making the medals podium in the men’s team finals, finishing fourth. Jonathan Horton grabbed the all-around bronze medal, the USA’s first men’s allaround medal since Paul Hamm’s win in 2003.

The U.S Team finished the prelim team competition in third place behind China and Japan.

However, in the team finals competition of three-up, three count, the USA finished in fourth place.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the team, the way they fought from start to finish,” said Kevin Mazeika, the U.S. men’s national team coordinator. “They truly exemplified our team motto of never giving up and always fighting. They showed tremendous tenacity and fortitude. Three-up, three-count is a very different experience. These guys have learned valuable experience through this. We will build on this and it strengthens our resolve as we go forward to 2011 and 2012.”

In the battle for the bronze medal, the U.S. men posted a team total of 268.012, which put them behind Germany’s 271.252. China and Japan were neck and neck for the gold medal, with China coming out on top 274.997 to 273.769.

The USA’s team score for the six apparatus was: 43.566, floor exercise; 40.032, pommel horse; 44.833, still rings; 47.566, vault; 45.016, parallel bars; and 46.999, horizontal bar. The USA’s high bar team total was the highest in the team finals.

On high bar Brooks started the team off strong with a set that included a layout double-double dismount and a score of 15.533.

Horton performed an impressive Cassina and stuck his full-twisting, double layout dismount to post a 15.633. Leyva finished the event for the USA with his high-flying routine that included a layout Kovacs and layout double-double dismount to score 15.833.

Legendre’s 15.266 tied for the highest floor score in the finals. His first pass included a two-and-ahalf twisting double back. Legendre also scored a 16.233 on vault for his front handspring double front half out. On rings, Wynn performed smooth Johanssen and Yamawakis and had a solid doubledouble dismount to score a 15.533.

Horton’s rings included a nice Maltese and ended with his stuck double-double dismount for a score of 15.500.

During the all-around finals, Horton won the men’s bronze medal and said, “I am beyond happy, but not satisfied. If you know the real Jon Horton, you know I want to be the best and I want my team to be the best. This is awesome but I want to keep training. I want to get back in the gym already.”

“It was an amazing performance

by Jon this afternoon,” said Mazeika. “I could not be prouder of him. He fought hard from start to finish. It also was an incredible turnaround from last year’s World Championships (where he placed 17th). The entire USA Team is so proud of him and this medal is huge for us.”

in the all-around came down to the last rotation. Horton just missed the silver, finishing less than two tenths behind Germany’s Philipp Boy. As expected, Japan’s Kohei Uchimura won the all-around gold medal with a 92.331 total. Boy was second at 90.048, followed by Horton at 89.864. Leyva had problems on pommel horse and parallel bars and scored an 86.856 to place 18th.

Horton had a solid pommel horse routine and moved onto rings where he nailed his tucked doubledouble dismount. He performed his handspring, double-front vault and was sixth in the rankings after three events. He had his best parallel bars routine of the week, featuring peach work and a giant double pike before finishing with a Morisue and sticking his double-pike dismount. On high bar, Horton’s routine included a layout full-twisting Kovacs (Cassina), layout Kovacs and a tucked fulltwisting Kovacs with a solid layout full-out dismount.

Bouncing back from pommel horse, Leyva performed a Johanssen to cross on rings, tucked Yamawaki and a half-in/half-out dismount. He performed a Kasamatsu full vault.

Leyva followed his parallel bars routine with a well-executed high bar set that included a Takemoto full, layout Kovacs, a full-twisting Takemoto and his layout doubledouble dismount. On floor, he had a clean routine that ended with a stuck double layout dismount.

During event finals, Legendre had trouble on his floor routine, finishing eighth. On high bar, both Leyva and Brooks hit great routines, but finished just out of the medals in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Gym Clubs Celebrated National Gymnastics Day

O

n Sept. 18, 2010, gymnasts and gym clubs around the U.S. celebrated the 11th annual National Gymnastics Day. National Gymnastics Day promotes physical fitness and gymnastics in communities throughout the country while raising money for Children’s Miracle Network through the Tyson Fitness Challenge. Since the partnership with Children’s Miracle Network was established in 2001, National Gymnastics Day has raised more than $1.2 million for Children’s Miracle Network through the participation and support of USA Gymnastics member clubs. All donations raised through the Tyson Fitness Challenge benefit Children’s Miracle Network hospitals in

the club or gymnast’s local area.

“National Gymnastics Day is the one day a year that our community joins together to help promote our great sport at a higher level,” said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics.

“In addition to building awareness, National Gymnastics Day is also an opportunity to give back. Helping children in need is a worthy cause, and our family has done a tremendous job supporting Children’s Miracle Network.”

he U.S. Women’s Team easily won the title with a score of 232.030, ahead of Canada with a 213.463 and Brazil at 212.994. The U.S. women had the top team scores for all four events: vault, 60.833; bars, 57.699; beam, 57.332; and floor, 56.166.

The U.S. team included: Gabrielle Douglas of Virginia Beach, Va./Excalibur Gymnastics; Brenna Dowell of Odessa, Mo./GAGE; Sarah Finnegan of Lake Latawanna, Mo./GAGE; McKayla Maroney of Laguna Niguel, Calif./All Olympia; Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif./GymMax; and Sabrina Vega of Carmel, N.Y/Dynamic Gymnastics.

Ross said, “I was excited to win the team gold because our team worked hard.

Ross, 13, and Vega, 15, went one-two in the all-around with scores of 57.998 and 57.633, respectively. Ross, who turned 14 on Oct. 24, posted the highest score for bars (14.566), second highest for floor (14.066) and third best for beam (14.266). Her vault score was 15.100.

Vega had the top score for beam (14.800) and third highest for floor (13.900). Her other two scores were vault at 14.700 and bars at 14.233.

During event finals, 14-year-old Maroney won the vault and floor titles with her scores of 15.387 and 14.225, respectively. Her vaults were a Yurchenko two-and-a-half and a round-off half-on to layout front handspring front half off.

Brazil’s Daniele Matias Hypolito was second on vault at 14.425, followed by Colombia’s Jessica Gil Ortiz. On floor, the U.S. finished 1-2 with Maroney in first followed by teammate Ross in second, scoring 14.075. Canada’s Kristina Vaculik took third.

The bars title went to 14-year-old Douglas with a score of 14.225. Jessica Lopez of Venezuela was second at 14.150, and the bronze was earned by Vaculik at 14.075. Ross posted a 13.350 for sixth.

Vega won the beam gold medal with her 14.500 score. Lopez barely edged out 13-yearold Finnegan, 14.200 to 14.150, for the silver medal.

he U.S. Men’s Team won the team title with a score of 352.150, with Brazil and Canada tying for second at 343.950 points. The U.S. men had the top team scores on floor (59.000) and high bar (59.350); second highest for rings (58.000), vault (62.850) and parallel bars (57.600); and third highest score on pommel horse (55.350).

The men’s team included: Dylan Akers of Kingwood, Texas/Cypress Academy of Gymnastics; Alex Buscaglia of Cary, Ill./Stanford University; Jake Dalton of Sparks, Nev./University of Oklahoma; Bryan Del Castillo of Laguna Niguel, Calif./University of California, Berkeley; Wes Haagensen of Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Olympic Training Center; and Glen Ishino of Santa Ana, Calif./University of Calif.-Berkeley.

Ishino posted a total of 88.150 to win the allaround silver medal. Mexico’s Daniel Corral Barron was first at 88.750, with Colombia’s Jorge Hugo Giraldo Lopez third at 87.450. Haagensen just missed the medals podium with his fourth place tie with Chile’s Enrique Gonzalez Sepulveda.

Ishino’s scores were: floor, 14.950; pommel horse, 14.700; rings, 14.300; vault, 15.350; parallel bars, 14.250; and high bar, 14.600. Haagensen’s total of 86.450 included 14.000, floor; 13.500, pommel horse; 15.200, rings; 14.300, vault; 14.350, parallel bars; and 15.100, high bar.

During event finals, Ishino captured the pommel horse title with his routine that earned a 15.175. Colombia’s Jorge Peña Castiblanco was second at 14.775, and Canada’s Casey Sandy was third at 14.650. Del Castillo tied for sixth at 13.375.

On floor, Dalton scored a 15.050 to win the bronze medal. Santiago Lopez Viana of Mexico was first at 15.125, with Gonzaley finishing second at 15.075. Ishino was fifth at 14.900.

Haagensen finished fourth on rings at 14.925.

Regulo Carmona of Venezuela won the gold with his 15.575. Tommy Ramos of Puerto Rico placed second at 15.225, with Federico Molinari of Argentina third at 15.100.

The USA won the gold and bronze medals for the high bar. Buscaglia won the title with his 15.475 score. Venezuela’s Jose Luis Fuentes was second at 14.900. Haagensen posted a 14.800 for third.

In vault, Buscaglia and Dalton finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Sepulveda claimed the gold medal at 16.012, with Brazil’s Sergio Sasaki Jr. (15.950) and Puerto Rico’s Luis Rivera (15.850) in second and third, respectively. Corral Barron of Mexico won the parallel bars title.

Rhythmic World Championships U.S. rhythmic gymnastics all-around champion Julie Zetlin of Bethesda, Md., became the first U.S. woman since Mary Sanders in 2003 to advance to the all-around finals at the 2010 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, held in Moscow. Zetlin finished 23rd with a score of 99.025. In addition, the U.S. rhythmic group qualified for the 2011 World Championships, the next step for them toward Olympic qualification.

etlin’s scores included a 24.850 for her rope routine, a 24.650 for her hoop routine, a 25.400 in the ball event, and a 24.650 for her ribbon routine to finish with a total all-around score of 99.025.

She said, “I’m very happy.

I’ve had the number eight in my head for a while now because I wanted to make all-around finals and there are four routines in prelims and four routines in finals. I knew I had to stay consistent and calm and hit those eight routines. “ Zetlin finished 25th in the preliminary all-around competition, but qualified for the finals in the 22nd position due to the two gymnasts per country rule. She trains at Capital Rhythmics in Gaithersburg, Md., with her coach Olga Kutuzova.

After prelims, Zetlin said, “I’m more than satisfied. This has been the most consistent performance of the year for me. I’ve been training hard.

My coaches and the entire team helped me a lot. I’m very thankful to them.”

Russia’s Evgenia Kanaeva and Daria Kondakova finished one-two in the all-around competition with scores of 116.250 and 113.825, respectively. Belarus’

Melitina Staniouta finished third with a score of 110.350.

The USA Team finished 15th out of 38 in the team competition with a score of 241.250. Russia earned top honors for the team title with a score of 284.925.

Belarus finished second with a score of 269.700.

Azerbaijan took the bronze medal with a team score of 265.225. This is the secondhighest team result for the USA at a World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships; the team placed 10th in 2003.

The other U.S. rhythmic gymnasts who competed in individual competition were: JoAnna Arnold of Northville, Mich./ North Shore Rhythmic Gymnastics Center; Shelby Kisiel of Houston/ North Shore Rhythmic Gymnastics Center; and Olga Pavlenko of Brooklyn, N.Y./ Isadora.

The U.S. Group, which includes Jessica Bogdanov, Stephanie Flaksman, Megan Frohlich, Michelle Przybylo, Sofya Roytburg and Sydney Sachs, finished 22nd in the all-around, where the top 24 groups qualified to compete at the 2011 World Rhythmic Championships. The U.S. group finished 22nd in the all-around by placing 17th with rope/ribbon and 24th in hoop. The U.S. group trains at North Shore Rhythmics in Buffalo Grove, Ill.

Dooley, Gluckstein win World Cup Series synchro title Logan Dooley of Lake Forest, Calif., and Steven Gluckstein of Atlantic Highlands, N.J., won the FIG’s World Cup Series title for synchronized trampoline, a first for the United States. They took top honors for the seven-event series based on their two gold and one silver medal finishes.

“Logan and Steven have just been incredible, and this is an outstanding accomplishment,” said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. “We are so encouraged about their results both individually and as a team. They are raising the bar for trampoline in the United States, and are to be commended on their hard work and dedication.”

The duo clinched the Series crown by winning the synchronized trampoline title at the World Cup in Albacete, Spain, and the Nissen Cup in Davos Switzerland, as well as finishing second at the World Cup in Loule, Portugal.

This is our biggest accomplishment thus far, for ourselves and our country,” said Gluckstein. “We love being first place!” Dooley said, “Realizing that this was a milestone accomplishment for USA Trampoline was both exciting and humbling.”

In individual trampoline, Gluckstein (from Ultra Twisters) finished 12th in the World Cup standings, with Dooley (from World Elite) placing 14th.

The World Cup Series for trampoline features seven events, and the overall champion and rankings are determined based on each

athlete’s accomplishments at those events.

At the FIG World Cup in Spain, Gluckstein and Dooley easily won the title with their 49.700, more than three points ahead of silvermedalists Martin Myers and Charles Thibault of Canada (46.300).

In individual trampoline, Gluckstein just missed the medal podium by threetenths of a point for a fourth place finish at 40.500.

Dong Dong of China won the men’s title at 41.800, just ahead of his teammate Chunlong Lu at 41.500.

Japan’s Kazuma Takahashi was third at 40.800. Dooley was sixth at 39.600.

A few weeks later, Dooley and Gluckstein won the silver medal at the Loule World Cup in Portugal, scoring a 49.300.

The pair qualified fifth in prelims. France’s Pennes and Martiny, who led qualification, won gold with a 49.500.

Shanelle Landry of Lafayette, La./Ultra Twisters, and Nani Vercruyssen of Honolulu, Hawaii/Hawaii Academy, finished fifth in women’s synchro with a 42.7.

In individual trampoline finals, Gluckstein finished fifth with 40.900, and Dooley was eighth at 39.100.

Yuliya Hall, 2007 World Championships Team Gold Medalist in women’s tumbling, was married on August 28, 2010, in Las Vegas, Nev., to Michael Brown. The couple’s residence is Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Hall, age 35, is a three-time national champion in women’s tumbling (2010, 2007 and 2005). She’s won seven medals total in World Cup, World Games and World Championships competition for women’s tumbling from 2005 to 2007. She is in the process of starting her own competitive gymnastics program, called Vladlen Gymnastic.

U.S. junior men’s team wins title at three-country meet

A

U.S. junior men’s team won the title at the USA-Great Britain-Switzerland competition on Oct. 16 at Lilleshall, Great Britain. The USA’s Sean Melton of Orlando, Fla., and Timothy Wang of Riverside, Calif., went one-two in the allaround.

Members of the U.S. squad are: Adrian de los Angeles of Long Beach, Calif./SCATS HB; Jonathan Deaton of Longmeadow, Mass./Daggett’s Gold Medal Gymnastics; Stacey Ervin of Taylor, Mich./Mills Gymnastics; Melton, who trains at Orlando Metro; Yul Moldauer of Arvada, Colo./5280 Gymnastics; and Timothy Wang, who trains at South Coast Gymnastics.

The three countries had a joint training camp that culminated with the competition. The USA scored 249.000 points to Britain’s 246.050 and Switzerland’s 240.450.
