USA Gymnastics’ Talent Opportunity Program is in its 19th season and going strong. Fifty-four athletes participated in the three-day National TOPs Team Camp at the Women’s National Team Training Center and an additional 58 athletes participated in the TOPs B Camp.

The 14th Future Stars National Championships was held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center and featured the USA’s best 10-, 11- 12- and 13-yearolds in the country who perform special Future Stars competitive routines.

appy New Year!!! As we head into the New Year, our eyes are already set on the promise of the London Olympic Games that are just 19 months away. USA Gymnastics is confident we are on track to achieve our goals and continue to succeed on the international stage.

The gymnastics season goes into high gear in January, with events for gymnasts at all levels, both nationally and internationally.

The second annual Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup Series kicks off the second week in January, with a total of 18 invitationals involved in the selection of the field for the 2011 Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup. Thirtysix young female gymnasts will have the opportunity to compete in the 2011 Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup, scheduled for March 4 in Jacksonville, Fla., the day before the AT&T American Cup. Proceeds from the Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup benefit the Nastia Liukin Fund, a charitable fund within the National Gymnastics Foundation.

White wins silver medal at 2010 World Trampoline & Tumbling Championships

The USA had a strong showing at the 2010 World Trampoline and Tumbling Championships, qualifying eight athletes into five finals. Austin White of Newport Coast, Calif., won a silver medal for men’s double mini-trampoline. The competition took place in Metz, France, Nov. 12-14.

Austin White, 22, of World Elite Gymnastics, earned a 35.000 for his first routine, which had an error on his landing, but came back with a very strong second pass to post a 38.000 for a 73.000. Portugal’s Andre Lico just edged out White by 0.400 for the gold. The bronze went to Russia’s Evgeny Chernoivanov at 72.700. The USA’s Alex Renkert of Indianapolis, Ind./Interactive Academy, came in fourth with a 72.100.

“(Winning a medal) was incredible,” said White.

“It’s been a goal of mine for almost five years now. I had a really hard time in warm-ups, but once I got up to compete, I pulled everything together and went for it. I am super excited and proud to bring home a medal for the USA.” Yuliya Hall of Pocatello, Idaho, and Karly Judkins of Tulsa, Okla., finished fourth and seventh place, respectively, in the women’s tumbling final. Hall, who trains at Team Revolution, scored a 61.600 and moved up three positions from prelims. Judkins, who trains at Xtreme Elite, earned a 60.000 and moved up one spot from prelims. TOP Talent TOPs National Team

USA Gymnastics’ Talent Opportunity Program (TOPs) is in its 19th season and is still going strong. Fifty-four athletes participated in the three-day National TOPs Team Camp at the Women’s National Team Training Center, held at the Karolyi Ranch in Huntsville, Texas, Dec. 1-5. An additional 58 athletes participated in the TOPs B Camp, Dec. 5-9. For the first time in the program’s history, 8-year-old gymnasts participated in the training camps with tremendous success. The athletes were instructed in all four Olympic events and dance by the National Team Developmental Coaching staff. Lectures were also given by the staff to the coaches on training techniques.

During the months of June and July, 2,800 gymnasts ages 7-11 were evaluated on physical abilities at the state level. From there the top 7 year olds were named

to the Diamond Level team. The best 280 8-11 year old athletes were invited to participate in the National TOPs Testing in October, where they were evaluated on the same physical abilities tests and basic gymnastics skills.

From National TOPs Testing, 54 athletes were named to the TOPs National Team and invited to participate in the National TOPs Training Camp in December.

Former TOPs athletes include Carly Patterson, Chellsie Memmel, Courtney Kupets, Tasha Schwikert, Alicia Sacramone and Samantha Peszek, just to name a few.

Gary Warren, the USA Gymnastics Elite Program Director who oversees the TOPs program, said, “The training camps were, without a doubt, the most productive camps in our 19 years of existence and the inclusion of the 8-year-old athletes was a tremendous success.”

Future Stars National Championships

T

he 14th Future Stars National Championships was held at the United States Olympic Training Center, Nov. 5, and featured the USA’s best 10-, 11- 12-, and 13-year-olds in the United States who perform special Future Stars competitive routines.

Based on the results at the championships, USA Gymnastics identified the Future Stars Developmental Team, which includes the top 18 gymnasts in both the 10- and 11-yearold divisions, 14 gymnasts in the 12-year-old division, and the top six gymnasts in the 13-year-old division. The top nine athletes in the 10- and 11-year-old divisions, the top seven athletes in the 12-year-old division, and top three athletes in the 13-year-old division will be invited to a special Future Stars camp to be held at the USOTC in the summer of 2011.

The Future Stars National Championships are held in conjunction with the National Coaches Workshop, the premier educational event for the men’s program. In addition

to the competition, Future Stars athletes and their parents participated in workshop activities that feature lectures, technical presentations, and hands-on coaching sessions. Presenters include Junior National Coaching Staff members, National Team coaches, sports science personnel, USOC staff and special guests.

The Future Stars program is designed to identify talented athletes and to get them started on the right developmental path to national and international success. The program uses a special competitive routine format to evaluate the skill, strength and flexibility development of the athlete.

The top all-arounders in each of four age divisions, 10-, 11-, 12-, and 13-year-old, were recognized. Dillan King of Arete Gymnastics, Davis Grooms of Champion Gymnastics Academy, Favian Valdez of Orlando Metro, Cory McFann of Hocking Valley Gymnastics, and Grant Breckenridge of Buffalo Grove each had the highest all-around totals in their respective divisions.

Gymnastics community’s total donations to Children’s Miracle Network exceed $1.3M Gymnastics World

S

ince 2001, gymnastics clubs across the country have raised more than $1.3 million for Children’s Miracle Network. This year, gym clubs and their members raised nearly $116,000 as part of their celebrations for National Gymnastics Day through open house events and the Tyson Fitness Challenge, a joint initiative of USA Gymnastics and Tyson Foods that helps kids become more physically active through fun activities. The monies raised are distributed to each gym club’s local Children’s Miracle Network hospital, which helps children around the country who are fighting illness.

For the fourth consecutive year, the top fundraising club is Gymnastics World, Inc. of Broadview Heights, Ohio, which raised $26,925 for Children’s Miracle Network this year.

The club’s efforts again were led by Abby Villenauve, the individual fund-raising winner for the last two years who brought in $9,630 of this year’s total. The top three clubs and individual participants receive prizes from AAI, Tyson and USA Gymnastics.

USA Gymnastics: Last year you were a top fundraiser. What motivates you each year to continue to “raise the bar” with fundraising?

Abby: Each year I have achieved a little more than my goal. So, each year we decide how much to raise the goal for the next year. I know that every penny I raise will go to Rainbow Babies and I like helping kids less fortunate.

USA Gymnastics: Who did you ask to help raise money?

Abby: My mom, sister Sammy and I did a raffle for a gift card at our grocery store, which raised almost $500.

I sent emails to my friends, family and people my dad works with. We kept updating the website and our Facebook page with new information to keep everyone informed of how we were doing.

USA Gymnastics: If you could summarize, in one sentence, the best part about this event, what would you tell other athletes?

Abby: The best part of the event was when “Anonymous” donated exactly the amount we needed to help us reach the $10,000 goal. We didn’t reach our “goal” until after the deadline, but it was great we did it.

USA Gymnastics: What would you tell other athletes who may want to get involved?

Abby: You have to believe that a little donation can make a big difference.

USA Gymnastics: Last year you were also a top fundraiser.

What motivates you to continue to “raise the bar” with fundraising?

Mary Kate: I started raising money for Children’s Miracle Network after visiting the Children’s Specialized Hospital more than three years ago. Now I feel like CMN is a part of me. Each year I set out to do the best I can for the kids in need, and it seems like my friends and family do the best they can for me.

USA Gymnastics: Who did you ask to help raise money?

Mary Kate: I asked everyone I knew in person, through email, and phone calls. My friend, Alana, made a video to promote our benefit show, “Miracles,” and we sent it out via Facebook and posted it on our gym’s website.

USA Gymnastics: If you could summarize, in one sentence, the best part about this event, what would you tell other athletes?

Mary Kate: The best part for me has to be “Miracles,” our benefit show to raise money; our whole gym is a part of this amazing experience. We are totally connected as a team for something so much bigger than us. It makes us who we are, Northern Elite, an amazing community!

USA Gymnastics: Last year you were a top fundraiser.

What motivates you each year to continue to “raise the bar” with fundraising?

Emma: Several years ago my sister needed brain surgery and it was a really scary time for my family. It made me think about what it is like to have something terrible happen to you, your family members or friends. Since then, my sister has made a full recovery, but there are many other families that aren’t as lucky and really need the support. I think this is an excellent cause for children and families of all ages to help others.

USA Gymnastics: Who did you ask to help raise money?

Emma: I asked neighbors, family members and friends, both by email and in person going doorto-door, explaining about my past fundraising efforts and what Children’s Miracle Network offers.

USA Gymnastics: If you could summarize, in one sentence, the best part about this event, what would you tell other athletes?

Emma: It’s hard to summarize because this is such a great experience. You feel like you have become a better person inside and out. You have the opportunity to give something from your heart to children and families, which makes you feel like you’ve done a great thing. This is something I will never forget.

Pan American Rhythmic Gymnastics USA Wins 8 Medals

T

he United States won a total of eight medals at the 2010 Pan American Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico – three gold, four silver, and one bronze – and qualified in both individual and group rhythmic gymnastics for the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara.

2010 U.S. all-around champion Julie Zetlin of Bethesda, Md., won the all-around title, posting a total score of 98.600. Twenty-year-old Zetlin, who trains at Capital Rhythmics, earned the top scores in hoop (24.825), ball (24.575) and ribbon (25.150), as well as the third highest score for rope (24.050).

The U.S. Team won the rhythmic gymnastics silver medal with a score of 281.300. Mexico won the title with a 282.425, and Brazil was third with 264.775.

Sixteen-year-old Shelby Kisiel of Houston/North Shore Rhythmic Gymnastics Center, finished just off the podium in fourth place at 93.100. Her individual event scores were: hoop, 23.425; ball, 23.250; ribbon, 23.350; and rope, 23.075. Anastasia Torba of Orinda, Calif./Allegro Rhythmic, earned a 23.200 for her ribbon routine, and Olga Pavlenko of Brooklyn, N.Y./ Isadora, scored a 22.425 for her ball routine.

Mexico’s Cynthia Valdez was second in the all-around at 95.200, and her teammate Vero Navarro was third at 94.150.

Canada won the group title with a score of 44.725 followed by Brazil and Venezuela. The USA group finished fifth with a score of 39.000. The U.S. group, which trains at North Shore Rhythmic in Buffalo Grove, Ill., includes Jessica Bogdanov, Megan Frohlich, Michelle Przybylo, Sofya Roytburg, and Sydney Sachs.

During individual event finals, Zetlin earned two more gold medals in rope (24.200) and ball (24.250) and a bronze medal in the ribbon event (23.100), while Kisiel won the silver medal in ribbon (23.225).

In hoop, Kisiel’s routine received a 23.550, and Zetlin tallied a 23.125 to finish fourth and fifth, respectively.

Kisiel finished fifth place in the ball event with a score of 23.150 and seventh in the rope event with a score of 22.425.

During group event finals, the U.S. group won a silver medal for both their five hoop and three ribbons/two ropes routines, recording a 23.075 and 21.950, respectively. Canada won gold on both events, taking the titles for three ribbons/two ropes and five hoops with a 23.000 and 23.775, respectively.

Pan American Cup 2010 - Trampoline USA Wins 2 Medals

U.S. trampoline athletes won two medals, a gold and a bronze, at the Pan American Cup 2010 in Guadalajara, Mexico, on Dec. 4.

Logan Dooley, 23, of Lake Forest, Calif., won the men’s trampoline gold medal. Nani Vercruyssen, 18, of Honolulu is the women’s trampoline bronze medalist. During the qualification round of competition, the USA qualified for berths in men’s and women’s trampoline for the 2011 Pan American Games, Oct. 14-30 in Guadalajara.

Dooley, who trains at World Elite Gymnastics, won the men’s title with his routine that earned a 40.400.

Canada’s Charles Thibault was second at 39.200, and Brazil’s Rodrigo Pacheco was third at 36.900. Neil Gulati of Irvine, Calif./World Elite, qualified into the finals in the third position but finished seventh after finals (8.100).

Vercruyssen, who trains at the Hawaii Academy, finished fourth in the qualification round of competition and moved up to third with a score of 36.500 to earn the bronze medal in the finals. Canada’s Karen Cockburn and Rosannagh Maclennan finished first and second, respectively. Dakota Earnest of Plains, Texas/Acrospirits, was in third after qualifications but dropped to fourth after finals, posting a score of 36.200.

Four Key Habits a Gymnast Needs to avoid Injuries Darrell Barnes, LAT, ATC,CSCS

A

s the gymnast’s season begins, the demands on his/her body increases.

Coaches spend extensive time teaching skills and implementing conditioning programs to prevent injuries. But aches and pains and even injuries still can occur. Many times, these aches/pains and even injuries can be decreased or avoided if each gymnast developed four basic habits to prepare himself/herself for the rigors of the season. These four habits are not new and I am sure they are discussed frequently in most gyms. When an athlete takes a personal responsibility to implement these four habits, the effectiveness increases substantially!

1) Nutritional Preparation

You can’t drive to the gym if your car is out of gas, and you cannot perform at your best without putting fuel in your body. Make sure you eat three balanced meals per day. Adding pre-and post-workout snacks will provide the extra fuel needed for optimal performance and help your body recover from intense training. Consult a registered dietitian for performance-based nutritional information.

Open communication between gymnast, parent and coach is a habit that needs to be improved. Many injuries could be avoided if you would tell your parent/coach that you are hurting or are having difficulty concentrating on a skill. I am not saying you should complain every time something is sore or difficult, but you should not be afraid to communicate issues that may increase your chance of injury.

When discussing injury prevention with coaches, I often hear them say that injuries happen more from a lack of concentration than from an inability to perform a skill. It is imperative that you as a gymnast work on mental focus. Upon arriving at the gym, you need to remove all the distractions of the day and focus on your training. When focus is lost, mistakes are made and injuries can happen.

3) Physical Preparation

One of my favorite quotes is by John Wooden, “Don’t mistake activity for achievement.” That is what many gymnasts do with their physical preparation. Warm-up and conditioning become a social activity, but your body doesn’t achieve much. Athletes need to focus on their specific physical imbalances. Where are you weak or inflexible? What exercises are you good at and which ones do you struggle with? It is normal to work at the things you are good at and avoid the ones that are difficult. This promotes further imbalances and can lead to injury. When working on your warm-up and conditioning, you should emphasize the quality of movement, not the quantity. Poor form in your preparation will lead to poor form in your skills.

he USA’s Katelyn Ohashi of New Castle, Wash., and McKenzie Wofford of McKinney, Texas, won a total of 10 medals in the junior division of the Bumbo Cup in Pretoria, South Africa, Dec. 4 – five gold, four silver and one bronze.

In the individual event finals, the USA won all four gold medals, along with three silver and one bronze. Wofford took top honors for the uneven bars (14.250) and balance beam (14.525), with Ohashi in second place (bars, 13.875; beam, 14.150). Ohashi was the champion for vault (14.375) and floor exercise (14.500). Wofford claimed the floor silver (13.825) and vault bronze (13.975).

Ruggeri Wins 2 Medals in Japan 2010 u.S. horizontal Bar silver-medalist Paul Ruggeri of Manlius, N.Y., won two bronze medals on floor and high bar at the 2010 Toyota Cup in Aichi, Japan.

The 10-country field featured five 2010 World Championship medalist including World all-around champion Kohei Uchimura of Japan; parallel bars champion Feng Zhe and high bar champion Zhang Chenglong, both of China; vault champion Thomas Bouhail of France; floor bronze-medalist Daniel Purvis and pommel horse silver-medalist Louis Smith, both of Great Britain.

Ruggeri, who competes for the University of Illinois and was the alternate for the 2010 U.S. Men’s World Championships Team, won the bronze medal on floor with a score of 15.175 and the bronze medal on high bar with a score of 15.750. He also took fourth on vault (15.862) and fifth place on parallel bars (14.750).

RJ Heflin of Houston Gymnastics Academy, made his senior international debut, finishing 11th on floor and 10th on pommel horse with 13.750 and 12.750, respectively.

2008 Olympic team bronze-medalist Joey Hagerty of Albuquerque, N.M., tied for sixth on parallel bars (14.675) and finished in eighth place on high bar (14.350). Hagerty trains at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

USA wins five medals at 2010 Top Gym

T

he USA’s Ariana Guerra, 13, of League City, Texas, and Ericha Fassbender, 14, of Katy, Texas, celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday by winning medals at the recent Top Gym junior competition in Charleroi, Belgium.

Guerra won the vault gold, allaround silver, and beam bronze medals. Fassbender took top honors on uneven bars, followed by a silvermedal finish on floor. Both gymnasts train at Stars Gymnastics.

Guerra posted a total score of 53.883 for the all-around silver medal. Russia’s Anastasia Sidorova claimed the gold with a 56.917.

Italy’s Elisa Meneghini edged out Fassbender for third by 0.167.

Guerra had the second highest scores on both vault and beam. Her individual event scores were: 14.600, vault; 12.850, bars; 13.733, beam; and 12.700, floor. Fassbender’s apparatus scores were: 14.267, vault; 12.750, bars; 12.733, beam; and 13.567, floor.

During event finals, the USA won two of the four event titles; Russia’s Sidorova won the other two.

On vault, Guerra topped Sidorova by 0.067 to win the title. Guerra’s two vault scores were 14.067 and 14.433, which gave her an average of 14.250.

Fassbender was the champion on bars with a score of 13.933, beating the Netherlands’ Antje Vandevelde by 0.700.

Guerra claimed the bronze medal on beam with a score of 13.167, with Sidorova and Makra going one-two.

Fassbender scored 14.100 on floor, finishing just behind Sidorova, with Makra coming in third.

FACES IN THE GYM t Amanda Tran t Rebecca Smith

Shoreline, Washington Amanda, 15, trains at Kortel Academy of Gymnastics with her coach Irina Korosteleva. Amanda placed sixth in the all-around at the 2010 Visa Championships and earned a spot on the Junior Rhythmic National Team.

Huntington Beach, California Rebecca, 7, is a Level 4 at SCATS. She won five medals at the Southern California State Meet, first on bars, beam, floor, and in the all-around (37.45). She’s coached by Shannon Hong, Ashley David, and Amber Graupner.

Laken, 10, is a Level 5 gymnast and trains at KPAC (Kristie Phillips Athletic Center). Last year, Laken won first in the all-around at the NC Rookie 2 State Meet and placed first in the all-around for region 8 with a score of 38.550.

Kate, 8 and Jon, 15, are the 2010 Level 6 Mixed Pair Acrobatic Gymnastics National Champions! This was Jonathan’s first year of gymnastics and the first year of competition for both. They train at Gymnastics Beat with coach Tony Gonzales.

Warren, Michigan Matthew, 18, is now a Junior Elite on Tumbling and Double-Mini at AGT Flip City. He’s coached by Peter Roberts. As a Level 10, he took first in tumbling and double-mini at the Fairland Classic in Maryland.
