GYMNASTICS

MESSAGE

USA GYMNASTICS IS BEGINNING TO ROLL OUT A NEW EDUCATIONAL initiative, known as USA Gymnastics Unive s路ty. The announcement of USA Gymnastics University is just the beginning of a great revolution! USA Gymnastics University is gymnastics education. The University will provide greater educational ot:1p.o unities for coaches, instructors, teachers, judges, and administrators in all of the disciplines and areas of gymnastics, both recreational and competitive. Included as part of the University are the educational courses and programs offered through USA Gymnastics as well as a means for professional certification. Current education programs, including Safety Certification, Regional and National Congresses, program clinics and more will be included under the USA Gymnastics University umbrella . Additional educational opportunities are also planned as part of the University. In conjunction with program and industry experts, online and live courses, workshops, and clinics will continually be developed and offered. USA Gymnastics University curricula is planned to meet the needs of our members, including education in preschool programs, school-age recreational programs, competitive athlete training, spotting, skill progressions and development, judging criteria, business and leadership training and various areas of sport science and sport management. The second component of USA Gymnastics University is the certification program. Certification will be available within four colleges: program , recreational, judge, and business. Each college is comprised of five levels of certification. To earn certification, gymnastics professionals must complete designated courses from the University curriculum as well as other requirements . Continuing education and professional certification benefit our members and the sport as a whole in numerous ways including raising the level of professionalism, increasing knowledge, and providing safe and fun environments for participation in the sport of gymnastics. USA Gymnastics is committed to help prepare all professionals to work toward their highest potential. USA Gymnastics University's educational courses and certification program will be a continual work in progress. This year we are taking the first big step in that process. Certification program requirements and details have been developed and are being presented at various forums including Regional and National Congresses. Existing courses are being revamped and new courses are already being developed . We expect to have two new online courses available by September, a few courses debuting in 2008, and even more in future years. Our next step is to begin certifying members. Although the structures of the University and the certification program have been developed, certification will not be immediately available. Courses comprising the University curriculum are still in the planning and development stages. Level 1 certification is targeted for completion in 2008, with additional levels coming after. As the new courses and certification program are implemented, the USA Gymnastics University will continually be reviewed to ensure it is meeting the needs of our members and our industry. The greater educational opportunities offered through USA Gymnastics University are extremely important for our sport. It is the next major step in the growth and development of our sport, our professionals and leaders as well as our athletes. As is our responsibility as a National Governing Body, USA Gymnastics is setting a standard for professionalism and education in the sport of gym nastics. Be sure to stay informed regarding the new developments of the University and take advantage of these great learning opportunities! You can begin today, continuing your education, developing your knowledge, and earning credit towards your USA Gymnastics University certification.

• Parents • ,

It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's a helicopter parent! These hovering Moms and Dads tend to swoop down and rush in to prevent any possible harm or discomfort that might befall their child-even if such lessons would help their children learn from their mistakes. Of course, most parents mean well. And if we are going to operate gyms that rely on the attraction and retention of young students, we must develop strategies for dealing with the overprotective parents who sign them up. Ready or not, here they come. Many of today's parents might have partied like it was 1999 during the 90s but the party is over. These overprotective mommies and daddies have children now and they are watching them like hawks. No matter where their children are, they are never too far away. Soft urgings of "you can do it" have been replaced by a reassuring yet disturbing mantra of "just let me do it. It wi II be faster, bigger, bolder, and just plain better if I take charge." Several of our Powerful Words member schools and coaching clients bemoan similar complaints during our initial consultations. They start conversations with "It's not the kids that I mind so much ...it's the parents!" While all parents are not hovering over us, many school owners and instructors seem to feel that the majority of parents are getting worse. And everyone-from children to coaches-is paying for it. As gym owners and coaches, we must learn to work with all kinds of people so that we can best serve our clients and have an effective impact on our students. If we take the time to understand where these parents are coming from and how we can help them work with us, they can become our greatest resource.

W~atze~M~? Parents are overprotective for all different reasons. We already mentioned one major reason : parents perceive that when they do somethi ng for their child, it comes out better. But there are other reasons as well. Here are a few:

1. Need for control Parents cannot control the terrorists. They can not control the kidnappers or the pedophiles. They can , however, control how their children spend their time and of course, with whom .

2. Fear the failure These Moms and Dads can not stand by and watch their child feel inadequate, unprepared, or miserable in any way. It is too heartbreaking .

all, childhood is supposed to be a time to make mistakes, learn from them and grow to be independent. Without this training ground, adulthood can be a very rude awakening.

~~~06-~~
iI1d«de t& ~:
1. Undermining children's confidence
They feel it is their responsibility to protect their child from these negative feelings.
3. Desire to live vicariously These Moms and Dads spend their time doing a large amount of their child's work and looking for acceptance and approval for their own performance. They throw themselves into every activity their child does and take it personally when their child does not succeed.
4. Entitlement These parents are constantly checking to see how you are treating their child in comparison to others. They keep their eyes on everyone else's plate. They believe that their child should get more of your time, additional energy from your staff, and lots of free "extras." If it will help their child, they will ask for it. Clearly, parents have some complex reasons for hovering . But is it always for the greater good?
74e ~ ~ 06- ~
~
While overprotective parents want the very best for their children, in the long run, they might be doing more harm than good. After
No one can argue that confidence is one of the most important predictors of success. It is the foundation of self reliance and lays the groundwork for commitment, perseverance, goal achievement, and courage. When parents take the reins, they do not allow their children to learn how to take charge o{their own lives. The repercussions can be long lasting.
2. Instilling fear of failure If a child is learning that success is always dependant on the help of Mommy and Daddy, he can become fearful that failure is imminent if he tries to go it alone. Clearly no parent wants to see his or her child fail. However, if a child is continually shielded from disappointment and inadequacy, he or she is being denied the chance to learn how to persevere.
3. Stunting growth and development Since helicopter parents are essentially "babying" their children, it is not surprising that kids of smothering parents can be less mature than their self-reliant counterparts. Studies have shown that these children lack some of the knowledge to negotiate what they need, solve their own problems, stay safe, and interact in close quarters with others.
4. Raising anxiety levels Research has shown that parents who consistently judge their own self worth by their children's success report feeling more sad and having a more negative self image than parents who did not engage in this behavior. Interestingly, parents' anxiety ~ AUGUST 1007 • rECHHIQUE
levels and dissatisfaction with life has shown a marked increase during the past 20 years as parents have become increasingly involved in their children's lives.
s~ to ~ ettitk tJfIeIt-~ ~ Parents might be adults, but that does not mean that they have all the answers. If you want to help over-involved parents help their children without white-knuckling the steeri ng wheel, here are some gentle ways to go about it:
that disappointment is an excellent opportunity to assist children in eXerClSlng resiliency. Relay that while you understand how difficult it is to see a child in pain, that empathizing and helping a child "move on" is a great deal more productive than tryi ng to "fix" the problem.
1. Encourage parents to take advantage of disappointment
2. Promote open communication with the child
If a parent is saddened by a recent letdown
Many parents may want to engage in a discussion with you about a challenge that
in her child's life, help that parent realize
their child is having in class. In order to encourage responsibility on the part of the child, let the parents know that the child is welcome to talk to you about the problem.
3. Support a parent in letting go a little at a time If a parent is continually doing things for her
child, encourage the child and the parent to negotiate one or two things that the child can master on his own that month. Over time, he will be doing more and more on his own.
4. Cheer on parents who stay strong You now know that handing over the reins to their "baby" is difficult for many parents. If an over-involved parent allows his or her child some additional wiggle room or does not rush in when his or her child falls, fails, or forgets something, congratulate him or her! Parents need praise as well.
~
Where should you start? While there are many solutions discussed here, there is no need to get overwhelmed. Just like the parent who is learning to let go, you can choose one or two things to put into place and work on this month, and add on from there. In a matter of months you will have another powerful system in place. Of course, parents might not just fall in line like a bunch of dominos. You must be patient and consistent as well as clear about your goals for this area of your business. What would your ideal parents of your students look like? How could you best facilitate this in your gym? Picture it. Write it out. Relay it. Your diligence will surely payoff. Eventually, and perhaps sooner than you think, you will notice that something has changed. The students will appear more self reliant and the helicopter parents, with your help and support, will have their feet planted firmly on the ground. X
BETWEEN TRAVEL, WARM-UPS, competition, and award ceremonies, millions of athletes, spectators, and judges have that aching pain that just won't stop. Wouldn't it be nice to have some tricks up your sleeve to prevent the back pain before it began? Look no further; here are some tips to ease away the pain.
Unload Your Spine How many times have you sat in a car or plane and begun to stand only to find out that you feel three times your age? Not only have your muscles remained in a static position for the extent of the ride, but the constant vibration and turbulence have tortured your back. Finding the correct sitting position is critical for preventing back pain. I recommend carrying a towel in yo ur travel bag. The diagrams below show the proper way to remain seated for a long duration. Utilizing an everyday towel can have amazing benefits for the spine as a whole. Simply roll the towel lengrh-wise to create a rwo-to-four inch buffer for your spine.
Second, you need a small back support. Maintaining yo ur lumbar curve allows the body to sit in its natural position. This allows the musculature of the spine to relax and creates a more effective resting state. Finally, make sure yo ur feet can firm ly reach the ground. If you are petite in stature, you might need a small stool or spare book to allow you to reach. If your chair is adjustable, lower it until your knees and hips are at a 90 degree angle. With the proper height of the chair, curve of the spine, and buffer for the pelvis you are on your way to pain-free seating.
How Flexible Are You? Now that we unloaded your spine, it is important to address the flexibility of the body as a whole. Think of the body as a slinky. As you bend and move the top portion of the toy, the rest is soon to follow. The body works in the same way. If one portion of you body is tight and inflexible, somewhere along the line another portion will have to compensate. Below are four important stretches where we will urilize that towel once again. Each stretch will focus on a different segment of the body and will be held for 30-60 seconds, three times. For starters, begin with a basic hamstring stretch. Sit down on the floor or a firm bed/couch with your feet ourstretched in front of you. Place the rolled up towel underneath the leg you desire to stretch first. Lower your upper body to the floor, while flexing the leg to a 90 degree angle. Your goal is to reach or exceed that 90 degree angle with a straight leg and pull your toes towards your head. If you are less flexible, feel free to start by placing the towel behind your knee and slowly work on straightening the leg. As you improve, drop the towel inch by inch towards your heels. Next, we will stretch yo ur gluteal muscles. Begin back in the seated position and cross your right leg over your left sliding your right heel up until it is directly above your left knee. Allow your right knee to open to the side. Place the towel over your left foot and lie down bending your left knee towards your chest. Hold for 3060 seconds and then switch sides. The third stretch will concentrate on the quadratus lumborum, iliocostalis, and piriformis muscles. Lie down in a straight body position on your back, facing the ceiling. Bring one knee bent up to your chest and grab a hold of your knee using your opposite arm. Drop the knee to the side of your opposing arm and hold for 30-60 seconds. Switch sides and begin again. ~
Hip jOint ~'---'I--:i--
Femur
place the towel just in front of your ischium, across the seat of your chair. If you are asking, "What is my ischium?" they are the two bones that you sit on while riding a bike. Initially place the towel roll under your femurs just in front of the ischium, your spine is unloaded, or cush ioned, from the bottom up, and the towel takes the brunt of the forces . Similar to the meniscus in your knees, the towel will act as the buffer or cushion for the femur as it sits on the pelvis.
So far, we focused on stretching posterior muscles, but remember, like a slinky, we can not ignore the anrerior musculature. The final stretch is called the flamingo stretch and addresses tight quadriceps. It is petformed in a standing position next to a table or chair that yo u can use as a balance. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Using the same arm as leg, bend your foot tOwards your buttOcks. Remember to keep your knees closely tOgether and squeeze your glutes. Keep your tOes as close to your buttocks as possible and hold for 30-60 seconds. Flexibility can be an amazing componenr for living a painfree life. Completing these four stretches once a day can be the easiest five minutes of prevenrative care you have ever considered. Whether it is right before bed or just before yo ur first cup of coffee, schedule a time where you can focus on improving yo ur qualiry of life and help make your body a more productive and berrer moving system.
Core, Core, Core! Two down ... on e to go! We have addressed proper unlo~ding of the sp ine, fl exibiliry of th e body as a whole, and now we need the final componenr of strength. Poor abdominal strength is one of the prime precipitatOrs of back pain. The core of yo ur body relies on the transve rs e abdominis, indicated by th e red arrows.
The first method you can try is to simply hiss like a car. The TA is taught at the poinr where YOLI hiss and now yo u JUSt have to concenrrate on mainraining that contraction. The seco nd way to activate the TA is to pretend you have a marble in yo ur navel. Roll the marble up tOwards yo ur chest without rotating yo ur pelvis and hold. Once you have chosen th e method for activating the TA, yo u can focus on three separate strengthening exercises. Just like a stepping sro ne, begin at level one and move up as you successfully complete a set of ten, three times, without losing the conrraction within the TA. Make sure you focus on breathing while completing each exercise, and don't get fru strated on the first try. Begin by lying down in the benr knee position and conrracting the transve rse abdominis. While maintaining the conrraction slowly raise one foot off the ground four inches, hold briefly, and return to the initial position . Switch feet and try agai n. You do not get to relax the muscle until all ten marches are completed. If you fail ... try, try again. Once you succeed at all three sets, move to level rwo. Level rwo starts in the same position, and this time yo u raise the one foot four inches off the ground and bring the seco nd foot up to meet ir. Return both feet to the floor, one at ~ rime. Again repeat this process ten rimes for rhree sets. On the final level yo u will again raise the leg four inches off the floor while mainrai ning that height, slowly extend it out until the knee is straight, briefly pause and then return to the benr knee position. Lower the leg back to the floor and repeat on the opposite side.
The Road to Recovery Whether you are in the stands, judging the evenr, or participating yourself, yo u now have three keys to preventing back pain. Be conscienrious of the mechanics of your sitting position and the way you travel berween competitions. Work on improving your flexibility throughout the body, and improve upon your core strength to sUppOrt your spine. By utilizing these keys, those long days, from warm-ups to award ceremonies will speed by without the back pain you are accustomed to. X
For further information please contact: In order to strengthen the transverse abdominis, or TA as it is referred to, you must know how to activate the muscle. There are two different methods for you to choose. Both require you to lie down on your back with your knees bent as if you were going to perform sit-ups, and place two fingertips just inside your hip bones.
BUSINESS
How Much Rent Can I Afford?: A Benchmark for Rent OFTEN, BUSINESS OWNERS USE critical
numbers or benchmarks (a quantity to compare or measure by) to help them manage their business. Many benchmarks are expressed as a percentage of an expense category divided by gross revenue. In our industry, the first expense category I focus on is total payroll, because it is typically the largest. The range for this is huge, as low as 25% and as high as 65%. Usually, the next largest category, and the topic of this month's article, is what I call fixed obligation. Fixed obligation is the total of (1) rent payments including any RE taxes and CAM [common area maintenance]) + (2) all other debt payments (leases and other obligations on equipment, furniture, copiers, computers, etc.) compared to your gross revenue. For instance, if your business 'grosses' $100,OOO/year and your rent and CAM totals $15,OOO/year and your other debt is $5,OOO/year, your fixed obligation is 20% (15k+5k=20k.,.100k=20%). What is a good number to target? Let's start at the upper end: I consider the absolute upper number for fixed obligation to be 25%. Saying this in a more practical
way, a club having a fixed obligation of 25% will probably be able to stay in business, however, it will likely have a difficult time with cash flow and squeezing a profit. If this number stays at 25% too long, generally the owner tends to get frustrated. As for a target, I prefer to see 15%-20%. What is Kids First's fixed obligation? In our previous facility, for FYE 1997 (fiscal year end), we clocked in at 11%, very low. However, the day we moved into the new Kids First facility in 1998 we surged to 31 %, unsustainably high. Keep in mind, the decision to take on such a high fixed obligation was strategic, knowing we had to crank up the revenue to become and remain soLvent. By using sim ple math I was able to determine exactly how much revenue we needed in order to hit the magic 25% benchmark and get out of the red. Fortunately, we hit 25% in 18 months and were able to continue to drive that number down as revenue continued up. In what condition would Kids First be today had we
~ ---~ Small Business
I IIf) f)'I'
4 (~ll~~!~
gotten stuck at 25%? In a word, profitless. We would probably have been able to remain in business but at the expense of quality of life, not an appealing thought. To repeat, 25% can keep you in business but you won't likely see any profit. Now that time has passed, Kids First's fixed obligation now stands at 16%. With continued revenue growth, we look forward to again seeing 11%, at which time, for the 6th time, we will be ready to move into a larger facility (that's a joke, Penny)! Make it a great month!
