USA GYMNASTICS Message Last mo ~th , we introduced one of USA Gymnastics' primary initiatives fo r 2006, promoting fitness as a core benefit of gymnastics. Over the past few weeks, the staff has developed a strategic plan to market fitness at the national level, and provide platforms to help Member Clubs activate this initiative at the grassroots level.

The magic of this message will truly come to life the more our Member Clubs join the national office in driving this initiative. Gymnastics encourages physical fitness more than any other sport, and naturally creates a healthier lifestyle for young people. Using the "fitness" message wi ll help promote gymnastics in a positive light for the media and general public. Through this, we can help people better understand the lifetime benefits of participating in gymnastics related activities and open the door to new thinking about our sport.

The marketing effort will focus around four key areas - providing information through our magazines and web-site, conducting fitness activities at our premier events including the USA Gymnastics Congress, deve loping a summer Fitness Challenge that will culminate on National Gymnastics Day, and pursui ng national partners and exposure to help promote this message.

A special section of our web-site will be dedicated to articles and information about USA Gymnastics fitness. The home page will have a direct link to this section. Along with this, Technique and USA Gymnastics magazines will feature a fitness related article each month , and provide our members with insight on addressing this growing concern among America's youth. We encourage you to use both the web-site and these articles as a base of information to provide parents and your local media about how gymnastics ca n encourage fitness among young people.

At the upcoming Tyson American Cup and Visa Championships, there wi ll be a Fitness Fun Zone in the concourse where young people and adults can learn more about various fitness techniques. The emphasis will be on balance, strength, flexibility, and other core aspects of developi ng fitness.

These tech niques are the base of activities that we encourage clubs to promote as part of a fitness program in your own gyms. Additionally, we will be conducting fitness exhibitions within the arena to bring even greater attention to the initiative. Plans are also being drafted to conduct fitness sessions at the USA Gymnastics Congress in August.

This year, the theme for National Gymnastics Day will be fitness, and we will be promoting a Fitness Challenge that will begin in June and culminate on National Gymnastics Day. This is a natural platform for clubs to develop a program that keeps kids in the gym throughout the summer months and focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle whi le not in school. More about this program will become available late r this spring.

Lastly, we will seek national partners that can help increase the awareness of USA Gymnastics Fitness, and assist us in the promotion of this message. Through a well developed plan, we can gain new awareness for the benefits of gymnastics and drive more young people into the gym for our Member Clubs.

Once again, I encourage you to consider the promotion of a "fitness" oriented message in your marketing and promotional efforts. For those Member Clubs that are already promoting fitness classes, please se nd us any thoughts you have on the success of these programs to Loree Galimore at club@usa-gymnastics.org. Protei n Fi rst Of aLL the nutrients your body needs, protein is the most vital.

Why? Because it is absolutely necessary to build and maintain all your body's structures, not only muscles, tendons and ligaments, but also your circulatory system, brain, organs, immune system, skin-just about everything.

As old cells slough off these various structures, replacement protein is constantly needed to build and repair them. If fresh protein is not available more or less continuously, the structures start to break down.

Myths About Protein

The media blitz about the American obesity crisis is putting new. attention on the nation's dietary problems, but it isn't necessarily: Many people have false ideas about what protein can do. They expect providing the re-education we need to help us overcome them. : protein to give them big muscles, stamina and athletic prowess. They think that if a little protein is good, a lot must surely be better.

Research shows that the majority of us have only a sketchy grasp of : how nutrition relates to how our bodies function, "or fail to," and we : But eating a hearty serving often regard nutrition as a minor factor in our overall health. : of red meat every night will not make you robust.

converted into carbohydrates for immediate energy or stored as fat, because, unlike fat and carbohydrates, protein can't be held in reserve in the body. You cannot load up on protein Monday and store it for use on Tuesday and Wednesday. In fact, the protein you eat at breakfast is pretty well used up by dinner time.

Protein in weight-Loss It would be nice if your body burned only

the excess fat you are anxious to shed.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way.

Even to function at a minimal level, our bodies first use available carbohydrates, then protein, and last turn to our fat stores for energy. The very process of burning body fat requires the presence of carbohydrates. If there are insufficient carbs and protein in the food you eat, your body breaks down lean body tissue for the proteins, and converts them to carbohydrates for energy.

Foods that contain aLL nine essentiaL amino acids are considered compLete proteins. Those containing Less than nine are called incompLete proteins.

Most animaL proteins faLL into the category of compLete proteins: meat, pouLtry, fish, eggs, milk, cheese and other dairy products. Except for soy, proteins from pLant sources are incompLete.

However, as any vegetarian can tell you, you do not have to eat animal proteins to have an adequate diet. All you have to do is combine foods that supply all nine essential amino acids. For example, rice is very low in lysine but high in methionine, both of which are essential amino acids. Beans are low in methionine, but high in lysine. Served together, they provide a complete protein meal without the expense of prime cuts of meat. There's solid nutritional science behind cheap cuisines based on rice and beans.

Similar logic holds for the pairing of legumes and grains, the ingredients of a peanut butter sandwich. It's also true for dairy and grain combinations, as in macaroni and cheese. These are called complementary proteins.

The catch is that these combinations must be eaten together or within a few hours of each other, or the benefit of pairing them for the complete protein is lost. But when you consider all the options, you can see how easy it can be to give your body the little protein infusions it needs throughout the day to be functioning at its best.

THROUGH THICK AND THIN

That's why people on some low-calorie diets lose muscle mass when they're trying to lose fat. If there is a deficiency of dietary protein, the body essentially cannibalizes its lean mass for the energy to burn its fat mass.

And if the body does have to turn to its own tissues for an energy source, it perceives this as a threat to survival (which it could be) and it slows the metabolism, so that the body uses less and less energy to function overall.

The challenge when choosing your protein sources is to avoid foods that are also high in fat and cholesterol. For example, the fat in a hamburger may almost equal the protein. And peanut butter has almost twice as much fat as protein, bringing the calorie total for two tablespoons to a whopping 190 calories! On the other hand, a serving of fish has very little fat (in most cases, less than one-fifth of an ounce) and it's an essential fat, at that. That's a great protein bargain.

But that's counterproductive in any weight-loss effort, and shows why starvation diets don't work. You want your body to use more of what you take in, not less. So ensuring adequate intake of small amounts of protein spread through the day keeps our bodies from turning to lean tissues for energy, and helps keep metabolism optimal. That's what's meant by the expression "feed your diet."

CompLete and IncompLete Proteins

Proteins are made from chain's of amino acids, of which 20 have been identified so far. Nine are called "essential" amino acids. They are essential in your diet because the body cannot manufacture them .

The other 11 can be made in the body from remnants of leftover carbohydrates, fats and other amino acids.

Anatomical Factors

Gymnasts often learn a back handspring relatively early in their career, and the skill is an enormous feather in their cap. Unfortunately, athletes often learn a back handspring from friends, on the lawn or with instructions that are less than optimal. One of the more important aspects of safe performance in the back handspring is placement of the hands duri ng the hand contact phase. Should the fingers of the hands, and thus hand orientation, be pointing directly forward , outward (to the side), or inward (toward each other)? In judging the best position for the hands, we would like to discuss mechanical and anatomical factors befo re describing what we believe to be the optimal hand position.

Carrying angle. Women and men, on average, have natural anatomical differences in their elbow structure. The elbow structural difference has been noted in an "old wives' tale." The angle of the elbow is called a "carrying angle" because it was thought that women were better designed to carry buckets from a well with this anatomical "difference." The old tale indicated that the laterally oriented forearm (i.e., more to the side) of the female would result in less chance of the bucket hitting the leg during carrYing. Figures 1 and 2 show the elbow structure of a female and male.

When the gymnast lands on his/her hands in a back handspring, considerable force is placed on the hands. Koh, Grabiner and Weiker (3) showed that ground reaction forces on the hands during a back handspring averaged approximately 2.3 times body weight and that valgus forces (forces directed laterally or toward the rear resulting in bending the elbows) reached 0.03 times body weight. Forces seen at the hand and floor interface transfer to the wrist, elbow, and shoulder. However, the values of these forces are not easily determined. Forces of 2.3 times body weight, as seen in the back handspring, are higher than those seen in the lower extremity during aerobic dance (0.98 times body weight "low impact" and 1.98 times body weight "high impact") (5).

Mechanical Factors The purpose of a back handspring is to increase horizontal momentum of the body in the overall tumbling pass and to convert some of the horizontal momentum to vertical during the take-off from the feet.

This final action of redirecting momentum can be made considerably easier by an effective push from the hands. Bosco (1), in reviewing a thesis on the biomechanics of the round-off, back handspring, and somersault by Holmes, wrote that expert gymnasts exceeded lesser gymnasts in all of these aspects. A study by Yuen (7) of three hand positions in the back handspring showed that when the hands were turned in to roughly a 45 degree position, the reSUlting vertical displacement of the center of mass following take-off from the feet was significantly higher than when the hands were placed with fingers forward or fingers outward. Interestingly Sands (6) indicated that gymnasts sh,ould use the position found to be most effective by Yuen in a 1984 coachi ng book. However, this judgment was based on coaching experience rather than data.

In fact, hyperextension of the wrist may be encouraged by this position.

While there can be considerable variation in the magnitude of carrying angles among individuals, the result of the carrying angle is that females, again on average, are at a greater risk of elbow injury because of their elbow structure than males. This problem often becomes apparent when a gymnast falls on an outstretched arm (usually while falling backward).

Potential for Injury Prevention. By turning the hands "in," the gymnasts, particularly females, can reduce the problem of injuring an elbow (due to the carrying angle) and reduce the risk of damage to the wrist (by reducing wrist hyperextension). Hyperextension of the wrist has been linked to an increased likelihood of wrist injury (2;4). The basic idea is that by turning the fingers in (slightly) , the gymnast's elbows are simply more likely to bend. This may seem counterproductive, but the elbow bend does not have to be pronounced. The major point is that the elbows can bend if the gymnast lands "short" or underrotated. In order to visualize the contrast, Figures 3 and 4 show a "short" impact on a gymnast with two hand positions, fingers forward and fingers turned inward.

This is ~ accomplished when the forearms move closer to the floor by permitting elbows to bend on hand impact.

Conclusion Both mechanical and anatomical information support the idea that the best position for the hands during a back handspring is slightly turned in. Research into the mechanical aspects of hand position in the back handspring have shown that turning the hands in results in a higher center of mass on takeoff from the feet when compared to a fingers forward or fingers sideward position. This translates to a better "snap-down" and a more effective rise of the torso during the take-off. Anatomical considerations, although perhaps harder to visualize, show that by turning the hands in, the elbows are more likely to bend during a "short" landing on the hands. The elbow bend takes the forearms away from the hyperextension position of the wrists and thus helps protect the wrists from extreme hyperextension.

Lift the legs upward until the toes touch the bar. Slight knee flexion is allowed.

Lower the legs downward to a long hang and repeat, progressively increasing the number of repetitions. As the gymnast becomes stronger, require straight legs and add a time limit.

David Durante won his seco nd consecutive Winter Cup Challenge title this February in Las Vegas. This year's Winter Cup was extremely important because it was the first men's competition to utilize the new rules. No longer will a 10.0 be the top score an athlete can receive. In fact, Durante's top score of the competition was a 15.90 on vault during finals competition.

Durante, 25, trains at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. He's a proud member of Team Chevron and is coached by Vitaly Marinitch .

Regarding the rules under the new Code of Points, Durante said, "Winning my second straight Winter Cup was very exciting. It came down to the last routine and I knew I needed to hit a solid routine on floor. I finished on floor at Visa Championships, and I fell on my first pass and ended up in third. I felt like it was a chance to redeem myself. Overall I tried to hit clean routines and rely on my execution rather than my difficulty, and it seemed to work."

We asked Durante about the rules under the new Code of Points and he said, "I think we are all still trying to figure out the new

code. There have been continuous changes that have caused us to alter our routines quite a few times. Right now it see ms like the code doesn't really separate the top routines from the rest. But it does reward clean lines and solid execution, which I think is a strength of mine."

He co ntinued, "I added a fe w things here and there to meet the requirements of the new code. More "C" level skills that I can do cleanly."

A Stanford University graduate, Durante is now preparing for his first international competition of 2006 with the American Cup. He said, "To get ready for American Cup I have been doing more routines in the morning, since that is when we are competing. Two days in a row will be tough , but I think I can handle it."

Durante is from Garwood, N.J., and hopes to have lots of family and friends in attendance at the America n Cup in Philadelphia.

SIGN OF THE TIMES "Failure to Warn" is a common complaint of people who are injured by hazards not apparent to them. Whether the complaint is justified or not, such complaints can be minimized by taking special steps to identify hazards within one's responsibility and to warn about those that cannot be removed or fully controlled.

In some instances, this requires face to face instruction (e.g., in sports safety). In others, signage is posted that alerts the person to the hazard in the area and/or warns of the potential for injury (and if feasible advises how to minimize that potential). In fact, signage can also be helpful as reminders for those who have been taught more personally about the hazards and their control.

While we take for granted signage that shows us the exits and restrooms, signage is not merely a matter of information . Its location must be appropriate to the person's ability to see and act on that warning. Its message must be readable and meaningful at that distance as well as relevant to the hazard. Use of standardized symbols and color coding may increase recognizability of both the warning and the hazard. In a nutshell, to be "informed," the person should have been able:

1. To see the warning in time: 2. To understand it as a warning: 3. To understand, reasonably, the nature of the hazard; 4. To have some clue what to do about it (even if only to accept the risk of injury in the course of whatever they were choosing to do).

Other considerations include: 1. Using "Warning ... " when you want their mental attention, and "Danger ... " when their fullest immediate respect is needed.

2. Advising that serious injury can result, including paralysis or death, when such a potential is known.

3. Providing supplemental information, including pictorials, that demonstrate the hazard and/or suggested preventive action.

4. Directing them, if warranted, to someone/somewhere

specific for further information and/or alternative actions.

5. Keeping aware of any recommended or required signage practices for your type of business.

6. Respecting that the best signage and warnings are not a substitute for good loss control procedures.

PARTICIPANT WAIVER/RELEASES AND CONSENT FORM Waiver/ releases and consent forms, properly prepared and obtained, are worth the paper on which they are written.

They do indicate that to participate is a conscious voluntary decision . They have been successful under particular conditions in obtaining summary judgments for the defense.

They are typically required as a condition of sport liability insurance coverage. In explanation: A waiver/ release obtains an acknowledgement that participation involves a risk of injury, even catastrophic injury, and that the participant accepts that risk. By

signing, participants "waive" their right to sue should an injury occur, and thereby "release" the sponsor and its agents from liability for any such injury that should occur. A parent or guardian must do so as well if the participant is a minor. (K&K/ SLE Worldwide suggests that minors sign as well as the parent/ guardian to show an agreement of shared responsibility).

A consent form obtains an acknowledgement and acceptance (again, by parent/ guardian as well if a minor) of whatever expectations and prerogatives are stated by the sponsor as terms and conditions for participating, such as emergency medical treatment, drug testing, transportation provided by the sponsor, and compliance with the laws of the community.

Either, both or neither of these forms may be appropriate in a given context, depending on the following implications for use.

1. Participants (and if minor, their parents) must allowed to read and be required to sign all forms before being given the privilege of participation.

This may be done once annually as a condition of annual membership and access to the sponsor's programs, or as a condition of entering a given event.

Signed forms are to be kept and retrievable "forever."

2. "Participants" also include any non-employee official or volunteer who agrees to assist in the conduct of the program in a preplanned capacity, or who is allowed to enter a restricted area.

3. The form must be readable and understandable the participant and meet certain state and case law expectations. Properly drafted, the release can extend to ordinary negligence.

4. Waivers/releases and consent forms are not substitutes for good loss control procedures and participant accident insurance.

PARTICIPANT LEGAL LIABILITY (PLL) - A SPECIAL COVERAGE Sports people are accustomed to rule books and their essential role in defining before the season begins how the game is to be played.

Insurance people also have their rule book for the same purpose.

Familiarity with that rule book is thereby functionally important to sports and recreation administrators, especially when there is a chance of having no coverage for a major exposure to lawsuits - from the participants in the program.

The first thing your insurance claims manager does when recelVmg a report of injury, whether from the insured organization, athlete, coach, official, fan, or someone's attorney is to see whether the sports sponsor had elected to purchase coverage for that type of claim. Of critical concern often is the special coverage of "Participant Legal Liability" or "PLL," not to be confused with "Participant Accident" or "PA." PA enables the sponsor to help pay on a "no-fault" basis the medical bills for the injuries received by a participant. PLL is when the participant claims the sponsor to be at fault (negligent) for that injury.

The "general liability policy" that all program sponsors purchase, anticipants and covers complaints from patrons, spectators, and passerby who experience injury at the time of a sponsored event.

However, the standard general liability policy provided by insurance carriers who do not customize to the needs of sport, typically excludes coverage when the claimant is a participant. One must therefore request explicit extension of such coverage to PLL for the protection of the organization. Only PLL coverage will respond and defend the sponsoring organization when a complaint is brought by an injured participant.

With as many as half of the lawsuits filed against sponsors of youth and adult recreational sport being on behalf of participants, awareness of this part of the insurance rulebook is essential. Check your own policy, asking for the help of your broker or agent if needed .

Three members of the U.S. OLympic Team for the 2006 OLympic Winter Games in Torino, itaLy, have ties to gymnastics.

Three members of the U.S. Olympic Team for the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy, have ties to gymnastics: Bethany Hart of North Grafton, Mass., who made the U.S. Olympic Women's Bobsled Team; Jana Lindsey of Rapid City, S.D., who will compete in aerial skiing, and Emily Cook of Belmont, Mass., who will compete in freestyle.

Hart, who trained at Giguere Gymnastics, is a former Massachusetts state champion and retired as a Level 9 regional competitor.

She comes from a gymnastics family, with four sisters who were gymnasts and her mom is Giguere Gym nastics' office Bethany Hart Women's Bobsled Team

manager. A member of the 2004-06 World Cup teams, Hart is the alternate brakeman for the U.S. women in bobsled.

She became involved in bobsled in 2001 and competed in the 2002 Olympic Trials and was an alternate for the 2002 Olympic team . A graduate of the University of Connecticut, Hart also competes in the hammer throw and competed in the 2005 World Track and Field Championships and the 2004 Olympic Trials. She is a certified athletic trainer and strength and conditioning coach. She is 26.

Lindsey is the only South Dakotan to make the 2006 U.S. Olympic Team . She competed in gymnastics up to Level 8 at Rapid City Central in Rapid City, South Dakota, before becoming interested in aerial skiing, which she saw on TV when it was a demonstration Jana Lindsey Aerial Skiing

me, how typical it is in our industry that those making the hiring decisions tend to repeat the same poor hiring practices over and over even though they 'should know better: For example, countless times I have seen an intelligent and 'experienced' manager have blatant evidence available to him/her that a candidate has in the past displayed a pattern of poor integ rity yet he/she hires that person anyway. In more rational moments, that same intelligent manager wi ll verba lize to you that such a practice will inevitably bring pain upon the organization. WHY, WHY, WHY do people sabotage themselves? I don't know, but Kids First Sports Center is dedicated to stopping such foolishness . That is why we created our Five Hiring Mantras-to remind us that discipline plays the lion's role in successful hiring. In my considerable BOOT CAMP experience, I have come to the conclusion that most managers know 80-90%

Emilly Cook Freestyle Skiing

Cook, 26, was a diver and gym nast before goi ng to aerials full-time. She trained at Massachusetts Gymnastics Center and was coached by former USA Gymnastics president Bob Colarossi as a preschooler and Class III/ IV gymnast. At age 14 she moved into freestyle. By age 17 she had made the U.S . Freestyle Team and moved to Park City to train fulltime. She was the 2001 aerials champion and a qualifier to the 2002 Olympic Team but was injured prior to the Games and unable to compete. Cook came back strong from her injuries and finished seventh in aerials at the 2005 World Championships. She held four World Cup top-10 finishes in 2005. Her favorite saying is, "Without fear there is no such thing as courage."

Cook was also quoted as saying , "It's scary to do a new trick, but when you do, it's the best feeling in the world ."

ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN AWARDS FOR MEN Each year the Men's Program at USA Gymnastics recognizes the academic achievement of our junior gymnasts through the Academic AllAmerican Award. The junior program is designed to provide a training ground for the development of young athletes. While physical development is obviously important, the program also stresses the development of values, morals and social skills which will remain with these young men all their lives. Encouraging a high level of academic achievement in our young men is as important as encouraging their athletic achievement.

Each year, this award is announced at the Junior Olympic National Championships and presented to those athletes in attendance. The Academic AllAmerican Award is mailed to those athletes who are not able to attend the Junior Olympic National Championships.

A Movement Education and Lesson Plan Development Workshop (MELPD) consists of five enlightening hours of preschool teacher education . This workshop is continuing education of the KAT Program . III. HOPES DIVISION As always, a new year brings new adventures and new expectations and 2006 will be no exception. With the advent of the new Code of Points, we now have an opportunity to introduce a new Optional Elite Level for our young "Hopeful" developing Elite athletes. This division (to be called "Hopes") will better help those athletes and their coaches with their Elite development. Input into this program was gathered from several Elite Committee Members, National Team coaches, Judges, our National Team Coordinator and USAG administration staff.

• TOP General o Any age eligible Hopes division athlete (10 or 11 year old) that scores a 32.00 in compulsories at the US Challenge will automatically qualify to the National TOP Testing.

• TOP Testing o Eliminate Pull-ups o Replace with Cast Handstands • 10 casts (scoring is same as previous Pre Elite Physical Abilities test) o National TOP Testing • Combine Beam Acro (70%) and Beam Dance (30%) into one Beam score • Combine Floor Acro (70%) and Floor Dance (30%) into one Floor score • Beam National TOP Testing - Mats may only be stacked to the level of the bottom of the beam.

• Spotting at National Testing - If an athlete is spotted on a skill at National Testing, the deduction will be up to 1.0 for the spot.

• Weighting of National Testing Scores - 9 year olds - 60% skills - 40% physical abilities - 10 year olds - 70% skills - 30% physical abilities - 11 year olds - 80% skills - 20% physical abilities

The committee agreed that only FIG Brevet Judges will be used to judge Optional competitions at the Elite Level. The committee also agreed that USA Brevet and higher rated judges may be used to judge the Elite Compulsory competitions.

Additional changes in skills will be reviewed at the February National Team Training Camps and a proposal will be put forth to the committee by March 1.

KEVIN TAN JOINS PENN STATE COACHING STAFF After serving as an undergraduate assistant coach for one season, former six-time Penn State All-American Kevin Tan will join the Penn State staff on a full-time basis this season .

"Kevin was an exceptionaL athLete at Penn State and we are excited to have him back-this time as a fuLL-time member of our staff," said head coach Randy Jepson.

A member of Penn State's 2004 NCAA championship team, Tan was the Nittany Lions' first back-to-back NCAA champion on the still rings, earning titles in 2003 and 2004. He aLso earned All-American honors on the paralLel bars (2002) and high bar (2003) during his standout college career. He was a finalist for the Nissen-Emery Award in 2004 and was an all-conference selection, winning both the still rings and parallel bars crowns at the 2004 Big Ten Championships.

Tan also represented the U.S. in the 2005 World Championships on rings.

Whitfield Invitational The 15th Whitfield Invitational was held at the University.of Michigan Jan. 21-22, 2006. This year the Foundation awarded four $3,000 scholarships to gymnasts: Guillermo Alvarez, Geoff Corrigan, Cameron Deer and Kevin Tan. Above is a photo of Tan accepting his trophy from Cathy and Jim Whitifield.

Thus far the Foundation has awarded a total of $120,500 to 47 male gymnasts in memory of their son, Olympic bound Jason Whitfield, who died in a motorcycle accident in 1991.
