Houston, Texas, was the site of the 2005 Trampoline and Tumbling Championships, held July 27-30, Almost 1,500 athletes, representing 180 clubs, competed at this year's JO National Championships, Plus elite competition took place the same weekend, naming national champions in trampoline, tumbling, double mini and synchronized trampoline.

The question of "Who' s Next?" has been answered . The recent Visa Championships in Indianapolis helped us identify our next great generation of u.s. gymnasts in many age groups and disciplines. Along with the USA Gymnastics National Congress and Trade Show, the week was filled with many highlights and memories.

U.S. athletes are rising to meet the challenge, showcasing great depth and talent. Congratulations to all of the athletes and coaches, whose hard work and preparation were apparent on the competition floor.

The Visa Championships also provided an opportunity to celebrate the success of our Athens Olympic Team. All 19 athletes made the trip to Indianapolis to relive their historic accomplishments and be recognized by the entire gymnastics community. This occasion served as a passing of the torch to the next generation who has dreams of achieving similar levels of success.

Onward to The Netherlands, Australia and Azerbaijan, where the next benchmarks for our elite athletes will be set at the respective World Championships. The year following the Olympic Games always serves as a time of transition, and this year's World Championships will unveil the progress of the entire world. Just like in the United States, many other countries are in transition, especially with the uncertainty surrounding the impact of the new FIG Code of Points. We are confident that our athletes and coaches will adapt to the ever-changing landscape and provide many great moments as we travel the road to Beijing.

Please join me in celebrating the success of all our athletes and welcoming our new National Teams.

As USA Gymnastics went to press, Hurricane Katrina landed on the Gulf Coast, leaving devastation in her wake. On behalf of the entire gymnastics community, USA Gymnastics extends its hopes and prayers to all of those affected by Hurricane Katrina. Within the most heavily affected states of Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Florida, the federation has more than 100 registered clubs. As reports on the devastation have become more detailed, the outpouring of support and offers of assistance from within the gymnastics family has already begun. To facilitate those in need and those who want to assist, USA Gymnastics has launched a password-protected message board area for the gymnastics community to allow members in need to post what assistance they could use, as well as for those who have services or other types of assistance to offer. A list of clubs in the affected areas will also be available for reference. For more information, check www.usa-gymnastics.org.

odd Thornton of Team Chevron in Houston, Texas, won his first national all-around title at the 2005 Visa Championships held in Indianapolis, Ind., Aug. 10-13.

Thornton, who led after the first day of competition, again earned the night's highest all-around score, 54.000, for a combined all-around total of 106.900 points.

Thornton, who was the 2001 world team alternate, earned an automatic 2005 World Championships Team berth. He was more than one full point ahead of secondplace competitor David Sender from Stanford.

"This is the pinnacle of my career right now," said Thornton, who finished fourth last year. "It's the best thing I've done yet."

Stanford's Sender, who is from Arlington Heights, Ill., finished second, staying consistent throughout the entire event. Sender hit clean routines on parallel bars and high bar before putting up a 9.075 on floor in the final rotation to clinch second place, with a score of 105.50. In 2004, Sender finished 14th in the all-around and took the vault title. This year Sender won silver medals on both floor and vault.

''I'm still in a little bit of disbelief," Sender said. "It was pretty exciting to go out there and do as well as I did."

David Durante of Team Chevron finished third with 105.200 points. Durante, whose hometown is Garwood, N.J., said, "I have always come in as more of the underdog, and this time was my chance to show that I belong up top. Finishing in the top three is nice, but it is not what I wanted. This makes me want to work even harder. I am going to get back into the gym and prove myself at the world camp."

Event champions included Guillermo Alvarez of Denver, Colo./Team Chevron, on floor; Yewki Tomita of Tucson, Ariz./Team Chevron, on pommel horse; Sean Golden of Houston, Texas/Houston Gymnastics Academy, on rings and vault; D.J. Bucher of Mason, Ohio/The Ohio State University, on parallel bars; and Justin Spring of Burke, Va./University of Illinois, on high bar.

In addition to Thornton and Sender, six athletes were named to

the 2005 U.S. National Team at the conclusion of the competition: Golden, Spring, Durante, Alvarez, Tomita and Joseph Hagerty of Albuquerque, N.M. / Team Chevron. Six additional athletes were selected by the Men's Program Committee: Jonathan Horton, Alexander Artemev, D.J. Bucher, Jason Gatson, Brett McClure, Raj Bhavsar, and Jamie Henderson.

Other event medalists were Alvarez, silver on pommel horse; Penn State's Kevin Tan, silver on rings and Team Chevron's Eric LaMorte the bronze; Spring, bronze on vault; Hagerty, silver on parallel bars, University of Oklahoma's Taqiy Abdullah, bronze; and Tomita silver on high bar.

yson Bunthuwong, 18, of EI Cerrito, Calif., and Golden Bear Gymnastics, and Tim Gentry, 16, of Plano, Texas, and World Olympic Gymnastics Academy, won the junior men's all-around titles in the 16-18 and 14-15 divisions, respectively.

Bunthuwong, the defending junior national champion, was in seventh place after the second of six rotations, but strong efforts on vault and parallel bars moved him into the lead. His all-around score of 50.350 is seven-tenths ahead of Seung Tai Lee of Sorrento, Fla., and trainIDg at Orlando Metro Gymnastics, who finished second all-around with a score of 49.650 points. Jason Chu of Bellflower, Calif., and SCATS Gymnastics, was third with 48.950.

"I think I had a pretty good meet, but overall it wasn't perfect," Bunthuwong said.

Bunthuwong's 8.300 on parallel bars was good for the junior event title. He also won pommel horse with an 8.800. Lee won rings, while Cole Storer of Plano, Texas/World Olympic Gymnastics Academy, won floor and vault. Joe Catrambone of Deptford, N.J. / Temple Boys Gymnastics, won high bar.

Other event medalists in the 16-18 year old division were: Floor-Premier's Jake Bateman, and Cypress' Andre Berry, third. Pommel Horse-SCATS Jason Chu, second and Mass Gymnastics Center Mel Anton Santander, third. Rings-Surgent's Ralph Rosso, second and Indy School's Cameron Deer, third. Vault-Bateman, second and Berry, third. parallel bars-Lee, second and 5280 Gym's Lucas Hughes, third. High bar- West Side's Aaron Fortunato, second and Bunthuwong, third.

In addition to Bunthuwong, Lee and Chu, other national team members include: Rosso, Storer, Christopher Lung of Massachusetts Gymnastics Center and Berry. Bryan Del Castillo was also added to the team.

In the 14-15 age category, Gentry won the all-around over teammate Philip Onorato, scoring 49.349 to 49.050 in the all-around.

"There's rivalry, but it's not bitter," Gentry said, whose third teammate Storer took fourth in the 16-18 division. "We're all good friends."

Onorato earned three event titles, the most of any athlete, on floor, rings and vault, while Gentry won high bar. Miguel Pineda of Hilliard, Ohio / Hocking Valley Gymnastics, won pommel horse. Chris Cameron of Winter Haven, Fla./Florida Flips Gymnastics, won parallel bars.

Other event medalists in the 14-15 year old division were: Floor-Cal Sports Center Josh Dixon, second and Gentry, third. Pommel HorseKyle Bunthuwong, second and Edward Mesa of Universal, third.

Rings-Hocking Valley's Miguel Pineda, second and Gentry, third.

That question began to be answered during the prelims and finals of the Visa Championships. Nastia Liukin overcame adversity during day one of competition to win the allaround title at the 2005 Visa Championships, held Aug. 10-13 in Indianapolis.

Liukin, who turns 16 this October, missed a foot on her round off triple full beam dismount during the first day of competition and finished the day in third all-around, behind Chellsie Memmel and Jana Bieger. She came back strong during finals to make up a deficit of more than eight-tenths of a point to win the all-around title.

"It was important to come back and show people that I'm strong," Liukin said. ''I'm a fighter and I won't give up."

Liukin moved into second place after the first rotation during finals. Her intricate uneven bars routine with nearperfect handstand positions and a high layout Gienger scored 9.766. On beam, Liukin corrected the errors she made during prelims to score 9.800-more than a full point higher than her prelim score. Liukin took a commanding lead at the halfway point, finishing with 9.600 on floor and 9.483 on vault. She finished the competition with a total score of 38.649. In addition to the all-around, Liukin won gold on bars and beam and silver on floor.

Prelim leader Memmel of M&M Gyrrmastics in West Allis, Wis., finished second overall with a score of 75.797. Memmel had a mistake during beam finals when she fell on her front with a half twist. Memmel was competing in only her second major all-around competition since February 2004 when a foot injury sidelined her through much of last year.

Memmel said, "To take second is still a really great finish in the all-around." A 2004 Olympic alternate and 2003 World Champion on bars, Memmel added, "I guess it shows that you can't make any mistakes. I made a mistake and that's what happened."

Memmel, 17, earned identical scores of 9.666 on bars during both days of competition to win silver. She also earned the silver on beam and bronze on floor.

Bieger of Boca Twisters Gymnastics finished third with 74.680 points. She also was third on vault and bars. Bieger, who will turn 16 this November, was second all-around after prelims but a fall on beam during finals dropped her to third in the overall rankings . Bieger showed innovative skills and power on each event.

Alicia Sacramone of Brestyan' s Gyrrmastics in Ashland, Mass., won vault and floor. Sacramone's 9.900 on floor was the first score of 9.900 or better in the women's division of a u.s. nationals since 1996. Sacramone, 18, was fourth after the first day of competition but moved up-te-third after- finals. In aElElition to her two medals on vault and floor, she won the bronze medal on beam.

In addition to Liukin, Memmel, Bieger, and Sacramone, eight other athletes were named to the senior national team: Kassi Price, Plantation, Fla. / Orlando Metro; Kristina COrrUorte, Burr Ridge, ill. / illinois Gymnastics Institute; Annie DiLuzio, Folsom, Calif./Byers Gymnastics Center; Kayla Hoffman, Union, N.J. / Rebound Gymnastics; Sarah Shire, Sweet Springs, Mo. / Great American Gymnastic Express; Jacquelyn Johnson, Westchester, Ohio / Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy; Brittani McCullough, Corona, Calif. / Southern California Elite Gymnastics Academy; and Hilary Mauro, Westchester, Ohio / Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy.

Other event medalists include DiLuzio, who took second on vault, and Susan Jackson from Brown's, who grabbed the bronze.

atasha Kelley, 15, of Brown's Gymnastics in Houston, Texas, won the junior all-around title. Bianca Flohr, 14, of Flytz in Ohio finished second in a tightly contested meet which saw Flohr and Kelley exchange the lead several times.

By winning, Kelley maintained her lead from prelim competition.

She hit a double-twisting Yurchenko in the first rotation on vault for 9.283 and earned a 9.050 on bars in the second rotation. Going into beam, Kelley was in second, but surpassed Flohr, who was leading by less than two-tenths of a point, with an event-high of 9.533 on beam. Kelley'S difficult beam routine was awarded a start value of 10.0 for the second day in a row, the only perfect start value of the junior event. With a slim lead going into the fourth rotation, Kelley, posted another event-high, 9.450, on floor to clinch the all-around title with a 74.681.

"I try not to look at the scoreboard," said Kelley, who missed the senior age cut-off by one day. "I knew it was neck and neck at the end."

Flohr remained in second place with 74.580 points, more than a tenth behind Kelley. Her high scores came on bars, 9.400, and floor, 9.416. Flohr was sixth in the all-around and second on bars at the 2003 and 2004 nationals.

"I like competitions," Flohr said. " It gets me excited when there is a big crowd, so 1 liked it."

Shayla Worley of Orlando Metro Gymnastics finished third in the overall rankings with 73.515 points. Worley, 14, had problems on bars during day one of competition but climbed from fifth to third with the highest all-around score for the final day.

Three athletes were named event champions for the junior women: Samantha Peszek, 13, from Deveau's School of Gymnastics in Fishers, Indiana, won vault for her double twisting Yurchenko.

Flohr, who is from Creston, Ohio, won bars; and Kelley won two titles, beam and floor.

Other event medalists were: Amber Trani from Parkettes who took second on vault, and Kelley finished third . Shantessa Pama of Gym Max earned the silver medal on bars and Kelley won bronze. On beam, Worley was second and Flohr was third. Peszek grabbed the silver medal on floor while Flohr won bronze.

Ashley Priess of Cincinnati Gymnastics and Brittney Ranzy of Hill's Gymnastics scra tched from the competition due to injuries.

After finishing in the runner-up spot for the last four years, Olga Karmansky, 19, captured the all-around gold medal at the rhythmic competition of the 2005 Visa Championships with a score of 56.725.

Karmansky, who is coached by Lucy Kerznerman at Nova Athletics in Brooklyn, N .Y., said, "I was pretty happy with all four events. I had two small drops with the clubs, but I think I can fix that for World's and compete perfectly there."

Sixteen-year-old Lisa Wang of Buffalo Grove, IlL, and Rhythmic Gems, took second with a score of 55.575. Wang is coached by Lana Lashoff.

Aline Bakchajian, also 16, of Woodland Hills, Calif. and Hollywood Academy, took third with a score of 52.650. Bakchajian is coached by Larisa Nikitina.

The top eigh t made the National Team and are shown below.

During event finals, Karmansky won gold medals in rope, ball and ribbon. "I was a little tired from the first day when I gave it all that I had.

Now, I'm looking forward to the World Training Camp in California," Karmansky said.

Wang earned silver medals in rope and ribbon and Karmansky took silver in clubs.

Stacker placed third in rope, clubs and ribbon, and Bakchajian took third in ball.

In the junior all-around division, 13-year-old Rachel Marmer of Los

Angeles, Calif., won her third straight all-around national title. Marmer trains at Hollywood Academy with Nikitina.

Marmer said, "It felt really good to win the all-around again. I was confident going into the competition."

The top eight made the Naional team and are shown below.

Julie Zetlin, 15, of Bethesda, Md., finished second and Kristian Brooks, 15, of Corunna, Mich., took third. Zetlin trains at Rhythmflex with her coach Olga Kutuzonva while Brooks trains at Sports Club of Novi with her coach Jennifer Buckley.

Zetlin came back during event finals to win all four event titles. She said, "It was a really great experience. I was just going out there to have fun. I was trying not to get nervous. I wanted to perform and show everyone that I could be first."

Marmer took second in all four events while Marlee Shape took third in rope and ribbon, Agyeman earned bronze in clubs and Brooks earned bronze in

he 2005 Acrobatic Gymnastics Team Trials added to the excitement of the Visa Championships. Acrobatic athletes joined the top athletes in other disciplines to fight for the honor of making the National Team. Team Trials served as the second of two selection competitions for the Acrobatic Gymnastics National Team. The two-day competition was held at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Ind., from Aug. 10-13.

At the Elite level, the top competitors in Men's Pair, Julian Amaro and Tyler Spray; Mixed Pair Michael Rodrigues and Clare Brunson; and Women's Group Mariah Henninger, Kelly Topp & Angela Hatch continued to impress the audience and judges, winning their respective events and earning spots on the Senior National Team. Mixed Pair Andre Solodar and Xiau-Ling Wee also had a strong performance to make the team.

The Junior Elite Women's Group of Cassidy Dolstra, Carleen daSilva and Allysha Kidd finished on top at team trials, just as they had at national championships, to claim a spot on the Junior National Team.

The competition was also open to pair / groups at Levels 8-10. National Team Trials provided additional national-level competition experience for these athletes.

Houston, Texas was the site of the recent 2005 Trampoline & Tumbling U.S. Championships, held July 27-30. Highlighting the event was the Senior Elite competition, with athletes vying for national titles, as well as a place on the World Championships team. In men's trampoline Chris Estrada (Lafayette, La.) took top honors, scoring 103.60, while Alaina Hebert (Broussard, La.) took first in women's trampoline with a score of 100.30.

Men's tumbling saw Casey Finley (Lee's Summit, Mo.) repeat as National Champion when he scored 142.10 overall. Finley was the only 2004 National Champion to reclaim his title. Yuliya Hall (Idaho Falls, Idaho), who recently won the World Cup event in Belgium, was named National Champion in women's tumbling. In the hotly contested men's double mini event, Keith Douglas (Kentwood, Mich.) came out on top with a score of 147.40. In women's double mini, Ashlynn Sundvold (Lee's Summit, Mo.) took the gold with a score of 136.40.

In synchronized trampoline, Estrada paired with Ryan Weston (Chubbuck, Idaho) to take the men's title with a score of 103.10, while the women's title went to Hebert and partner Jenny Wescott (Lafayette, La.), who scored 91.90. Estrada and Weston went on to take the silver medal at the World Cup event in Belgium.

Junior Elite National Champions were also crowned in Houston, with Steven Gluckstein (Atlantic Highlands, N .J.) reclaiming his 2004 junior men's trampoline title with a score of 99.00 and Nani Vercruyssen (Honolulu, Hawaii) taking gold in the junior women's division with a score of 94.20. In junior men's tumbling, Cory Bickel (Lee's Summit, Mo.) took first, scoring 125.60, while Dacyn Caudell (Independence, Mo.) scored 127.70 to take the junior women's title. Matt Moniz (Honolulu, Hawaii) took first in junior men's double mini by scoring 139.60 and Kad Barry (San Diego, Calif.) took the women's junior title with a score of 136.40. Champions in junior synchronized trampoline are Kevin Heger / Andrew Muzzarelli (Rockford, Ill.) and Jand Karvas / Kelsie Porter (Lubbock, Texas), with scores of 122.00 and 110.80, respectively.

he largest-ever Acrobatic Gymnastics National Championships began and ended on a high note. Held July 22-28 in Louisville, Ky., this year's Acro nationals exhibited local flair, great performances and inaugural initiatives.

More than 600 athletes participated in acrobatic gymnastics competition at Levels 5 through 10 and elite at the Kentucky International Convention Center. It was a full week of competition that began with a special performance of "Call to the Post" played

by Steve Buttleman, well-known Kentucky Derby bugler, during the Opening Ceremony. Strong competition highlighted the middle of the week. The event concluded with another splash, the selection of the first-ever Junior OlympiC National Team.

The City of Louisville was a great host for the event. The participants and their families enjoyed the ease and convenience of the city, as well as the entertainment and activities that were available.

The National Championships crowns the top u.s. athletes in the discipline of acrobatic gymnastics. This year's elite national champions are: Men's Pair - Julian Amaro and Tyler Spray; Mixed Pair - Michael Rodrigues and Clare Brunson; Women's Group - Mariah Henninger, Kelly Topp and Angela Hatch; and Men's Group - Jake Kanavel, Andre Solodar, Kevin Smith and Lukas Martincik. National champions were also crowned at the Jr. Elite level, as well as Levels 5-10. lmost 1,500 athletes, representing 180 clubs, competed at the Trampoline & Tumbling J.o. National Championships in Houston, Texas, July 27-Aug. 3. The annual event names national champions in individual trampoline, power tumbling and double mini trampoline for Levels 5-10 and in synchronized trampoline for Level 10 only. The athletes range in age from 6 and Under to 17 and Over.

The athletes assembled for the Grand March of Teams on July 31, a highlight of the event each year. Following the Grand March, the regions face d off in the 4th Annual Regional All-Stars competition. Each region is represented by the Level 10 regional champions in each age group and diScipline. Region 4 took the overall grand champion team award and also dominated the event team awards, winning both Boys' and Girls' Double Mini and Trampoline. Region 3 won Girls' and Boys' Tumbling.

CDLLEDIATE CDBREB The NACGC/W hopes that this issue of the magazine finds you all well-rested and ready for another exciting competitive season. In this issue we would like to update you on two areas-the recruiting calendar and changes that will take place in the collegiate program this year.

The recruiting calendar seems to be shifting a bit earlier every year and it becomes more important that prospective student-athletes interested in being recruited begin actively promoting themselves and preparing for recruiting earlier than in the past. Many gymnasts made commitments this year before their junior year had even ended and before they had an opportunity to make any official visits (these can't happen until you start your senior year of high school)! This means that they had been communicating with potential coaches all during their junior year, sending video tapes, taking standardized admissions tests (SAT or ACT), conducting unofficial visits to campuses (there are no restrictions on visits when the prospect pays all expenses), and doing all the research necessary to making their decision very early in the process. This also means that college coaches have begun identifying prospects at the end of their sophomore years in order to begin communicating in earnest as soon as possible.

As a new school year and new season start there are some interesting changes to the collegiate program. NCAA women's gymnastics follows the Level 10 Junior Olympic code in general and with a

new JO code taking effect this year we have reviewed those rules and the needs of NCAA gymnasts. Some things will not look very different-we will use the same vault table as last season and college gymnasts will still only get one vault-and many of the new JO rules will be directly applied-the composition deductions and requirements are almost identical. However, we have changed the values of a number of skills (e.g. a Healy without a blind change will still be a D, layouts on beam are still Ds, and a number of leaps and jumps have higher values).

The most dramatic changes for this year include a reduction in special requirement values (college will use .2 instead of the .5 in JO), the addition of unsportsmanlike conduct deductions for both gymnasts and coaches, and a process for video review during regular season meets. The video review will allow coaches only to inquire about the performance or nonperformance of a particular skill, combination of skills or neutral deductions (i.e., out of bounds). Each team will be allowed just one review per meet and there will be a .3 deduction from the team score for a review that is not overturned.

The U.S. Classic took place in Virginia Beach, Va., and was hosted by Excalibur Gynmastics, July 22-24. The event served as a qualifier to the Vi sa Championships. Athle tes w ith as tericks by their name were already qualified to the Visa Championships .

Hall wins gold at Trampoline and Tumbling World Cup in Belgium

Yuliya Hall of Idaho Falls, Idaho, won a gold medal in women's tumbling at the Trampoline and Tumbling World Cup in Belgium, Aug. 5-6. Ryan Weston of Chubbuck, Idaho, and Chris Estrada of Lafayette, La., earned a silver medal in synchronized trampoline. Alaina Hebert of Broussard, La., also performed well, finishing eighth in women' s trampoline.

Hebert recently won the 2005 women' s trampoline National Championship in Houston, Texas.

Brines5a Link, 8, won the Level 4 SW Washington Sectional Championships with a score of 37.325. She also placed first on bars with a 9.45 and first on vault with a 9.55. Brines5a trains in Tacoma, Wash., at Mercy Gymnastics and is coached by Bethany Link, Kellie Bauman and Kristy Willis.

Brandon Valdes, 9, trains at U.S. Gymnastics in Englewood, NJ., and was the Regional All-Around gold medalist in 2004-05.

Aline Bakchajian, 17, won the bronze medal in the all-around at the 2005 Visa Championships for Rhythmic Gymnastics. Aline is from Woodland Hills.

Sisters Kennedy and Katherine Prentice both competed LevelS in 2005 with Wright's American Gymnastics in Indiana. At their state meet Kennedy, 10, took first all-around and won every event.

Katherine, 9, placed fifth all-around and eamed third on vault. They're coached by Larry Rigney and Terri Oswalt.

Taylor Bolender of Wadsworth, Ohio, is an l l -year-old Level 7 who trains at Flytz USA in Cuyahoga Falls. Taylor is coached by Terry Gray, Dawn Shaffer and Butch Risma. Taylor won the Level 7 2005 Ohio State Championships with an all-around score of 37.400 and won bars with a 9.50. She also placed second on beam with a 9.525 and second on floor with a 9.375.
