SA GYMNASTICS Message Dear Members, Since the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, the men's team has been one of only three teams to always qualify to the team finals in World and Olympic competition. At the 2001 World Championships in Ghent, Belgium, the men's team won the silver medal. However, there is still a definite feeling by the athletes and coaches that they must prove themselves at the international level. Our men are hungry, motivated and they feel that it is time to write a new chapter in the book on international men's gymnastics. Everyone is looking forward to Anaheim in 2003 and Athens in 2004. I'm not going to make predictions, but our guys are looking great. If the level of excitement and Ron Galimore motivation I experienced at the last senior national team camp is any indication of how our team is going to do in Anaheim, then all I can say to the rest of the World is look out! Of course we will have Senior Director stiff competition from several teams like China, Russia, Romania, Ukraine, Belarus, France and Japan Men's Program Uust to name a few), but I believe that our gymnasts and coaches are up for the challenge and will settle for nothing less than success in Anaheim and Athens. Much of the credit for our team's cohesiveness should go to our National Team Coordinato r, Ron Brant who has worked very hard in pulling all of our athletes and coaches together on the same page. The coaches and athletes are all moving in the same direction and have worked hard at setting the "bar" high enough to win. I can't say enough about the effort being made. Our program as a whole could not be healthier. Vice Chairman for Men , Yoichi Tomita, has provided outstanding leade rship to our program . He has offered the right amount of passion combined with a no nonsense approach to keep us moving in the right direction . As a matter of fact, all of our committees and volunteers have been doing a great job in their leadership role and the direction they are charting for men's gymnastics in the U.S. Members of our Men's Program Committee, Junior Olympic Program Committee, Age Group Competition Committee, Junior National Coaching staff and ou r State Chairmen have worked ha rd to put the right programs in place, increase communication to athletes, coaches and judges across the country and to make everyone feel a part of the process. I say "thank you" to all of them and state that the success experienced by our athletes this year and next could not be possible without their selfless efforts throughout the year. The men's participation numbers are continuing to grow and this was evident at the recent Men's Junior Olympic National Championship held in Savannah, Georgia with over 650 boys entered in the competition. Many thanks go to the Georgia Gymnastics Judges Association, Nancy Kirksey, Joe Strank and staff member Bo Morris for producing an outstanding Junior Olympic National Championships. Other areas of our junior program continue to flourish with the guidance of our Junior National Team Coordinator, Dennis McIntyre. Great junior athletes are continuing to be produced through our Future Stars Program and members of our Junior Elite National Teams are continuing to make successful transitions into our senior program. Of course we still have serious issues that we must address. Coaches' education and saving our collegiate programs are very high priorities for us. While we feel that good progress has been made in these areas, we also feel that we have only just begun to fight the battle. We have many new educational programs just around the corner and we are working to partner with the U.S. Olympic Committee to find ways to increase the value of Olympic Sports at the collegiate level. The next three months leading up to the World Championships in Anaheim and the next 15 months leading up to the Olympic Games in Athens will be very exciting as attention shifts to our top gymnasts and coaches. Success fo r our teams will mean success for all of our programs and clubs across the country. Be ready to support our teams in Anaheim and Athens as our gymnasts compete to take the United States to new levels of respect in our sport. The time is right!

The

No Fear

Revolution

A New Way of Looking at An Old Beast. Alison Arnold Ph.D.

creates fear, frustration, doubt, and negativity. The opposite is aLso true. Tight mind creates fearLessness, positivity, confidence, and focus. So it's simpLe, just as you teach - how to tighten their bodies through correction and driLLs, do the same with the mind. Teach athLetes how to tighten their minds through mentaL corrections and driLLs. Change the way you think about fear by simpLy seeing it as Loose mind.

Fear is simply "Ioose mind". You correct loose bocIy all the time. You wouLd never Let an athLete go for more than one turn with bent knees or a Loose core. So why is it different for the mind? Begin to correct Loose mind just as you wouLd any body position. Correct it non-emotionaLLy. Whenever you see fear, frustration or overthinking, simpLy draw your athLete's attention to Loose mind with a simpLe comment. Say something Like, "your mind seems Loose, what are you thinking?", or "I see fear is creeping in, just focus on the correction over and over." Teach your athLetes to identify Loose mind in themseLves. Without awareness, making a correction is virtually impossibLe. Teach them to Listen to what they are saying to themseLves in their heads. Then, teach them to "Lock it down" by either saying cue words, corrections, or positive seLf statements.

Remember, when the mind is Loose, negative thoughts have a free for aLl. They take any opportunity to sneak in and create fear. So how can you keep the mind tight? How can you "Lock it down"? The foLLowing is a List of drills you can do to heLp athLetes anchor the mind. "Anchoring" keeps the mind tight, in proper aLignment, so that negative thoughts cannot enter Leading to fear and doubt.

Anchors for loose minds Mental Choreography Irs a coach's biggest nighhnare. One day she or he can do the skill, the next day they can't. Or, your athLete does it perfectLy with spot, in the pit, or onto mats. But when they attempt to do it by themseLves, all you get is BALKING! Fear. You hate it. It can be paraLyzing. It can make even the

most patient coach want to check him or herseLf into the psych ward. This article wiLL heLp you Look at fear in a totally new way. A way so different, so revoLutionary, you may just want to write me a thank you note. So ...

Are you ready to revolutionize the way you are looking at fear? You work all day in the gym on body positions. You do drill after drill to be sure that their bodies are in perfect aLignment. You taLk at Length to each of your athLetes of the importance of keeping a tight body. You know fuLL weLL that gymnastics without aLignment is Like trying to fit back into a Leotard when you're 37 years oLd. Not pretty. But what about the mind? The mind is a thought factory, creating thought after thought after thought. A mind out of controL is the same as a body out of controL; aLL over the pLace, and mostLy in pLaces where it doesn't beLong. Loose mind

.--16-=-------------------{(

The mind is simply another part of the bocIy. In sport, you spend countLess hours training your body for proper position, aLignment, and technique. The mind must aLso remain in proper aLignment in order to achieve success. One of the most important skills for any gymnast is the abiLity to pull one's mind back into proper position when it goes off course. MentaL choreography is the bLinders for the mind. It keeps the mind tight and provides a resting pLace when it goes off course. We know that the biggest cause of poor performance is out of controL thinking. Keeping the monkey-mind occupied and "out of troubLe" is key. Using mentaL choreography enabLes the mind to stay focused, centered, and on track.

MentaL Choreography words are verbaL cues, words used to keep the mind tight during performance. These words are used before, during, and after performance, not onLy during difficuLt areas of routines, but presentation areas as well. When these words are done during every routine, or skiLL, the words serve as a resting pLace for the mind. This is the secret gift of mentaL choreography. Once it becomes second nature and automatic, it will carry you through routines during the difficuLt or trying times. The words wiLL allow the mind to become "non-thinking," thus in the zone. The zone is the uLtimate "tight mind."

TEe H H IOU E • JUNE 2003

)1----------------

There are three types of MC thoughts to give an athlete as mental cues when he or she is afraid: Technical Statements: Statements or corrections ("lift", "tight", "shoulders square") Energy Statements: Statements that bring energy up or down ("go!", "push here!", and "relax" "breathe") Confidence Statements: Statements that encourage and build trust (i .e. "I can do it", 'Tve done it before") Have your athletes focus on these cue words to lock down the mind and keep it tight.

Anchor phrases Anchor phrases are any phrases or series of actions that help tighten the mind. The mind must be anchored strong and steady in order to stay on course in the turbulence of negative thinking. Just as a gymnast pulls their body back to proper ~~~~:===~~:::J position to make a technical correction, they can pull their mind back the same way by using an anchor. An anchor is a series of thoughts or actions that will pull your mind back to perfect mental position. An anchor is a series of strong

"come-backs" to those negative thoughts keeping an athlete in fear and doubt. Anchors help your athletes return to focus, fearlessness, and doubtlessness. Examples of strong anchors include: "breathe, stay on course, 1 can do this", "breathe, tight mind, don't go there", or "relax, keep it cool, it's no big deaL" Each anchor statement should include breathing and positive self-talk. The anchor should break the downward spiral of frustration, fear, or nervousness, and get your athletes mind back on course. Whenever you notice loose mind, help your athletes pull it back by telling them to "go get a drink, and use their anchor", or "do some drills and use your mental anchor", or simply, "anchor your mind".

as a lack of confidence. Even if the athlete has done the skill hundreds of times, if they are fearful, then they are lacking in confidence. Remember, fear isn't always rational. As you see fearful behavior, especially balking, help the athlete have success by going back to the last successful drill. Build up the bank again before pushing them to do the skill. It's important to note that the mind seems to focus on failures more than successes. A gymnast can successfully perform a skill over and over again, just to have all of that shattered by a scary stop in the middle of it.

Watch your Language! Your language is essential in creating the ahnosphere in your gym. Are you creating an atmosphere of fear, or one of confidence? What we put energy into grows bigger. Putting energy into fear, even overcoming it, fuels the fear beast. Use language with your athletes that changes the way they view fear in themselves and their teammates. The following are some phrases to use in order to build confidence and take the focus off of fear. Irs ok, we ;ust need to build up your confidence. Tight mind, I can see your fear beast coming up. Go back and do some drills. Let's build up your bank.

Check your thoughts. You may have some loose mind. Anchor your mind. Focus on the correction and put it on automatic. Don't think about anything but this correction. Say it over and over again in your mind. Walk through the skill saying your key words. Your mind is getting you into trouble. Focus on this correction. Remember, look at fear as simply loose mind. It can be corrected, there are drills for it. Correct loose mind quickly and easily before you lose yours! _

The Confidence Bank For most athletes, fear is simply a deficit in confidence. Look at the mind as a confidence bank. When positive deposits go up, the mind feels an abundance of confidence. When there is a deficit in the confidence account, the mind feels fear and worry. Help your athletes have a wealth of confidence by building up their accounts. An account is built by success. Even successful drills can make the bank overflow. See fear -

Pricing Your Team-Pari II In Part, 1 I sought to make a case for the need to UNDERSTAND the parents' perspective that team is expensive and therefore the need to SELL the idea that team is a BARGAIN. Here, I will sketch out one way to calculate a TRUE break-even on your team. Most Gym Club owners believe that if team tuition pays for coaching wage that they are breaking even or at least close to it. Surprise!: often, 'overhead' exceeds coaching wage. The below example is a 'sa mpling' of what is actually happening out in the real world of progressive Gym Clubs having high level optional athletes in 2003. The example assumes only one venue-a gymnastics venue-and a teaching ratio of B:1. If you are a true MVP (multiple venues), you must first find the gymnastics venue's share of the total. 1. Calculate YEARLY OVERHEAD. Using your year end P&L statement, tally ALL of your business expenses-facility costs, admin wage, insurances, interest, education ... the works*-EXCEPT, coaching wage. Real life example: $275,000 yearly overhead.

a multiplier appropriate for your yearly up/ down cycle. Real life example: 100,000 st.hr. per year. 3. Calculate OVERHEAD/STUDENT/HOUR: Divide #1 by #2. $275,000 -;- 100,000st.hr. = $2.75/st./hr. Remember, coaching wage has NOT yet been included. 4. Calculate GROUP OVERHEAD/HOUR. Multiply #3 X B students.

$2.75/st.jhr. X Bst.

=

$22.00/hr. group overhead.

5. From internal payroll records calculate your AVERAGE HOURLY COACHING WAGE. Don't forget to add in ALL benefits not previously

considered including Fed and state P/ R taxes, W/C, FICA, health, dental, vacation, 401K, employee discounts, etc. A good multiple for a progressive Ohio club is +24%. $15.00/hr. + 24% = $lB.60/hr average coachi ng wage. 6. Calculate TOTAL GROUP COST PER HOUR. Add #4 and #5.

$22.00/hr. + $lB.60/hr.

=

$40.60/hr. total group cost.

2. Calculate YEARLY STUDENT HOURS. Using enrollment data,

program by program, add together: (rec. students X 1 hour) + (level 4 X no . of training hours/wk) + (level 5 X no. of training hours/wk) + etc. Don't forget to include preschool, cheer, tumbling, birthday parties-ALL students who use the gymnastics venue. This sum is a weekly figure and must be converted to YEARLY STUDENT HOURS by

7. Calculate BREAK-EVEN PER GYMNAST PER HOUR. Divide #6 by #B. $40.60/hr. -;- Bst = $5.0B/st./hr. as a true break-even . It is not too difficult to achieve a $5/hr tuition for entry level

athletes, but very difficult at an optional level. It is Queen City's (continued on page 28)

How to Improve Technique by Using

Bungee Rope Devie on Ri ngs

By Dmitry Kolodyazhny and Juris Aleksejevs

ave you ever wondered how to make learning swings and giants on rings more comfortable for gymnasts? Have you ever observed a situation where someone is learning swings or giants and they lose resistance on the rings on the downward drop? They may experience a jerk or snap at the bottom of a swing or giant that very often causes back injuries along with fear and discomfort. This is an important issue for many gymnasts. Learning giants or dismounts on the rings can be difficult because of the fear of peeling off the rings or injury. At USA Gymnastics World in Bountiful, Utah, we have found a solution to this problem by using a bungee rope device. This device has been made and used by our coaching staff for tea chi ng swi ngs, backward and front giants, dismounts and other skills on the rings. It has also been used as a helping tool in teaching acrobatic skills such as: back-handsprings, "whip," backward tucked, piked or layout salto, front handspring, "bounder," and front salto tucked or piked. This device has proven to be very valuable and useful in helping students to learn skills on the rings and floor faster and more efficiently.

H

The device consists of: two bungee ropes, a belt, and two metal fasteners or karabiners (See picture) . As a bungee rope, we use Theraband resistance tubes. There are several varieties depending on the tube resistance. We use the green style of tubing mostly, which is a heavy resistance type for the rings, and the blue style, which is an extra heavy resistance type for teaching acrobatic skills. The tubing comes in 25 feet lengths. We cut the tubing in half and use the folded halves for the bungee ropes. We use Spring Link karabiners and AAI brand of belt. It doesn't matter what brands you use, as long as they are good quality and serve the purpose.

BENEFITS Some of the benefits for using the bungee rope device are as follows: .....-=-1-=-2--- -- -- - ----------1(

1. It eliminates the need for manual spotting and allows the coach to observe the skill from a distance. With the traditional method where the coach is personally spotting a gymnast, he/she is unable to see the big picture as well as all details, because the coach must stand so close to the gymnast. By using a bungee rope, the coach is able to analyze the exercise by observing it from a position where he/she can see every detail and the gymnast is able to complete his skill safely. The coach can then make a thorough technical analysis of the student's skill.

2. It serves as a good spotting tool. For example, when doing a giant, bungee rope reduces the speed of the drop or bail and gives additional momentum and speed on the rise. On the dismounts, it allows the gymnast to gain additional height and reduce the falling speed . This is very valuable because it gives the gymnast mo re time to accomplish a skill. 3. It greatly reduces the risk of injuries. Often in the beginning stages of learning swings, especially giants, gymnasts don't extend their bodies enough on drop or bail, which causes them to loose pressure on the rings. When a gymnast doesn't maintain pressure on the rings during the drop, he experiences a snap or jerk at the bottom of the giant rotation . This often causes back or shoulder injury. Because it reduces a gymnast's weight, the bungee makes it easier for the gymnast to maintain the pressure on the rings and avoid the snap at the bottom, thus preserving the gymnast from the injuries. 4. It quickens the process of learning. Gymnasts feel comfortable using the bungee rope device because it reduces their fear of peeling off the rings and their fear of injury.

r EC H N' QU f • JUNE 2003

)>------ -- - - -- - - - - -

Because gymnasts feel more comfortable, they are more willing to learn new skills and improve existing ones. It makes the process of learning easier and faster.

5. It can be used as an effective tool in learning acrobatic skills such as front and back handsprings, "whips" and front or back flips . The bungee rope reduces the weight of the gymnast and, therefore, makes it easier for a gymnast to practice these skills using correct technique. It is much easier for a gymnast to do a technically correct jump and arm swing, hand block and snap using a bungee rope. 6. It is inexpensive and simple to use. It consists only of two main components-bungee ropes and a belt. These are inexpensive and are most likely already in the possession of most gymnastics clubs around the country. If the club doesn't already have bungee ropes and belts, they can be easily obtained. The benefits of using the bungee rope device greatly exceed the investment. HOW TO PUT TOGETHER AND USE THE BUNGEE ROPE DEVICE

Dmitry Kolodyazhny is a former Ukrainian national team member, fuLL-ride scholarship coLLegiate gymnast, coach and judge with over 20 years experience in the sport of gymnastics. Dmitry has a Master's degree in physical education and is a member of the United States EUte Coaches Association for men's gymnastics. He is currently coaching at USA Gymnastics World, Bountiful, UTe Juris Aleksejevs is a coach with 35 years of experience, 10 of which as national coach of Latvia. He is also a member of coaching staff at USA Gymnastics World, Bountiful, UTe •

The process of putting together and using the bungee rope devise is very simple. All that needs to be done to use it is to fasten a belt to bungee ropes and then attach the bungee ropes to the spin locks that are on the ring foundation. (See picture). Metal fasteners or karabiners are used to attach the bungee ropes to the belt. The belt is then situated and fastened on a gymnast's waist. The coach needs to make sure that the belt is tight enough, but comfortable for the gymnast. The gymnast then is ready for the exercise. The length and elasticity of the rope can be adjusted Spin Lo,k depending on the level of readiness and the goals of the gymnast. The less help the gymnast needs, the longer and less resilient the bungee ropes should be. By introducing the bungee rope device and method, the staff at USA Gymnastics World hopes that it will be beneficial not only to gymnasts in our club, but also to other gymnasts around the country and even the world. We hope that our device will be very helpful to both gymnasts and coaches in that it will reduce the learning time, improve skill quality, and prevent injuries. We also hope that by using the device, gymnasts will feel more comfortable learning new skills, which will make a beautiful sport such as gymnastics more enjoyable for them. - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - I (

Coaching Tips

for working with

ADD Athletes Alison Arnold Ph.D.

ADD athletes are some of the hardest working, most creative, and most talented athletes you will ever see. It's important you are coaching them in a way that maximizes their gifts. Remember, an athlete with ADD has as much desire as any other athlete to succeed. It's important not to take their behavior personally, but work with them in a positive, supportive manner. Here's a list of helpful tips in working with the ADD athlete.

I

Give athletes as much direction as possible. Pair them up with an older buddy. Surround athletes with ADD with good role models, preferably students whom they view as significant others. Try to minimize distraction wherever possible. Lower the music, or have the line face away from other activity in the gym .

Maintain eye contact during verbal instruction. Make directions clear and concise. Be consistent with daily instructions. Give only one correction at a time. Make sure students comprehend the instructions before beginning the task . Repeat instructions in a calm, positive manner, if needed. Stay patient! Help the students feel comfortable with seeking assistance when they have questions (most children with ADD will not ask for help). Monitor frequently. Maintain a supportive attitude. Keep in mind that children with ADD are easily frustrated. Stress, pressure, and fatigue can break down their self-control and lead to poor behavior.

Gifts of the ADD Athlete Creativity, Passion, Enthusiasm, Intelligence, Incredible Hyperfocus, the ability to block out all distractions except what is in front of them.
