USA GYMNAS11C Message Dear Members, 2003 promises to be a most exciting year as we prepare to compete against the world at the 2003 World Championships and the Pan American Games. The women's team is poised and ready. Highlights of the great athletic achievements over the last few years include: Team bronze medal at the 2001 World Championships; gold medals on Uneven Bars and Balance Beam and bronze medal on Floor at the 2002 Individual World Championships; a sweep of medals at the 2003 Visa American Cup (1st, 2nd, 3rd AllAround and 1st in every event); and the amazing depth of talent displayed at the Pacific Challenge by our two teams (1st and 2nd Team and 1st thru 11th All-Around). You will be Proud to be an American this summer! Kathy Kelly It is no accident! For the first time in history, the women have established and embraced a National Senior Director Program. Each national team coach and their athletes are using a similar training plan, complete with Women's Program physical conditioning, dance, skill achievement and technical support. In January of 2001, the International Elite Committee named Martha Karolyi as its National Team Coordinator. Martha has worked in cooperation with the International Elite Committee and all the personal coaches to form the core of our program . The commitment to excellence is apparent on the competitive floor, in the training camps, and within the hearts of the athletes and coaches.

As a testimonial to our unity and sense of purpose, the program has named the Karolyi Ranch as the official National Team Training Center. A new addition has been built according to the designs drafted by Tom Forster. The coaches are working together to make our training center "state of art," complete with all the training devices, rehabilitation facilities, and other necessities that our team needs and deserves. Much has already been accomplished through the joint efforts of Bela and the coaches. On May 19, we will announce the official grand opening of the training center with a press conference and ribbon cutting ceremony. We invite all of you to partner with us in this effort to support our great athletes by buying a commemorative brick which will become a permanent part of the Center. Current and past National Team Member Clubs and Olympians will have a special section reserved for them with their brick placed on the Walk of Fame. The proceeds generated by this project will go directly toward the women's program and support of our National Team members, coaches and clubs. Watch the USA Gymnastics web site for instructions on how to order your brick! Be a part of gymnastics history! In conclusion, I would like to express my gratitude to all of the national team members and coaches for their continued dedication to our beautiful sport. If you have the chance - pat them on the back and encourage them to continue to represent the clubs, athletes and United States at the highest level.

Kathy Kelly

DIAMON DS ARE A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND THE PREFERRED TECHNIQUE AND SHAPE OF THE CAT LEAP By Tommy Biggs and Gezo Pozsor

he purpose of this article is to educate the gymnastics community on the cat leap which is utilized in many gymnasts' floor routines at all levels around the country. There should . be a difference in the look of a turning cat leap and a turning tuck jump. The cat leap can be a beautiful skill, but should not resemble a tuck shape.

T

The shape that the gymnastics community would like to see is called a diamond shape. This is with the legs turned out (sideward) and high up underneath the hips. The toes may touch or slightly cross. The shape should come from a one leg take-off holding the diamond shape while in the air and the landing is on one leg. So, if the gymnast is turning a 11/2 or double

cat leap, the diamond is the shape to see during the middle part of the cat leap. The knees should NOT be forward as in a tuck shape. The legs must show a shape that has both legs up under the hips. One leg up and the other leg hanging down throughout the whole cat leap is not the correct shape. The USA Gymnastics Women's National Staff and top j~9ges agree on this diamond shape position and we hope that the lower levels will start to train this turned out shape early so when the gymnast reaches a higher level it will be easy to get a high level skill that earns credit from the judges. Check out some of the judge's comments about the cat leap!

A LITTLE HISTO RY By Muriel Grossfeld

n the 50's floor exercise was called free calisthenics and tumbling was just beginning to be allowed as an important component of the event. Dance in floor exercise, as we know it today, was not allowed. Fo r example, turned out positions like first, second, third, fourth and fifth and flexed feet were not allowed. Music was used for the first time for compulsory floor exercise in the 1956 Olympic Games and for optional floor exercise in 1958. Most connective moves were based on Scandinavian calesthenics until 1958. The cat leap was done during this period like a "cat." The arms swinging down moving/bending up and down in a more or less parallel position.

I

To my knowledge, I was the first gymnast to use what we call a turning

cat leap. A 11/2 turning saute de basque (dance called it a triple) was my opening move in 1964. My original background was dance but I came to gymnastics in my teen years. I didn't call my move a turning cat leap but someone later named it "cat leap."

Some explanation for why the "diamond shape" is important.

1. Reliable ability to do 11/2 and double turns.

2 . A more reliable and functional landing base. Landing on a turned in or parallel foot is less secure and more injury prone. 3 . Provides the potential for triple turning cat leaps. 4 . Scores better whenever a position is "still" in the air; the elevation appea rs to float or hang in the air (amplitude). Good form, especially leg-foot alignment is much easier to attain in the passe shape. The one leg up, other leg down syndrome is eliminated.

5 . The diamond shape, along with a side, curved, or turning entry, makes it much eaiser to use the arms to accomplish the turn and to enhance the look of beauty and perfection. When the arms are not effective in facilitating the turn completion, then other body parts are used to accomplish the rest of the spin. Problems like losing posture and balance, turn in or insufficiently bent legs are just some of the potentially poor results of arm failures.

6 . It is easier. Although I have heard it said second or third hand that the diamond shape is needlessly difficult, I believe the opposite is

~1~6--------------------------~(~__~rE~C~ H~ H~ /O~U~E_'~MA~Y~2~OO~3__~)~------------------------------

true. Yes, the shape must be worked, but once attained along with the proper take-off technique, the leap becomes very easy. It also requires less physical energy, which is important when the cat leap becomes part of the routine.

sO the turning cat leap is like all things in gymnastics-if , we select the most ideal technique and pursue it, our gymnasts are using their time wisely and they will score higher and be more consistent. They will also save time after the turning cat leap is learned because it takes fewer repetitions to maintain an ideal skill. It's important to be as wise in the selections of dance techniques as flipping, twisting or swinging techniques. To achieve excellence, consistency and deduction-free gance performance requires work and proper planning. Just because a leap or turn can be "made" early on by just taking a short cut, this is not a good reason to pursue non-technique. So, I hope that all of us who love women's gymnastics will agree that "Diamonds are a girl's best friend."

QUOTES FROM USA BREVET JUDGES: JUDY SCHALK Aftler ta ~e - off on a turning cat leap, the second leg must q 'ckly d w up tightly into position directly beneath the hip's, 60ining the first leg to create a turned out "diamond" hape. The "diamond" shape should be held as long as possible through the duration of the turn in the air. Release from the "diamond" shape should be executed quickLy and cleanLy. The overaLL visual impression shouLd be of the sustained "diamond" shape, not of the Legs aLternately moving in and moving out of position, never clearLy defining a shape. SUE AMMERMAN I Like to see the knees eLevated and rotated outward and the toes pointed forward and up during the cat Leap. CHERYL HAMILTON I prefer the cat Leap to be performed with the Legs in a baLLetic pas-de-chat position - bent knees opened to the side in turn-out, showing the diamond position. UNDA CHENCINSKI During the Cat Leap, it wouLd be ideaL to see: good turn out with the Legs in a "diamond" position as described in the compulsory text; height in the jump; ampLitude of the legs hip height (knees above horizontaL); good upper body posture with the shouLders pressed down and the neck Long; exactness of the turn. KlmA CARPENTER The classicaL cat Leap position with knees out and feet under hips gives the dance in a floor routine a Lightness and eLegance. MYRA ELFENBEIN There shouLd be a momentary point in the air where both Legs are in a diamond shape in the ai r (under the body). RENE NICCOLlAI A cat Leap that is performed with the Legs in a diamondshape is AWESOME to behoLd and the training time to Learn GREATLY appreciated. DEBBY KORNEGAY By performing the cat leap with the Legs turned out in the diamond shape, the body stays more square. MARIAN DYKES The diamond shape for the Legs give the cat Leap a more beautifuL Look, accentuating ampLitude and good body Line. CATHERINE (COOKIE) BATSCHE The diamond shape gives the appearance of greater ampLitude and flight in the cat Leap and enhances body Line. (continued on page 29)

uard is not only a world-class gymnast and coach at the University of Oklahoma, he's also a new dad. Guard and his wife Alisha had a baby boy, Tyler Mark Young, on Feb. 6. Guard does an incredible job balancing his career of coaching, training and family.

G

Guard, 25, has a fairly extensive list of accomplishments. At the 2003 French International competition in Paris-Bercy, Guard won a silver medal on floor. He earned the gold medal on vault at the 2002 Chunichi Cup in Japan and also won the bronze medal on rings. He was a member of team

USA at the 2001 and 2002 World Championships. In 2001 the team earned an unprecedented silver medal. At the 2002 U.S . Championships he earned third place in the all-around and was second on pommel horse. Guard's immediate goal is to do well at the U.S. Championships this summer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and make the 2003 World Championships team! "It would be great to make the World Championships team," said Guard. "But, sometimes you don't have control over making the team

so I'm going to focus on my own gymnastics. I'm starting from a 10 start value on four of my events floor, pommel horse, rings and parallel bars. On vault I'm trying a Kasamatsu 1 1/2 which is a 9.90 start value. My focus going into the U.S. Championships is to land that vault." Guard has five sisters and one brother. His father, Wayne, was on the 1976 Olympic Team and was the 1975 NCAA All-Around Champion . Guard graduated with a broadcast journalist major from Brigham Young University. Pricing Your Team-Pari I This month we will inspect the unique dynamics of team pricing. Allow me to weave the logic behind Queen City's team pricing strategy. As this is a fai rly vertical argument, please take time to assimilate each point before moving on to the next.

IT IS TRUE THAT: 1.A company benefits from having the public perceive its prices as reasonable. 2. Because the expenses of operating a team are far greater than what most parents' intuit, sticker shock is inevitable. 3. Point #1 and #2 are in direct conflict and will remain so unless leadership intervenes. 4. The most effective way to resolve this conflict is a two pronged approach: (a) make public the costs of operating team while at the same time; (b) unabashedly highlight the truly wonderful benefits of team participation (thereby raising the perceived value and 'lowering' the perceived price) .

IT IS ALSO TRUE THAT: 1.If a GymClub TRULY breaks even on its team, * the profit from a reasonably strong class base should offer a nice overall company profit. 2. You can mitigate the last vestiges of a high price argument by seeking and publicly proclaiming a break even pricing strategy: "Mom, Dad, we are not looking to make money on your child

but you certainly can't expect us to lose money, can you?" To argue against this understandable business goal tends to ring unreasonable even to the person making the argument. After all, even nonbusiness-savvy parents can intuit that it is not in their best interest for their child's GymClub to go belly-up! As a fun exercise for Cincinnati Boot Camp Grads (who are familiar with the 'lingo' of the Boot Camp Business Building Strategy), let's identify a few Boot Camp concepts used in identifying our pricing strategy: We recognized 'Common Cause' in parents' almost universal unawareness of the high cost of operating a team; we chose a Leadership Strategy grounded by 'Sharing Perspectives', more specifically, by using 'Open Book Management: Additionally, we relied heavily on our understanding of 'Marketing Strategy' to avoid getting sucked into the 'low price trap; a no-win game in a 'Value Added Industry; such as ours. * Because most GymClub owners do not know how to calculate

their team's operating expenses, Part II will address how to determine your team's TRUE break-even. Make it a great May! Jeff Metzger

SPORTS ACRO TECHNICAL UPDATE REVIEW & EXPLANATIONS: Breakdowns- If a tempo element breaks down, execution judges almost always need to take a 1.0 deduction for a fall. If a balance element fails with a logical dismount, execution judges should take 0.5 for the fall. If the dismount is illogical, the deduction is 1.0.

In the JO levels 6-9, the individual element(s) of one row should be performed by the athletes (simultaneously or consecutively) before they perform any other element. AliI" holds to presses (e.g. Level 6 WP 3A-3B) or 1" holds before movement to the floor (e.g. Level 6 WP 4A-4B) will earn a deduction for a one second short hold if the position is shown but not held a full second. Level 6 Trio 3A and 3B. The straddle must be free for 1" before the assisted press to handstand or no credit for the element. In other straddle positions in Level 6 and below, the base may steady the top before the press. more of a rotation or pirouette will receive credit. If the turn is not complete, it will have execution/ amplitude deductions. Slide to split to knee first receives 0.3 or less deduction depending on the amount of rhythm/ amplitude error. 3/ 4 or

Level 7 WP 4A- Camel to sit. Base's hand must be free from the top during the sit. The base may support on the floor during the sitting, but then must raise her hand for the static hold.

NEW QUESTIONS: 1. Q: My execution scores are much lower since we started judging individual elements per athlete at the JO level. A Level B trio could be penalized 1.2 for execution for one individual element that is only worth 0.4 in difficulty. Is that right? A: Yes, our scores will be lower until the execution of these elements improves. Please don't confuse difficulty with execution. They are really not the same. 2. Q: Do trio top, middle, and base always keep their same jobs? Could a top and middle exchange jobs during an exercise if they perform the elements better that way? A: Trio positions are freely interchangeable. 3. Q: If a Level 10 trio base tries to go to splits during a transition and only gets to knee and stops, does this element have value? A: FIG and the US have both stated that there is no credit for trios going to knee. 4. Q: If a Level 10 pair / group does not do the required element, do they get credit for the rest of their difficulty? A: Yes, they would get a 1.0 special requirement deduction in addition.

5. Q: May my Level 10 trio do a 7/4 from handstand on basket as the required element instead of from stand on basket. A: Yes, they have satisfied the 7/4 saito requirement. 6. Q: We had a problem with Level 9 MXP tumbling. During 12B, the top fails to saIto. During 12C the base does a tuck instead of a pike. What should we have done? A: The best thing for the athletes is to say that the base did 12B while the top did 12C- credit for one tumbling element, with no bonus of course. Although the base did two tuck saltos, he did not get credit for the first one. They would miss the value of one element (-0.4) but would not lose the row. 7. Q: In Level 9, what is the penalty for adding extra individual elements into the exercise? What if a women's pair does more than one individual element from a row in balance? A: At every level but Level 4 you may add additional individual elements. It is often smart at Level 9 to have more than one element from a row if you think you might not get credit for one. You will receive credit for three elements total in this case- the bonus elements will be counted first. Of course, you do receive technical/ artistry deductions for any elements you perform. 8. Q: Level 7 trio BB. Athletes showed no flight on the boost to catch but they did follow that with the required 360* log roll. Should they get credit? A: No credit because there was no flight in the boost to catch. It doesn't matter what happens afterward. This would be a breakdown-tempo element attempted but not completed. This is one of those rare situations where there is a breakdown but no fall. 9. Q: Level 6 WP 9B- front limber. The girl tries to stand from her backbend but falls back onto her hands. Then she tries again and stands. Does she get credit? A: No credit because of the fall. She just stood up from her backbend- that is not a front limber. 10. Q: When does the Level 4 exercise start? At the salute? A: No, the exercise does not start until there is motion into the first element. The salute was choreographed into the routine so the athletes would remember to do one.

UPDATED ELEMENT EVALUATIONS (update from March 12th New Element Evaluations)

TRIO BALANCE 2003 B-2 - Base in lunge, middle stands on front thigh in front needle - a) base supports middle, middle supports her own leg (V12); b) middle frees her leg (V17), c) base goes free while middle holds her leg (V26), d) base and middle are both free (V32).

ABC's of Dramatic Play by: Brant Lutska National Pre-school Advisory Board National KAT and MELPD Instructor Fantasies are real in the minds of children who are engaged in dramatic play. Children can switch roles-from animate to inanimate objects-with a blink of an eye. This is what childhood is all about-the ability to be anything we want without a worry in the world. A Movement Education program should offer many activities to stimulate growth in physical and cognitive development. Dramatic play is a wonderful group activity that can enrich movement education programs. Try adding five-minutes of dramatic play into your lessons each week. Children at age three develop the ability to use their imagination, through fantasy and games. Here's the ABC's of Dramatic Play to get you thinking! Have fun and be creative.

"USA Gymnastics and the Arrowhead Pond are thrilled with the amount of international support the world championships is receiving," said USA Gymnastics President Bob Colarossi. "The number of entries helps demonstrate the significance of hosting the World Championships on U.S. soil as we look forward to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens." Among the entries are 57 men's team and 44 women's teams. The delegations will bring with them a host of additional staff, judges, translators and coaches, doubling the number of international participants to just over 1,500, though some attrition is expected as the event nears. Nations will finalize their entries by the start of the FIG technical meetings in May, with the draw scheduled for May 24.

EVELYN CHANDLER The <liamo a shape under the body prevents the gymnast fr m making the error of pulling across the center body line wit Hthe trailing knee.

with both knees turned out and outside, heels under simultaneously (not alternately), will make for a purer shape that will build into cat leap turns of higher value with no deductions.

~RY LUll DILLARD The diamond shape underneath the body is more aesthetically pleasing. It encourages taking off square and allows the gymnast to correctly complete more LA revolutions.

LINDA THORBERG Judges look for good body alignment and amplitude off the floor, where both legs are in the air at the same time passing through the diamond shape.

CINDY MCLANE Performing the diamond shape in the cat leap accentuates better body lines and appears to have greater amplitude. PAT PANICHAS I look for good body posture with the legs bent and turned out. Both legs should show this position simultaneously at the height of the leap (diamond shape or slightly tighter). TOM KOLL Years ago when a turning cat leap was in the compulsory floor routine, the "diamond shape" was emphasized as the correct technique. Nowadays all you see are "turning tuck jumps taking off of and landing on one foot." There is no attempt to show any turn out. This type of leap should have a different value, as it is not a cat leap. CAROLE BUNGE Time spent on perfecting a good "diamond" shape cat leap leg position will lead to rewarding benefits. Setting the leap

SHARON WEBER The cat leap first must look different than the tuck jump with legs turned out. There is a time when both legs are elevated to show the position in air with feet under the body or slightly forward. MARIA DECRISTOFORO Too often the cat leap with turns is not awarded its va lues due to improper technique of the element. The cat leap is an alternating scissoring of the legs, with the legs turned out and not tucked in front of the body. The turned out leg position snould oe maintained through to the landing with the knees "breaking" the horizontal plane.

NOTE: Geza Pozsar and Tammy Biggs have produced a DVD to help coaches and gymnasts train the cat leap shape properly and to help in the overall development of a good cat leap. The DVD can be ordered by calling Geza at 916-208-8749.

Employer rtiJJ~Of Mana ement "Those who trust to chance must abide by the results of chance." . John Colvin Coolidge, (1872-1933) 30th US president, 1923·1929

hen a gymnastics coach hears the words "safety" and "risk management," they probably think about things like spotting, teaching progressions, safety certification and medical insurance. A gym owner may think about things like coach's certification, liability and worker compensation insurance and maybe equipment and facility inspections. One aspect of risk management that typically does not get enough attention by gym owners is managing the risk of being an employer.

Workplace risk includes safety and litigation risk. Though the actual responsibilities of being an employer vary by state and are governed by legislation and numerous agencies (including the Americans with Disabilities Act, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Fair Labor Standards, Family and Medical Leave Act, Department of Labor, National Labor Relations Board, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, etc.), there are some customary workplace wrongdoings that require our attention.

rassment Harassment can include a hostile work environment or quid pro quo (exchange for privileged treatment) sexual harassment. Sexual, and other forms of harassment, are a common problem. Over 16,000 cases are brought each year against employers (US Department of Labor). Claims can be created by men, women, co-workers, managers, customers, parents, students, owners, vendors, contractors and others.

Wor€pGue viof£nce Although gymnastics may not be considered at "high risk" for potential violence, the welfare of others and your own safety are at stake. Workplace violence accounts for 2 million physical attacks and 6 million threatened attacks each year in America. Thirty five percent of all violent crime occurs at the job site (The AGOS Group; 1999, 2000).

~ement

includes taking money from the cash register, making personal copies without authorization, billing personal

phone calls to the organization, running personal errands on organization time and other forms of fraud. Theft by employees costs the American economy an estimated $30 billion each year.

Viscrimination Are you an Equal Opportunity Employer? Federal law prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age or disability. Have you identified the essential functions of the jobs you hire for and what "reasonable accommodations" you could provide in order to be in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act? The Family and Medical Leave Act guarantees covered employees (of employers with 50 or more total employees) up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave for certain family and medical situations. The increasing number of claims being made under this law illustrates that not all employers appreciate the significance of this legislation.

runs+ work practices

anawor~Gue ir9uries

If a chlld gets a bloody rip on bars or one of your pre-school

students has an "accident" on the floor exercise carpet, do you have established procedures (that are practiced and followed) for blood borne pathogens in your gym? Do you train your staff on proper lifting techniques and ergonomics? Do your coaches have the proper equipment to do their jobs safely? Regardless of the size of your organization or the number of staff, you have a duty to provide for the safety and welfare of all your employees. There are even more issues; unfair labor practices, retaliation, workers' compensation fraud, to name only a few others. If you think that these problems could never affect you, you are wrong. Liability for workplace wrongdoing can arise from the behavior of employees, supervisors and managers. Risk is also realized by non-employees who interact with your organization; volunteers, vendors, clients, independent contractors, board members, visitors and more. We live in a litigious society that allows anyone to bring a lawsuit against anyone else, at any time, for any reason. The only people that really enjoy lawsuits are lawyers. Remember that everyone has access to a lawyer and when a lawyer's telephone rings, it rings with a "cha-ching" rather than a "ringring." Lawyers are always looking for opportunities for work. Don't be a victim of an employee lawsuit that could ruin your business and your reputation. Most small organizations cannot bear the expense of a single successful claim against them. Even if you win the lawsuit, you lose; your valuable time is wasted, your attention to your business is disrupted, your credibility is

impugned, staff morale is affected and your insurance premiums could be impacted. Be prepared. In order to properly deal with these issues and avoid a lawsuit, there are some recommended guidelines for employers to follow. The first defensive measure an employer can take to avoid a legal action is to conduct thorough background checks of all applicants. Follow up on all references, watch for employment gaps and other "red flags." Negligent hiring or negligent retention places you at risk for a legal claim. Gym owners should also offer and require ongoing training to his/ her employees. A set of reporting standards should be established. A "zero-tolerance" policy for any violation of practices or procedures should also be enforced. Even though this no tolerance policy is imperative, an atmosphere of open communication and empathy should exist in the organization. Employees should be able to feel that their concerns are important to their employer and wi ll be dealt with appropriately. The best defense against a lawsuit is a strong positive relationship with your employees so that they trust you and your responses to their issues. REFERENCES:
