We have had a very exciting start to the summer, beginning with the 2003 U.S. Gymnastics Championships held in Milwaukee, Wis., June 19-22. The depth of the men's and women's program was evident by the tight battle for the number one slot. In the end, Paul Hamm earned his second consecutive National All-Around title and 2002 World Championships Uneven Bars Gold Medalist, Courtney Kupets, earned her first National All-Around title.
In addition to great competition from the men's and women's programs, the Rhythmic National Championships and Sports Acrobatics Team Trials also took place.
At the rhythmic venue Mary Sanders earned her second consecutive All-Around title and four event titles. Mary is looking forward to the Rhythmic World Championships, Sept. 24-28 in Budapest. From the looks of her performance in Milwaukee, she will represent the United States very well. The World Team Trials for Sports Acrobatics showcased athletes competing for assignments to the 2003 Freedom Cup, an international competition hosted by USA Gymnastics to be held July 30-Aug. 3 in Jacksonville, Fla. The Team Trials served as the first of two competitions used to select the Sports Acrobatics National Team from among all elite athletes.

Many gymnasts floated in and out of the top five spots at the 2003 U.S. Gymnastics Championships. The expertise and depth of the men's program was obvious. Paul Hamm turned out to be the most consistent performer in Milwaukee, his hometown, and won his second National Cltampionships All-Around title as well as event titles on pommel horse and high bar. Hamm, who trains at Team Chevron-Swiss Thmers and is coached by Stacy Maloney said, lilt was really special to compete here in my hometown. It was tough defending my title with Jason and Blaine both back in competition and healthy." Jason Gatson, whO sat out the last couple of yeam due to injuries, certainly nuide a strQilg comeback into the sport. Courtney, from Hill's Gymnastics in Maryland, came on strong in Milwaukee winning her first USA National All-Around title. This 16-yearold was in fourth place after preliminaries but pulled her way up to the top after the all-around finals to win the gold. "Winning the National Championships is just amazing," said Kupets. "I fell on vault the first day but I knew it's not over until it's over. I just came into finals wanting to hit all four events and pull up in the standings." Kupets, who is the 2002 World Champion on bars, was named Athlete of the Year while her coach, Kelli Hill, received the honor of Coach of the Year. Just behind Kupets were Tasha Schwlkert and Hollie Vise who tied for second in the all-around. Schwikert, 18, is the defending National Champion but had been sidelined for much of 2003 due to injuries. She had the highest all-around score during the second day of competition. She said, "I have no disappointment in not winning. With what I've been through this year I'm just happy to have tied for second all-around." Schwikert trains at Gymcats in Las Vegas with her coach Cassie Rice.
Will,
It's a
Will, TEN. 0 CLASSIC
501 BLUES
The TEN. 0 CLASSIC is the most durable grip on the market. We know - our customers talk. Of course, it takes longer to break-in the CLASSIC grip s because of the low stretch factor of the heavy duty leather. In fact, in recent independent laboratory tests the TEN.O classic leather was compared to the J eather in otheL po pul ar grips and was found to withstand 18% greater pulling stress. If you are a hard training, big trick gymnast who doesn't like her/his grips to stretch or doesn't like to buy grips frequently we recommend using THE CLASSIC . Literally thousands of gymnasts do! You will love the baby suede padding, the custom designed we bbin g for a fresh new look, and the comfy soft swing insert.
Just imagine grips that fit with the comfort of your oldest, most faded jeans-from th e first swing. Consider baby suede padding, COMFY SOFT SWING blue foam insert for those who need a little extra softness , a distinctive wrist strap and you have a 501 BLUES .
-tuatl-on Sl
Most gymnasts want a grip that's soft and easy to break in . They also want them to be durable. The 501 does this better than any other grip on the market AND they do it with style and good pricing .

Vise, from World Olympic Gymnastics in Plano, Texas, was leading the first three rotations during finals but finished on her weakest event, vault, dropping her to second. Vise, who won the title on beam, has gained strong international recognition by claiming the all-around gold medal at the 2002 Senior Pacific Alliance and by winning two bronze medals at the 2001 Goodwill Games. Vise, 15, is coached by Evgeny Marchenko. Annia Hatch of Stars Gymnastics in West Haven, Conn., won vault with her impressive Yurchenko double full. Hatch was in the lead after the preliminary competition but had a fall on bars and beam during finals and finished fifth. Capital Gymnastics' Katie Heenan, the 2001 World Championships Bronze Medalist on bars, won her favorite event, defeating Kupets who is the current World Champion on this event. These results show the enormous strength of the U.S. women's program! Capital's Ashley Postell, the 2002 World Champion on beam, took second on this event to Vise but won the floor title. She also finished a solid fourth in the all-around. JASON WHITFIELD MEMORIAL INVITATIONAL The Jason Whitfield Memorial Invitational was created by the Jason Whitfield Memorial Foundation as a way to support the scholarship endeavors of male gymnasts. This foundation honors the memory of National Team Member and Olympic hopeful Jason Whitfield whose devotion and enthusiasm for the sport of gymnastics continues to serve as an inspiration for many. The Whitfield foundation, which is run by Jim and Cathy Whitfield, has supported the men's program for the past 11 years by providing scholarships to deserving athletes. To date the Whitfield foundation has awarded an incredible $85,500 in scholarship awards. The names of all 35 recipients of the Jason Whitfield award were called at the Men's National Qualifier in Ann Arbor and 18 of the gymnasts were present. This gathering provided not only an opportunity for the Whitfield's to meet some of these gymnasts face to face, but also provided the athletes a chance to personally say thank you for the scholarship they had been given. This scholarship program is a homerun because of the work of Jim and Cathy and the entire Whitfield Family!
More than 100 of the nation's top men's gymnasts tumbled into Ann Arbor on May 17 for the Men's U.S. Championships Qualifier at Keen Arena on the campus of the University of Michigan.
