National Team Coordinator Martha Karolyi said, "We are very pleased with the performance of the U.S. gymnasts at the Visa American Cup. They earned first through fourth all-around and won 11 out of 12 medals on the four events. The girls rose to the occasion. Ashley (Postell) and Courtney (Kupets), who just won gold medals at the World Championships, proved they are still on top . Carly won the all-around and Annia (Hatch) competed for the first time for our country and won both vault and floor. The gymnasts' preparation is on the right track headed toward the World Championships." "My expectations going into this meet were pretty high," Patterson said. "I knew I had a good chance of winning. I had good practices and training camps the weeks before. It's just really important to stay confident. After this win, I have a lot of confidence looking ahead to the 2003 World Championships in Anaheim." "It felt good winning my fifth Visa American Cup title," said Wilson. "It's a good stepping stone for USA Gymnastics and me heading into the World Championships this summer. I was happy with all of my routines except pommel horse. This was a new routine and I was a little tentative." VISA American Cup continued on page 14

World Championships team medalist Brett McClure made his move, winning the all-around title at the 2003 Winter Cup Challenge at the Sports Center in Las Vegas, Feb. 89, hosted by Dusty Ritter Gymnastics, LLC. McClure, who turned 22 on Feb. 19, had solid performances and received the highest scores on pommel horse, vault and parallel bars en route to a final score of 54.950. McClure, who trains at ChevronUSOTC, said he needed the strong start on pommel horse to get the ball rolling. "My goal in practice and at competitions is not just to hit my routines, but to also stick my landings. In practice, I won't leave an apparatus until I stick at least two landings. I think that has helped me tremendously in preparing for this meet and this season,路 McClure said. "This meet sets the tone for me for the year. This is a huge year with the World Championships in August we have to protect our home turf." Finishing second all-around and maillin n into the top ranks of men's gyrnnlis!l~j!i:t Chevron-USOTC's Jason Ga'tsolrl~ Gatson, who led in the all-aroul 1999 U.S.

USA & JAPAN TRAINING CAMP The USA men's senior national team held a training camp with the national team from Japan, Jan. 15-20, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. It was very motivational for the coaches and athletes to work together since the two teams are so closely matched in world competition.

Q: In your community how are you known?

(continued from page 34)

Mary lou: Some call me Mrs. Kelly, but mostly I' m known as Shayla and McKenna's mom right now and I love that. At the girls' school the kids call me Ms. Mary Lou. I think they get that from my television show on PBS, Mary Lou 's Flip Flop Shop.

Q: How is the Flip Flop Shop doing?

Mary lou: It's going great. The show is a larger-than-life playroom where real kids make positive discoveries that can help them become all God wants them to be! (check out flipflipshop.com)

Q: Tell me about your involvement with the World Championships?

Mary l ou: I' m so excited to be back and involved with gymnastics. For the last seven years I've been dedi cated to my family and have had little time for involvement with the sport I love. It's neat to be back involved with gymnastics and participate with the World Championships as the honorary chairman along with Bela and Peter.

Q: From a former gymnast point of view, could you explain the significance of the World Championships?

Mary lou: The World Championships event is just like the Olympic Games only harder because all of the countries are participating. The best athletes in the world gather together. The Olympics have more prestige because of the name and reputation of the event, but for the gymnasts, the World Championships event is so important, especially the year before the Games. Q: Walk us through what it was like competing in your home country at a huge competition like the World Championships?

Mary lou: I' ll never forget what Bela said to me. He said, "Mary Lou, you will stand on your head and spit quarters for the opportunity to compete at an Olympic Games in your home country." He was making the point that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a gymnast to have the opportunity to compete in her home country at a major event. You walk out there and you know that arena is for you . The signs are waving and fans are yelling. I believe in momentum and positive energy. You 're out there competing for yourself and your country and also for the fans. It's an incredible feeling.

Q: What would it mean for the U.S. gymnasts to do well at the World Championships?

Mary lou: It would make a statement to the whole world that we are back and we are here. In my day, we were always chasing the Russians and the Romanians. Now everyone is chasing us. That is an awesome feeling to be the leaders in the sport.

Q: Tell me a little about your involvement with the "longines Perfect 10 Moments in Time" campaign?

Mary lou: Longines is sponsoring a campaign called the " Longines Perfect 10 Moments in Time." I' m the spokesperson for the campaign and we would like every gymnastics fan to go online and vote for his or her favorite gymnastics moment. There is a list available online for you to choose from (www.usagymnastics.org). The list includes nearly every USA medal performance earned at a World Championships or Olympic Games. Sometime during the World Championships, it will be announced as to which moment in gymnastics history was the favorite among the fans. Thanks Mary lou for your time and we look forward to your involvement with the 2003 World Gymnastics Championships!
