irst and foremost , I'd like to applaud the Sports Acrobatics program for their astounding success over the past few month s. Congratulations to Shenea Booth and Arthur Davis for bringing home the first World Championships gold medal for the USA! They tied Russia to earn top honors in mixed pairs. Also faring well was the women 's pair of Nicolette Bohnert and Jessica Gardner, who earned a trip to finals and finished fifth overall. The U.S. squad displayed great teamwork and heart, and I am very proud of their results.

Robert V. Colarossi President of USA Gymnastics

I'm also pleased to report that the U.S. won two silver medals at the Sports Acrobatics World Age Group Games, which were held in conjunction with the World Championships. Congratulations to medal winners Claire Brunson and Olivia Solo in women 's pairs and Danielle Heider, Holli Mon'is and Samantha Schabow in women's trio. The U.S. sports aero team also brought home nine medals, six of them gold, from the recent Winterthur Cup in Winterthur, Switzerland. These impressive results surely affirm that the program is on track for continued success. I'd also like to report on the strong results of our women's squad over Brazil and Ukraine in September's tri-meet in Curitiba, Brazil. We won the team gold medal while Carly Patterson, Hollie Vise and Terin Humphrey finished first, second and third overall. Furthermore, we took home nine of the twelve individual event medals. It was a dominating effort by our senior and junior women and I am continually impressed by their talent. Moving forward , planning for the 2003 World Gymnastics Championships next August in Anaheim is in full swing. All-session strip ticket packages and Championship ticket packages are currently available and selling fast , so I encourage you to buy your tickets now. Don't wait as the lower bowl continues to fill. National Travel Systems, the exclusive travel partner of USA Gymnastics, has developed packages for the 2003 World Gymnastics Championships that include hotel, event tickets, Congress and Southern California entertainment. Be sure to take advantage of the convenience and savings that these packages offer. Visit Worlds03.com for further details. In closing, I'd like to wish good luck to our men's and women's teams competing at the 2002 World Championships, November 20-24 in Debrecen, Hungary, and to the athletes representing the U.S. at the Trampoline and Tumbling World Cup Final, November 23 in Hannover, Germany. I strongly believe in our medal potential and look forward to the United States making a positive impression leading into Anaheim and Athens. Go USA!

competition pitting "USA vs. the World," August 22, at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim. Although the challenge was more of an entertainment event than an official competition, more than 5, 000 spectators were treated to gymnastics at its finest.

T

he event also served as a sneak preview of what is to come at the 2003 World Gymnastics Championships, August 16-24, which will also be held at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim . The competition format was as follows: four u.s. men competed as a team against the four international men and the four u.s. women took on the four international women . Each team competed two events of their choice, excluding pommel horse and vault. The USA was well represented with National Champions Tasha Schwikert and Paul Hamm along with National Team members Ashley Postell, Carly Patterson and Hollie Vise on the women's side and Sean Townsend, Brett McClure and Morgan Hamm on the men's side. The men's "World" team was comprised of World and Olympic Champions Alexei Nemov of Russia , Jordan Jovtchev of Bulgaria, Yuri Chechi of Italy and world Cup medalist Kyle Shewfelt of Canada . The women's "World" team included World and Olympic Champion Svetlana Khorkina of Russia, World Championships Medalist Daniele Hypolito of Brazil , European Championships Medalist from the Netherlands' Verona Van De Leur and Pacific Alliance Medalist Brenda Magana from Mexico. Tasha, Carly and Hollie swept first through third and led the ¡ USA women's team to a victory over the world team scoring 78 .453 to 76.827. Tasha said, "This competition was so much fun . It was great competing with the juniors, too! " USA men were handicapped due to an injury and scored 67.639 to the World's 77.703 . Team USA had to compete with one less routine than the World Team due to an injured Morgan Hamm, who strained his tendon on floor and had to withdraw from the competition .

Paul said, "The set up here is great. I love this arena, it will be great for the 2003 World Championships. Sean added , "The crowd helps me to get excited . I' m just trying to soak up the atmosphere and city and come back next year with confidence at the 2003 World Championships." The judges? Well they weren't your average judges wearing blue suits. They included Bela Karolyi , Shannon Miller, Betty Okino, Kim Zmeskal, Peter Vidmar and Kurt Thomas as well as 1960 Olympic Decathlon Champion Rafer Johnson , who was selected to light the Olympic Flame in 1984. It was a wonderful event bringing together some of gymnastics past and future greats. The event aired on NBC Sports, September 1. (CONTINUED on page 18) RESULTS on page 19 A

can remember the energy, the heightened state of awareness, the tension that comes from knowing that this isn't just another day. I remember the random thoughts ("1hope I don't grab my pants on my scissors like I did in workout 3 days ago," 'Wow, they did a good job decorating this place," 'Why is Bart eating peanut M&M's between events?"). Then I remember a more startling realization, "This one maHers." The place was Los Angeles, the time was 1984, and the event was the Olympic Games. What followed those first impressions was a defining moment in USA Gymnastics, as the U.S. teams made history in Southern California .

arl Heger is 39 years old and a 19-time member of the USA Trampoline and Tumbling National Team . He has competed in 11 World Trampoline Championships and also helped lead the men's double mini trampoline team to the gold medal at the 1988 and 1999 World Trampoline Championships. Karl is an 18time National Champion in his sport.

K

•

Karl was thrilled to learn that trampoline had been added to the Olympic Games in 2000. It had always been a dream of his to compete in the Olympic Games. Karl competed at the 1999 World Trampoline Championships, which was used to qualify for the summer Olympics. Unfortunately, Karl didn't place high enough to qualify for the Olympics. Due to injuries and work responsibilities, Karl believed this was his only chance to represent his country in the Olympics. However, as fate would have it, Karl did have the opportunity to be a part of the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games in a much different capacity than he had ever dreamed. Karl is employed as a Special Agent for the FBI and is a member of the SWAT team . With heightened security after the 9/11 disaster, Karl was selected to be a part of the Chicago FBI SWAT contingent that provided tactical operation capability for the 2002 Olympic Games. The Chicago FBI SWAT team , along with a number of other FBI SWAT teams from around the country, was responsible for helping to protect the athletes and venues of the Winter Olympics from terrorist attack. Karl and his fellow members of the FBI were required to go through extensive training to prepare for any terrorist activity that could be expected at the Olympics. Karl received such training as extreme cold weather training , ski and snow shoe operations, biological and chemical attack, and helicopter assault operations. Karl commented that all of this training took as much dedication as his trampoline training had required all those years. Although Karl wasn't able to represent his country at an Olympic Games on trampoline , he was able to participate in an Olympics in a crucial role as a part of the security. Karl is married to Ute Heger, who competed for the West German Trampoline team and was ranked ninth in the world in 1988. Ute also coaches Karl on trampoline . The couple has two sons, Karl Jacob (KJ) who is 9 and Kevin who is 13. Both kids are active in the sport, train at Gymnastics Academy of Rockford and are coached by their parents. In fact, Kevin competed at the 2001 World Age Group Trampoline Championships and made the finals in two events.

or the first time ever, the USA won a gold medal at the Sports Acrobatics World Championships, held in Riesa, Germany from September 27-29. U.S. athletes Arthur Davis and Shenea Booth performed beautifully in the mixed pairs competition and finished in a tie with the Russian pair for the gold medal with a score of 18.76. Davis and Booth, from Empire Acrogymnastics Sports in Riverside, Calif., returned home as world champions, competing against athletes from 20 countries. "It was an amazing experience," said Booth. "It was so surprising. We gave it our all." Our coach told us that it might be too soon for us to win a medal since we've only been training togetheLior about 10 _ _ months. But we worked hard and did our best and we won the gold medaL" Many of the top pairs in Sports Acro have been training together for three to six years so it was quite unusual for a newly formed pair to be so successful. Davis added, "In one sense it was surreal. I've been working toward this gold medal for 9 years. The moment was very overpowering. It's been a long journey and it came together all at once. I was very happy and thankful to everyone who has helped me get there." Davis commented on his partner saying, "Working with Shenea is great. She's really driven like I am. She's such a hard

Although the USA did not compete in Men's Pair and Men's Group, they still had enough points to finish ninth in team scoring. Jay Binder, Team Physician and an integral part of the delegation for the U.S. said, "The reason the U.S. did so well is because the athletes, coaches, judges and officials worked so well together. The positive working relationship is a direct result of the training camps that have occurred prior to major international events."

Women's Pair Tempo for Marie Annonson and Brittany Horrell CAT in Sacramento, Calif., and performances by the trios of Lori Oberst, Kelly Brock and Alayna Davis from ATA in San Jose, and Robin Stevens, Candace and Kelly Patton also from ATA. NATIONAL GYMNASTICS DAY CELEBRATION Thank you to all of the clubs who participated in National Gymnastics Day 200'2! From hearing, reading and seeing all the wonderful activities that took place all over the country, it appears the day was a GREAT success. Also, special thanks go to all of the clubs who hosted a Cartwheel-A-Thon to benefit the Children's Miracle Network. Your efforts helped raise more than $65,000. Congratulations to all of those involved. Your hard work and dedication will mean a great deal to young patients at Children's Hospitals around the country.

For the second year in a row, Dalto Wixom from DeVeau's School of Gymnastics in Fishers, Indiana, earned the most money individually for the Children's Miracle Network Dalton, a second grader and a Class VI gymnast raised $730 for the Children's Miracle Network. Dalton started gymnastics when he was 2 years old and was thrilled he was able 10 win the conlest for the second consecutive year! Here's a few photos of celebrations that look the country.

MORGAN WHITE IS MOVING ON

91 ROSES When All-Around World Champion , Olympic Medalist, and Gymnastics Hall of Fame member, Kim ZmeskalBurdette came into work on Fri, Sept. 13, she found a surprise on her desk-91 roses!

Morgan White, 19, has retired from the sport of gymnastics. White, from Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy and coached by Mary Lee Tracy, said, "I decided to retire because I wasn't enjoying gymnastics anymore. When you spend six to seven hours in the gym each day you really have to love it. I wasn't giving 100% so I decided it was time to move on to other things."

Her husband, Chris Burdette, had covered the desk with 91 roses commemorating the 11th anniversary of Kim's Gold Medal in the Women's All -Around at the 1991 World Gymnastics Championships in Indianapolis. USA hosts the 2003 World Championships in Anaheim, California. Visit www.worlds03.com for more information and ticket details.

Morgan won all-around titles at the 1998 U.S. Championships in the junior division and the 1999 Pan American Games. She competed at the 1999 World Championships in China, as a member of the sixthplace U.S. team. Morgan was also named TOPs Athlete of the Year in 1999. In 2000, Morgan made the Olympic Team, but a broken foot just prior to the competition sidelined her from competing in the Games.

So what's next for Morgan? "I'm finishing two classes in high schoo l and volunteering in a kindergarten classroom. I'd like to study either elementary education or journalism in college next year. " Morgan wou ld like to get back to Florida, where she grew up. She'd also like to stay involved with USA Gymnastics, perhaps with the TOPs program.

EVALUATE

YOUR SPORTS NUTRITION DIET Is it a 10? by Mary Sowa, MS, RD

Give yourself one point for every question you answer yes.

Ieat out less than three times per week.

Ihave a high carbohydrate meal! snack shortly after practice ends. After a hard practice your liver and muscle glycogen stores are nearly depleted. Shortly after you finish working out, the enzyme in your muscles that coverts glucose to stored glycogen is at its peak. Take advantage of this time to eat a high carbohydrate snack or meal to reload your glycogen stores.

Eating at home more often usually means that your meals will be well balanced and healthier. However, if your busy lifestyle depends on you eating fast foods to meet your energy needs, you can still choose healthy items at many fast food restaurants. Bring along a cooler of fresh fruits and vegetables to provide more color and nutrients to your selection.

Ieat breakfast every day. We all have heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Why is this true for athletes? Overnight our body has used up most of our liver glycogen stores to help regulate our blood sugar. Liver glycogen is essential when we start exercising in order for us to access our muscle glycogen stores. So break-the-fast every day.

Idrink or eat 3-4 servings of high calcium faads every day. Building strong bones is an essential foundation for any athlete. Calcium is an important mineral in building bone density. In order to optimize your bone density you need 1300 mg (9-18 years of age) of calcium each day. This can be achieved by drinking or eating 4 servings of high calcium foods. These include milk, yogurt and pudding . Medium sources of calcium include orange juice fortified with calcium, tofu, salmon and kidney beans.

I have at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day ensures that your diet is rich in numerous vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytochemicals. These nutrients are important for a variety of reasons, including aiding wound healing, guarding against tissue damage and helping muscles contract. They add rich colors to your meal and they also taste good!

I include a good source of protein at my meals.

Ichoose a healthy lunch. Do you bring a lunch or buy lunch at school? Either way, your lunch should include a healthy source of protein and a good variety of carbohydrates. Try to vary your choices each day so you get a well balanced diet over the week. Suggestions: tuna sandwich, pretzels and frozen grapes or fruit flavored yogurt, turkey slices, graham crackers and baby carrots.

As a gymnast you need more protein than someone else your age that doesn't exercise. Make sure you meet your protein needs each day but planning a good source at lunch and dinner. Breakfast may take a little more planning but consider milk, yogurt or eggs as your protein source. Oatmeal is a great source of protein and carbohydrates. If you are a vegetarian, you may have to take a little more time inp anningyour meals to make sure you are getting enough protein in your diet.

Ihave a high carbohydrate snack in the middle of my workout.

I

If your workouts are lasting three hours or longer, you should try to include a healthy high carbohydrate snack. A high carbohydrate snack will help refuel your muscle glycogen stores and increase your stamina and performance at the end of your workout. If your gym doesn't have a snack break, make sure you have a high carbohydrate snack one hour before your practice begins. Suggestions: raisins, frozen grapes, orange slices, graham crackers or sports bars.

Your mom was right on this one. "Fun" foods come after you have eaten your "high performance" foods. Don't let empty calorie foods take the place of performance foods. Add up your score!

9-10 Congratulations! You have a high performance diet.

Idrink water or a sports beverage frequently during practice.

7-8 Good Job! You are making healthy choices.

Keeping yourself hydrated is the number one priority when it comes to sports nutrition. Even the slightest bit of dehydration can affect your performance. Remember, that heat and humidity will increase your fluid needs. (Tip: Drink 4-6 ounces of water every 15-20 minutes (1 gulp = 1 ounce). U S A

G Y Itt N A 5 T ,

Ieat "fun" foods only after Ihove my "high performance" foods.

6 or less Keep trying! Use the above ideas and suggestions to help change your present diet to a high performance one.

When asJ<ed ow they began training together Shenea said, "MlY p,artner quit, then Arthur's partner quit shortly after an ,s'nce we were from the same gym, we started wo ki , g together. We get along really well. We have go d chemistry together. We have the ability to argue tHen two minutes later we're laughing." pair's first competition was in March of 2002. They ound 30 hours a week. When asked what a no I day is like, Shenea said, "I start my day around 7 a.m. and train from 8:30-11:30. Then I go home eat and do m ependent study for school for a few hours. I take a _ na . tHen I'm back at training from 5-8:30 p.m." Of co rse Arthur's day is pretty similar but he also co es Levels 6-10 in Sports Acro at Empire and does choreography for gymnasts, cheerleaders, acrobats, and

sport fitness athletes in clubs all over the country. "My training schedule has become more vigorous in the last year," said Arthur. "I have had to cut back on doing choreography." As for how these two got into the sport, Arthur was 19 when he [jrst tried Sports Acro. "I was a gymnast but quit when I was about 13 because I was getting too tall." Arthur is now 6' 4-1 / 2". Arthur has five sisters who were all involved in gymnastics at one time. Shenea said, "When I was 9 or 10 years old I was doing dance in Santa Fe, Calif., and Sports Acro was in that same gym. They asked me to try the sport and I loved it." Shenea is the youngest of five kids. "I have three older brothers and one older sister. My sister, who is four years older than I am, was my partner at Worlds in 2000. She was my partner for three years." When asked what it was like to be a partner with your sister, Shenea said, "It was weird. It was difficult because we would argue, but we've always been close so that helped. We would come home from practice arguing about stuff that happened during practice and my parents would tell us to get away from one other and go to our rooms. Fortunately we never stayed angry for very long."

of compu lsory routines, I feel gymnasts just want to get to the big tricks and haven't spent enough time on the basics. This is a good way for me to stay involved in the sport! We have a Golden Retriever named Sam that we rescued from the dog pound and we're thinking of getting a German Shepherd, too .

Q: How are you staying in shape these days? A: I belong to a fitness cente r. I also walk my dog, ride bikes and lift some weights.

Shannon and dtri;s" dO%r Sam

Q: lefs talk about the upcoming 2003 World Championships to be held in Anaheim, Calif., Aug. 16-24, 2003. Can you tell us what ifs like to compete in the World Championships in your home country?

A: I co mpeted in Indianapolis at the 1991 World Championships. The fans were great. It was wonderful seeing signs held up and all the enthusiasm . It's a unique experi ence and a stepp ing stone to the Olympics. The 2003 World Championships w ill be the qualifier for the 2004 Olympic Games so fans wi ll get to see the stars of the World Championships and upcoming Olympics.

Q: What was it like to win the World Championships? A: It was so incredible. I just missed the go ld coming off the '92 Games so I was very hungry for the win! The World Championships were held in Birmingham in 1993 and it was amazing. Then, to repeat it in 1994 and overcome injuries, it was a great lesson of overcoming obstacles. I found out a lot about myself. This helped me going into the 1996 Olympic Games. I knew I could overcome whatever obstacle was in front of me.

Q: Do you think it would be different to win the World Championships in the u.s. versus abroad? A: Absolutely! You can see the difference by comparing the Barcelona and Atlanta Olympics. When the event is in your home country you get immediate results . It's in all forms of media right away. When you 're in a different country there is a delay. Everyone is excited but not everyone has fo llowed it or knows what's going on . When you 're in a different country you don't get quite the same feeling. Now, since September 11, 2001 , it's even more important than ever to have that support from your country. Shannon is the most decorated u.s, Gymnast in history!

Q: How is a World Championships different than the Olympic Games?

Shannon Miller wearing her Olympfc Gold!

A: Th e World Championships event is much bigger than the Olympi c Games in terms of the number of gymnasts competing. Every country is eligib le to bring a team. At the Olymp ic Games, on ly the top 12 teams in the world are compet in g.

Q: From your gymnastics career what was your most memorable moment in the sport? A: I have many memorable events but the one that sti cks out in my mind the most is the 1996 Olympics that were held in our own country and winn ing the team gold medal. It was so incredibl e!

Thanks Shannon and good luck in your future endeavors. We look forward to seeing you in Anaheim!
