VISA AMERICAN CUP U.S. National Champion Tasha Schwikert claimed her first title at the Visa American Cup, scoring a 36.899, while Cuba's Eric Lopez earned his second Visa American Cup with a score of 56.375.

The Future of Men's NCAA Gymnastics?

I hope your plans are set to attend this year 's Annual National Congress and U.S .

Championships, August 7-10, in Cleveland.

The city of Cleveland will be an excellent host for the four days of festivities, offering plenty of restaurants and entertainment within walking distance of the hotels, Cleveland Convention Center and the Gund Arena. I

n light of escalating rights fees paid to the NCAA and larger universities, and the over commercialization of collegiate sports, it's time to remember what collegiate athletics is all about. When I began working with USA Gymnastics in March of 1994, I faced two pressing tasks. First, make sure that the U.S. men's team qualified for the 1996 Olympic Games. Second, lobby the NCAA to prevent the dropping of Men's NCAA Gymnastics Championships. At that time, the NCAA Championships were at risk because less than 40 institutions were sponsoring men's gymnastics as a varsity sport and the moratorium that was protecting the men's championships was due to expire. Maximum effort was placed on extending the moratorium in order to give everyone time to analyze the situation and find solutions to retain men 's programs. If you' ve followed the story, you already know that we received an extension of the moratorium. Two years later we were able to achieve protective status for all NCAA Olympic sports. Unfortunately, this did not stop men's programs from being dropped.

At this point, the indications were that many men's NCAA gymnastics programs were facing extinction due to pressing financial concerns. So, USA Gymnastics went to the United States Olympic Committee for help.

Through the efforts of USA Gymnastics, USOC and numerous collegiate coaches, a new program was born-the USOC/NCAA Conference Grant Program. Men 's collegiate gymnastics programs were awarded a total of $1.5 million in funding, through their respective conferences, to assist with men's gymnastics programs.

Although this program was offered to all conferences with men's gymnastics programs, only some schools took advantage of the funds while others declined because they didn ' t want to comply with the requirements of receiving grant money. Of course, the primary requirement of the grant program was that the schools not drop their men's varsity gymnastics programs. Even with this new program in place, some men's programs continued to drop.

Prior to the end of the Conference Grant Program, USA Gymnastics went back to the USOC and received approval to use a portion (continued on page 34)

President of USA Gymnastics What an exciting time to be involved in the sport of gymnastics! With the 2002 U.S. Gymnastics Championships fast approaching and both the rhythmic and artistic World Championship competitions around the comer, this quadrennium should prove to be unforgettable.

I am continually impressed with our U.S. teams trammg toward Athens. Tasha Schwikert, Courtney Kupets, Tabitha Vim, Paul Hamm and Sean Townsend did an excellent job representing our country at the 2002 Visa American Cup in Orlando on March 2. Congratulations to Tasha, who earned her first Visa American Cup title, and to Cuba 's Eric Lopez who claimed his second. A successful women 's elite podium meet also took place in conjunction with the Visa American Cup, which gave our up-andcoming elites a valuable opportunity to compete on the podium, similar to World Championships and Olympic Games competition . Congratulations to Kristal Uzelac who won the senior division and early Patterson who earned first place in the junior division.

A very exciting summer event calendar is drawing near. First, USA Gymnastics is ready to welcome the world to New Orleans for the 2002 Rhythmic World Championships in July. 2002 marks the first time the event has ever been hosted in the U.S. More than 25 countries will contend for the title of group world champion . Russia, Belarus, and Greece, Olympic medalists from the 2000 Olympic Games, are expected to compete along with the U.S. group, which is hard at work at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid. Tickets for the event are available via usa-gymnastics.org.

Championships, which showcases all five gymnastics disciplines, are currently available as you register for Congress.

Competition will be top-notch and will help identify the front runners for the upcoming World Championships and Olympic Games.

Congress is shaping up to be one of the best yet. The theme "Gymnastics Excellence Through Education" perfectly sums up the week of activities. I recommend that you attend the Business Conference on Wednesday, August 7, which has sold out the past two years. Valuable information on national business trends will be shared while allowing you to network with gymnastics professionals and industry leaders across the country. The exhibit hall will again be filled to capacity with the latest and greatest in gymnastics equipment, apparel and services.

National Gymnastics Day is August 24, 2002 .

USA Gymnastics is planning a celebration to kickoff the public ticket sales campaign for the 2003 World Gymnastics Championships.

It's sure to be a special day as honorary National Gymnastics Day chairs Bela Karolyi, Kim Zmeskal, Peter Vidmar and Kurt Thomas have been invited to join in the fun . Have you ever wished you and your best friends could go to school together, live together, and train together, all the time. Well, that's what it's like for six USA Rhythmic gymnasts who are training at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY, in preparation for the 2002 Rhythmic World Championships. The group is coached by Elena Savenkova and trains about 6-7 hours per day six days a week. The Rhythmic World Championships is set for July 12-14 in New Orleans and these five young gymnasts hope to make their mark in New Orleans. Meanwhile they're working in perfect harmony in New York.

This is the first time ever the Rhythmic World Championships have been held in the U.S. and the U.S. women are up for the challenge. USA Gymnastics asked the gymnasts a few questions about their training, goals, and living arrangements. Let's meet the USA Rhythmic Group team members.

She listens to hip-hop, pop, dance and oldies music. In the future, Masha would like to be a fashion designer, as her hobbies include making clothes and shopping.

USA Gymnastics: What's it like training for the Rhythmic World Championships? ' .J

Masha: It's actually a lot of fun. I love practicing with my teammates because they are great girls. It's a lot of hard work but it is all worth it. This is a great opportunity that I couldn't pass up. I have a chance to represent the U.S. in the World Championships. I can't wait for that moment to come!

USA Gymnastics: What's it like living away from home?

Masha: At times I get homesick but we rely on each other because we have a new family here in Lake Placid. But I also miss my horne in Los Angeles a lot because of my family, friends, and just the big city atmosphere. This will also prepare me for college life, which is my future plan.

USA Gymnastics: What do you miss most from home?

Masha: I really miss my family; my mom, two brothers, and two nieces. I miss my friends so much. I love hanging out with them and just chillin.

I also really miss my school because it's completely different than Lake Placid High School, especially since this is my senior year and I would have been graduating from Beverly Hills High School with all the people I've known since second grade. Nina: Group is very different from individual. The best thing about being in a group routine is having 5 other people who are like my sisters, and who know exactly what I am dealing with and who understand me.

USA Gymnastics: Have you developed a special bond with your teammates?

Nina: All of us have very special bonds, as a group and with everyone individually. We have all been through the best and worst times together so we are probably the closest that I have ever been with anyone.

USA Gymnastics: What's the food like in the dorm?

Nina: The food is pretty good. There are a lot of choices and the cooks are very nice to us. A lot of the times they will cook whatever you ask them to cook for you.

USA Gymnastics: How's your new school and living with all of your teammates?

Marissa: The school here is very different from myoid school. My oid school was very big, whereas, this one is really small. It's great going to school with all of my teammates though. Living with them is great too. Even if we are just hanging out we have such a great time together.

USA Gymnastics: What have you leamed being on your own?

Marissa: Being away from home is very hard for me but I have leamed that I can do it! I have also leamed to cherish the time that I have with my family. Even the little things that we do together now seem so much more important to me.

USA Gymnastics: What do you do when not going to school or training?

Marissa: Because I play the guitar we have what we call sing-alongs where I play the guitar and we all sing. It's so much fun. Our favorite song to sing is the "Friends" theme song.

A Chat With KIM ZMESKAL Kim Zmeskal won the 1991 World Gymnastics Championships, becoming the first American gymnast to ever accomplish this feat. We talked with Kim recently about her win 10 years ago and what she's doing now. Here's what Kim had to say: USA Gymnastics: What was it like to win the 1991 World Championships in your home country?

Kim Zmeskal: Winning World Championships was incredible in itself. I felt like I was dreaming when my teammate Hilary Grivich shook me saying, "You won! You won!" It was even more special to share it with so many family, friends, and American fans!

USA Gymnastics: What are the advantages to having a World

Championships in your home country?

Kim Zmeskal: As obvious as it sounds, I felt "at home" competing in the u.s. There is no language barrier. It wasn't a challenge to find the food that we were accustomed to. The equipment was the same that we competed on the entire season. But best of all, when marching into the arena, we knew that the crowd roaring was in support of every element we performed. It definitely gave me an extra boost of energy with each routine I competed.

USA Gymnastics: What advice would you give our USA gymnasts who are training for

this competition?

Kim Zmeskal: Be ready for an experience unlike any other national or international competition they've ever competed in. Americans love to watch other Americans succeed, so its gonna be loud. But when it comes to preparation, stay focused and keep training with August 16-24, 2003 in mind each day. continued on page 28

If you are not feeLing confident or are thinking negative thoughts, the body responds with fear and baLking. It's strange, but sometimes you are totally unaware this is happening. Many gymnasts say they are not afraid, but continue to baLk on skiLls. If there is baLking, there is some kind of fear. It may be a fear about somet hing that has never happened. Or something that might happen . It might be a response to too much pressure. Or not doing enough progressions Leading up to the skiLl. Whatever it is, the key is to change your thin ki ng! What are you thinking as you're t raining and performing?

We all know how powerfuL the mind is. Think of the mind Like a saiLboat on the ocean of Life. As the boat sails, thoughts controL the weather. Negative thought patterns create storms and bLocks in our Lives, whiLe positive thought patterns create smooth saiLing. The discipLined athLete has as much controL of her thoughts as a musician has controL of his instrument. It is essentiaL to increase awa reness of when your thoughts become out of control. A "tight mind" is one that is focused, effortLess, confident, rationaL, and in control. A "Loose mind" is negative, dramatic, irrationaL, over-t hinking, doubtfuL and out of control. Most bLocks come from having a Loose mind. Too many times, t he mind becomes Loose, going off on its own "fieLd trip" of negativity and doubt.

These fieLd trips may Lead to Losing a skiLl. Remember, out of controL t hinking Leads to out of controL performance.

A gymnast battLing the bLock needs to bring out the entire army. There are three aspects of t rai ning that are especially heLpful. OnLy utiLizing one or two of t hese aspects is Like fighting a battLe with one hand tied behind your back. Two of these training interventions are physicaL, one is mental. It's very co mmon fo r coaches and at hLetes to do the physicaL interventions without addressing the mentaL part. Since we know that bLocks are mostLy mentaL, it's cruciaL coaches and athLetes address the mentaL side, too! The two physicaL aspects are progressions and repetitions, the mentaL aspect is tightening the mind.

# 1: PROGRESSIONS Fi rst thing to do when you have a bLock is go back to the earLiest progression you can compLete successfuLLy. Whatever that progression is, doing it over and over will heLp you gain confidence. It may be doing the skill with spot, stacked mats, or into a pit or resi. Keep doing the progression as many times as you can until you feeL ready to increase to the next LeveL of difficuLty. Have your coach spot Less and Less or puLL out mats one at a time. Keep increasing difficuLty untiL you feeL confident doing the skiLL again.

#2: REPETITIONS ALong with the progressions, you need to do numbers, I numbers, numbers!

Keep doing each skill and / progression untiL you can perform them in your sLeep / or with your eyes closed. Do so many numbers you are / actuaLLy sick of the skiLL! Numbers wiLL heLp you feeL more confident which in turn changes your thinking about the skiLl. You begin to say, "I can do this," rather than "I'm gonna stop." #3: TOOLS TO TIGHTEN

THE MIND Progressions and repetitions can't break the bLock aLone. DeaLing with the probLem directly wiLL heLp the bLock break easier and faster. The best way to break the bLock cycle is combining progressions, repetitions, and tight mind tools. Here are the three most effective \ mentaL tools to break the bLock.

I have written before in USA Gymnastics magazine about the importance of mentaL choreography (MC) or "key thoughts." MC more than any other tooL heLps to tighten the mind. Think of MC as bLinders for the mind. MC keeps your mind "Locked down" so that distraction or doubt can not interfere with your focus. Create key thoughts that you say to yourseLf for any skiLL you feeL bLocked on. Say those thoughts in your head whenever you do the skill or the progressionthat is the most important part. As you do each progression and repetition, be sure to say your mentaL choreography words. Your key thoughts wiLL heLp your body compLete the skill automaticaLLy.

bLocked on. Put your body through each of the body positions required for the skill whiLe saying mentaL choreography. FeeL yourseLf doing the skiLL as much as possibLe. Do each body position from start to finish.

ANCHORS It's important to be aware when your mind is Loose and off track. Then, you must have enough determination to puLL it back on course. The turbuLent thoughts of your mind can puLL your saiLboat way off track. At times, pulling it into the dangerous whirLpooLs of the Bermuda TriangLe! Your mind must be anchored strong and steady to stay on course in the storm of negative thinking . Just as you puLL your body back to proper position to make a technicaL correction, you can puLL your mind back the same way by using an anchor.

Your anchor is a series of thoughts or actions that wiLL puLL your mind back to focus and doubtLessness. Your anchor wiLL be strong "come-backs" to negative thoughts. HeLping your mind return to focus, fearLessness, and doubtlessness.

ExampLes of strong anchors include: "breathe, stay on course, I can do this," "breathe, tight mind, don't go there," or "reLax, keep it cooL, it's no big deal." Each anchor statement shouLd include breathing and positive seLftaLk. Your anchor shouLd brea k the downward spiraL of frustration, fear, or nervousness, and get your mind back on course. Whenever you feeL a bLock coming on , use your anchor to move you to a positive pLace.

Breaking the bLock is something aLL gymnasts can do. It's important to keep a positive attitude. Stress feeds the BLock Beast. The more you teLL you rseLf, ''I'm getting over this," "I know I can get this back," "It's getting better every day," the quicker you wiLL break the bLock. Don't Let negative thinking defeat you. Stay positive, stay totally doubtLess, knowing you wiLL get the skill back. Sometimes the more pressure you put on yourseLf the worse the bLock. Keep it cool. Let go and trust you'LL be back on course in no time!

Practice imagining yourseLf compLete the skill whiLe your eyes are open, Looking at the apparatus. If you are bLocked on vauLt, stand at the end of the vauLt runway and see yourseLf doing a perfect vauLt. Be sure to do your mentaL choreography words every time you imagine yourseLf doing the skiLL. The Stella Zakharova Cup took place in Kiev, Ukraine, March 28-29. Capital Gymnastics' Ashley Postell, coached by Tatiana Perskaia and Victor Vetrov, won the gold medal on beam, the silver on vault, finished fourth on floor and fifth all-around . Postell , 15, also won third place in a special award for most elegant gymnast. The competition included gymnasts from Russia , Belarus, Ukraine , Netherlands, Brazil, Bulgaria, Belgium , Canada , and the USA.

In the Men's Open competition, Ryan Weston from Chubbuck, Idaho, finished sixth with a 104.70.

In the Girls 17 & Under competition, Shanelle Landry of Lafayette, La. , won the Girls 17 & Under with a score of 99.9 points. Landry's teammates Alaina Hebert and Erin Blanchard placed third and fourth.

In the Boys 17 & Under competition, Daniel Owens of Pecatonica, III., narrowly missed a spot on the podium with a score of 94.9. Good enough for a fourth place finish, Owens' score was just 0. 1 pOints behind the third place finisher.

USA Wins Medals Gymnix International

In the Boys 14 & Under competition, Phillip Devine of Pecatonica, III., won the Boys 14 & Under competition in his first intemational competition.

National Team Coordinator Joy Umenhofer said , "This was a great experience for our athletes. They did very well against some tough competition."

The 2002 Gymnix International took place in Canada, March 8-10 . The U.S. athletes dominated the competition taking the top four places for both juniors and seniors.

Jordan Schwikert won the senior all-around title with a score of 36.550. Schwikert is from Gymcats in Las Vegas. World Olympic Gymnastics' Kaitlin White took second with a score of 35.725 while Terin Humphrey from Great American Gymnastics Express took third with a 35.400 and Parkettes' Kristal Uzelac was fourth with a score of 34.925.

In the junior competition, World Olympic's Carly Patterson won the all-around with a score of 37.050 followed by her teammate Hollie Vise with a 36.050, Parkettes' Tia Orlando with a 35.375 and Orlando Metro's Melanie Sinclair with a 34.850.

During event finals, White won the vault title, Schwikert eamed the bars title and Terin Humphrey grabbed the floor title. Russia's Irina Kryutchkova won first on beam.

In the junior competition, Patterson won vault, Vise eamed the beam gold medal and Orlando won the floor title. Ukraine's Inna Teslenko eamed gold on bars.

Trampoline World Cup

By Joy Umenhofer The Intemational Trampoline World Cup took place February 22-23 in Mykolayiv, Ukraine. Members of the U.S. delegation included athletes Ryan Weston, David Ford, Jennifer Parilla, and Mackenzie Stone, as well as judge Pat Henderson and Head of Delegation Joy Umenhofer.

Weston placed 8 th in Individual Trampoline , performing the highest difficulty by a U.S. male. He was tied for 7th going into the finals.

Weston won the hearts of the Ukrainian fans , fellow athletes, coaches, and judges as he showed incredible determination to finish his routine .

Weston brushed the pad on his second triffis, but continued on to finish his routine in the center of the trampoline with a triple twisting double back.

Parilla placed 11th in Individual Trampoline, while Stone and Ford finished in 24th and 3 1st place, respectively. In addition, Weston and Ford teamed up for Synchronized Trampoline and finished in 10 th place overall.

continued from page 14 USA Gymnastics: Can you tell us what you're doing now?

Kim Zmeskal: My husband Chris and I just started Texas Dreams Gymnastics and Texas Flyers Cheerleading, in Coppell, Texas this past November. We are quite busy getting the gym up and running.

It has been very fulfilling to open the doors with a handful of kids in classes and to now see our enrollment climb and be able to affect so many young athlete's lives. We just started our competitive teams and are looking forward to hosting our summer camp as well. I also started putting my brevet judging rank to use by judging the American Classic. I'm looking forward to judging more this year.

USA Gymnastics: What is it like to coach gymnastics now, after having been a gymnast for so many years?

Kim Zmeskal: I really love coaching! I love connecting with the girls, and I enjoy the day-to-day steps in watching their confidence grow and their skills improve. When I was the gymnast, the challenge was to find the "right buttons" to push within myself to learn a skill correctly. Now, the challenge is even greater, because it is my responsibility to help each gymnast understand what she needs do to improve.

USA Gymnastics: What have you taken from your former coaches Bela and Martha Karolyi and Mary Lee Tracy to apply in your current role as a coach?

Kim Zmeskal: From the Karolyis, I learned early on that consistency and discipline are a must to succeed in our sport ... or in anything for that matter. It is not enough to work hard every once in a while. And details do matter. I remember Martha coaching the other coaches. I think this is a big reason why the Karolyis had so many generations of awesome gymnasts. They were able to duplicate their knowledge. And from Mary Lee, I learned how great it is to have a more open coach-athlete relationship. I use the communication skills I learned in Cincinnati with the girls I coach. Also, Chris and I have used so many of the wonderful program ideas that we were able to experience with Mary Lee. USA Gymnastics: Will we be seeing you at the 2003 World Championships either working in some capacity or as a spectator?

Kim Zmeskal: I don't know what "hat" I will wear at the 2003 Worlds, but I don't want to miss it! In a pre-Olympic year, this is an opportunity to witness history in our own backyard. It's definitely a competition that every gymnast, fan, coach, and judge should mark on his or her calendar and make plans to attend!

to always fight. There was still a lot of meet to go."

OU entered the last rotation, high bar, a mere two tenths ahead of Ohio State who finished the m~et on still rings: There, the Buckeyes were forced to count an 8.65 from Eric Van Sickle after rings specialist Matt Smith mis-cued a swing and came off the event.

StilL the Sooners, who had frequently struggled on high bar this season, weren't celebrating quite so quickly.

"Well, I wouldn't say I exactly liked our chances," Williams laughed. "We only had a two tenth lead and you've got to catch that bar."

And the Sooners .did just that, racking up their highest high bar total of the season (36 .95) with a series of outstanding performances.

Quinn Rowell, competing in only his sixth collegiate meet after a series of injuries, notched a career-high 9.4 (Zuo Li Min; in-bar full to hop full; Takemoto; Tkatchev; stuck double layout dismount), while Furney declared himself worthy of a third-place all-around finish by debuting a new set (layout Tkatchev, Tkatchev, Gienger; stuck full-twisting double layout) for a 9.3.

Over on rings, last-up Raj Bhavsar also nailed his updated, ultra-difficult routine (Pineda to inverted cross; maltese, Pineda to maltese; Azarian roll to cross; stuck double layout dismount) .

But even Bhavsar's heroic effort-he competed with a shoulder so sore he could barely lift his arm after the meetand subsequent 9.75 wasn't enough for OSU to push past Oklahoma .

Bhavsar was forced to comfort himself with the all-around crown while senior co-captain Everette Bierker sealed the deal with another 9.3 (layout Jaeger; stuck full-twisting double layout dismount) for the Sooners and a kiss for the high bar.

"This feels good:' Bierker announced.

"Really, really good. I think I'll be smiling for a week."

"I guess it's satisfying [to win the allaround]:' a stoic Bhavsar said after the meet, "but I can't say I'm satisfied. The team goal was what I was after and just like any other second place finish it just makes you want it more. I'm already excited for a new group of guys to come

in; to lead a new team into battle."

"Overall, I thought second would feel a lot worse than it does," Ohio State coach Miles Avery added. "It actually feels OK. I'm really happy for Mark and his program. We're good friends and I already told him that the rubber match will be in Philadelphia next year. We have one and they have one.

"This meet is THE most exciting gymnastics meet of the year, period/' Avery continued. "Just like last year this competition went down to the last event and I have to say that Mark's boys were just totally ready. They stepped up and

handled it like men and they did a great job. That's the way to win it."

"Last year after the meet I told Miles that if I couldn't win it. I'm glad he did, and this year he told me the same thing," Williams said. "Winning a national championship at home is pretty amazing. I competed on a team (Nebraska 1980) that won at home and there's nothing like it. And, as a coach, I just thank these guys for the effort they've shown. They worked so hard this year. They've certainly earned this."

Cal (217.65) claimed the third spot for the second-straight year with virtuoso performances on pommel horse and parallel bars, leading the field on those events. Zhang Jinjing and Cody Moore's exceptional all-around performances secured All-American status, with second and fifth place finishes, respectively.

"We kind of had the opposite meet of Oklahoma:' Cal coach Barry Weiner explained. "We did the first three events well and then we kind of came unglued.

One factor confirmed during this review process was that each program 's situation was unique. It was determined that there were little things that could be done to improve each program's situation, but the bottom line is that each institution 's president is left to do whatever he or she deems necessary when it comes to budgets and programs.

Therefore, programs continue to be dropped and university athletic directors and presidents continue to blame lack of interest, cost of retaining the program, and Title IX. We know by reviewing our membership numbers that participation and interest in men 's gymnastics has continued to grow. We also know that the budget for a men 's collegiate program, with full scholarships, ranges from $300,000 to $500,000 per year which is a drop in the bucket considering the average budget for a Division 1 Athletic Department in the 1999-2000 year was $1 1.2 million.

Now, concerning Title IX, I thought that the dropping of men's gymnastics was an unintended consequence of Title IX; but now I believe differently. It's becoming more clear that mens ' Olympic sports are being dropped at universities because of run away spending of athleti c departments ' administrative costs, with no apparent accountabi li ty. The University of Minnesota just announced the dropping of its men 's gymnastics and men 's and women's golf programs due to the athletic department losing money and because these sports do not create enough revenue.

However, consider these facts: • University of Minnesota awarded a 7 year - $9 million contract to football coach Glen Mason.

• University of Minnesota negotiated a contract buyout for $1.5 million with Clem Haskins, its 2000 basketball coach.

• University of Arkansas fired and paid off its basketball coach at $6 million - $ 3 million buyout of his contract and $3 million in deferred compensation with only one year left on his contract. This amount would have endowed a men's gymnastics program at a university.

• In 200 1, 22 collegiate football and 17 collegiate basketball head coaches earned an annual salary of 1 million dollars.

The University of Minnesota told its men's gymnastics program it would need to raise $6 million to endow its program. I think it's becoming clear that university athletic directors and presidents are dropping men's sports, and in some cases women's sports, to pay the rising cost of these "special" NCAA programs and the coaches. The deceiving part is that, on many occasions, they are hiding behind Title IX when doing so.

There are many other examples of huge salary increases, bonuses and out-of-control spending un facility upgrades and improvements, just to keep up with the university in the state next door, and at the expense of smaller "non-revenue" producing sports.

Shouldn't the NCAA work to ensure diversity for student athletes at universities? There are many things that could be done to help this situation. Things like reducing the number of footba ll scholarships from 85 to 60 would be a huge savings to each institution while freeing (continued on page 35)

Legislate across the board expenditure limits or only allow a percentage of an athletic department's budget to go to football or basketball- the lion 's share of the budget maybe, but not all of it. And what happened to the concept of the well-rounded student-athlete? Perhaps the NCAA should place accountability measures on athletic program budgets where NCAA sports lose a percentage of their scholarships based on that program 's graduation rate. This should be a standard of every Ron Galimore university. And finally, make different Senior Director rules for "non-revenue" Olympic Men's Program sports instead of using rules that were created for football and basketball.

For example, presently, a Division I gymnastics program is required to purchase open-ended plane tickets when traveling to the NCAA Championships. This causes them to spend up to $3 0,000 for their team 's travel instead of $5,000. Why?

In my opinion, the NCAA has a moral obligation to provide a variety of opportunities for student athletes and to do something about the present dilemma before it's too late. This is a situation that can be fixed, but it starts with changing the way funds are allocated and spent by university presidents and athletic directors. If the universities and athletic departments are not willing to voluntarily make the changes needed to insure a diverse offering of opportunities for student athletes then the non-profit status should be revoked and the athletic department should be treated like any other commercial sports enterprise and be taxed.

I believe that the problem of sports being dropped is bigger than one National Governing Body and it's not just men 's sports that are being dropped. What is the NCAA waiting for as presidents from universities re-shape opportunities for student athletes to three sports for men and only a few sports for women?

You CAN make a difference!

So how can you help?

• Support existing NCAA Gymnastics programs by attending competitions.

• Write to the NCAA President, Athletic Director, and/or Board of Regents to express your opinion on this subject.

• Write your Congressman expressing your concerns on this subject.

• Write to the NCAA National Office regarding your concerns on this subject.

RHYTH MIC FUTURE STARS PROGRAM

Much like the TOPs and the Future Stars programs for women and men, t he rhythmic program began a Future Stars talent identification program as well. The regional testing took place in the fall of 2001 and 169 athletes participated. These athletes represented 30 gymnastics clubs throughout the USA. There were three age categories tested including 7-8 year olds, 9-10 year olds and 11-12 year olds. The top 20% in each age category was named to the team. A camp wi ll take place in 2002 for the Future Stars National Team .

PRESTIGIOUS AAU SULLIVAN AWARD Gold and Silver World Championships Medalist Sean Townsend was among the to p Five Finalists For the 72 nd An nual James E. Sullivan Award, which recognizes the top amateur athlete in the nation Fo r 2001. This honor is considered the "Oscar" of sports awa rds.

On April 9, 2002 it was announced that Figure Skater Michelle Kwan won this yea r's award. Other Finalists in addition to Kwan and Townsend were Natalie Coughlin (swimming), Mark Prior (baseball) and Alan Webb (track and Field). These athletes were selected based on their qualities of leadershi p, character, sportsmanship and the ideals of amateurism in the year 200 1.

Only one gymnast has ever won the honor and that was Kurt Thomas in 1979.

"These individuals exemplify the best amateur athletes in all of sport with their commitment to sportsmanship, community, and education," said AAU President Bobby Dodd . USA Gymnastics: What's it like living away from home?

Mauriah: Living away from home has made me realize how important my family is to me, and how much they do for me. Now, I'm responsible for supporting myself and taking care of business.

USA Gymnastics: Do you hang out with any of the other athletes at the Olympic Training Center?

Mauriah: One of the neatest things about the OTC is meeting different athletes. Many of the winter athletes from around the world stopped at the OTC on their way to Salt Lake City. We've met Olympic skiers, bobsledders, and lugers . The USA Women's Hockey Team lived here with us, and they were all really nice. We also shared our gym with the badminton team.

USA Gymnastics: What's your daily schedule like?

Mauriah: Since I graduated from high school last year my daily routine is a little different froW the other girls. I volunteer at an elementary school each morning. I love working with the kids; I help them with reading. The 2 nu graders are definitely my favorite class. In the afternoons we train from 1-7:30 or 8:30. We also do strength and conditioning with weights.

Look is interested in studying business and medicine . Look began rhythmic gymnastics after watching the competition in Atlanta during the 1996 Olympic Games.

USA Gymnastics: What's it like living away from home?

Taryn: Living away from home, I feel a sense of freedom but also a greater sense of responsibility. Sometimes, I get extremely homesick for my own bed , my own house, and most of all my family.

USA Gymnastics: What's the best part of being away from home?

Taryn: The best part of being away from home is living with a family of best friends. I never thought that I would ever have five sisters, and one thing I have always dreamed of was a sister. We help each other out, and go through everything together.

USA Gymnastics: What's the food like in the dorm?

Taryn: The food is not bad, I enjoy the grilled chicken, something that I have everyday. There is lots of variety and the food is healthy, too.

USA Gymnastics: When did you join the group and how are things going?

Katherine: I joined the group at the end of January. Things are going really well now that I have adapted to living here.

USA Gymnastics: Has it been difficult joining the team later than the others?

Katherine: At first, it was very difficult. The girls had already been living together for almost five months, and were completely bonded seeing how they had been through so much together. But I have become really good friends with all of them now, and we are like a family. We are all sisters. We are always there for each other, and since we don't have our families here, we treat each other as family. We take care of each other.

USA Gymnastics: What's the best part of your new situation?

Katherine: Everything! Just the whole experience. It's different than anything I've ever experienced. Living away from home is hard at times, but it definitely pays off. I'm having the hardest time of my life, b ut also the best time of my life.

2002 American Classic and Challenge The American Classic/Challenge took place in Indianapolis, Indiana, March 21-24. Olympian and World Championships medalist Tasha Schwikert won the all-around, scoring a 37. 465, followed by Kaitlin White and sister Jordan Schwikert. The Junior Division was led by teammate Hollie Vise and Carly Patterson, followed by Kassi Price in third.

In the American Challenge competition, Shayla Worley won the Child National division; Claire Fox won the Junior National Division; Chari Knight-Hunter won the Senior National Division; and Princetta Cummings won the TOPs division.

A team competition was added to the American and U.S. Classic for the first time. Top finishers from day one, in both the Junior and Senior divisons, were mixed together and competed as a team. According to Senior Women's Program Director Kathy Kelly, "The concept of "team" has been the foundation of the National Team training plan for 2002. The bronze medal winning 2001 World Championships team exemplified the success of team unity."

USA Sweeps Canada's Spring Cup and Jurassic Classic

By Courtney Caress The U.S. Team brought home 37 medals from the Jurassic Classic and the Spring Cup that took place March 15-16 in Calgary and Toronto, respectively.

"I am very impressed with our team's results at these meets," said USA Gymnastics President Bob Colarossi. "Intemational competition provides valuable experience for our athletes as they prepare for upcoming competitions in this Olympic quadrennium."

World Bronze Medalist Ashley Miles from South Texas Gymnastics Academy and Liz Tricase from illinois Gymnastics Institute placed first and second in the senior division of the Spring Cup and led their team to victory. In their first -ever Sarah international assignments, Curtis from American Elite Gymnastics in Oregon and American Twisters of Florida Kassi Price finished first and second in the junior division and won the team title as well.

The American athletes fared well against competitors from Argentina, Russia, Ukraine, Israel, Canada, and Mexico in the individual events as well. Tricase and Miles finished first and second on floor, Miles brought home the gold on beam and Tricase won the vault gold . In the junior division, Curtis won an impressive three gold medals on vault, floor, and bars, while Price finished in the silver medal position on vault.

JURASSIC CLASSIC The U.S. women's team, consisting of juniors Carly Patterson from World Olympic Gymnastics in Texas, Parkettes Tia Orlando from Pennsylvania, Wond OlympiC'S Hollie Vise , and Kaitlin White swept the team and all-around competition, placing first through fourth, respectively. The team also brought home several individual event medals.

Patterson, Onando, and White went 1-2-3 on both vault and floor, while Vise, Patterson, and Orlando swept the medals on bars. Patterson and Vise also placed first and second on beam.

On the men's side of the competition, a mix of junior and senior athletes represented the U.S. The team was made up of Todd Thornton from Houston Gymnastics Academy, Cody Moore from UC-Berkeley, Daniel Furney from the University of Oklahoma, D,J, Bucher from Queen City Gymnastics in Ohio, and Sho Nakamori from Stanford Gymnastics. This strong team of gymnasts edged out the Canadian team for first place with a score of 164.675 to 161.25.

Thornton received top honors in the all-around competition , with Moore and Fumey finishing second and third. The men also fared well in the individual 6\â&#x201A;Ź!lts. Thorntm won an impressive four individual medals, placing first on parallel bars, second on floor, and third on rings and vault.

Moore and Nakamori placed first and third on high bar, and Bucher placed third on parallel bars.

SELECTION PROCEDURES Women's Selection Procedures 21002 Individual World Championships

November 20路24 Debrecen, Hungary I. OVERVIEW

A. Four female athletes per FIG Technical Reglement prescription will represent the USA at the 2002 Individual World Championships.

B. The Selection Committee, with final approval from USA Gymnastics' President, will determine the athletes who will represent the USA at the 2002 Individual World Championships at a Selection Camp conducted in October.

II. SELECTION CAMP

A. The follOWing athletes are directly qualified to the Selection Camp: 1. Any 2001 World Championships Individual Event Medalist.

2. Any 2001 World Championships Individual Event Finalist, prOVided that she finishes in the top five at the 2002 U.S. Gymnastics Championships on the event in which she competed in the Event Finals at the 2001 World Championships, according to the point system established by the International Elite Committee (see the attached Exhibit A).

3. The first four athletes an each event according to the point system (see the attached Exhibit A) established by the International Elite Committee by their placement at the 2002 U.S. Classic and Day One and Day Two competitions at the 2002 U.S. Gymnastics Championships.

B. The Selection Camp will serve as the final selection camp for the 2002 Individual World Championships. e. Two competitions will be conducted at the Selection Camp.

D. The competitions at the Selection Camp will be judged by the World Championships Judges and the International Technical Consultant, if available. If any of the above are unavailable, an alternate judge will be invited by the Selection Committee.

III. SCORING

FIG Compo III Rules will be used for the second day at U.S. Championships and both intersquads at the Selection Camp.

IV. 2002 U.S. GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

A. Qualification to participate in the 2002 U.s. Gymnastics Championships: 1. An athlete may qualify to participate in the 2002 U.S. Gymnastics Championships through the USA Elite Regional/National Qualifier and then the American Classic or the U.S. Classic. The American Classic is scheduled for March 2002 in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the U.S. Classic is scheduled for July 2002 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

2. The eight (8) gymnasts who comprised the 2001 World Championships team, plus the injured qualifier automatically qualify to the 2002 U.S. Gymnastics Championships.

3. Any previous World or Olympic team member is

directly qualified to participate at either or both the American Classic and the U.S. Classic in a minimum of two events and will qualify to the 2002 U.S. Gymnastics Championships if she places first on one event and places in the tap six on the other event.

B. Time and Place: The 2002 U.S. Gymnastics Championships will be conducted August 8路10 in Cleveland, Ohio.

V. SELECTION COMMInEE

A. The Selection Committee will consist of the National Team Coordinator, the Chairman of the International Elite Committee (if unaffiliated), and the Athlete Representative. In the event the Chairman of the International Elite Committee is affiliated, the International Elite Committee will select another individual who is unaffiliated to serve on the Selection Committee.

B. The Selection Committee will consider the follOWing areas when selecting members for the 2002 Individual World Championships team: 1. Results from the Selection Camp, the 2002 American Classic, the 2002 U.S. Classic and the 2002 U.S. Gymnastics Championships 2. Start values 3. Hit consistency and results from past national and international competitions 4. International experience 5. Execution VI. PETITIONS

A. Petitions into the Selection Camp will be considered by the Selection Committee from any athlete who either: 1. Is a 2001 World Championships Individual Event Finalist, or 2. Was injured or ill and unable to participate at the 2002 U.S. Gymnastics Championships, prOVided that she has competed at either the 2002 American Classic or the 2002 U.S. Classic, or had an international assignment in 2001 or 2002.

B. The named personal coach for each of the 2002 Individual World Championships team members will be invited to participate at the 2002 Individual World Championships. Every effort will be made to cover all of the expenses of the personal coaches. However, in the event that Women's Program 2002 Individual World Championships event budget does not make it possible to cover the expenses of each personal coach, the Selection Committee will determine which coaches will have all 2 00 2

of their expenses covered. The remaining personal coaches may be responsible for all expenses associated with participation at the 2002 Individual World Championships should they choose to attend.

VIII. REMOVAL

An athlete or coach may be removed from the 2002 Individual World Championships team or from any step of the process for selecting the 2002 Individual World Championships team if he/she violates the USA Gymnastics Code of Ethics or USA Gymnastics National Team Funding and Support Agreement (in case of the national team athletes). An athlete may also be removed from the 2002 Individual World Championships team in the event of injury or illness which inhibits peak performance at the 2002 Individual World Championships. According to the National Team Funding and Support Agreement, athletes must submit to any medical diagnosis that is requested by USA Gymnastics to assure that the athlete is able to compete and is not at risk for further injury. Verification of injury or illness will be made by two doctors selected by USA Gymnastics.

Removal may only occur by action of the President of USA Gymnastics aher consultation with the Selection Committee and an interview with the athlete and her coach. Any decision to remove an athlete or coach is subject to review through USA Gymnastics' Grievance Procedures.

C. Participants in the Individual World Championships intrasquad competition will be determined in the following manner: 1. 2. Members of the Senior National Team selected at the 2001 US. Gymnastics Championships or 2002 Winter Cup Challenge will automatically qualify to participate in the 2002 U.S. Gymnastics Championships.

3. Time and Place: The 2002 U.S. Gymnastics Championships will be conducted August 7-10 in Cleveland, Ohio.

She also took first place at the lady luck Inv~e in los Vegas with a score 0136.65. She troins at Palm Beoch Gymnastics and looks lorward to moving up to level 5.

lucy, 12, ~ a level Bgymnast at Roseville Gymnastics Center in Sf. Paul, Minnesota. She trains 16 hours a week with cooches Carole Fink, Anna lenz, and Rich Stenger. At the Northern lights Inv~ational, she achieved her highest all-around score 01 a 36.10. She also made it to the finals compemion on bars, vauh, and floor.

Jessico, 15, competed at the LA lights Internatianal Rhythmic Campetmon as a level BSenior. She ploced in all events winning two gold medak, one lor floor and one lor the all-around.

She also received two silver medals lor dubs and hoop and a bronze lor ribbon. Jessica troins at KMC Rhythmics.

ERICA & ERIN HICKS MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA Erico and Erin are 9 years old and identical twins, but don't do identicol gymnastics.

Erica participates in the USA Gymnastics Women's program, and Erin ~ in the USA Gymnastics Rhythmic progrom. Erica ~ a 2001 TOPs Gold Team Member and Erin ~ on the Rhythmic Future Stars National Team. They both at level 7.

CHELSEA MASELLI WEST CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA Chelsea, 9, ~ a level 6 who troins at Diamond Gymnastics in Delaware. At levek 4and 5 she took first all-around at every compemion. Chelsea took second all-around with a score 0136.125 at the Bahama Breeze Inv~otional in Nossau. Her coaches are Siava Glazunov, Mary AlI~on Brodley and Nicole Hudson.

MAKAYLA STAMBAUGH SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA

KATHLEEN BOYD ENTERPRISE, ALABAMA Kathleen, 9, ~ a member 01 the Enterprise Aeriak. The 2001 Aeriak level 4 team had five all-around State Champions and won the first place team. Kathleen pasted the all-around high score lor the State Meet with a 3B.B25. She took first on bars (9.675), first on beam (9.75), lirst on floor (9.7) and third on vauh (9.70).

Makoyla, 11, was the level 10 All-Around Champion at the 2002 Rips Inv~ationol held in Reno, Nev., with a score of 36.550. She placed first on bars with 0 9.125 and first on floor with 0 9.625, and fourth on beam with a 9.0 and 10th on vauh. Makoyla troins at Byers Socramento Gymnastic Center and ~ cooched by Debbie and Eli Rodriguez and Mas Watanabe.

ALEXANDRA RAFAL HEWLETT, NEW YORK Alexandra, 7, won the level 4 all-around mle at the 25th Anniversary I love NY Cup 2002 in her age group. She placed first on beam and floor, lourth on vauh, and fihh on bars. Ali trains at Five Star Gymnastics Acodemy in East Rockaway.

Machuga Cup Competition

The U.S. Sports Acrobatics athletes came home from the Machuga Cup Intemational lnvitational, held in Krasnodar, Russia on April 5-8, with three overall med als and five top six finishes!

In the Mixed Pairs event, Arthur Davis and Shenea Booth eamed a silver medal. For Women's Pairs, Marie Annonson and Brittany Horrell won the silver medal.

The USA Women's Trio of Megan Nickerson, Amanda Harris, and Aimee D'Hondt finished with a bronze medal. Unfortunately an injury forced the trio of Sabina Knight-Yuponce, Tami Annonson, and Heather Downs to withdraw after their Balance routine. The Mixed Pair of Megan Vaughan and Kris Duncan, and the Women's Pair of Jessica Gardner and Nicolette Bohnert both finished in third place by overall scores. However, according to the competition rules of one medal per country, neither pair was awarded the bronze medal they eamed.
