Dear Friends, The gymnastics community across the world is Robert V. Colarossi a family, and this was shown in no greater way than by President of the recent tragedies that have affected the United States and USA Gymnastics the entire world. I'd like to thank all of the federations and individuals who have extended their support to USA Gymnastics in this difficult time. We may have our challenges and disagree upon issues from time to time, but at the end of the day, we're all members of one large gymnastics family brought together by the love of our sport. We have been irrevocably changed by this horrible tragedy, but I have faith that we are stronger people and more determined gymnasts, coaches, administrators and fans because of it. Displayed to your right are some examples of the outpouring of support that we have received. I am sad to inform you that Mari-Rae Sopper, who was the newly-appointed women's gymnastics coach at the University of California at Santa Barbara, was a passenger on the ill-fated American Airlines flight that crashed into the Pentagon. I ask that you keep her family, friends and the UC-Santa Barbara gymnastics team in your thoughts and prayers. A memorial fund has been set up in Mari-Rae's name, if you would like to make a donation, please send it to: Mari-Rae Sopper Memorial Gymnastics Fund c/o Harris Bank of Palatine 50 North Brockway Palatine, IL 60067 Attention: Eric Eimen Please make checks payable to the Mari-Rae Sopper Memorial Gymnastics Fund. Just as the nation is trying to move on, we in the gymnastics community are doing the same. I am happy to report that the United States took home three medals at the recent Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia. Congratulations to Hollie Vise of World OlympiC Gymnastics for winning bronze on both uneven bars and balance beam, and to Brett McClure of Team Texaco-USOTC for his bronze medal on the pommel horse. The U.S. team also fared well at the World University Games. Sean Townsend finished fourth in the all-around while Steve McCain placed ninth. At the World Games in Akita, Japan, Rhythmic National Champ Jessica Howard qualified for all four event finals, ending up in fifth place in both clubs and ball and seventh in rope and hoop. In trampoline and tumbling, all eight of the U.S. athletes made it to the finals. Top finishers were Jackie Rakowska who was fourth in women's tumbling and Jared Olsen who was fifth in men's tumbling. These are impressive international results and position us well at this point in the Olympic cycle. Our athletes are making a name for themselves and our federation and will continue to do so leading up to Athens. The next event on the USA Gymnastics calendar is the Reese's Gymnastics Cup which takes place December 1 in Houston. USA Gymnastics has invited premier gymnasts from around the world to compete in this entertainment-style team competition. Among the competitors scheduled to compete are Olympians Shannon Miller, John Roethlisberger and many other national and international stars. National and local Houston celebrities including Bela Karolyi will judge the competition. The 2001 Reese's Gymnastics Cup will be televised on NBC on December 9. Please visit www.usagymnastics.org for more information on the event and how to purchase tickets. We'd love to see ya'll there! As we come together for Thanksgiving, let's take time to reflect on the blessings in our life and remember the victims of this horrible tragedy. Enioy the holiday season! ~ { ~. R/DECEMBER

Introducing the Newest Grip on the Bars! ~t;

Designed and manufactured with assistance from National Team Coaches, the Just Right by Gibson is the newest idea in Ladies Uneven Bar Grips. The Just Right is cut slightly narrower for great contact with the bar and reduces side to side rolling of the grip for athletes with smaller hands The single buckle design assures a firm, tight fit at the wrist, and eliminates the constant adjustment necessary with velcro strap grips.

the Goodwill Games all-around gold medal with a score of 36.854. The silver and bronze medals went to Russian Olympic Gold Medalists Svetlana Khorkina with 36.617 and Elena Zamolodchikova with 36.312. "Today was good for Sabina because there were no mistakes," said Octavian Belu, Cojocar's coach. "I congratulated her, but told her that we must forget this result because there will be another Svetlana and Elena in two months at the World Championships." Competition was intense and came down to the final routines. Khorkina lead after the first rotation after a stunning bar routine that earned a 9.737, the highest mark of the evening on all events. Zamolodchikova took the lead after the second rotation, but a fall on beam pushed her into third. Cojocar was on top going into the third and final rotations and an impressive floor routine clenched the title for her. Thirteen-year-old Carly Patterson from the USA and World Olympic Gymnastics entered the final rotation in second place, earning the highest beam score of the evening of a 9.562. However, falls on floor knocked her into seventh. "I really wanted a medal bad," said a disappointed Patterson. "The floor was a little hard but that didn't really bother me. I don't know what happened. I can't give up. I will keep going. I was happy with my first three rotations, especially beam." "Basically she was right there," said Marchenko. "There was a lot of pressure. It was a tough competition. Most importantly, she learned a lesson from the performance and that's why we're here." USA's 14-year-old Kaitlin White, also from World Olympic, placed ninth with a score of 33.218. Her top score was a 9.156 on vault. "Overall, this was a good experience for me to compete against the best in the world," said White. "It's good to see how they handle everything and hopefully I'll learn from my mistakes." "It was a good performance for Kaitlin," said Marchenko. BER/DECEMBER

showed she could compete against 's best gymnasts and that's important to take home."

MEN'S All-AROUND Romanian Olympian Marian Dragulescu earned the men's all-around gold medal with a score of 56.048. Taking the silver medal was Huang Xu from China with 55.999 followed by two-time world champion Ivan Ivankov from Belarus with 55.948. "This is my biggest win ever," said Dragulescu. "I was glad that I did my job. This is a good win for me before Worlds. I hope to go there and win a medal, too." The top American finish was earned by McClure who finished sixth with a score of 55.049. McClure was a last minute replacement in the all-around for Alexander Beresch, the 2000 Olympic All-Around Bronze Medalist, who withdrew due to a shoulder injury. China and Russia were first alternates, but turned down the position. "I think this was a good meet and I had a lot of fun," said McClure. "It was a good experience. At first when they told me I was doing all-around I got a little scared, but then I realized there was no pressure, so I think I had a little advantage being the alternate and walking in with no expectations. I had a good time, and things went pretty well for me. My goal was to be top six and I met that goal." 2001 U.S. National Champion Sean Townsend from Team Texaco-Houston spent much of the meet in the top six, but struggled on floor and ended up eighth with 54.574. 2000 Olympian Stephen McCain from Team Texaco USOTC finished tenth with 53.235.

WOMEN'S EVENT FINALS Russian 2000 Olympic Gold and Silver Medalist Zamolodchikova earned gold medals on both vault and floor with 9.393 and 8.950, respectively. "I am very happy to win tonight," said Zamolodchikova. "I am glad to have done the vault well since it is a new horse. I know I want to compete for a long time in gymnastics and I am really hoping for a second Olympics." (ontinued on page 22

the men's side and Anna Dogonadze from Germany on the women's side with 68.00. American Ryan Weston from Chubbock, Idaho, finished seventh with 66.80 while Erin Maguire from Pocatello, Idaho, placed eighth. "I learned from this competition that I am definitely good enough to compete with the top competitors in the world," said Weston. "I am not satisfied with seventh and I knew I could've been up higher and possibly in the medals, but I had a great time here and it was a really good experience to compete in front of an audience this big." "It's awesome to be here with all of these Olympic and World champiOns," said Maguire. "I've been nervous all week but it's been a good experience and I've learned a lot. Hopefully it will help me down the line. My long term goals are to train for the 2003 Worlds and I would like to make the 2004 Olympic squad."

floor exercise with Svetlana Khorkina, World and European Uneven Bars ion, earned the bars gold medal with 9.712. Taking the silver was her Russian teammate Natalia Ziganshina with 9.425 while Hollie Vise earned bronze with 9.212. "I'm so happy to get a medal," said Vise. "I was really glad to hit my routine and I did the best I could do. It was really exciting to be on the medals stand with Khorkina. This is a great experience for me." In the balance beam event, the gold medal was earned by Sun Xiaojiao of China with 9.662. She was followed by Anna Pavlova, the 13-year-old Russian sensation with 9.062. Vise was third with 8.887 while teammate Patterson was fifth with 8.687.

MEN'S EVENT FINALS Jordan Jovtchev, Olympic bronze medalist from Bulgaria, earned gold on men's floor with 9.375 followed by Dragulescu with 9.312 and Russian Olympian Alexei Bondarenko with 9.237. McClure finished eighth with 8.5. "Everybody kind of struggled on floor," said Jovtchev, who resides in the Norman, Oklahoma. "I am happy though with my performance because I trained hard and I hit it." Wmning gold on pommel horse was Olympic and World Champion Marius Urzica from Romania with 9.762. Taking second place was Huang Xu from China with 9.412 and McClure was third with 9.362. "I expected to win," said Urzica. "I hoped I could get the gold medal and then stay on another few years until the Olympics in Greece." In the still rings, reigning Olympic Gold Medalist Szilvester Csollany from Hungary, a rings specialist, took the title with 9.775. Finishing in second was Ivankov with 9.7 while Jovtchev finished third with 9.687. American Jason Furr from Houston Gymnastics Academy took sixth place with a dean routine that earned a 9.337. The men's vault gold medal was earned by Lu Bin of China with 9.550. Vaults from two different families were performed and scores were averaged. Poland's Leszek Blanik, who won the Olympic bronze medal in Sydney on vault, took second with a score of 9.525. Third place went to Dragulescu with 9.387. Furr placed seventh with 8.575.

Huang Xu from China won the parallel bars competition with a score of 9.675. Earning the silver medal was Nikolai Kryukov with 9.450 and the bronze went to Ivankov, former world champion from Belarus, with 9.187. Furr placed eighth. McClure performed a solid high bar routine, earning fourth place with 9.625. The high bar gold medal went to Australian hometown favorite Philippe Rizzo with 9.737. Rizzo also won gold on the high bar at the World University Games in Beijing. The silver medal was earned by 1999 AllAround World Champion Kryukov from Russia with 9.712 while the bronze went to Huang Xu from China with 9.687. "I was so happy to stay on the bar because I've never been so nervous," said McClure. "I was a lot more nervous for this than I was at U.S. Championships. Following Olympic gold, silver and bronze medalists is scary because I've always thought I didn't belong here, but now I'm so happy that I'm actually with these guys and able to hit a routine and place among them. My routine was very dean except for the dismount, and at this level it all comes down to the dismount. I have some work to do now. This was a great preparation and confidence builder for the World Championships."

In rhythmic all-around competition, Irina Chashchina was near flawless in earning the gold medal with 113.550. Russian teammate Alina Kabaeva, world champion and Olympic bronze medalist, placed second with 112.6. Winning the bronze medal was Simona Peychevea from Bulgaria with 107.975. Three-time U.S. rhythmic national champion Jessica Howard, from International Rhythmic Gymnastics in Jacksonville, Fla., placed sixth with 100.25. "It was a very good experience for me to be here," said 17-year-old Howard. "I know that I need to go back and work really hard. I can do a lot better, especially on my first two events, but the last two I pulled up a little bit. Hopefully in the next few years with a lot of work I'll be up there and be more consistent." Rhythmic event finals competition was dominated by Russians. Winning the hoop was Irina Chashchina with 28.525. Ball, dubs and rope gold medals were earned by Alina Kabaeva, world champion and 2000 Olympic Games bronze medalist. She scored 28.725 on ball, 29.2 on dubs and 28.875 on rope. Howard, coached by Efrossina Anguelova, placed sixth in hoop, fifth in ball and dubs and seventh in rope.

A Lot of peopLe were having problems, it's still the first year of competing with the new Code of Points so it wasn't the start value that got you a medal, it was who could stay on and have the least amount of execution deductions, and that's what I did. AMERICAN Games was such a great experience. It's a lot different watching it on TV then actually being a part of it. When I was competing it felt like any other competition except I was standing next to Olympic medalists. It felt good to be one of the athletes at the games, and come back with a medal.

USA Gymnastics: What was it like taking second all-around at Championships and earning your first spot on the World Championships Team?

9reH mcClure: It felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I had been tnjing for so long and just not able to put evenjthing together, it felt good to be able to do what I knew I was capable of doing. USA Gymnastics: It seems like you're having a really great year taking second allaround at the U.S. Championships, earning a spot on the World Championships team, and winning a medal at the Goodwill Games. Has your training changed or is it just now coming together for you?

9reH mcCIUfe: Not much in my training has changed, I just think I am a Little more focused and put together routines that I know I can hit. It seemed like in the past I was never confident in my routines and it showed with my competitions. USA Gymnastics: What is your schedule like on a normal day?

9reH mcClure: On Monday and Wednesday we have practice from 10 to 1 and 4 to 6. Tuesdays and Fridays we have 8 to 8:45. 10 to 1., and 4 to 6. Thursdays are our light days and we come into the gym from 10 to 11:30, and Saturdmj workout is from 10 to 12:30. USA Gymnastics: What's it like training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center and being surrounded by other great athletes?

The sixth World Games took place in Akita, Japan, August 16-26. Held every four years, the World Games showcases Rhythmic Gymnastics and the non-Olympic Trampoline & Tumbling sports of Power Tumbling, Double MiniTrampoline, and Synchronized Trampoline. USA Gymnastics Executive Director, Ron Froehlich, is President of the World Games and oversees the organization of the competition, which features a wide variety of other sports, including Sports Acrobatics, Field Archery, Powerlifting, Body Building, Karate and Bowling, just to name a few. In Men's Tumbling, Jared Olsen finished fifth overall in a field of 11 men, with a score of 33.00. In preliminary action, Jared was in eighth after the compulsory, but moved up to fifth with his optional pass, finishing prelims with a total score of 63.60. Jackie Rakowska was one of only four women competing in Women's Tumbling. She was in first place following preliminary competition with a score of 62.90, but fell to fourth in the finals behind strong competition from Russia, Great Britain and Belarus. Her final score was 30.70. In Men's SynchrOnized Trampoline, the USA pair placed sixth, moving up from eighth place in the preliminary round. Nic Marlin and Peter Dodd earned scores of 81.00 in prelims and 44.70 in finals. Eleven countries were

represented in the Men's Synchro event. In Women's Synchro, the team of Kim Poling and Jaime Strandmark finished in seventh place overall. Teams from nine different countries participated in the event. Kim and Jaime scored an even 77.00 in the preliminary round, setting them up nicely for the final round, where they posted a score of 43.70. In Men's Double Mini-Trampoline, David Ford was in second place after prelims, but finished sixth overall. He scored 63.00 in the preliminary round, facing a field of athletes from 10 countries, finishing with a score of 62.30 in fin.als. Representing the USA in the Women's Double Mini competition, Tara Sewell faced a controversial decision that ultimately cost her the bronze medal. Tara was in fourth place after preliminaries, with a score of 61.20. After the final round, where a violation of the Repeat Rule was in question, Tara was informed that she had been given credit for the skill, putting her temporarily in third place overall. However, following a reversal of the ruling just prior to the awards presentation, Tara was bumped down to seventh place, with a final score of 60.60. U.s.Rhythmic National dlampion, Jessica Howard qualified for all four event finals including ball, clubs, rope, and hoop. She moved up from prelims in rope going from eight to seventh place with a final score of 25.350. In hoop, she maintained seventh position in both prelims and finals to finish with a score of 24.250. In clubs she was in fourth place after prelims but moved to fifth after finals with a score of 25.550. Jessica was seventh after her preliminary ball routine and moved to fifth after finals with a score of 25.400. Olga Karmansky also competed for the USA and finished 12th in rope, 17th in hoop, and 19th in clubs and ball during the preliminary competition. RESULTS 01 page 46

Host country and current Olympic champion China won the team competition with an overall score of 172.15 while Japan and Korea rounded out the top three. Opening on the parallel bars, Aad DHavSa .. and 2001 U.S. Champion Soan Townsono were able to break nine points, both scoring 9.15. Team captain SIiOPHOn mcCam had a fall in his routine, while Jason Pu .... landed a score of 8.9. Townsend would struggle during the next two events-high bar and floor-before a superb finish in which he scored 9.1 on pommel horse, 9.425 on rings and 9.3 on vault. The rest of the U.S. team followed suit and turned in strong performances on the rings, where the lowest score was 9.1 by McCain. Bhavsar was \ strong in four of the five rotations he competed in \ for the U.S. After missing his release (Kohlman 1 1/1 \ twisting Kovacs), the 20year-old Ohio State student came back to score a 9.125 on floor, 9.4 on pommel horse and 9.2 on rings. "The guys fought hard from start to finish," said head coach Kevin Mazeika. "It's a difficult position being put in the first session. We had our mistakes but I was continued on page 43

Ricky Deci will

"be ReDleDl"bered for lus Stnile USA Gymnastics is very sad to report that 13-year-old Ricky Deci from StaHord, Texas, a member of the USA Gymnastics men's junior national team (12-13 age group), collapsed and died October 11, at the U.S. Olympic Training Cen ter in Colorado Springs, Colo. "Ricky was a talented and promising young athlete who was full of life and had a huge smile," said Dennis McIntyre, Junior National Team Coordinator for USA Gymnastics. "He was a joy to be around." "This is a real tragedy and loss for the USA Gymnastics family," said Bob Colarossi, President of USA Gymnastics. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Ricky's family and friends at this difficult time." CPR was administered and Deci was taken to Memorial Hospital where further measures failed to revive him. According to the Rocky Mountain News, "The coroner's office found no visible clues why the teen's heart stopped and said it would take several weeks to make a final determination of death. The medical examiner wrote that the most common finding when a healthy young athlete dies suddenly is a probable cardiac arrhythmia, or malfunction of the electrical conduction system of the heart." Deci was ranked second on the men's junior national team in the 12-13 age division and was participating in the USA Gymnastics Junior National Team Training Camp. He trained with Hideo Mizoguchi at Champions Gymnastics in Houston.

proud of the way the guys fought through them and were able to finish strong. It is a good start for us internationally, especially at this point in the quadrennium and with this young group." 2000 Olympians Townsend and McCain landed big performances at the men's allaround, giving the U.S. men's gymnastics team one of the best international showings in recent history. -Kevin Mazeika, Leading the charge was head coach Townsend who tied with China's Zheng Lihui for fourth place overall, finishing with a score of 56.55. McCain meanwhile finished a respectable ninth, giving the U.S. two finishers in the top ten. "This is a major victory for the U.S. men's gymnastics team," said an elated coach Mazeika. "One year out following the Olympic Games and we've showed that we're right there knocking on the door. This is a great morale boost for these two and is redemption for our showing in the team competition." Townsend and McCain were able to show their routines in front of the FIG Technical Committee who were there to watch the competition. This was a positive boost for the USA Men's Team that will compete at the World Championships this fall. China's Yang Wei would claim gold medal honors with an overall score of 57.25, while Japan's Hiroyuki Tomita and Naoya Tsukahara would finish tied for second with a score of 56.750. Townsend's night began with a spectacular routine in the parallel bars as the 21-year-old gymnast nailed the landing and earned a score of 9.625, which tied him for first with Lihui following the first rotation. His 9.625 would end up being the highest score of the evening on parallel bars. He followed that with strong routines on the high bar and floor (9.45), his lower start value (9.3) was his only weakness that kept him out of the medals (8.95). He would then finish the evening in much the same way he started, scoring a 9.525 on rings followed by a 9.5 on vault. "It was an awesome experience," said Townsend, following his best international finish. ''To be out there with that type of crowd and enthusiasm is what really drives me as a gymnast. Once I hit that opening routine, I knew I was in for a good night. That took all the pressure off." McCain was steady throughout the evening, scoring a high of 9.4 in the pommel horse. In seventh going into the final rotation, McCain slipped back a little after missing a connection that lowered his start value on the high bar. But overall , a good finish for someone who contemplated retirement following the 2000 Olympic Games. "I couldn't be happier for Steve," said Mazeika. "He's been the driving force on this team and to see him do well is a result of him re-committing himself to the sport."

9rell mcClure: If I didn't move out here, then I don't believe I would have gotten this far. I felt I had to surround myself with the best to be able to compete with the best. So far it seems to be working.

USA Gymnastics: As a member of the World Championships Team, what are your goals for 2001 Worlds?

greH mcClure: Hitting all of my routines that I compete. If I've done that, then I know I have done my job. I would just like to prove to myself that I belong on the competition floor with the top guys in the world. I have worked hard ever since I started this sport and now it's time for me to create my own destiny.

USA Gymnastics: What is your favorite event and why?

9reH mcClure : High bar is my favorite because that event takes the least amount of strength, you have time during routines to just enjmj the feeling of swinging around. USA Gymnastics: What is your favorite skill in gymnastics?

USA Gymnastics: How often do you see your family?

USA Gymnastics: What are your strengths as a gymnast? 9rell mcClure: I think my strength in gJjmnastics is practice. I am venj efficient in my workouts; I walk in with the motivation of getting all assignments done in the least amount of turns possible. I think that helps in competition as well because you have only that one tnj when you raise your hand. USA Gymnastics: What are your goals in gymnastics?

USA Gymnastics: After you've completed your career in gymnastics what would you like to do?

grell mcClure: I am not quite certain on what I would like to do after gymnastics but I am interested in earning a business degree and starting a business. USA Gymnastics: Can you give other gymnasts advice on how to achieve success and be the best they can be?

9reH mcClure: The best advice I think I can give other gymnasts is always work hard. Just remember you are doing this for yourself to prove to yourself how far you can take it. If you work hard and keep working hard no matter what, things will always payoff. Its always a learning experience, never get too down on yourself, never get too excited, just take everything you have been through to help you in the future.

My parents, Les and Judy, run their own company, McClure and Sons Inc. They have always supported me doing gJjmnastics, ever since I started. Well, actually my dad made an agreement with me saying that if I did 10 handstand push ups he would let me start gJjmnastics.
