STEPPING UP AS A LEADER
Sean is taking a new role these days on the USA Men's National Team. No longer he is an up-and-coming young guy, he's now considered a veteran of the team at age 22 and is settling into his new role very well. Sean talks about his goals for the future!
MEN'S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Led by the one-two all-around punch of U.S. national team members Jamie Natalie and Raj Bhavsar, the Buckeyes proved too much for top-ranked Oklahoma. OSU notched a season-high 218.125 to keep their StJohn Arena record intact- they haven't lost a meet there since 1995-and take the 2001 NCAA crown.

I recently attended the 2 001 N CAA Men's N a tiona l Championships in Colwnbus, Ohio. It was very exciting to watch the collegiate men compete the new FIG Code of Points, and it is apparent that we are on track for interna tional success. Ohio State captured its third collegiate championship title, barely defeating #1 ranked Oklahoma. OSU's Jamie Natalie and Raj Bhavsat~ both national team members, were standouts in the all-around competition. I'd like to congratulate all of the collegiate programs for a very strong season.

By Kim Zmeskal
Kim Zmeskal is the first American World All-Around Champion . She won the title at the 1991 World Championships in Indianapolis. Kim earned a team bronze medal at the 1992 Olympic Games and was a three-time National Champion. She trained under Bela Karolyi and later Mary Lee Tracy. Kim also coached class through elite gymnasts and is looking forward to owning her own gym someday with her husband, Chris Burdette.

I enrolled at what would soon become Karolyi's Gymnastics in 1982 for one reason-it looked like a huge playground, and I wanted to play. Many ask me at what age it is necessary for girls to get serious about their training or how many hours they should train. While I know that eventually a time commitment is required to reach one's highest potential, the most important skill to master as a beginner is to love gymnastics. It needs to be fun! There is no way that I would have stuck with this sport as long as I have if I wasn't able to develop the passion first. Of course, it's easier to find your fire when you see others who display their own. During my first couple of years in the gym, I was able to witness firsthand the magic that was being made through the Karolyi's and Mary Lou Retton. They taught me MAY/ JUNE

what it meant to dream, and I mean DREAM BIG! Seeing that it was possible for a dynamic, sub-5footer to become Olympic champion sparked my will to become the best Kim Zme:;t<al I could become. While I can accept personal boundaries, I will not accept mediocrity. Even today, I sign autographs with my personal motto, "Dream BIG ... work hard." As we all know, to make our dreams a reality; we have to do more than make a wish list and pray. This is where the "work hard" part comes in. I know as a kid, I didn't want to do all of the conditioning, or struggle to be the last in my group to make a glide kip, or go for my first back handspring on the high beam. The discipline that I learned as I pushed through these situations made me strong enough for the long practices it took to become World Champion. I certainly was lucky to have great teanunates in which to share those intense workouts. As teanunates, we looked to who could do a skill or routine the best and used that as our benchmark. Alyssa Beckerman and I joked about how great of a gyrrmast we'd be if we could combine our talents. I visualized swinging bars with the ease that she did, and she did likewise with my vaults. We also were each other's biggest cheerleaders and supporters on a daily basis. Gymnastics not only has taught me what it means to be a teanunate, it has given me some of the very best, most treasured friendships I could ask for. In fact, six of the eight bridesmaids in my wedding were former teanunates. My career has also defined what success really means to me. If someone were to ask me what it meant back in 1991, after winning the World Championships All-Around title, I would have said, "standing on the award podium." Of course, I am very proud of the titles and medals that 1 won, but I didn't learn the meaning of victory until I experienced a struggle. It took two retirements and comebacks for me to really understand what I had achieved in the sport. I faced not living up to expectations in the '92 Games, a tom ACL which caused me to give up my '96 Olympic dream, and a long road back to competing at the '98 Nationals, to finally understand that I didn't need a gold medal around my neck to have won. I've learned to enjoy the process, the daily ups and downs. Even now, when my days in the gym are to help others reach their goals, I will always be on the right path if I do what gymnastics taught me as a little girl. .. be the best Kim Zmeskal Burdette that I can be! Will, TEN. 0 CLASSIC
501 BLUES
The TEN. 0
Just imagine grips that fit with the comfort of your oldest, most faded jeans-from the first swing . Consider baby suede padding , NEW SOFT SWING blue foam insert for those who need a little extra softness, a distinctive wrist strap and you have a 501 BLUES . Most gymnasts want a grip that's soft a nd easy to break in. They also want them to be durable. The 501 does this better than any other grip on the market AND they do it with style and good pricing.
CLASSIC is the most durable grip on the market. We know - our customers talk. Of course , it takes longer to break-in The CLASSIC grips because of the low stretch fac tor of the heavy duty leather. In fact , in recent independent laboratory tests the TEN. 0 classic leather was compared to the leather in other popular grips and was found to withstand 18% greater pulling stress. If you are a hard training, big trick gymnast who doesn 't like her grips to stretch or doesn 't like to buy grips frequently we recommend using THE CLASSIC. Literally thousands of gymnasts do! You will love the baby suede padding, the custom designed webbing for a fresh new look , and the new soft swing insert.

Avery's words proved prophetic when his Buckeyes, led by the one-two all-around punch of U.S. national team members Jamie Natalie and Raj Bhavsar, proved too much for top-ranked Oklahoma. Backed by a supportive crowd of more than 1,500, OSU notched a season-high 218.125 to keep their St. John Arena record intact-they haven't lost a meet there since 1995-and take the 2001 NCAA crown, their first since Avery assumed the head coaching spot in 1998 and the third in school history.

'When the program is tumed over to you, you only hope that you can achieve this kind of status," Avery said. "~'s very, very rewarding but also a relief because, it's like, 'Wow, we did it,' We've been in a position [to IMn] a couple of times before and it didn't happen. I feel very proud that we could pull it out tonight, in front of a home crowd ." After putting forth a conservative prelim line-up, Avery let loose in finals, grabbing the early lead with a stunning parallel bars performance punctuated by Bhavsar's nearperfect set (double pike dismount, stuck cold) which eamed a 9.65, the highest mark awarded this season. But the Buckeyes momentum almost came to a crashing halt on high bar, when Michael Evans, Jamie Houle and Jay Nardelli bounced off the bar, forcing the Bucks to count a fall (in the NCAA, six gymnasts compete on each event and the top four scores count towards the team tota/). But, as they would all night, Bhavsar and Natalie

tumed the tide, coming through with clutch performances that kept OSU ahead of the paCk, a spot they would never relinquish. 'They just carried us all night long," Avery said of his all-arounders. "Every time someone else didn't do a great job, they jumped in and took over. I'm really proud of them." In prelims, Oklahoma, which had held the number one ranking since early February, set a new NCAA season-high (218.3), and, at the midway point in team finals, the Sooners were actually on pace to top that total, despite a sloppy parallel bars performance. "I looked at the scores after three rotations and I thought we were in good shape, heading into our three best events," OU coach Mark Williams said . "I absolutely believed that we were going to win. I just thought we had the better team." And, after OU's stellar floor performance where the Sooners counted nothing lower than a 9.1 , Williams had reason to be hopeful. (onlinued on page 34

MEN'S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS continued from poge 32
Pommel horse problems plagued the Sooners but senior Steve Van Etten capped the rotation with a solid 9.3. Heading to their final event, rings, the Sooners were neckand-neck with the Buckeyes. To top Oklahoma on one of their best events, OSU knew they needed the vault rotation of their life, and they got it. Darren Lynch and Bhavsar stuck their matching Rudis (front handspring with 1- ~ twist) cold for 9.25 and 9.35, respectively, but it was Natalie who sealed the deal with a super Kasamatsu full (9.375), a vault he'd only performed twice before in competition . "I always thought it was going to come down to the last event," Avery said. "Going in, I told my coaches, 'I don't know, their rings to our vault,' because [Oklahoma) is great on rings, but our guys did a great job on vault. That's obviously our season best on vault and that was a grmt, great time for them to pull that out." "I have to congratulate Ohio State, they had the meet of their lives," Williams conceded. "We tried to put the pressure on them as much as possible but they had the better meet and they put an exclamation [mark) on it with their vaulting performance." In addition to wrapping up the team title for Ohio State, Natalie and Bhavsar topped the all-around standings, scoring 55.70 and 55.15, respectively. Their finish also eamed them U. S. team berths to this summer's World University Games in Beijing, China. (The remainder of the team will be decided based on results of June's national qualifier.) Though he lost steam in the anticlimactic event finals, Natalie's near-perfect
NCAA experience was capped by the 2001 Nissen-Emery award win, an honor given annually to the nation's top senior gymnast, and a letter of acceptance from Ohio State's medical school. "This has been one heck of a week. It's going to be hard to top," he laughed. "I couldn't have asked for a better ending: team champs. [Winning the allaround) is just icing on the cake." Almost overlooked in the fierce battle for first and second were 1997-98 champs Califomia-Berkeley, who finished a surprise third with 216.775, bettering their season-high by almost three points. "This is the fifth year in a row that we've had our highest score the last day of the season, " Cal coach Barry Weiner said. "After three events we were in sixth, but my team just kept battling and never gave up." Fourth -place Michigan, ranked number one at the season's start, never quite recovered from a rash of knee injuries that cost them stars Justin Toman (who also underwent shoulder surgery in April) and Kevin Roulston. "This was a tough year," head coach Kurt Golder admitted. "But next year, next year we're going to be there." There is no next year for Michigan State, who celebrated their program's final year with their first NCAA team finals berth since 1966. Ranked as high as third during the regular season, MSU is simply the most recent in a long line of men's collegiate programs to fall victim to Title IX. "I couldn't be more proud of the performances here," head coach Rick Atkinson said. "Everyone at MSU has been very, very supportive this season but, unfortunately, pride in our performance and
the continuation of our program completely unrelated."
EVENT FINALS With six athletes in finals, more than any other school, Oklahoma entered the final day of competition looking for redemption but, despite racking up 10 All-American awards, a number that tied their school record , and two runner-up positions (seniors Brendan O'Neil on floor and Van Etten on pommel horse), the heavily-favored Sooners left Columbus disappointed. "I told my guys they've got nothing to be ashamed of, but rt's definitely hard," coach Williams admrtted. "I think we did ourselves proud, but we're obviously leaving wrthout what we wanted most: a national trtle." U.S. national team member Clay Strother from Minnesota, recovering from a recent ankle injury, claimed the floor and pommel horse titles . Senior strongman Chris Lakeman (Penn State) claimed the still rings title (9.55), thanks in part to prelim leader Darren Lynch's dismount disarray. Lynch , from Ohio State, meanwhile, tumed in a booming Rudi on vault, stuck cold for a 9.5 and the win. Teammate Bhavsar easily claimed the parallel bars crown (9 .412) and sophomore Michael Ashe (Califomia) nabbed his second -straight high bar title (9.512). "I was excited that I could repeat," Ashe said, "but I'm more excited [about the team finish). All season long we never had a single great meet. All season long we kept saying that if we could put a hit meet together we could contend. I'm glad we could actually do that."

PETITIONS Petitions to enter the National Championships or to be placed onto the World Championships Team, other than through the competitive process described above, will be considered by the Men's Program Committee. A petition onto the World Championships Team may only be submitted by the athlete who is the highest ranking u.s. gymnast from the 2000 Olympic Games. If an athlete were petitioned directly onto the World Championships Team, this athlete would displace the fourth ranked gymnast from the Competitive Results, leaving only three athletes selected based on their score. In order to be considered by the Men's Program Committee, petitions must be submitted in writing to the USA Gymnastics' national office as soon as practical after the athlete becomes aware of his inability to participate in the applicable competition. The petition must state the specific injury, illness or unusual circumstance, which prohibited the athlete from participating in the competitive process. In the case of a petition based upon an injury or illness, the petition must be accompanied by a physician's statement, and the nature and extent of that injury or illness is subject to verification by a doctor selected by USA Gymnastics.

Introducing the Newest Grip on the Bars! <p
Designed and manufactured with assistance from National Team Coaches, the Just Right by Gibson is the newest idea in Ladies Uneven Bar Grips. The Just Right is cut slightly narrower for great contact with the bar and reduces side to side rolling of the grip for athletes with smaller hands The single buckle design assures a firm, tight fit at the wrist, and eliminates the constant adjustment necessary with velcro strap grips.
