A FRESH SlART The beginning of a new quadrennium always brings change and opportunity. Many changes have already taken place, and the strategic planning process we are currently engaged in will surely direct many more.

We all owe a debt of gratitude to Sandy Knapp for her leadership over the past eight years and the countless hours she devoted as a volunteer to USA Gymnastics. Ron Froehlich has stepped right in as our new Chairman. His business skills and spcrts experience will surely provide guidance over the next four years.

The Program Committees drive program direction. We are currently conducting summits with each discipline to engage national team coaches and committee members in the development of the quad plan as well as to conduct a forum for suggestions for improving their working relation<~i ~ with the national office.

A special welcome to National Travel Systems who recently were awarded the contract as travel provider for USA Gymnastics. National Travel Systems is developing travel packages for many USA Gymnastics events, including the upcoming U.S. Gymnastics Championships and National Congress. NTS will provide an on-site event management team for athletes, coaches, staff and members at most USA Gymnastics events. In addition to the full service staff at its headquarters in Texas, National Travel Systems will provide an in-house travel agent at USA Gymnastics headquarters to book national team and staff travel. Special congratulations go to Dominick Minicucci. A member of the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Teams, Dominick was recently elected by our Athlete's Council to represent all of the USA Gymnastics athletes on the Athletes Advisory Council (AAC) of the United States Olympic Committee. Two weeks ago he was elected by the USOC AAC to the Board of Directors of the USOC with voting privileges. Well done, Dominick!

by Toby Towson This title is a misnomer, because actually there are many more than 101 cartwheels. In fact, the variety is endless, and there are an infinite number of possible cartwheels restricted only by lack of imagination. This article will discuss one of many approaches to teaching cartwheels and also give a framework for exploring all the possible variations of the basic cartwheel.

To begin, we need a good healthy bod,S' with some flexibility, pJzn::ngtIl, wri ('S'Jor-ijnation. lr'iifh greater flexibility, increased strength, and intricate coordination, there will be moreflualeq;.ges am' possible variations. ~ a good place to sta.r:U,c mth an adequate warm-up which will stretch the body; wake up the muscles, stimulate the breath, and activate the joints, creating a physical readiness and mental desire to perform more difficult movements.

For beginners, it is important to teach the cartwheel with a step-by-step progression of skills. It is not necessary to be able to hold a handstand before learning a cartwheel, but it is important to be able to support tlle ody' weight briefly on the

arms, and for this purpose we can teach the teeter-totter and momentalY switch leg handstand. The teeter-totter is performed from a lunge position, arms raised, making a line (lever) from the hands through the body to the back foot.

The front leg, with a bent knee, supports most of the body's weight and acts as a fulcrum. As the gymnast tilts forward from the waist to place the hands on the floor in front of the foot, the back foot rjses in the air resembling the action of a teeteHutm: (or, if you prefer, a see saw).

Hands shrold be placed flat on the floor with .1noad held in a slightly lifted posi.1;,0n, just high enough to watch the hands, not too far from the foot which remains on the grow1d . If the hands are too far from the foot, it will be difficult to reverse the movement back to the original position with the arms raised overhead and the back foot flat on the floor.

It's a good idea to practice the teeter-totter exercise in rhythm as soon as possible, two counts to tilt forward and momentarily hold the middle position with hands flat on the floor, back leg raised so the body is inverted, and two more counts to reverse the movement and return to the original lunge with arms overhead. The arms should stay in line

throughout the exercise and not drop to the side.

Also, the gymnast should attempt to push the floor away with the hands when leaving the tripod position. It's also a good idea to try the teeter-totter with one leg and then the other. Most people will find it is easier to accomplish the teeter-totter on one side, but training the body on both sides for basic skills adds greatly to the overall coordination and increases the likelihood of success when attempting more difficult skills.

Once the basic teeter-totter has been more or less mastered it is time to try the switch leg handstand, although I use the term handstand loosely to mean weight supported on the arms for a brief moment. In this case, after the first half of the teeter-totter has been performed, while the weight of the body is supported on both hands and the front leg, the gymnast gives a small jump off the support leg and switches legs quickly in the air so that the leg which was in the air becomes the support leg. It is very important that the landing foot lands in the same spot where the original foot

was placed on the floor, not too far from the hands. This is the main mistake of beginners on this skill and, if the landing foot is too far from the hands, it is impossible to perform the second half of the teeter-totter movement and return to an upright position, in a lunge with the arms overhead.

For most people who learn to perform this teeter-totter and the switch leg maneuvel~ it' s a short step to a cartwheel. This basic cartwheel is a variety we'll call front-to-back cartwheet meaning if you are facing north at the beginning of the cartwheet you will face south after completing the cartwheel. For beginners, the main point is to get the hand and foot placement of the cartwheel correct as well as the starting and ending position, which is a lunge with arms raised overhead.

If the right leg is in front, the gymnast places the hands down a little to the right, with fingers facing the right side, and the right hand first, followed quickly by the left. This is a quarter turn to the floor. As the gynmast switches legs, the other quarter turn takes place so the gynmast comes up facing the opposite direction from the starting position in a mirror image to the starting shape.

The legs do not necessarily have to go high overhead at the beginninIY although this is not difficult for some children. Others can

develop this ability after learning to perform the correct hand and foot placement and basic coordination. Remember to explain that the foot which goes up first comes down first to avoid the common mistake of hopping on the front support leg. You may be able to ' use mats which come with hand and foot placements corresponding to the above directions. Or you may be able to draw hands or circles with chalk for the hand placement.

Another possible technique is to have the gynmast face a folded panel mat which is perpendicular to the body and perform the basic cartwheel by placing the hands sideways on the mat and flank jumping over the mat for the desired result.

Or you may have other tricks or ideas of your own which will facilitate learning the basic cartwheel. A little spotting is sometimes helpful for those who are having trouble or may fear rotating upside down.

Don' t give up too quickly with one approach, but don't be afraid to try something new if you're not getting results after some effort. And sometimes you just have to go back to basic warm-up drills until the body has enough strength, flexibility, and coordination to have greater success at learning the skill. Always have patience and look for something positive to encourage, moving step by step in the right direction and having fun getting there.

Genetic and Other Factors Reviewed

he American College of Sports Medicine recently published a study in its official monthly journal, Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise that assesses the influence of competitive sports of prepubertal growth. Much of the recent attention to the relative youth of participants in competitive sports can be traced to international media attention to the manner of recruitment used to find Olympic level athletes and train them early. The purpose of this study was to assess not only pubertal status, but genetic factors, birth weight, early childhood growth, the sport involved, hours spent training and age as well.

The team of researchers, led by Ras mu s Damsgaard, Uni versity of Copenhagen, Denmark, rea lized that previous studies had shown that growth is restricted and puberty delayed in so me sports and not in others. For this reason, it had been suggested in some arenas that female gymnasts should decrease training during puberty. "We know that hard training sometimes seems to have an adverse effect on growth and puberty," said Damsgaard. "But constitutional and nutri tional factors playa role, and we designed a study that wou ld provide some indication of predisposition in assessing the effects of sports participation on growth. " The Dan ish Sports Association provided contacts with sports clubs that sponsored well-regarded nationally or regionally co mpetitive training programs for children in swi mming, te nni s, team handball

• • • and gymnastics. Ten of the clubs selected boys and girls between the ages of nine and 13 years, and 184 (96 girls, 88 boys) agreed to participate. They were asked to provide birth date, birth weight, standing height and weight at age two to four, the height of their parents and the number of training hours per wee k. To reduce variation in reporting measurement, one examiner, using the Tanner scale, assessed the girls' stage of puberty; likewise a single pediatrician examined the boys, using the Prader measurement. The researchers then used a linear regression model to assess the sig nificance of age, target height, birth weight, height and body mass index (BMI) at age two to four, the sport, training hours and stage of puberty on actual height and current BMI. The analysis showed that target height, height at two to four years and the current stage of puberty were significant to actual height. In boys, BMI at two to four years and stage of puberty were significant to actual BMI, and in girls only BMI at two to four years was significant to actual BMI. The on ly difference in target height relative to the specific sport occurred in tennis players, where the target height for girls was significantly higher than in the other three sports.

The researchers concluded that in their relatively large sample, type of sport and number of training hours had no impact on size attained, whereas genetic factors, size attained before starti ng training and stages of puberty were important factors . They did find significant differences in height among the nine-to-13-year old children , but those differences also had existed at age two to four. The female gymnasts

were smaller than the female swimmers at both stages. Growth in infancy, said Damsgaard, depends on nutrition and prenatal factors, but from age two on, it is constant except for adverse events. This suggests that training for and participating in sport have no negative influence on growth.

Similarly, the number of hours spent training per week has little negative influence, suggested by the fact that both boys and girls trained in gymnastics significantly more than in the other sports. The results did not demonstrate any decrease in height or change in BMI among the four sports, although it must be noted that most of the children in the test trained less than the 1518 hour per week recommendation.

Prepubertal growth is not adversely affected by sport at a competitive level, noted the researchers. They indicated that their statistics point toward constitutional factors greatly influencing a child's choice of sport, explaining in part the selection of gymnastics by smaller girls and boys, and tennis for taller girls. Children are influenced by parental choice as well, which also bears out the theory of constitutional selection.

This year's NationaL Testing marks the ninth year of the TaLent Opportunity Program or TOP's for short. As aLways, a speciaL thanks to the nationaL staff and aLL the TOP's personneL. ALso a big thanks to the terrific

If your gym is not currently involved in the TOP's program, it is not readily apparent how pervasive the TOP's program has become in the past eight years. It has grown from a relatively "elite" aura into mainstream gymnastics culture. TOP's has become an excellent SUPPLEMENT to the Junior Olympic Program by providing additional motivation to gymnasts who aspire to higher fitness levels (through competitions in strength and flexi bility), through added dance training and a focus on BASIC skill training. TOP's also supplements the JO program by providing all levels of coaches with hands-on opportunities to work with our national staff. Finally, the TOP's program still serves as the vehicle for the exceptionally talented athletes to "rub shoulders" with the elite mystique - both through exposure to the elite coaching staff and through participation at elite level competition.

WHY BOTHER WITH A PROGRAM LIKE TOP'S? Simply, because it will make your athletes more competitive! As stated, the TOP's program is an excellent supplement to the JO program . We all know the effect an upcoming competition has on coaches and athletes to "get it in gear." We all struggle with keeping our athletes motivated to condition CORRECTLY and improve on flexibility. Most of us would like our athletes to aspire to a higher level of perfection in th~r ba~c s~ll~ body shapes and dance positions. So why not be involved in a program that requires all that?

One way to a successful TOP's program is not to create a separate program, but to integrate the TOP's program into your current JO system . Then you will have a national set of standards you can show to your parents and you will have physically more adept athletes.

any of you have already purchased an inflatable or two for your gym and are now wondering what the next step is. By now, you are using your inflatables to help develop your programs, increase your birthday party fees, and promote your gym at fairs and special events. But what's next? The answer may be to start

your own rental company separate from your gym. Why, you ask? Well, let me tell you some of the reasons that I started a new company.

Seven years ago, I started looking around for ways to increase my income to help get me ready for the increase in expenses that comes with three teenage

girls. You know the ones I'm talking about: college tuitions, cars, and maybe a little for my retirement! So, I started hmovative Inflatables and I was able to bring my children into the company as part owners. This allows me to do a lot of things that have saved me money.

First, it enabled me to move money out of my tax bracket and into a much lower

bracket, in most cases, with no social security tax. It also allowed me to lease cars through the company for my children (with what was previously considered tax dollars) and write off the insurance as well. Getting the idea? Did I mention that we have corporate meetings several times a year?

Our last one was this past November in the Bahamas! These are just a few of the expenses that you can write off with your new business. Cell phones, meals, gas, computers, and the list goes on and on. But, there is more ..

Need to move some of your profits from your C corporation to a lower tax bracket? By charging your gymnastics school for using the inflatables, you can move money from your high tax bracket, or the famous "double tax," and move it to the lower tax brackets of your children. How much money can you really expect to save? Well, let's look at some numbers: 'Y Let's say you have a $30,000 profit that you can either take out as payroll, or pay the corporate tax on it. The corporate tax doesn't make sense because the money stays in the company after you've paid the corporate tax.

Your gain? Zero! So, let's look at taking it out as payroll.

'Y You are in a 24% tax bracket and you have to pay the 7.5% social security tax, plus your company must also pay an additional 7.5%. So, it works out like this:

OUCH! Now, let's look at moving it out to your family company.

'Y You own 25% and your family owns the other 75%.

Here's how it unfolds:

AMUSEMENT, from page 17 Although my numbers might not be exactly right for your company, I think you get the picture. Talk to your accountant before doing anything on your own. He / she may have a few ideas that will assist you even more.

You'll notice that we managed to make a profit without even renting out a single inflatable! So, let's talk about renting a few inflatables. Why should people rent from you instead of the local rental company? The answer walks in your door every day. Clients!

Or, in this case, lots of kids. The clients who will rent are already coming to your facility and, right now, they are giving their money to someone else!

You can expect to rent to at least 10% of your clients, plus another 5% from people who attend a function where you had your inflatable. You do the numbers, and multiply them by at least $150.00 (rental fee). Now, you're increasing your profit and getting to keep more money than ever.

Inflatables and an amusement rental company are the perfect combination for any size gymnastics schooL You have little or no risk with the potential for a large return on your investment.

Think about it and stop that money from going somewhere else. If you maximize your clients the same way

you maXlIllize your gym space and time, you are sure to make money.

So, how much money can you expect to make over, say, three years? Using three inflatables: Castle Maze, 15' xIS' bow1cer, and 55' Caterpillar, renting them out for $125, $160, $220, twice a week, during a six-month period, will result in an income of over $50,000 on an investment of $12,000. This is a 350% gain on your investment!!

Remember, this does not include any additional income generated by using the pieces in your programs, birthday parties, or town fairs.

Inflatables are the perfect complement to your gymnastics school and will assist you in expanding your programs and income base. Don't wait for everyone else to have them before you decide it's a good idea. Start inflating your profits today!

II. BREVET COURSE Cheryl d istributed the list of judges who were invited to the Brevet Courses to the RTCCs. The letters have been sent to all participants.

Also distributed was a list of judges who are eligible to attend the National Course next summer.

III. ELITE PROGRAM REPORT Gary Anderson reported on the activities of the Elite Program. Gary requested that each RTCC spend some individual time with him to discuss the specific issues existing in each region. Gary talked about financially supporting the elite athletes in the region.

Gary explained the reasons for the changes in the elite calendar.

Because of the new Code of Points, the National Elite Committee decided not to conduct an American Classic in February. Elite Regional Clinics will be conducted, shared between regions, at which any athletes not currently on the National Team are eligible to participate in a "verification" process in the attempt to be added to the National Team. This verification process will be identical to the process used at the National Team Training Camps. There will be changes for the Na tional Testing Program that will be forthcoming from the National Elite Committee Meeting.

IV. NATIONAL JUDGES' COURSE C. Hamilton informed the committee that the tentative date for the course is June 27th to July 1st. The course site and dates will be confirmed before the end of the year.

NAWGJ REPORT - CAROLE IDE

NAWGJ Symposium is July 12-15 in Newport Beach, California. The

NAWGJ has a new web site (www.nawgj.org). Carole informed the committee that there are 13 new State Judging Directors and a few new Regional Judging Directors. She has spoken to all the NAWGJ officers to let them know that all technical information should go through the RTC. She requested that the WTC inform her of any problems in this area.

VI. ACTIVE STATUS CONCERNS The committee recommends that JCI send to the USAG office a list of all judges who have not submitted / completed their Active Status for 2000 by January 15, 2001. The office will then distribute this list to the State Chairman. Before removing any judge from a meet for not fulfilling their Active Status requirements, the State Chairman should check with the State Judging Director.

Motion: Recommendation that any of the following individuals who are also Level 10 or higher rated judges be exempt from filing an annual Active Status Card: National, Regional and State USAG Chairman; National, Regional or State NAWGJ Directors and a list of other individuals submitted by the Women's Technical Committee Chairman.

Clarification: Repulsion from the hands is not required. If there is repulsion, which results in the gymnast landing on feet first, she must return to a straight lying position on her back to receive no penalty.

Two attempts are allowed with the best score to COW1t.

The JO Committee has requested that the WTC develop deductions for the following changes in the Compulsory Uneven bar exercises, effective August 1, 2001:

OPTIONAL UNEVEN BARS Level 7 and 8: Motion: Recommendation to accept the following Jr. Olympic Committee proposal for Level 7 & 8 circling skills on Bars: That no penalty be applied for the performance of any B circling element that finishes in a handstand, with or without 1/2 (180°) turn (therefore becoming a C) at Level 7 or 8, effective immediately. (Example: Stalder circle to clear support = B, Stalder circle to Handstand = C) Motion: M. Dykes Second: C. Sielski PASSED Level 9 Bonus: Clarification: In order to give the +0.10 bonus for Special Connection if the two C elements do not have flight or turn, they must be different elements within the cOlmection" .

Example: Cast handstand hop grip change (C), Front Giant (C), Front Giant (C), Front Giant 1/ 2.(C), Award + 0.1 for Cast handstand hop grip change + Front Giant and + 0.1 for Front Giant + Front Giant 1/ 2.

Do not award any bonus for the combination of the two front giants.

Note: Under the original principle of C+C (both elements with turn or flight), the elements may be the same of different.

IX. OPTIONAL BALANCE BEAM & FLOOR EXERCISE CLARIFICATIONS Level 7: a. If a Level 7 gynmast uses a Handstand in the non-flight acro series and does not achieve vertical, apply the deduction of "up to 0.80" for failure to perform the requirement with a specific degree (angle) of amplitude (see the JO Technical Handbook, page 26, 1.) A deduction of up to 0.20 for "failure to hold the handstand for 2 seconds" could also be applied. b. If a Level 7 gynmast performs a split leap (pause), split leap (pause), wolf jump, credit would be given for an isolated leap as well as a gymnastics series (with a deduction for the pause - up to 0.4) Always compute to the benefit of the gymnast. c.

X. ELEMENT CLARIFICATION AND EVALUATION a.

The WTC requested assistance from the J.O. Committee in regards to a better description of the straddle seat circle (A) and the stalder circle (B). The following description was provided: To receive credit for a "stalder circle (B), the feet must pass back over the bar while the hips are still above the level of the bar. In addition, the shoulder an gle and the compressed stalder position must open. b.

New Elements

A list of new elements performed at the 1999 World Championships was printed in the April 2000 Technique, pages 42-44. If any the evaluations listed by FIG are already listed in the current JO Element Supplement, the JO value will be retained for this last season of the cycle. If any of the elements are not already in the JO Element Supplement, the FIG value will be awarded .

The new FIG Code of Points for 2001-2004 will be in effect only for the Elite Program in the Win ter/Spring of2001. None of the new difficulty values will be used at the Program for the 2000-2001 season, even if the value has been increased. The Program will begin a new cycle with new rule changes and difficulty values, beginning August 1, 2001 .

WOMEN'S TECHNICAL COMMITTEE SYMPOSIUM

A WTC symposium will be held after the Jr. OlympiC competitive season. K. Kelly was requested to find a site on either the May 25-27 or June 1-3 weekend. A Level 10 Re-Certification Course will be given in conjunction with the Symposium, as well as the NAWGJ Symposium in July. Additional Level 10 Re-certification courses may be added if necessary by request of the RTC to JCI.

Meeting adjoumed at 10 p.m. Saturday, October 29.

Next meeting is scheduled in conjunction with the WTC Symposium in the spring of2001.

Fees are as follows:

• Meet directors are to accept the form letter that states an individual has taken the safety course. The person is to receive this from the safety instructor at the time of the course. This is to be accepted in place of the safety card until such time the person receives their updated card.

1. Competition/exhibition with Junior age level competitors (no World Class)

• Meet directors are to accept the confirmation someone receives from the Internet when registering online. It will be three to four weeks before they receive their card in the mail.

• Online registration is instantaneous. As soon as the member receives the confirmation, their number is current and valid. They can not be denied access onto the floor because they do not have their current card.

• Meet directors are to accept the form letter issued from this office that states the individual is a current and valid professional member

MEMBERSHIP CARDS • You should expect your membership card in the mail three to four weeks after your number is entered into the computer system. We print cards and send them to the mailing house weekly.

• We have had numerous problems and glitches with the uniquery that selects and sorts the cards to be pri nted.

Some people have received more than one card, while others have received none. If you do not receive your membership card within four weeks of having an active number online, please contact us and we will re-issue.

USA Gymnastics Announces Men's Program Staff for 2001 USA Gymnastics is pleased to confirm men's program positions for 2001. Ron Brant (Colorado Springs, Colo.) has been named Senior National Team Coordinator, Dennis McIntyre (Columbus, Ohio) is Junior National Team Coordinator, Bo Morris (San Antonio, Texas) is the new Men's Program Manage r based at the Indianapolis headquarters and Vitaly Marinitch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was named head coach at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

"I am co nfid ent these men will utilize their vast gymnastics knowledge and experience to build stro ng programs and se rvice the needs of our men 's gymnastics community," said Bob Colarossi, President of USA Gymnastics.

Brant and McIntyre will be responsible for developin g and implementing the overall training program for the senior and junior nation al teams, respectively. They will plan and coo rdinate all national tea m training camps, serve as the resou rce people for gathering and exchanging information among coaches, and develop an education plan for the team . They will also consu lt with each national team athlete and coach to develop individual training plans and monitor t heir progress. Prior to their new positions, Brant was the head coach at the U.S. Olympic Training Center from 1990 through 2000, and McIntyre was the Men's Program Manager at USA Gymnastics from 1994 throug h 2000. Both have coac hed numerous U.S. Olympic and World Championship Team Members and have been involved in the USA Gymnastics men's program for over two decades.

In his new role as Men's Program Ma nager, Morris will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Age Group Competition Program , the J .O. National Championships, the Academic All-American Program , t he Foundation Scholarship Program and all Program Grants. He wi ll work closely with Ron GaLimore, Brant and McIntyre to plan and execute program development at all levels and oversee grassroots development. Morris has been the men's team head coach and developmental director of Alamo Gymnastics since 1998. He was also the Louisiana state chairman from 1993-1998 and obtained many coac hing accomplish ments sin ce 1987.

Ron Galimore reviewed the approval process that has to take place prior to the minutes going on USA Gymnastics' web site. All minutes must be reviewed by the MPC chair and men's program director prior to being signed by USA Gymnastics president Bob Colarossi. Sometimes there are delays due to the availability of these individuals, but the goal is always to get the minutes posted online as soon as possible.

II. PETITIONS TO SENIOR NATIONAL TEAM

Everyone spoke favorably to keep these three athletes on the team for another six months. The fact that they were ranked TE

McIntyre recommended filling three of the five positions available at Winter Cup with these petitioning athletes and adding only three athletes onto the national team from the Winter Cup Challenge. The committee members thought this was a reasonable compromise.

Motion: Change in the national team document- We will be accepting three rank order gymnasts from the 2001 Winter Cup and placing a total of 13 athletes on the senior national team.

Motion: Tomita Second: Weiner Passed unanimously Motion: To approve all three athletes; Tomita, Natalie, and Toman to be placed on the national team with funding from the 2001 Winter Cup for a period of six months.

Motion: Weiner Second: Waller Passed unanimously

III. NAL & TA Tomita requested a sub-committee to select the NAL and TA's for a two-year term. Butch Zunich suggested that this committee review the judges annually. This committee would bring back names for final approval by the MPC. Weiner suggested that this committee decide all judging issues and make selections as well.

Motion: The MPC is appointing a sub-committee of Ron Galimore (MPD), an NGJA rep, a senior coaches rep ., and our FIG representative to recommend NAL's and TA's, to oversee all assignments for domestic and international competitions, and handle all related judging issues.
