SO LONG, rFarf;wf;L~ Auf Wiedersehen, ADIEU remember with great clarity my first USA Gymnashcs board meehng in 1992. I should confess that my memories are facilitated by my"rat pock" tendencies. I keep everything; and so when contemplahng what Imight soy to you as Iturn the gavel over to the next Choir, Iwas able to pullout myremarks from that first meehng. In truth, I must confess that in rereading my remarks now eight years later I was disappointed to discover that they did not offer greater inspirahon or vision. But they did offer on unqualified commitment to give of my hme and talents to help Sandy Knapp America's premier nahonal governing body conhnue to USA Gymnastics Chair achieve success. That is a commitment and a result that I 1992-2000 have no reluctance tosoy has been achieved. There was one aspect of mycomments at that first board meehngthat Idobelieve merits revisihng. Duringthat meeting Ishored the RolphWaldo Emerson's definihonof success. It goes as foll ows: To laugh often and much To win the respect of intelligent People and the affection of children To earn the appreciation of honest Critics and endure the betrayal of false friends To appreciate beauty To find the best in others To leave the world a bit better To know even one life has breathed Easier because you have lived This is to have succeeded

That is a measure of success I subscribe to, and against which I am fully prepared to have my service to you measured. For purposes of this reflection I must amend Mr. Emerson's quote to read "youngadults" instead of children. There is at the end of the day a single measuringstick that Iapplytomy evaluation of my peri arm once as your Choir. Did I always do all I could to advance the interests of the athletes participating at anylevel of our program? Iamcertainthat I have, andit has been on honor to have the opportunity to do so. The young people whodedicate themselves to our sport are among the most remarkable people that Ihave ever hod the privilege of knowing. Ihave learned from them, andbeen both inspired and challenged by them. Through myservice to this sport, I have come to adopt a new personal gaol-to try each day to be as determined in my effort, as skilled in my execution and as generous inmy relationships as the athletes Ihave gotten to know during the post eight years. Toeach and every athlete I have met, whether on Olympian or tumbling tot, thank you. I hope I have given toyou half as muchas you have given to me. Unfortunately, this organizahon has not achieved011 1would have hopedfor when I was elected eight years ago, but at the some hme I am extraordinarily proudof the progress we have mode: • I am proud of the success we achieved in Atlanta, but I am every bit as proud of the way our athletes represented us in Sydney. And I am proud that, for the first time since at least 1984, we managed to pick our Olympic Team without suffering the distraction of a major team selection dispute. • I am proud that our safety and professional education programs have become a model for the industry. • I am proud that the services offered to our membership increase and improve on a regular basis. • I am proud that our athletes are at least a little better protected from the tyranny of abusive individuals who never should have been allowed to find their way into our gJJI11S.

By Mark Gibson Author of Going For " 7" & Going For It "2" The Gym Bag Companions For Living Our Dreams

hat was a conversation I had my 30th birthday party years ago. A good had shown up. relatives, they were there---even a guy 1'd who was a h'iend of a guest. His name was Steve, he was 22 years old, and he was a surfer. I learned from other guests that Steve had just completed what surfers refer to as an endless summer. In other words he had just spent an entire year surfing around the world. (NOTE: To those of you not familiar with surfing terminology, this does not mean Steve caught one wicked wave off the New Jersey shore and just kept riding it for 12 months. No, Steve had spent the whole year traveling around the world surfing.

After listening to Steve's tales of adventure I casually mentioned that I too USA

How cool! I had to meet this guy.

would one day like to spend a year traveling around the world. "I don't think you want to do that Mark," said Steve. I was stunned! How could he make such a statement? He knew nothing about me. But apparently he knew enough. "What do you mean. " I asked "Well," Steve continued, "this is your 30th birthday party, right? You've already blown the greatest opportunity you will probably ever have to do something like this-your twenties. If you really wanted to spend a year traveling arow1d the world, by now, you would have done it." And I thought I was stunned before! However, Steve wasn't through with me yet. He'd saved his best shot for last. "I don't think you want to do this .. .I think you just wish you could do this. There is a big difference between wishing for something and r-e-a-l-l-y wanting it Mark."

Ouch! That hurt ... I was a WISHER not a WANTER? It took a few hours for Steve's words of wisdom to penetrate my damaged ego. But before the evening was out I knew he had given me the greatest birthday gift ever. The gift of self-responsibility. He had made me realize that people who really want to make their dreams come true just go out and live the advise of those NIKE commercials. They don't just dream about it. .. they don't just plan it. .. they don't just read about it. ..they "just do it! " continued on page 46

from Krafft Academy of Gymnastics, 14year-old Lindsey Vanden Eykel and 12year-old Hollie Vise, both from World Olympic Gymnastics and alternate Lisa Colwell from Krafft Academy of Gymnastics. The USA women started the competition on beam with high scores from Vanden Eykel and Vise, scoring 9.70 and 9.60, respectively. The USA took the early lead after round one over Romania and China. After round two, the Romanian's beam scores pulled this team in the lead-75.95 to USA's 75.775. The USA had

some nice floor routines, especially Fjordholm who scored a 9.60 and Humphrey, who scored a 9.525. The USA moved to vault where Fjordholm led the USA scoring 9.625, the highest score of the competition on vault. Kelly, in her first international competition , hit two solid vaults scoring 9.512. Despite some good vaults from the USA, the Romanians maintained the lead after three rounds of competition . The USA, however, clinched the title after their final rotation on bars thanks to some excellent routines. Vise led the team on bars scoring a 9.725, the highest score of the competition on this event. "This meet was really exciting ," said Vise. "I knew it was going to be really close so I was just hoping we would win. This was my first team competition and it was fun to win with this group of girls." USA Team Coach Martha Karolyi was encouraged by the win saying , "This is very promising continued on page 22

for us-a great team effort. We always want to win-that is the ultimate goal. There is a lot of young talent here and the coaches were working together and cheering one another on ." The U.S. secured the top team score on vault with 37.837 and bars with 38.125, Romania and China tied on beam with 38.250 and Romania had the top score on floor with 38.325. Romania's Oana Petrovschi had the highest overall score of 38.350 followed by Vise (38.012) and Humphrey (37 .800). Americans Kelly and Fjordholm were fourth and fifth with 37.537 and 37.375. On the men 's side, the USA team narrowly lost to Romania scoring 224.550 to 225.075. The young team from China took third with a 223.825. The USA men's team included: Mike Dutka, 22, from Team Texaco-Houston , David Henderson , 18, from Houston Gymnastics Academy, Brett McClure, 19, from Team Texaco-USOTC, Jamie Natalie, 21, from Team Texaco-Ohio State, Todd Thornton , 18, from Houston Gymnastics Academy, and Guard Young , 23 , from University of Oklahoma. 'The energy level was great tonight-the crowd was awesome," said 2000 Olympian Natalie. "We came in and hit our routines and did more than we expected tonight. I was really happy with my performance." The USA team started off strong on rings and were just .30 tenths apart from the Romanians after round one . Romania

continued their lead in round two. Round three is where things got very interesting. The USA's Henderson started the team off on pommel horse but after three or four skills the pommel broke off and Henderson found himself on the floor with the pommel in his hand. This was a first in a USA Gymnastics National or International competition. Replacement pommels were brought in from Central New York Gymnastics and Henderson and the rest of the U.S. team finished the event after Rotation Six concluded and the other gymnasts were completely finished with the competition . "The pommel broke," said Henderson. "I was fighting and all of a sudden it was in my hand. It was so surprising ." Other highlights of the competition for the USA men included McClure's clean set on floor which scored a 9.60 and Dutka and Young 's floor sets which both scored 9.50. On pommel horse, the high scores for the U.S. were McClure's 9.575 and Dutka's 9.550. Henderson, who was competing in his fi rst international competition , was the high score for the U.S. on rings (9.450) followed by Natalie (9 .350) . Young scored a 9.45 on vault, which was the high score for the USA. McClure and Natalie had the second and third highest scores of the competition on parallel bars, 9.550 and 9.525, plus the USA had the highest team

score on this event. McClure scored a 9.675 on high bar, the highest score of the competition on this event. Natalie hit a solid routine to score a 9.60, fourth best in the competition . Young, who scored a 9.5 on pommel horse, said , "It was hard doing pommel horse after the competition was supposed to be finished. We were tired both mentally and physically." One of the USA team coaches, Mark Williams, said, 'The guys did a good job hitting four out of five pommel horse routines and getting back into the game. It was exciting in the end. The USA came very close to defeating the Romanian team, which included three members of their Olympic Team .

Just imagine grips that f it with the comfort of your oldest , most faded jeans-from the first swing. Consider baby suede padding , NEW OFT SWING blue foam insert for those who need a little ext ra softness, a distinctive wrist strap and you have a 501 BLUE . Most gymnasts want a grip that 's soft and easy to break in. They also want them to be durab le. The 50 I does this better than any other grip on the market AND they do it with style and good pricing.

\J

501 UNEVEN BAR G RIP WITH DOWEL, HOOK & LOOP sizes 0-3 Request copies of G50i-iO $33 .75 our 2000-2001 catalogues. 64 pages of grips, training accessories, apparel, posters, home equipment, gifts, books and jewelry for gymnasts, & 16 pages of cheerleading products. Check out our catalogues at:

CLASSIC is the most durable grip on the market. We know - our customers talk . Of course, it takes longer to break in CLASSIC grips because of the low stretch factor of the heavy duty leather. In fact , in recent independent laboratory tests the TEN.O classic leather was compared to the leather in other popular grips a nd was found to withsta nd 18% greater pulling stress. If you are a hard training, big trick gymnast who doesn't like her grips to stretch or doesn 't like to buy grips frequently we recommend using THE CLASSICS. Literally thousands of gymnasts do! You wi ll love the baby suede padding , the custom designed webbing for a fresh new look, and the new soft swing insert.

z-time Olympic Gold Medallist Tatiana Lysenko presents ... BODY BALANCE continued from page 8

Steve also made me realize that the reasons I had used in the past for not traveling were just a bunch of excuses. "What about my apartment?" " ... just move out!'''"' "What about all my stuff?" " ...just store it!" "What about my job?" " ... just leave it, get a better one when you get back?"

Doesn't the same apply to our gymnastics?

We say we want to qualify for state, make the regional team, learn a double tuck on floor, but do we really do all the things we need to do to make these dreams a reality? If our dreams are not backed up by measurable and consistent action, then they are just wishes. Unless your name is Aladdin don't bet on your wishes coming true without a lot of effort. This is the real world, not a fairy tale. "But what if I mess up?" So mess up. Then learn from your mistakes and do it better next time. "What if I put in all that effort and still don't learn a double back?" So what! If you don't put in the effort you definitely won't learn a double back. In other words, you have nothing to lose. "What if everyone thinks I am a big loser." So let them! What other people think of you is their business, not yours.

• •

•

•

•

•

Remember, you can make excuses or you can make progress ... but you • can't make both! So, be honest, do you train like a winner or a wisher? Not Sure? Try the questionnaire to the left.

So how did you do? If your answers were from the "B" list, congratulations! You are definitely training with a winner's attitude. If you saw a little of yourself on the " A" list you may be wishing a bit more than wanting. Don't worry too much if you picked up a few wisher points. Most of us (even the best) have a little of both wisher and winner qualities. The main purpose of this exercise was to help you understand how your attitude towards various challenges plays a huge roll in your ultimate success in gymnastics. In closing, here is something to think about. To a winner the challenges and setbacks in life are never seen as excuses to quit, they are seen as reasons to -try harder and opportunities to develop determina tion.

You don't particularly like strength conditioning (you never have.) When it's time to condition do you .•.

1

Make excuses, whine and try to talk the coach out of it? In other words-If I can get out of doing things I don 't want to do I win. ..today.

Accept conditioning as one of the prices you have to pay for achieving your dreams and do it willingly-whether you like it or not? In other words, just because I don 't like -

-

-

conditioning doesn 't mean I don 't want to do it. I have dreams I can't achieve unless I

am physically strong. So I do conditioning willingly and effectively even though it's not fun.

2

A judge gives you a score you are convinced is too low. Do you ... Throw a hissy fit, call the judge names, blow the rest of the meet and blame it all on the judge who you believe underscored you? In other words, I am not responsible for my moods, therefore, my success hinges on circumstances beyond my control.

Accept the fact that you chose to be in a "judgmental" sport, knowing that statistically you

are given a "gift" as often as you are underscored? In other words, there is a lot more to my -

-

-

gymnastics than one score. I keep my mind focused on the "big picture" not allowing small distractions to steer me from my goals.

You know you are not the most talented gymnast on your team. Do you...

3

Convince yourself you are never going to be any good? In other words, If things do not come easy, what's the point in trying.

Accept the fact that you are going to have to work a little harder than most of your teammates just to learn the same skills? In other words, I have no _ ........

control over the talent I was bam with, but what I do with that talent is 100% my responsibility.

You fall off beam/pommel horse six times in a meet. Do you ...

4

Burn your competition attire in the parking lot and swear you are done with this insane sport? In other words, challenges are a reason to quit. Admit to yourself you have a weakness you need to address and commit yourself to a plan of action to turn that weakness into a strength? In other words, challenges can _ ........

5

make the strong stronger. (They can also make the weak weaker.)

Your team won the state championships but your local paper won't print the result because you were not representing a high school sport. Do you ... Stop working so hard. After all, what's the point if no one knows or cares? In other words, I should only work hard if I am going to get recognition for my efforts.

Think to yourself, well, a picture in the paper sure would be a nice bonus, but recognition _ ...... from others is not the main reason I do gymnastics? In other words, I am driven more by my need to achieve my dreams than my need to impress other p eople.

6

Someone asks you what your gymnastics dream is. Do you ... Tell them "I wish I could make it to the Olympics someday?" In other words, I have a dream but haven't made the connection between the dreams of tom orrow and the price I have to pay today. Tell them, "My dream is to compete in the 2004 Olympics-would you like to see my training plan? I've broken it down into yearly and monthly sub-goals. I have separate sections to record my nutritional needs. I have monitored my strength development in relation to my body growth and there is a section to monitor my flexibility. This is the network of support people I have created to support me during challenging times, and this is ..." (You get the point.)? In other words, wishes only come true in fairy tales. In the real world I have to work to make my dreams come true.

INSIDE USA GYMNASTICS continued from page 6

• I am proud of helping launch an effort that ensures our glJl/masts' experience is a healthy one. • I am proud that no other sport in the Olympic movement does a better job offo stering meaningful involvement of their athletes in the governance process than USAGymnastics. • I am proud to have contributed to the efforts to maintain men 's glJmnastics as an NCAA championship sport. I recognize that the challenges that lie ahead in that area are significant, but that is a battle we are better able to fight from the position we are now in ra ther than if we were on the outside looking in. • I am proud that our business practices, although not pelfect, are a quantum leap ahead of where they were when I joined this organization. Th e information distributed to the Board, especially the finan cial reports, is more timely and inforrnative. Meeting presentations are no longer a mere rehashing of written reports. And we have in place a formal process for reviewing and evaluating our president. • I am proud that we now have meaningful policies on confidentiality, conflicts of interest and member misconduct. • I am proud to have required that we implement a new Board member orientation program. • I al11 proud to have steered this ship successf ully through two changes in staff leadership. In both cases we managed to keep the office f unctioning effectively while also taking the time to conduct a deliberate and open search for our next President. • I am proud to have helped preserve the legaClJ of this sport by incorporating the Hall of Fame into USA Gymnastics and setting the stage for appropriate recognition of the inductees each year as part of our Congress. • I am proud to have played a lead role on several occasions to gain or

restore USOC funding for programs of critical importance to our athletes. • I am proud to have had an impact, in ways large and small, in the lives of some of the athletes, staff and volunteers who have become friends over the last eight years. Service to an organization has its rewards, but they pale in comparison to rewards I have received in the form of a heartfelt thank you from a parent after having helped their child through a difficu lt time, the appreciative note fro m a Board member after we have made it th rough a challenging moment, or the hug from a grateful athlete at the end of a successful competition. • And finally, I am proud to have been a part of the group that championed the addition of two Public Sector positions to the LISA Gymnastics Board. Once approved, I helped iden tifiJ and recruit candidates who were subsequently elected and who have the potential to literally transform the governance and culture of our Board. My sincere appreciation is extended to Bill Hybl and Bob Wood for their willingness to serve and my very bes t wishes go out to Ron Froehlich as he succeeds me as Chairman of the Board. Good luck to them and all the newly-elected leaders on both the Executive Committee and the Board. It has been eight years filled with highs and lows; exhilarating triumphs and difficult defeats, but throughout it all there has been one constant. It has been on honor to be of service to USA Gymnostics!

Hasta la vista Sandy Knapp

Introducing the Newest Grip on the Bars! Designed and manufactured with assistance from National Team Coaches, the Just Right by Gibson is the newest idea in Ladies Uneven Bar Grips. The Just Right is cut slightly narrower for great contact with the bar and reduces side to side rolling of the grip for athletes with smaller hands The single buckle design assures a firm, tight fit at the wrist, and eliminates the constant adjustment necessary with velcro strap grips.
