DIET AND STRESS FRACTURES By Michelle Dusserre Farrell,

M.B.s., R.D.

T

he stress fracture is an injury that can be a threat to young athletes at the prime of their careers. A stress fracture occurs when the stress on a bone results in bone fatigue, resulting in a partial or sometimes complete break of the bone. This injury usually occurs when an athlete is at the height of his/her competitive season or when training becomes more intense, and the stress caused by training and other factors becomes too much on bones. For one to maintain healthy bones, a sound diet that meets the Recommended Dietary Allowances for calcium is very important. However, recent studies show that overall dietary balance may playa much larger role in maintaining bone health.

Lately, much attention has been placed on young female athletes and on the Female Athlete Triad, a group of disorders recognized by the American College of Sports Medicine shown to affect this population of athletes. These disorders include amenorrhea (lack of menstruation), osteoporosis (loss of bone mineral density) and disordered eating patterns. Studies done recently on the effect of stress fractures in young women have focused on (but are not limited to) these elements of the triad. One of the most heavily studied areas has been the link between amenorrhea and the incidence of stress fractures. The connection between amenorrhea and a decrease in bone density comes partly from low levels of the hormones, estrogen and progesterone. Both of these hormones are needed in normal levels to help calcium deposit into bone and to maintain bone density. A majority of athletes studied who reported a history of stress fractures had some history of amenorrhea" 11 . 13 and oligomenorrhea (infrequent menstruation)" 5. Another component of the triad, disordered eating, may also playa role in amenorrhea, which has been linked to the incidence of stress fractures. Dietary intake and disordered eating patterns have been linked to amenorrhea in a number of studEUSA

ies. A concept that has been developed supporting the link between dietary intake and amenorrhea is called "energy drain"". The human body must choose which functions it will tend to first. Things such as growth and development all come before reproduction and menstruation on the list of priorities. If calorie intake is too low, hormones such as estrogen and progesterone are lower on the list of priorities and may not be produced in amounts high enough to allow for menstruation to occur. One factor that may override a diet low in calories and nutrients and its effects on bone mineral density is the high-impact nature of the sport. Gymnastics is an example of this. Some studies have shown that gymnasts have higher bone mineral densities than non-gymnasts and other athletes, despite lower calorie intakes and histories of amenorrhea" . Despite this, however, gymnasts still do suffer from stress fractures•. 13. J'. A diet that is low in overall nutrients can have serious consequences for the young athlete. Ninetynine percent of total body calcium is stored in bone. A diet that is low in calcium can put the athlete at risk for developing bone-related injuries. Even if a young female athlete is menstruating and eats enough calories, calcium requirements are still just as important for maintaining overall bone health . The Recommended Dietary Allowances for calcium are currently 1,300 mg/ day for males and females age 9-18, and 1000 mg/day for males and females age 19-30. For females who are estrogen-deficien t

Too much salt, protein, phosphorous, caffeine and alcohol have a negative effect on the amount of calcium that the body is able to absorb. One notable source of phosphorous is soft drinks. Phosphorous and calcium compete with one another for absorption in the body. Not only is this a problem, but soft drinks in most cases replace milk as a beverage throughout the day, which can even further create an overall f) calcium deficiency.

and not menstruating, it has been recommended that they in crease their calcium intake to total 1,SOOmg/ day". A list of foods and their calcium contents can be found in Table 1. It is important to approach keeping a healthy bone mineral d enSity through prevention in all young athletes. An eating plan that is sufficient in calories as well as calciun1 is the best dietary measm e to take for preventing a decrease in bone mass. A d iet rich in calcitu11 is extremely important for increasing bone mass. Stress fractmes can easily shorten the life span of an athlete's career. Man y different factors go into causing stress fractmes. Diet can play an important role in helping to lower the potential for stress fractmes. With a balanced diet that contains plenty of calories and calcium, athletes can help decrease their risk for stress fractmes and increase their promise for athletic success.

BANANA-NUT MUFFINS Submitted to the Athlete's Cookbook by Olympic Gold Medalist Dominique Dawes. Dawes said, "Because this recipe is low in cholesterol and fat, it's great anytime (breakfast, lunch, snack)." 2 cups Bisquick pancake mix 2 egg whites 1 cup skim milk 2 bananas, overripe 2 cups chopped walnuts 2 tsp. sugar Preheat oven to 375-425 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, add Bisquick. Add egg whites, milk and sugar. Stir until lumps are gone. Add softened bananas and walnuts until they are mixed thoroughly. Pour mixture into muffin tins, and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. If you don' t like ban an as and walnuts, 2 cups of blueberries can be substituted . Yields: 12 muffins Tips: The m uffin itself is low in fat, but adcting the walnuts increases the fa t content quite a bit. To decrease the fa t, don' t use walnu ts, or substitute blueberries. The Talent Opportunity Program, TOP's for short, is in its sixth year of existence and going strong. More and more talented gymnasts are passing through the TOP's program in route to elite status. As the years go by we expect even more TOP's gymnasts to be at the top of the National Team. The goal of the Talent Opportunity Program is to identify talented young female gymnasts between the ages of 7-12 that are not currently seeking or training for elite or international level competition. The program seeks to identify deficiencies in fitness and skill factors that can be determined by scientific testing and interaction with regional and national staff coaches. These deficiencies are communicated to bOtll the athlete and coach for remedial work. TOP's enhances the information flow and educational opportunities to talented athletes, parents and coaches to help improve the athletes' training. Athletes benefit from TOP's by seeing clearly how their physical abilities and skills compare to other athletes of the same age from across the U.S. The athletes get access to some of the leading authorities in gymnastics via tlle regional and national clinics. The athletes' problem areas are identified and noted for more in-depth analysis and remediation. The athletes begin a tracking that will allow them to see how they have progressed from year to year. Also the athlete's personal coach has an opportunity to see how his/her coaching efforts compare to the rest of the nation. The feedback from the TOP's testing can be invaluable in determining where the coach's methods stand relative to the rest of the nation. This year more tllan 1,700 gynmasts participated in TOP's. Below is a list of the 1997 National TOP's Team Members. The 7-8 year olds were selected based upon Regional TOP Testing results using a standard battery of physical abilities tests. The coaches of these athletes were invited to attend the National TOP Training Camp tllat was held in Tulsa, Okla., tlle first weekend of December. The 912 year old athletes were selected from one of tlle two National TOP Testings tllat were held the first two weekends of October in Rochester, N.Y., and Reno, Nev. Four hlmdred atllletes were involved at the National Test performing physical abilities tests and basic gynulastics skills. The 9-12 National TOP Team Members also participated in the National TOP Training Camp along with tlleir coaches. USA

TURE STARS

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS ~~'':;;?on;:.~:ew;:'~elJ':t:o~:~ AN D COACHES WORKSHOP T

By Dennis Mcintyre

United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs November 13-16. This was the second year for the Fuhrre Stars National Championships, which was held in conjw1Ction with the Men's Coaches Workshop. This year's competition included the 10-11 age group division as well as a new 12-year- old age group division and feahrred increased participation from last year. For 1997, 101 athletes qualified to compete at the Fuhrre Stars Championships. Not only were the numbers up from last year, but so was the level of routines and skill accomplishment. The coaches and athletes have really been working on the Fuhrre Stars skills and routines since last year and it shows. As with last year, the Future Stars Championships also included a "workshop" for coaches, athletes and parents. Athletes spent half a day in the gym working on basic skills and refinement with members of the Jmtior National Coaching Staff and the other half addressing subjects such as leg strength and power development, good nutrition, good poshrre and good gymnastics presentation development. Parents were given a USA Gymnastics Men's Program overview and treated to lechrres on sports psychology, nutrition and improving athlete poshrre. The parents were also given the chance to watch their sons work out and listen to the National Coaching Staff members "up close." The coaches were scheduled for a two day workshop. Their sessions included workout planning, sports psychology, poshrre, strength and power development and selected teclmical skills on each event. The coaches also had time to spend with their athletes in the gym working with the Junior National Coaching Staff. In all, more than 100 coaches participated in the two-day workshop. Many workshop participants did not have athletes in the Future Stars Championships, they were just present to learn and experience a great competition. The Future Stars Championships established itself as a great event in its first year. The second year really expanded that tradition. This was an event which saw athletes, coaches and parents coming together in a tremendous learning and motivational environment. The Future Stars Program and Coaches Workshop is about the fuhrre and preparing for that fuhrre. Based on the enthusiasm and talent which was displayed at this year's event, the future for men's gymnastics is bright indeed.

COACHES: Please submit your coaching ideas to: Reebok Coaching Corner, c/o USA Gymnast;,s, Pan American Plaza, 201 S. Capitol Ave., Suite 300, Indianapolis, IN 46225.

Deviations from good posture and alignment often occur for many reasons, including lack of strength, flexibility, or many times a lack of body awareness. Let's start from the feet and work up and point out different crucial points that lead to proper alignment and good posture.

-

1. THE FEET In the new JO Compulsory program, the JO Committee has placed a great deal of emphasis on a tight releve (stand high on the toes) position. In on attempt to get a complete understanding of this, we described specifically in the text (too many limes to count} ..."Releve with the heel of the front foot pressed against the front of the bock fool." In this position, coaches and judges should look for 0 stroight line from the boll of the foot up through the onkle. The heel should be lihed os high as possible, not holfway. There is 0 generol deduction of up to 0.10 eoch time the gymnost does not show this position (high on toe ond feet touching) when required .

I

1

i

2. THE KNEES Unless stoted in "plie" (bend in the knees), the knees should be stroight in a standing position. Agymnost's flexibility in the hamstrings (bock of the legs) will have 0 greot deolto do with whether or not her legs are completely extended. Tight homstrings will ohen lead to bent legs, which leods to deductions.

3. THE HIPS, ABDOMINALS, AND THE PELVIS This is the oren of the body where most of the problems occur. Aher coo ching ond judging for mony yeors, I'mconvinced thot mony times the gymnasts are not awore that they ore stonding with their "butts ond guts oul." This needs to be constantly corrected on a doily basis. You will heor many coaches soy "hips flat, pelvis tilted under, etc." In many instonces, the hip flexor musde in the front of the leg is so tightthot it couses the pelvis to tilt ond consequently pushes the hips bock. Aconsistent flexibility progrom of stretching this musde will help with the problem. The pelvis should be straight with the obdominals pulled in to straighten this line.

4. THE RIB CAGE I really do not understond why pushing the rib cage out {forword!, ond sticking the buttocks out hos become such a populor thing to do. Mony top internotionol performers do this every time they present to the judges os well os during their routines. This is NOT correct posture. If they hove studied any donce at all, I'm positive that this could not have been tought by 0 donce teacher. Needless to soy, this "fancy little floir" hos trickled down to our young othletes ond hos created nightmore posture problems. In 0 straight body position, the ribs should be pressed together ond down (not sticking out with on orched bock) so as to creote 0 flat stroightline.

5. THE SHOULDERS New deductions hove been odded to help judges see whotthe shoulders should be doing when showing good posture. The shoulders should be pressed down ond wide. They should not be pulled bock causing the shoulder blodes to pinch together. Nor should they be rounded forword like a "hollow" position on the bors. They need to be wide, open, and pressed down. When the shoulders are pressed down, the neck will oppear longer ond the gymnost will hove a toller, lighter, more elegont oppeorance.

6. THE HEAD Too ohen a gymnast performs 0 nice leap with good height and extension but she is storing down at the floor. The chin should be lihed with the neck long. Generally, the focus should be slightly above eye level. There are mony limes in the new compulsory exercises where there is no mention of focus at all. In these cases, the gymnast is allowed to look wherever she wonts. However, good olignment during this optional focus is still required. and ar.gnment is essential throughout the entire exercise, from the pose to the finish. The listed on page 157 of the new compulsory book,. and it states, "Incorrect alignment, position, or boslture-lID to 0.20 each." The WTe clarified deductions regarding this issue. Incorrect alignment, position, or major elements is up to 0.20. Incorrect body alignment, position, or posture connections is a deduction for the whole exercise of up to 0.30. As a judge, during the conI1ect:io~stn,q if a gymnast has bad posture during connections. At the end of the decide how great in total were the errors and apply the appropriate ded'u~MHI.-

BODY LEVERS With your neck on the ground in a candlestick position, hold onto a pole and lower down, again without breaking your straight body (hollow) position . Hold your teet above the ground for about 7 seconds and then go back up again. I do 3 sets of 5. You can really feel this exercise in your stomach area.

REVERSE LEG RAISES ~~~ Lie on your stomach and raise one leg at a time and lower it. Make sure you go slow on the way down and fast on the way up. Don't forget to work both legs. I use 10 lb. weights and do 3 sets of 20. This is great for your legs, especially if you use a lot of weight on your ankles.

BAR LEVERS Bring your chin above the bar. Lift in a hollow body position to vertical position. Return to the upright position with chin above bar and repeat. I do 3 sets of 6 . You can feel your arms burn after this exercise.

~-]-~-

BICYCLE KICKS Lie on your back with hands behind head. Kick your legs in and out touching your right elbow to your left knee and your left elbow to your right knee. This exercise works your stomach and is kind of fun .

RHYTHMIC USA JUNIOR US. GERMANY COMPETITION AND JOINT OLYMPIC TRAINING GROUP By Dennis Mcintyre CHAM PION SHIPS USA hosted the German Men's Junior

The 4th USA Gymnastics Rhythmic Junior Olympic Group Championships was held October 11·12 in A~anto, Georgia. The Local organiZIng host was Chaff~a Gymnashcs. The entries were divided into age levels and beginning, intenmediate and advanced, and advanced/elite categories. Groups competing in the beginning and intenmediate cate· gories used the new compulsory group routines; the advanced/elite groups perfonmed optional routines. Each group was required to compete a group rhythmic Roor exercise routine because the RFX is considered fundamental for the spart and the athletes learn how to work in unison without the added difficulty and confusion of the apparatus. in addition to the RFX routines, each group was given the option of selecting to compete in the group hoop event, the group ribbon event, or both. The format of the competition allowed each group to compete each event three times. The event winner was deter· mined by adding the three scores together. Katie Scoff, 11 , from Chaffooga Gymnastics said, "ilike group because it gives us something different to do than just working by ourselves. it also teaches us to work beffer together as a team and it's lots 01 fun ." inger Loxe, 11 , also from Chaffooga Gymnastics, soid, "It doesn't make me as nervous as when i'm competing individuals because i have peaple to look at if i forget the routine. it teaches us to cooperate and we get to see a lot of cool things" Cooch Cindy Stone from Choffooga Gymnastics said, '1he JO Group program has done a lot to unite our team. The girls have learned to work together to try to perfect, not only their own skills, but those of their teammates." Cooch Marina Davidovich from A~anta international Rhythmic Gymnastics Center said, "i was so inspired by the JO Group Championships that i will begin working with the elite group program also.
