By Dan Benardot, -PhD, RD, LD Georgia State University USA Gymnastics National Team Nutritionist

ot long ago, several coaches asked if having caffeine (by drinking a cup or more of coffee) before h-aining or competition would improve performance. While this question is often asked for athletes involved in endurance events, it was the first time I had heard it posed for anaerobes. Since then, the question has been posed with increasing frequency and seriousness. So here's some information on caffeine and its ergogenic (performance enhancing) properties.

N

e

Caffeine is one of several methyl-xantlunes found in coffee, chocolate, cola, nodoze, empirin, anacin, and tea. Urinary caffeine levels of 12 mcg/ ml is con sidered doping, and is baIU1ed by the laC aIld USOc. Given the frequency wi th w luch caffeine is found in the food supply, some people may reach that 12 mcg/ ml level easily. Frequent coffee drinkers, for instance, may reach that level with eight cups of coffee. It's difficult to tell how tea might contribute to urinary caffeine levels, since different teas h ave different

Caffeine is addictive, and is a diuretic. The addictive nature of caffeine is noticed most when a frequent consume! .. ' .. . . of caffeine stops consuming caffeine-containing foods. This generally results in 24 to 48 hours of "withdrawal" symptoms that include headaches, sweating, increased heart rate, and restlessness.

WHERE WE GET CAFFEINE

..

revels ot. caffein e. You shpuIa : 'be advised, howe~er, that some teas m ay contribute more to caffeine levels than coffee. Many sodas also have caffeine. Two sodas contribute between 1.5 to 3 mcg/ m1 caffeine to urine. Chocolate is also a caffeine conh'ibutor (one chocolate bar provides about the sanle amount as tvvo sodas) .

HOW CAFFEINE MAY IMPACT PERFORMANCE

Most of the studies on caffeine have been performed on enduraI1Ce athletes, and some of these studies indicate that ingesting caffeine before exercise may improve enduraI1Ce. The improvements seen in endurance are not full y understood. Part of the difficulty in understaIlding caffeine's effects is that there is a reduced dose response aIld adaptation to caffeine ingestion. Therefore, subjects accustomed to con suming foods that contain caffeine may experience no effect

on performaI1Ce with an added caffeine dose, wlule those who are unaccustom ed to consunung caffeine may experience aIL endUraI1Ce benefit. In tlus latter group, recent studies on endurance athletes indicate that caffeine consumed at levels 'below the laC limit do impart an ~rgogeluc benefit. It appears that the rea. son for tlus benefit is that there is an increase in intramuscular triglyceride (fat) usage during the firs t 30 nl.inutes of exercise. Tlus spares glycogen (stored caI'bohydrate), w luch is typically the limiting factor in enduraI1Ce activities. When glycogen runs out, so does the athlete. The findings on aerobic (enduraIlce) athletes do not traILSlate, however, to w hat we CaIl expect to see in anaerobic (power) athletes. In fact, studies of sprinters generally indicate that caffeine ingestion does not impact on performance.

PROBLEMS WITH CAFFEINE INGESTION Caffeine is addictive, aIld is a diuretic. The addictive nature of caffeine is noticed most w hen a frequent COlLSumer of caffeine stops cOlLSuming caffeine-containing foo ds. Tlu s generally results in 24 to 48 hours of "withdrawal" symptoms that include headaches, sweating, increased heaI"t rate, and restlessn ess. Diuretics, including caffeine, increase the rate of water loss via the urine, aIld increase the opportunity for dehydration. Given the importaI1Ce of optimally hydrated muscles for athletic perfonnaI1Ce (well hydrated muscle is 75 % water), and the traditional underhydration of gymn asts, it makes little sense to consciously add a substance to the diet that increases the chaI1Ce for dehydration.

SUMMARY There is no evidence that increasing the consumption of caffeine w ill, in aIly way, improve gYllU1aStiCS performaI1Ce .. The diuretic effect of caffeine may, in fact, reduce performance. Nevertheless, occasiOllal con sumption of caffeinated foo ds is not likely to have aIL impact on performance, either negative or positive. The best rule to follow in tlus case is moderation. Don't go looking for it, but you don't have to avoid it if you run into it.

WHERE TO BEGIN? STEP 1: STEP 2: STEP 3:

Do a cartwheel and finish facing sideways with hips open (head should stay natural, arms by the ears). Do the some as step 1 but just before the second foot hits the mot turn with square hips and shoulders and land with feet together. Do a step hurdle into the roundoff working on keeping the hips open, head in, and arms by the ears.

PURPOSE: These steps are to ovoid piking down in the round· off. Many times gymnasts get their feet together and lurn 100 quickly

Chow began the competition for the U.S. competing second on vault. Unfortunately she landed low to the ground on her first attempt (Yurchenko layout double twist) and put her hands down on the second. She scored a 9.125 placing 15th. Chow's coach Mark Young said, "I know everyone was in the same situation but 1 think that not having a one-Iouch hurt her performance." Dawes commented on her routine saying, "I was happier with my performance today on bars, but 1still missed one of my skills and 1want to show how it should be done."

Phelps hit her bar routine, scoring a 9.737. She finished eighth in a three-way tie with Kathleen Stark of Germany and Xuan Liu from China. On floor, Powell stepped out of bounds on her first tumbling pass, double layout. She placed 11th with a 9.537. laMorte secured aspot for finals placing sixth on rings. "To come here and make finals in his first World Championships is something," soid Ron Brant, the men's coach for the 1996 World Championships. McCain put his hands down on his lost tumbing pass on floor, a full twisting double bock, resulting in a score of 9.200 and 15th place. He performed a clean set on parallel bars placing 11th with a score of 9.525. He missed making finals by .037. Amajor form break on Roth's high bar release move may have been the underlying factor that led to his 9.4B7 and 10th place finish. Umphrey competed four release moves which helped him advance to finals. (Ionlinued on page 29)

FINAL ROUND The highlight of the 1996 World Championships was Dawes' bronze medal-winning performance on beam. She upgraded her routine by adding a double turn and scored a 9.800 to tie China's Xuan liu for the bronze. Dawes is now a four-time World Championships Medalist. "I was satisfied with my routine except for the bobble on my turn and my landing," said Dawes. "I came here with the goal of medaling in all three of my events but that dream was over after my floor routine.

Medaling in one is beller than none," said Dawes. la Morte competed a dean set on rings but did not stick his landing, scoring a 9.687 for seventh place. "I felt good about my set and I was only one-tenth from second place," said laMorte. Phelps took an extra step on her bar dismount, undoubtedly costing her the .063 she needed to finish with the bronze medal. Phelps placed eighth with a 9.712. Dawes made uncharacteristic mistakes on bars, finishing in 11 th place with a score of 8.787. Kelli Hill,

Dawes' coach said, "It musl have been a fluke. She has been training this routine very hard and hit it during warm-ups." Phelps fell off beam on a punch front, placing seventh with a score of 9.187. "I'mnot really happywilh my rouline bul al least I con learn from il. I need to stay focused for the enlire routine," said Phelps. Um phrey competed his usual four releases on high bar and took one step on his full-in double layout dismount scoring a 9.71 2 for fift h. Umphrey missed Ihe bronze medal by .050.

Dear Jessica, /t's natural to get frustrated from time to time especially if you are really dedicated to your sport. There are a lot of exciting sports and gymnastics is a great foundation for almost all of them. Before you decide to move on to something else, work on being more patient with yourself, listening carefully to your coach and finding fun in gymnastics because you'll need to do all these regardless of what sport you choose.
