A

t the November 1996 USA Gymnastics Board of Directors meeting, after a thorough and detailed discussion, the Board approved an Agreement between Jefferson Pilot Sports (JPS) and USA Gymnastics for the marketing of USA Gymnastics' existing events and for the creation and marketing of new gymnastics exhibitions. This Agreement, which will commence January 1, 1997, will extend through the next quadrennium helping to stabilize USA Gymnastics' revenues and open new, creative exhibitions that will enable athletes to extend their public careers to the delight and enjoyment of the general public.

JPS is a division of Jefferson Pilot Communications, one of the three primary divisions of the $6 billion Jefferson Pilot Company.

JPS have been leaders in the development of exhibition figure skating events, airing 20-30 hours of figure skating on television during 1994 and 1995. They have been associated with USA Gymnastics on the post-Olympic Tour in 1992 and will work on the 1996 3D-city post-Olympic Tour.

USA Gymnastics and the gymnastics community have been interested in seeing gymnastics learn from the success that figure skating, particularly exhibition style figure skating, has enjoyed.

We have a wonderful exhibition event in the Reese's International Cup, which was one of our top-rated television programs in 1995.

At the same time, it is imperative that the competitive events we host, such as the Coca-Cola National Championships and the McDonald's American Cup, remain vital, well-attended events with a large television audience.

By partnering with JPS, we believe that we have entered into a relationship that will allow us to improve the marketing of our events, while retaining control over their presentation, and at the same time develop, in a more cohesive and focused way, exhibition style gymnastics. JPS is on the leading edge of this effort and we believe we have a lot to gain from their experience with figure skating.

The Agreement provides a joint marketing approach between JPS and USA Gymnastics in which USA Gymnastics will be primarily responsible for marketing its events and solely responsible for operating these events. JPS will be primarily responsible for marketing its gymnastics events and solely responsible for operating its events. To protect the athletes, JPS' exhibition formats and schedules are subject to the approval of USA Gymnastics.

JPS will provide USA Gymnastics a guarantee that our income from broadcast and sponsorship sales for our existing events will be at least equal to that we have enjoyed in 1994 and 1995.

Additionally, we will receive a share of the broadcast and sponsorship sales from JPS operated exhibitions.

This Agreement will result in the addition of substantial television coverage for gymnastics. As all of you know, the more we are on television, in a positive way, and the more exposure the sport has to a national television audience, the better off our clubs and industry are. This Agreement has the ability to make viewing gymnastics a much more common experience in the non-Olympic years and to contribute positively to the future of all of us.

Of the 350 6-8 year olds, 71 were selected to the National 6- 8 TOP Team. This represents fifty clubs. One coach from each club was invited to attend the December National Training Camp in Tulsa, Okla.

Of the 875 9-11 year olds, 320 were invited to take ~art in the National TOP Testing that was held at the Gymnastics Training Center in Rochester, New York, October 19-22. At Hi ational Testing, the athletes again were tested Qn physical abilities alo with some basic skills on each apparatus including-dance. What are people's feelings about the right time, if any, to introduce dowel grips?

Personally, I like kids to go as long as they can.w ithout them, because it's just one more thing to deal with if they don't really need them. However, if kids have just learned or are about to learn giants sans grips, wo uld I be making a mistake not to introduce them now? None of my gYllU1asts are having trouble w ith the skill, and none of them wear grips now . So w hat do you think? Is sooner better than later, or is not at all better, or.. ..

I believe it is importaI~t to introduce dowel grip usage as soon as the gYllmasts are working a lot of long swing and circling skills. There is a dual reason for this. First, they need a long time to become comfortable w ith the grips. Second, once they star t swin ging around the bar a lot, rips and beat-up hands interferes w ith their ability to get in sufficient repe titions. I require the January 1996

I agree w ith the" tiny hands" issue-this is why I don't require them until L6. Usually the kids' hands are big enough to fit the XS size by the time they get to this level. If the gymn asts' hands are too sm all to fit this size of grip they can' t use them anyway! An interesting tid-bit to note is that for the "super pip-squeaks," the surface area of the hand to body weight is much larger, so that the pressure exerted on the palm is much less for the little ones. As a result, these gyllU1asts can swing more giants w ithout grips without ripping thaI1 a larger gYllU1ast. Therefore, the need for grips at this stage is greatly reduced.

Sherry, I can't reply for all coaches, but at MarVaTeens, when the gYllm asts WaI1t to use dowel grips, we let them wear them.

Our only rule is that no Level S gYllU1a5ts are permitted to wear them. (LevelS's are allowed to wear regular grips if they WaI1t).

Most all of our Level 6'5 wear d owels, but here we believe it's okay since they are preparing to work on giaI1ts.

I know of a couple of gyms that encourage their gymnas ts not to wear grips until Level 8 or 9. Why? To build grip strength .

It does take some getting used to before the novices get used to this style of grip ... so the an swer is " It depends ... " This is w hy you are the coach ..

What is this kid probably capable of doing a year from now .. . as far as h ands go ... the slick bar for kids learning giants .. . and even kips can make their hands last for ever ... but not their wrists.

Sherry, One other note about dowel grips. Everyone always notices that the Russian women never wear grips, even at the Elite level! We had a group of kids and coaches go to the Ukraine a couple of years ago and this question came up. Wh en the Russians were asked, "Why don' t you wear grips?" -the answer was, "We can not afford them."

In talking to some of the foreign coaches and having traveled there, one of the main reasons they don't wear grips is that they can' t get them! These coaches would love to have them, but they aren' t easily available in Russia, etc. - and the cost can be p rohibitively expensive! In the U.s. you can order dowels by phone and receive the grips by next d ay air at a reasonable price.

Grips h ave many advantages in that they essentially lengthen the h ands of gymnasts with very short fingers, grips protect the hands and allow more repetitions, insure a consistent surface that holds chalk better than just skin, and help keep the equipment and grip makers in business!

Think about how many male gymnasts you see doing rings or high bar without grips? Women always seem to be 8-12 years behind the men, but we always catch up ... as the bar keeps getting smaller, the swings larger, and the releases higher, even the few w ithout grips w ill get and utilize them if they can! - Dave (SPORTTECH)

Introduction

B

alances are a part of the fundamental body movements in rhythmic gymnastics. They are one of the components used by judges during competitions in evaluating the level of difficulty of the routine. It is compulsory to include balances in all routines (FIG Code of Points, 1993).

The following requirements fo r balances are as d escribed in the FIG Code of Points, 1993. performed on toes . . held for a minimum of two seconds shape fi xed and well defined

the sam e level of involvem ent in the RSG program located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Two vestibular tests were included into the research: 1. Test I-Simpler balance in coordination: Vertical body position, the free leg near axis and arms stretched to the sides as recommended by Firileva, (1981); 2. Test 2- A more difficult balance: Vertical body positions, the free leg far from the axis, Recommended in Control Norms (1986) and Educational Programme for RSG (1991) .

Instructions on the two balances are as below: Test 1: Starting position-Stand on the right/ left toes with the other leg forward and flexed at the knee. The pointed toes of the free leg contact with the knee of the supporting leg and the arms stretched to the sides. The tester measures the time of main taining the stability of the balance Test 2: Starting position- Vertical balance with the free leg in a horizontal position at the back (arabesque position) and arm stretched to the sides. The gymnast rises on her toes and tries to maintain this position as long as possible. Once the gymnast has fi xed her balance on her toes, the tester starts the stopwatch.

When the gymnast is no longer able to m aintain her stability, the stopwatch is switched off.

Procedure The gymnasts were tested w ith Test 1 after 1.5 months of RSG training in a special testing session. After 15.5 months of training as according to the Malaysian Classification Programme (grade 4 and 5, 6 times per week, three hours per session), they were retested during a special session.

good amplitude in the shape The fi xation of balances d epends on vestibular stability. The vestibular stability in their order depends on the following factors (Matveev), internal and external forces, sensor corrections and coordination of movements. Vestibular stability is improved during childhood on the basis of the perfection of reflector m echanisms when the vestibular analyzer becomes more effective. The sensitive period for the development of this ability is from the age of 7 to 12 years, (Aslunarin, 1990). Lian (1989) reported that for girls there is the following process of d evelopment of vestibular stability: 25 % fro m adult possibility, 9.8 years; 50%, 11.2 years; 75%, 12.1 years; 100 % 14.5 years. But this does not mean that it is possible to develop vestibular stability at high level for all persons. Menshikov and Anishenko (1990) wrote that some people improve their ves ti bular s ta bili ty very fas t, bu t some can' t im prove much d es pi te long term preparation.

During the training process in rhythmic gymnastics, the gymnas ts improve their vestibular stability (V .Biriuk, 1972). This effect increases if the coach uses special methods for the d evelopm ent of this a bili ty.

The purpose of the present study was to conduct an analysis of the vestibular stability of gymnasts w ho just started rhythmic gynmastics and monitor their progress in their balanCing abilities while acquiring the skills of more difficult balances.

Results and Discussion The descriptive data of the subjects as reported in Table 1 are the mean (M) and standard deviation (SD) of maintaining in balances by the gymnasts. The SD are very high for all types of balances. The coefficients of variance (V) are very high for all balances.

Conclusions Based on this study, the following general conclusions appear to be justified: A. Abilities for balances are not equal for all RSG gymnasts.

This means that the balancing abilities are not equal for gymnasts in the group from the beginning. This result supports the findings of N .K. Menshikov and A.A. Anishenko. (1990), that the vestibular stability varies amongst the gymnasts practicing under the same coach. Therefore, the variety of results here is usual and common.

The results of the statistical analysis using F-ratio show that the differences between variances are statistically significant for the following events: A. Maintaining balance on the right toes and left toes for the 1st test (F-ratio 4.219 > 2.20; B. Maintaining balance on the right toes for the 1st and 2nd test (F-ratio 4.5 > 2.29) That means that maintaining balance on the right toes is significantly longer than on the left toes; and maintaining balance on the right toes for the 1st test is significantly longer than for the 2nd test.

These results support the following ideas: A. Each person has a dominant leg for maintaining balance (Holmskaya and Ephimova, 1991). Most of the subjects (11 gymnasts or 61 %) have the right leg as dominate whereas 7 gymnasts (39 %) have the left leg as dominant.

B. Balances which are more difficult in technique affect the time of holding the balance. That is why a simpler balance could be maintained longer than a difficult one (the arabesque position is more difficult than when the leg is bent forward) .

C. Where maintaining a difficult balance on the right and left

toes is concerned, the technique assists in the process of the transfer of the ability in vestibular stability from the dominant leg to the non-dominant one.

The correlation analYSis shows that the coefficient of correlation is statistically significant for the right leg during Test 1 and Test 2 Corr ; 0.626 at 0.05 level. For the left leg the coefficient of correlation is not statistically significant. This may be explained as follows. It is easier for the dominant leg to acquire the skill of maintaining a more difficult balance longer than a non-dominant one.

We divided the gymnasts into two big groups according to their performance in maintaining balance on the right toes during the 1st test.

A. Group of gymnasts with the best results: N = 8, M ; 57.0, SD ; 23.52, and V ; 41 % B. Group of gymnasts with worse results: N ; 1.91, and V; 41%

B. The "best" gymnasts increase the time of maintaining the more difficult balance than the simpler one and the difference between variances is statistically significant (F-ratio 6.71 > 3.79).

B. It is possible to define the dominant and non-dominant leg for the gymnasts.

C. Most of the gymnasts use the right leg as the dominant one.

D. For more difficult balances, the technique involved influences in a higher degree than for simpler balances.

E. It is easier for the dominant leg to acquire the ability of maintaining the position of a difficult balance than the nondominant one.

F. Gymnasts who have a high degree of vestibular stability are consistent in displaying good time of stability when performing a more difficult balance.

G. The gymnasts who have a low degree of vestibular stability

after 15.5 months improve this ability but couldn't match the level of the best gymnasts.

Objective of the Forum The objective of the forum was to present the FIG's concept for an FlG-certificate training course for general gymnastics instructors . Four U.s. instructors attended this Forum (Dean Capelotte, Lori Loznovsky, Barbara Murray Taylor, and Steve Whitlock).

The instruction manual for the training of FIG-certificate general gymnastics instructors, which was presented at this FIG Forum, may be ordered from the FIG Secretary General in French, English, or German at a price of 25 Swiss Franks.

erlin is another demonstration of the fact that general gymnastics offers a varied range of sports activities suitable for all age groups and ability levels. Essentially, this range comprises artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, apparatus gymnastics, and games exercises with their own national and cultural characteristics. Creativity knows no boundaries-a wealth of new ideas and varied designs were displayed at the World Gymnaestrada. The concept of the World Gymnaestrada with small- and large-group presentations (without any competitive element whatsoever strongly encourages the worldwide spread of general gymnastics .

Approximately 20,000 gymnasts from 35 nations showed their interpretations of general gymnastics . For added variety, the Berlin Gymnaestrada was attended by observation delegations from 14 FIG member federations .

The program of the 1995 Berlin World Gymnaestrada included a number of items organized by the General Gymnastics International Project (sponsor ofGeneral Gymnastics for the FIG). These were:

Observer Delegations Fourteen delegations comprising a total of 30 observers were invited by the General Gymnastics International Project to attend the Berlin World Gymnaestrada. The following countries each sent a delegation: Algeria, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bulgaria, Ecuador, Hong Kong, Hungary, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myamar, Romania, Singapore, Thailand, and Ukraine. The purpose of this measure was to familiarize delegations with the World Gymnaestrada as the only worldwide general gymnastics event organized officially by the FlG. It is expected that these FIG member federations (together with others) will send groups of performers to the 11th World Gymnaestrada in Gothborg, Sweden in 1999.

With the final scene of the 10th World Gymnaestrada in Berlin, the Swedish Gymnastics Federation "Svenska Gymnastik Foerbund" invited all FIG member federations to come to Goteborg and attend the 11 th World Gymnaestrada.

Goteborg is looking forward to the World Gymnaestrada -and the U.S. is looking forward to Goteborg!

A video entitled "Welcome to Goteborg and the 11th World Gymnaestrada 1999" contains much important information. It covers the following topic areas: An invitation to the 11 th World Gymnaestrada from the city of Goteborg.

Sports and other facilities for the entire World Gymnaestrada program.

Policy Affairs in General Gymnastics International Colloquium September 1-3, Brondby/Copenhagen This colloquium conducted out within the framework of the General Gymnastics International Project under the supervision of the FIG General Gymnastics Technical Committee (CTGG-FIG).

The meeting was attended by 40 participants from 24 nations members of the executive committees of FIG member federations, members of the FIG Executive Committee (CEjFIG), members of the FIG Technical Committee General Gymnastics (CTGG-FIG), and members of the Board of the General Gymnastics International Project.

The following was debated by the colloquium:

FIG Forum for FIG Member Federation Education Managers This two-day FIG Forum was presented during the World Gymnaestrada and was attended by: Education managers of FIG member federations attending the World Gymnaestrada, Education managers of FIG member federations sending observer delegations to the World Gymnaestrada, and FIG and European Gymnastics Union (UEG) Committee members.

The chances of general gymnastics around the world are closely related to current general trends of development prevailing in the field of sport. One of the aspects involved is maintenance of the FIG's position as an international gymnastics federation, which includes general gymnastics. Another aspect is the FIG's strategy to popularize general gymnastics in all countries of the globe through workshops, clinics, visitations, publications, and so forth.

After this situation had been discussed in outline at the General Gymnastics Technical Conference on the occasion of the 1994 FIG Congress in Geneva, it was intended to compile all arguments for and against opening the FIG at this colloquium.

> Status analyses as a basis for creating or extending general gymnastics programs, organizations, and training structures; > Bilateral and international general gymnastics events; and

It is essential to plan and conduct an aggressive campaign to promote general gymnastics worldwide, making use of the FIG's membership of the IOC and particularly of the "Sports For All" IOC Commission.

It is essential to develop strategies to popularize the Gymnaestrada idea, to strengthen the role of the World Gy~aestrada as the World' s most important leisure-sport meetmg, and to develop World Gymnaestradas into world games of exercise culture.

It appears sensible to create mechanisms of cooperation between the FIG and other international federations as well as, if necessary, to develop strategies to distinguish the FIG from other international leisure federations.

GYMNASTICS-A FUN ACTIVITY! Reported from Bowyer, GR, Student perceptions of physical education, JOPERD, Vol. 67, No . I, January, 1996, pp. 23-26.

recent article by Garry R. Bowyer in JOPERD magazine reports gymnastics as a fun activity. Preservice classroom teachers in an elementary physical education class were asked to recall from their elementary experiences their favorite and least favorite activities. The group consisting of 75 female and 10 male preservice elementary classroom teachers between the ages of 18 and 25 were also asked to tell why they liked or disliked the activities.

The results are shown in Tables 1 and 2.

It should be noted that students liked the opportunity to participate in fun, nonelimination activities where skills were developed progressively. Bowyer notes, "When students are given the opportunity to set individual goals and the incentive to reach their goals, they feel more satisfied with (fitness) testing. "

The following list of jumprope activities can be utilized to accomplish two goals depending on how they are applied: First, jumping rope can be performed as part of a low intensity phase of a plyometric program. Select 2-4 of the drills below and add them to your plyometric program. As with any plyometric program these drills should be done at the beginning of practice before the gymnast is fatigued. In general, plyometrics are performed only twice per week.

Second, the jumprope exercises shown below can be used as extra conditioning instead of running to help burn calories.

Jumping rope for 10 minutes at a rate of 120 turns per minute is equivalent to cycling for two miles in six minutes, running one mile in 12 minutes, jogging for 30 minutes, or swimming for 12 minutes. The benefit of jumping rope over these other exercises is that it will also help improve quickness and coordination of the gymnast's feet. Select at least four drills from the list below for this type of exercise program. Perform these exercises three to four times per week. The earlier in practice the exercises are performed the better. But, since this is not strict plyometrics, it can be used later in the practice session.

General Instructions 1.

Each exercise should be performed for 30 seconds to start and progress to 90 seconds. (Duration of a typical gymnastics event.)

Progress from approximately 70 turns of the rope to 120 turns per minute as the performance of the activity becomes easier.

Of course, the more turns of the rope per minute the more challenging the skill becomes for the gymnast.

It is very important to be quick off the ground . The foot stays in contact with the ground for as short a time as possible.

Do not sacrifice speed for form! Form/ alignment of the body is very important. You do not want to teach poor habits w ith any conditioning drill. (Keep the chin up, proper trunk alignment, and good toe point when appropriate).

8. Jump rope and do high knee marching while traveling forward.

9. Jump rope and perform pony steps (pony step, step to the right, pony step, step to the left, and repeat).

10. Jump rope and perform the grapevine dance step.

11. Jump rope and have the gymnast select different dance steps, can make it into a game like H.O.R.S.E. where each gymnast in a group selects a different drill and everyone else has to try the drill.

Isometric contraction is tension. Tension is a vital part of any gymnasts conditioning program.

The British National Coaching Foundation book, Physiology and Performance, describes isometric contraction as:

How do you teach a gymnast to have a good body tension?

Pre-requisite The abdominals must be strong, so first teach the sit-up.

Make sure you isolate the abdominal muscles.

When a muscle contracts isometrically, it develops tension, but there is no resulting movement, because the tension in the muscle exactly balances the opposing force.

This statement can be illustrated as follows:

If the legs are bent as shown, the work of the hip flexors (ilia psoas) should be cut-out. If the hands are kept on the back of the head, then a swinging action will be avoided.

This exercise must be done by lifting the upper half of the body. Arms can also be crossed on the chest.

Gymnast A stands with a slouching body and muscles looking soft.

Gymnast B stands erect with abdominal and gluteal muscles contracted but no significant change in body shape is made.

This posture is desirable for a gymnast.

If the hips are kept firmly on the ground and not swung upwards as the gymnast lies down in order to act as a counter balance to the upper body and make lifting easier, then only the abdominals will work. This exercise is one that the gymnast should repeat often. This is not a tension exercise, but abdominal strength is vital for mid-body tension.

Gymnast A will probably do a handstand like this: if she can't hold herself straight in the upright position, she has little chance of doing so in the inverted position.

This is one of the first exercises that should be given to gynmasts. Whatever discipline, whatever age, the gymnast must be able to maintain this shape.

Again the hand is placed on the soft part of the gluteals. Press gently yet firmly. As soon as the back gives, the coach should lower the gynmast to the floor.

Here pressure is applied to the gluteals by the coach or partner. This pressure must be constant and not sudden jerking. Note the weight must be applied to the rounded part of the bottom and not the waist or middle of the back.

This similar exercise tests and improves tension in the shoulder joint. This is very important for handspring actions. The shoulder must not move forward .

First the ankles are just held for about 10 seconds. When the gymnast is familiar and okay w ith these positions, then the ankles can be released alternately. Again, the coach should watch the body shape, particularly the waist area w hen the gymnast is on the hands. Watch for creases in the leotard at this point-a smooth leotard is correct.

With the feet just slightly off the floor, the coach presses down at the ankles. Often the gymnast is capable of performing only two or three presses.

NATIONAL MEMBERSHIP REPRESENTATIVES TOTHEUSA GYMNASTICS BOARD OF DIRECTORS Purpose USA Gymnastics Bylaws require that two representatives from each of the three disciplines (Men, Women, and Rhythmic) be elected to serve on the USA Gymnastics Board of Directors.

3. Nomination applications must be received by the appropriate Men's Regional Chairman no later than March 1,1996.

4. The Regional Chairman will utilize his state chairmen and other such persons appropriate to select the top two individuals to be nominated from that Region.

5. The Program Committee will canvas the 18 maximum candidates and select the top six as indicated by result of vo ting.

These six names are to be placed on the National Ballot. This will occur at the J.O. National Championships in May. 6. The National Ballot will be included in the July issue of Technique and must be returned to the National Office no later than Oct. 1,1996.

7. The term of office will be four years.

Criteria for Nomination Any individual nominating or being nominated must be a USA Gymnastics Professional member in good standing for a m inimum of five years.

Must be interested, enthusiastic and willing to commit the time and work required to be an active contributing Director of the Corporation.

Must be actively involved in the respective USA Gynmastics competitive program (men's, women's, or rhythmic).

Men's and Women's Program Candidates: Cannot currentl y be a member of any USA Gymnastics standing or special committee.

Rhythmic Candidates: May be a member of any USA Gymnastics standing or special committee.

Cannot be a USA Gymnastics employee or an officer of USA Gymnastics or an officer or director of any organization which appoints individuals to serve as directors of USA Gymnastics.

B. Roetzheim communicated that there was a loophole that w ould allow a gymnast to be substituted into the competitive lineup for the 1995 World Championships in Sabae. The organizing committee is only going to issue seven credentials, however, according to the French versions of the Code of Points, a gymnasts could be substituted prior to the start of the competition .
