Key Strategic Factors: W6at you must have to succeed!

Personal Traits These necessary entrepreneurial traits may be natural or developed through experience!

Either way, if you desire to succeed in the children's fitness industry, you must acquire the following characteristics:

An eye for opportunitythis means" see a need and fill it." This can involve old, new, or a mixed bag of services. Don't rely on just your own vision for this; involve your staff- the more brains, the better.

An appetite for hard work and the need to achievethe almost compulsive desire to succeed; the long hours now will payoff in shorter hours and more free time later!

Discipline-do what is most essential first. Focus on real priorities and tough problems. In most cases, there is no way around, you must go through the uncomfortable situations that arise. Fortunately, once you solve a problem, it makes your future operations much easier.

Independence-a strong personal drive is a necessity, but the ability to work as a member of a management team is important, too . You must be able to inspire teamwork among the various programs. You set the tone; you can be neither too "lone wolf" nor too "chummy" with your staff-find the balance.

Self-confide nee-this characteris tic can help you overcome enormous obstacles, which you and your company will certainly come across . Remember, false self-confidence backfires; let people know when you don't know -contribute energetically when they feel that they are really helping by using their creative or specialized skills. None of us have all the answers, so be objective about your weaknesses.

Adaptability-adjust to changing demands of a growing business. The natural cycle of a business changes - from growth, expansion, maturity, and disposition or transfer to new owners. There are different management skills needed at each one of these stages. You will either need to acquire or hire these skills to stay in business. Also, changing local, regional, and national economies and demographics will alter the way you present your services.

Judgment-being able to manage others' work and synthesize their contributions; being able to make decisions; and being able to correct mistakes quickly.

Ability to tolerate stressproblems will occur! You will need the support of your family, hobbies, some physical release or sport activity, and a spiritual foundation to base your life work.

A focus on profits-understand the need to make a profit; sales do not equal profits; you need real profits (ROI) to grow or expand the business.

Access to Space You will need to evaluate the "location versus square footage cost" issue. Although you can always take more square footage than you need, this makes you a temporary landlord until you are ready to expand into other programs. This can be accomplished if: your city has a reasonable vacancy rate, you charge only the going rate for space, and you can handle landlord stress!

Access to Capital You will need money to expand. You may finance growth through cash flow alone-this takes longer, but is safer. We usually try to be the "first to market" with a new product or program, so obtaining additional funds and paying interest becomes an acceptable risk.

The usual" mix" of financial resources include: cash flow personal funds relatives bank funds SBA funds

Consistent and enthusiastic staff-energy and direction are transmitted by owners to their staff! You'll be AMAZED at their versatility when permitted to exercise their own unique talents and creative energies!

Quality programming and curriculums-Insist on attention to these areas from your

staff. It will help the students and in future staff training.

Commitment to convenient, quality, and aesthetic facilities-you can raise your standards over time-have a picture in mind of what you'd like your facility to ultimately look like! Improvements over time are preferable to an "all at once" shot, so your customers and your staff can see you are constantly re-investing in the business.

Annual and quarterly, "strategic plans" for each activity-how are you going to grow each program in terms of marketing, numbers, and dollars?

Ongoing creativity and innovation-your managementteam(s) need to realize that business is never static; you may think your operation is stable, but it is not. Each client, staff member, community, and industry is in constant change.

You must find a way to stay abreast of current and future changes. Membership in Association of Children' s Fitness Facilities (AOCFF) will allow you to anticipate and adapt to changes ahead of the curve.

Frank is the owner of a 35,000 square foot multi-purpose facility that combines gy mnastics, preschool motor fitness, swimming, dance, cheerleading, self defense, indoor rock climbing, indoor playground and party center, sports d ay canlps, aerobics, a preschool, miniature golf, and more. He is the founder of the Association of Children's Fitness Facilities, which offers consulting seminars and mail order programs for companies w ho w ish to expand their progran1 offerings.

6 he 10th World Gymnaestrada held in Berlin, Germany, July 915, was a fantastic cultural experience for the United States delegation. This was the first time for USA Gymnastics to send a full delegation to this general gymnastics event. The delegation was represented by gymnastics clubs from California, Indiana, Massachusetts, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Coming from all over of the world, participants represented various etlmic groups, cultures, and ways of performing. More than 20,000 participants from 35 countries attended the event, representing Australia, Austria, Egypt, Belgium, Brazil, China, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, United Kingdom, Ireland, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Canada, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Namibia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sou th Africa, Czechia, and the United States.

The festivities began with a spectacular opening ceremony in the historical Berlin Olympic Stadium, where the 300 U.s. delegates participated in the official entry of the nations. "I am thrilled just to be able to participate in this event," said Betsy Griffith, a coach of Maverick Gynmastics Club.

The rest of the week was primarily devoted to rehearsals, group performances, and attending evening performances of various countries. "The magnitude of this event is phenom-

enal. You just don't realize how big it is until you experience it," said Cheryl Johnson, choreographer of the McKeon School of Gymnastics and Dance.

The U.S. was asked to participate in the English Speaking National Evening along with Great Britain and Canada. Also, the delegation was chosen to participate in the prestigious FIG Gala with 1,200 participants from five continents and 12 countries. "The chaos of the rehearsals developed into a beautiful show featuring performers from all corners of the world. It was amazing!" said USA Gymnas tics choreo gra pher, Paula Hilliker.

By the end of the week, the participants, parents, and coaches began to realize how fortunate they were to be able to experience such an extraordinary event. " It's all about sharing and has to do with broadening their scope of gymnastics.

Our group is very proud of the United States and I think they realized how much they appreciate what they have," said Barbara Murray Taylor, group leader of Maverick Gymnastics Club. Sylvia Laznovsky, assistant for SOKOL KHB said, "I think everyone will take away the realization that there is much more to gymnastics than what we have known."

Everyone who attended and participated found that not only was this event about celebrating the sport of gymnastics, but also how gynmastics plays an important role in cultural exchange and can create fun and friendships. "This certainly is going to go down in the books as one of those great life experi-

ences, " said Murray Taylor.

"I can tell you that this event was a most moving experience-I' ve never seen anything like this. This is the greatest event for world peace, because everyone goes away with a joyous feeling about meeting people from all over the world," said Dennis David, parent, Fallbrook Gymnastics Club.

The week was officially declared over at the closing ceremony celebrated by various

large group performances and a special performance from the Swedish delegation inviting everyone to participate in the 1999 World Gymnaestrada in Gotenborg, Sweden.

"This is the greatest experience the kids have ever had.

Now tha t our parents have seen how much fun it is, they want to participate at the next World Gymnaestrada in Sweden," said Dean Capelotti, group leader, Fallbrook Gymnastics Club.

he third annual National GymFest will be held in Carmel, Ind ., October 27- 30, 1995. The 1995 N ational GymFest will prove to be a spectacular event with more participants than ever before!

Performance Opportunities Group Performances Each group w ill h ave the opportunity to register to perform their own display number. Practice times w ill be scheduled for Friday morning, Oct. 27. Performances w ill begin at 4:00 PM on Friday.

Indianapolis Colts Half-time Show Groups are encouraged to sign-up for the Gym Fest Finale presentation at the Indianap olis Colts Half-time Show on Sunday afternoon a t the RCA Dome.

Th e performance w ill include special choreography developed by experts in the field for the following disciplines: artistic gymnas tics, rhythmic gymnastics, jump rope, and adult / general gymnastics.

Groups must request tapes of the choreography prior to coming to the GymFest. Special Finale rehearsal sessions will be conducted at Carmel Clay JHS and at the RCA Dome.

Performance Parameters Performance area-One 42' x 42' matted floor exercise area w ill be provided.

Groups will be able to utilize the floor area to stage right and left of the mat.

Two separa te gyms w ill be utilized at the school for rehearsals and performances.

Group performance length (time)-Suggested length of displays is between 6-9 minute s. Maxim um time in the performance area during rehearsal is 15 minutes.

Gala performance length (time)-Maximum length is thr ee minutes. This should be one integrated number. It may be a highlight from the group number, or a specially choreographed display.

Theme-The theme for the 1995 National GymFest will be Cirque de Gymnastique. Just as the world recognized" Cirque d e Soleil's" creatively expanding the tradi tional concept of the circus, Cirque de Gymnastique w ill encourage great imagination and diversity in choreography, music selection, and costuming for gymnastics.

What Do We Do? What kinds of performances (displays) are permissible? Almost anything! Large and small groups. Artistic gymnastics, d a nc e, rh y thmic, ae robi cs, clown, and many other possibilities exist. Group m embers may be m ale, female, or mixed groups of all ages- children to seniors. GG is a fantastic activity for your club members who don' t usually get the chance to travel to participate in USAG programs.

NOTE: Each registered Group (Club) will receive two Leader credentials at no charge.

All groups interested in performing in the Gala on Saturday evening, must so indicate on the appropriate form. Gala groups must prepare a separate Gala perfo rmance number (no longer than three minutes) .

he treatment of rips has become a part of gymnastics folk lore through the years. You can listen to coaches proudly boast, "When I was a gymnast I had a rip the size of a silver dollar and I just tore the skin off with my teeth, spit on the rip, and went back on the bar!" There are many treatments that have been tried and sworn to be effective through the years.

Preparation H or o ther hemorrhoid ointments have been used to reduce tissue swelling and some have a topical anesthetic to help numb the rip.

Bag Balm which is a veterinary balm applied to cows' utters because they have a tendency to crack/split.

Bag Balm is used to help treat fresh rips or as a hand conditioner to prevent rips.

A small balloon taped over the rip may help. The friction generated between the bars and the tape causes the balloon to rub against its inner surfaces and prevents motion between the balloon and the rip.

Tuff Skin (a taping base) sprayed onto a fresh rip, has been reported to help heal rips-this is not recommended.

Another fairly common trea tment is soaking the freshly ripped hand in a 10 percent bleach in water solution-this also is not recommended.

Gibson (1-800-275-5999) sells DAT Sticks which is a series of three balms: a callous stick used prior to workouts to promote toughening of calluses, a condition stick which is used at night to keep calluses smooth and pliable; and a rip stick used to help heal fresh rips .

The company, 10.0 (1-800241-9249), sells Spenco "Rip Kits" which contains "2nd Skin" (a h ydrogel dressing) to help with fresh rips and to help prevent and protect rips. The kit also contains pressure foam pads and adhesive knit.

10.0 also sells a "skin freeze" which is a spray that will cool down hot hands to reduce skin irritation.

Dunlap makes a skin protector called "Compeed" which can be used in practice to protect the fresh rip and also helps to heal these rips. This can be found in many sporting-goods stores and bicycle shops.

10. Neoprene rubber wrist bands are used to prevent rips on the wrists from dowel grips.

11. G.A. Deitch (717-697-3107) makes a lanolin protective

glove which is worn underneath the regular grip as a "undergrip."

12. Of course the tape grip made out of white trainer's tape to protect a rip is a standard, but I recommend using Johnson & Johnson Elastikon elastic tape instead.

13. Trimming calluses (with a "Pyrex Corn and Callus Shaver") is important to help prevent rips from occurring.

14. DuoDERM and Nova Derm sterile occlusive dressings and Op-sight and Bioclusive transparent moisture vapor permeable h ypoallergenic viral barriers.

Recommended treatment for rips Prevention of infection is the first thing to consider when treating a rip. I have seen improperly-treated rips develop cellulitis (blood poisoning) and required intravenous (IV) antibiotics for treatment of the wound. The most important thing to do after a rip occurs is to wash the hand with warm water and a mild soap. The latest medical research shows that soap and warm water is more effective in treating wounds than using Betadine (providone iodine) or hydrogen peroxide.

Hydrogen peroxide should not be used as a general wound cleaner unless recommended by a physician. It has been determined that hydrogen peroxide is too caustic for the wound and

destroys healthy cells and can actually delay healing. Betadine has also been shown to be too strong and can damage cells when applied to a wound.

Betadine is still used as a preoperation skin preparation and is used for cleaning wounds in the Emergency Room prior to suturing lacerations. However, the Betadine is diluted with sterile water and is rarely used without being watered down.

The most effective way of cleaning wounds is by irrigating it well w ith water and washing i, w ith warm soapy water.

Once the rip has been washed and dried to prevent infection, then a sterile bandage should be applied. The type of sterile bandage depends on the severity of the rip and the cost of treating the wound. The inexpensive way of treating minor rips is by applying a triple antibiotic ointment (Neosporin) to a sterile bandage and covering the wound with this bandage.

Change the bandage when it becomes wet.

The most effective way to speed up the healing process is to utilize the expensive bandage protocol. After the wound has been cleaned with soapy water and dried, apply DuoDERM Extra Thin CGF Spot dressing.

DuoDERM dressings have a skin contact adhesive layer containing h ydroactive particles that interact with fluid produced by the wound . This forms a moist gel which provides a great environment for cell mi路 gration, leading to rapid healing. You should not add a triple antibiotic ointment (Neosporin) to the wound when DuoDERM is used because it may actually

delay healing. Some studies (Xakellis and Chrischilles) have shown a 46 percent faster healing rate than using gauze bandages. This moist gel protects the wound from re-injury when the dressing is removed. With gauze bandages, the wound dries out and sticks to the dressing and newly formed tissue tears away when the bandage is removed (Tudhope).

DuoDERM dressings present a functional barrier to external contamination with infection rates up to five times lower than gauze bandages (Hutchinson). It can be left on up to seven days in a row before needing to be changed. The gymnast may wash their hands and even shower and keep the dressing in place. With the Extra Thin DuoDERM gymnasts can even swing bars with the

DuoDERM can be used when the gymnast rips again in the future. Since many medical insurance companies cover the use of DuoDERM the only cost to the gymnast is the prescriptionco-pay. DuoDERM is available over-the-counter at many pharmacies. A pharmacy connected to a hospital or one which sells hospital supplies is the best source for DuoDERM. Remember to use the extra-thin type of DuoDERM. No matter what type of dressing used to cover a wound, signs of infection need to be assessed. These signs of infection include: a foul order, pus or yellowish discharge (exudate), redness (erythema), and fever.

If these signs develop the wound should be evaluated by a physician for further cleaning and the use of antibiotics.

INTERNATIONAL RHYTHMIC SYMPOSIUM REPORT Tricia Adkins In May 1995, a rhythmic gymnastics symposium was held in Paris, France. Experts from around the world gathered together to discuss the sport and share ideas. Former Rhy thmic National Group member Tricia Adkins, who is living in Paris, was hired by USA Gymnastics to attend the symposium and translate the material into English. Below is Tricia's report.

Each member does her own thing to accomplish one group movement. This must be done in collaboration w ith other gymnasts . The choreographer must be careful in doing this so as all is clear and comprehensible. This sort of movement has a tendency to be disorderly and must be avoided.

Compsition of Individual Exercises Nechka Robeva Before starting, the choreographer must take into account the temperament of the gymnast, her intellectual and physical capabilities and her spirituality and artistic sense. When choosing music, know what it means and what it represents. For example, don' t use folklore .unless you know the history and emotion of it.

Once the music is chosen, have the gymnast show all of her own ideas, they can then be kept or rejected. The more ideas she has the more rich and original the routine will be. The choreographer must know the strengths and weaknesses so as to accent and deaccent them. Most importantly, have the routine look good from all sides and not only from the judges angle.

Artistic and Expressive Dimension in Individual Routines N. Robeva, A.M. Lemettre, S. Barriere, D. Muller Facial expression alone is not acceptable. This, according to N. Ro beva, isn't even expression. It is only mimicking. There must be a correspondence between movem ent and expression and it can' t be too much. Facial expression/ mimicking has nothing to do w ith it. There must be body expression that comes from the inside. The gymnas t can' t just " smile," she must know why she is smiling. The movement must be lived interiorly; but unfortunately this cannot always be differentiated in the score. Cliches, superflu, false expressions and mimicking must be done away w ith. Take into account w hat the gymnast can interpret and don' t try to pull anything off. This is especially valid for yo unger gymnasts since they aren' t yet able to express deep emotions. At the same time, the

possibilities of the younger gymnasts must be considered. H appy, simple music must be used for younger kids so that they can relate to it. This way their exp ressions will be natural.

Artistic expression must be worked on from the beginning of training w ith youn ger children since it comes little by little. One way to do this is to give one gymnast a story to dance out wile the others try to guess what it is.

Flexibility in RSG Sabina Macovei Correct flexibility w ill lessen energy expenditure and, while working flexibility, the strength of muscles must be worked as well. For example, m any weaker gymnasts do split leaps w ith their hips out of line. They lack muscles to keep them in line.

Physical Preparation of Gymnasts Natalia Kovzmina The objective of physical preparation is to develop the gymnasts' entire body. This includes general exercises which strengthen the body and are not directly related to the sport of RSG itself. For example, jogging, sprinting, biking or swimming. Until recently we did not think this physical preparation was necessary and were convinced that RSG only would be enough to prepare the qualities needed for a rhythmic gymnast but we soon saw that the top gymnasts had an ad ap ted physical preparation. With the new FIG cod e rules, this physical preparation is even more important.

The rhythmic gymnast needs to have a good physical condition before execu ting rhythmic elements in order to avoid mistakes.

She also must have a good heart. Endurance is needed to perform elements especially at the end of a routine and must be worked w ith all gymnasts including even the youngest.

The most important exercises train flexibility, coordination, balance, speed, muscular force, jumping ability and endurance.

The best time to develop these qualities is between the ages of seven and fourteen. The girls usually do not understand w hy this preparation is necessary; therefore, the coach must continually explain and persuade.

Flexibility Without it good technique is impossible. Sample exercises: grand battement-with held leg at end done to fro nt, side and back

for ankles-in crab walk position with toes under, kick one leg up for shoulders-lie on stomach with arms overhead; gymnast lifts them as high as she can then has a partner stretch them; do same exercise with arms in back

Coordination This is very important and directly related to technical preparation. The m ore a gymnast knows w hat her body is doing, the faster she will learn other movements. These exercises work muscle control and nervous stability. Sample exercises: small tosses into a basket 路 ju ggling with one or two hands w ith ball or clubs

Balance Extremely important, in competition balance accounts fo r 40% of mistakes. Sample exercises: d oing tu rns with closed and open eyes, working on balance at the end d o a balance for 10-15 seconds going up and down on toe; then change the angle or the center of gravity of the balance and repeat exercise

Speed Sample exercises: gymnast can work on quick rolls 路 gymnast has her back to partner; partner throws apparatus and gymnast must turn and catch in a different position each time.

Muscular Force w ith leg on barre-plie/ straight/high toe from deep lunge position-stand up and swing back leg up to front balance position lie on side-lift legs and upper body backward tricep pushups on a block-as m any as can be done in a set number of seconds exercises for force such as jumping with weights must be done with speed as a factor so as not to develop huge muscle mass

Jumping ability jumps up onto a block and down jumps forward and backward jumps over an obstacle-rope or beam jumps can be of different sorts-tuck, straddle, straight all jumps can be done with speed as a factor in a set number of seconds between each series of jumps take a 2-minute break

Osteo-articulary fragility Another problem for these young girls is osteo-articulary fragility.

Problems with stretching-when girls are stretched the wrong way, ligaments are pulled too far and the bottom part of the bone will slide which is very serious, particularly for growing bones.

Malnutrition A third medical problem that comes from inadequate diet is malnutrition. Malnutrition results in bone fragility. Wrist x-rays were taken of high level French gymnasts. The result was bone fragility from malnutrition usually only found in third world countries. This is very serious and coaches cannot say just anything to gymnasts, for example, "don't eat today, you need to lose a pound." Coaches must think first of other options and especially of the vitamins and other requirements of growing girls. Coaches must talk to gymnasts and parents in order to get the gymnast eating right.

2. Within each class, Class 1 and Class 2, the percentage of competitors incurring more than 2.0 points in total execution deductions increased from Preliminaries to All-Around finals. In both cases, the percentage of competitors incurring less than 1.0 in total execution deductions decreased.

3. Developmental "D's" do not appear to playa significant rile toward satisfying the difficulty requirements in Class 1 and 2.

Note that there is a very small increase in percentage of competitors not meeting difficulty requirements under J.O. evaluation and strict FIG evaluation.

4. Interestingly enough, the percent of competitors missing the "3-hand placement" requirement versus the " B's on the end" requirement fli p-flopped between Preliminaries and All-Around finals.

5. Junior Elite 1 and 2 The same logic holds true for Junior Elite 1 and 2, although the gymnast will not earn additional bonus in these classes for fulfilling FIG requirements. During the competition, inverted giants and Tkatchevs were the most commonly seen Developmental "D" parts. Learning these skills gives the greatest potential to raise one's score. It ap pears that the Developmental "D" parts on the horizontal bar are being effectively used.

Comments 1. All gymnasts in Junior Elite 1 and 2 met the requirement for an in-bar skill of "B" value. Throughout the entire competition, by

far the most common "D" skill was the overgrip Endo with 1/2 turn. The most common deduction on the skill was for not turning in the handstand. All turns should take place within the 10 degree nominal handstand position.

2. The most common fli:ght element shown was the Tkatchev (straddled) . The most common deduction was for bent knees on the beat prior to the vault. Additionally, some gymnasts need to work on locking their arms on the giant that followed.

3. The most common structural problems were the variations of the Endo done below handstand, and then swinging down to a back giant. In order to receive "B" value, the Endo must go to handstand-anything less than a nominal handstand receives "A" value, and there fore, also will not meet the requirement for aninbar skill of at least"B" value. Additionally, swinging down to a back giant is treated as a part of no value and receives a 0.2 deduction.

4. Class 3 The most bonus valuable skill to learn in Class 3 is the Inverted Giant. Two in succession are valued at"D+D," givingO .2forthe "D" skills, and 0.1 for the connection. In addition, in Class 3, the gymnast earns 0.2 for fulfilling the dorsal requirement, An exercise with two inverted giants, therefore, begins with 0.5 in bonus .

For the most part, the Developmental "D" parts seem to be working on the horizontal bar. The major flight elements and inverted giants were all in use throughout the competition.

There is a noticeable increase in the level as compared to 1994. in 1994, the greatest amount of bonus earned in Junior Elite 1 was 0.4 by four individuals. The most "D" parts performed was three. This year, there were two individuals who earned 1.0 in bonus, with the average being 0.4-0.5. Junior Elite 2 and Class 3 rules are different enough to prevent such direct comparison.

Nevertheless, the number of individuals showing "D" parts, and completing requirements in 1995 is ahead of 1994.

8. Bonus considerations for the future The Developmental "D" parts can continue to direct the development of gymnasts on horizontal bar. The four major flight elements and the inverted giants have been successfully implemented and utilized. The early pirouette to Endo/Stalder has bee less widely utilized and could probably be dropped as a Developmental "D." Another area to consider instead, is to accord additional bonus to higher level flight elements, or to directly connected flight elements, in a manner similar to the way additional bonus is given to FIG value "D" double saltos on floor. Using the same strategy, stretched Tkatchev would earn an additional 0.1 (total of 0.2), and a Tkatchev-Tkatchev would also earn an additional 0.1 (for a total of 0.4). Currently, this combination earns the same as two inverted giants .

For bonus, the next most valuable skills are the Tkatchev which will earn 0.3 (0.1 for a Developmental "D") and 0.2 for fulfilling the flight requirement, and a "C" value dismount that the gymnast can land without deduction (0.1 for the "C" and 0.2for the landing).

Taken as a whole, an exercise with inverted giants, one of the flight elements, and a stuck dismount can earn all ten bonus tenths .

In gymnastics thi s would mean blaming the coach, judge, equipment, and so forth w hen things don't go right. Such athletes often cast themselves in the role of "victim." Over time this usually leads to the development of a negative view of others. It is a very big sign of immaturity when seen in adolescents .

Dr. Joe Massimo ost people find anger a very unpleasant emotion. It can cause dramatic physical changes such as increased heartbeat, sweating, and even nausea. Gymnasts and coaches, being human, are subject to the same emotion. The coach-gymnast relationship is one where patience oft en stretches thin in both directions resulting in feelings of anger.

Research, however, has clearly shown that anger is a natural part of every healthy relationship.

To better understand the dynamics involved in dealing with these feelings, first we must know several things about anger as an emotion.

1. Anger can often serve sev-

eral psychological purposes.

It is a mistake to always link anger to personal conflict.

People often use expressed anger in the wrong way to meet a variety of questionable emotional needs.

2. Anger usually develops as

the result of other emotions.

Fear and anxiety can quickly change into anger and be so expressed in the gym during training. In reality, the angry gymnast may be a frightened athlete. Sometimes these transfers from the emotion of anger become habitual and the gymnast loses awareness of the original situation from which the emotion derived.

This can really spell trouble in the learning process.

4. People are often unaware that personal needs are being met by their anger. Although it is relatively easy to recognize our anger, it is sometimes not as easy to identify the emotional issues causing it. For example, the coach putting you down may be the surface issue, but the real reason for the resulting anger may have more to do with your feelings of low self-esteem-the put-down merely serves as a stark reminder of this.

Misuse of anger is easy and it is important to be aware of this possibility. This kind of response can take its toll on a coach-gymnast relationship and limit gymnastics progress. In these situations, there is a feeling generated that things can get out of control. One or the other party can become defensive or even counterattack. Feelings of guilt often follow displays of irrational anger or loss of temper that can do further serious damage to the learning process so essential in gymnastics.

To gain more insightinto this emotion, it is important to look for a pattern in your expression of anger.

Creating emotionally more healthy relationships is a worthwhile personal goal for everyone.

Below are some possibilities to consider. Some are common, some are less so, some are subtle, and others blatant-all are destructive to the working relationship and to the overall sense of self. Although they apply to athletes and coaches alike, athletes tend to display Abuses 14, while Abuses 5 and 6 are seen most often in the behavior of coaches.

This abuse often occurs when the gymnast is insecure or unable to admit fault for something going wrong. It is "blame

This kind of gymnast first needs to accept that no one is perfect. This is very difficult if the youngster is a perfectionist by nature and/ or the parents are very demanding expecting their child to be the top at everything. The next task focuses on separating the self from mistakes or setbacks. An error on the apparatus does not make the individual gymnast a bad person . Often it becomes necessary to set aside false pride and learn to apologize or accept the situation. When this occurs, the gymnast begins to learn from his/her mistakes rather than blinded by them. Failure here results in the gymnast shutting out helpful information while blaming someone else for what happened.

Abuse Two Directing anger at a scapegoat.

This is a very bad habit and difficul t to control. This is when you become angry in a situation in which it would be very hard or inappropriate to express your feelings. For example, the coach said something that really got you agitated, but you can't express it because he or she might explode; so you keep it inside.

Later you take out your frustrated feelings on some unsuspecting safe target such as a brother, sister, parent, or even fellow gymnast. Such innocent bystanders get the brunt of your anger just because they are at hand and a little safer.

The first step is to calm down and deal tactfully with the real source of your feelings. If you can't approach the head coach, for example, perhaps you can find a sensitive listener that is not directly involved such as the assistant coach or a fellow gymnast. An objective listener can often help you think through the incident and just letting it out will help . Eventually, when more relaxed, it is a good idea to make your feelings known to the source. Hopefully they will be open enough to give you the time and to also listen to your perspective. This kind of clearing of the air can help prevent future conflicts.

Abuse Three Anger used to express and reduce anxiety or inside tension.

Related to Abuse Two, this is by far one of the most common emotional abuses of anger. In gymnastics, tension and frustration can definitely build up.

Although you may be able to keep it under control, that is not always the case. Often once out of the gym these feelings get expressed in ways that are a strain on relationships with others. Outbursts in the gym can also occur and they don' t win you any respect.

Corrective Behavior What is sometimes needed is a transitional time to emotionally downshift to a more relaxed state. This is one reason I often suggest to coaches that they give athletes a cooling off period before they leave the gym for home. This can involve some additional stretching time or even hard conditioning. Besides the phYSical benefits of this time it is an opportunity to burn off any collected frustration that has gathered during the apparatus training.

This immature method is sometimes a holdover from childhood. Many youngsters have learned in the past that if they create enough fuss they will get what they want. Although this is usually not very successfulin the gym, especially with a strong and secure coach, athletes sometimes substitute a less obvious bu t more often seen method related to anger. Pouting and sulking are such forms that can bring results. After a while the coach will begin to sense the manipulation. This entire abuse of the emotion of anger is not good for any working relationship.

Corrective Behavior Of primary importance is that those who have yielded to any displays in the past must stop reinforcing the behavior.

They need to hold the line and do what is right for the group, not for you . The gymnast needs to learn more crowd-pleasing ways to solve the problems that are making this behavior appear and become more respectful and understanding of the needs of teammates.

Abuse Five Using anger as a motivational technique.

This misuse of the emotion of anger is a technique favored principally by those coaches who believe that the only real motive for good work is a sense of fear. Typically outbursts of anger and threats of dire consequences produce the fear. A byproduct of this sty Ie of coaching is the development of an adversary relationship between the athletes and the coach. Growing resentment goes with any prod uced effort. Respect generated by fear is not any respect at all. It may get results in the short run, but the situation remains the same each time the task is approached. It will not be long

under these conditions until the entire training-learning model breaks down.

Corrective Behavior Rewarding gymnasts in a positive way for the work they do well is at the core of all sound learning and is the only way to overcome this misuse of anger in the future. First, the coach must see the good. This is easy to say, but difficult to accomplish. Some coaches can't do it, even with training. The coaches and the athletes who stay with them have my unending sympathy. Such a situation is always destructive and doomed to failure. Encouragement, support, and positive strokes encourage cooperating and instill ongoing motivation. At the very least, negative criticism should be done privately, sparing some team members and maintaining whatever morale might still exist

Abuse Six Anger that results from giving too much to others.

By nature many coaches are giving people. They give of their time, energy, commitment, and knowledge. Problems occur for such people when they have little ability or the time to give to themselves. Deep resentment can grow within and often results in unexpected outbursts that are the result of this personal frustration. The hidden message may be, "I'm giving so much to everyone else. Why isn't anyone giving anything back to me-not even hard work and results?"

Corrective Behavior It is important for the coach to recognize that she or he has created a situation in which others probably take them for granted. Once accomplished the coach decides what is needed from others and begins to give to him or herself as well. Beware, however, that you will

have to break down some negative precedents already set in the minds of the gymnasts . If you are a coach struggling with these feelings per ha ps a modes t beginning would be to let your gymnasts know that you expect a" thanks" from them at the end of each workout. With this as a start maybe more and more personal rewards will be forthcoming that will help you with the anger associated with being unappreciated.

There are others that are too numerous to list but easily derived by those who care to do so. In out sport today, we have great interest in the achievement of excellence and strive with great energy towards that objective. That is fine and the way it should be. Often, there is too much anger, frustration, impatience, and too little joy associated with our efforts. Life is all too short and relationships too valuable to have them threatened by a lack of emotional control. Nowhere is this more relevant than in the coach-gymnast interaction where the abuse and misuse of anger can readily occur. Maturing beyond the destructive uses of anger has benefits of, fulfilling relationships, rising self-esteem, and even enhancement of health. As people grow within this regard they find that anger is less a factor.

With a growing sense of control people become more likable to themselves and to others. A calmer self releases more emotional energy that can be used productively. Creating emotionally more healthy relationships is a worthwhile personal goal for everyone.

tion for Teachers (KAT) pilot workshop was held at the 1995 USA Gymnastics Congress, in New Orleans, August 16.

Seventy-six preschool teachers/ directors were selected to attend the workshop by either recommendation from their respective state director or by submitting a letter of interest. Each a ttendee was required to h ave at least five years teaching preschool gymnastics. The teaching requirement was necessary in order to utilize their experience and expertise to receive their feedback, evaluation, and comments. Their input was very helpful and will prove to be an effective tool for refining and reorganizing the workshop and accompanying workbook for the second pilot workshop in Plainfield, Indiana, November, 4 and 5, 1995.

Workshop Information USA Gymnastics is proud to present the second Level I Kinder Accreditation for Teachers (KAT) pilot workshop which will be hosted by Hoosier Gymnastics Training Center in Plainfield, Indiana, (a suburb of Indianapolis), November 4-5.

Tentative Schedule Saturday, November 4 5:00 PM-9:00 PM Sunday, November 5 9:00 AM-2:00 PM (lunch included) This accreditation is for all levels of preschool teachers. The pilot workshop functions as a "testing ground" to refine and perfect the workshop content and format. Your input will prove to be a valuable tool to enhance the final accreditation program scheduled to be officially a national program in January 1996.

Warren announced numbers of qualified to the u.s. Classics. Hotel space is limited. The office has organized the rooming assignments to ensure that our athletes and coaches are accommodated.

A direct mailing will go out on Tuesday to all qualifiers.

Kreutzer informed the committee that a form for reporting regional activities and concerns will be designed and sent by the office. Roe reminded the committee to review their job responsibilities and to assume a leadership role on the regional elite board in order to guarantee the Rules and Policies are followed.

TOPs

Discussion on the progressive development of the TOPs Program. Committee requested that more communication and educational materials be distributed to the clubs participating in TOPs. Warren will work as directed to present a draft of a model to the committee.

It was suggested that the Regional Elite Chairman identify an individual State TOPs Chairman.

VIII. Old Business Discussion concerning the minimum bar specification for the National Level. The Committee requested that some guidance be given to u s on the anticipated bar specification for 1996 and beyond.

IX.

Administrative Board Report

K. Feldmann reminded the committee that in 1996 there is an election of the Chairman of the Elite Committee. The election will take place in the fall with the nominations published in the Technique magazine. The Chairman is elected by the Elite Regional officers and the current National Chairman. An Election Commission will be designated with ballots mailed to them. The term of office begins on September 1, 1996.

Motion to support the Administrative Board request, that the election of the National Chainnan for the Elite Program will be conducted in the fall of 1996.

Old Business: Judges' Fee Structure The commi ttee recommended that the national office discuss an amendment to the current USAG Judges' Fee Structure with NAWGJ in regards to Regional meet fees.

Clarification: The 1.00 deduction for the coach on the Floor Exercise ma t was d esigned for coaches who intentionally step onto the Floor Exercise mat to assist the gymnast. There is NO deduction applied if the coach inadvertently steps onto the corner of the Floor Exercise mat while removing a skill cushion.

Section VIII of the Women's Rules and Policies was a mended for 1995-96 to properly reflect the procedures presently utilized in the selection of officials.

Clarification: For the basis of score inquiry, Video Review is O NLY allowed at Elite Classic and above meets.

Equipment Clarification: A "sting" mat is allowed on the vault runway for hand placement fo r Round-off Entry vaults.

Last JCI Board mee ting was held in February. C. Hamilton reviewed the change in personnel and duties, as sta ted in the JCI minutes that were published in the Techn ique magazine.

The WTC was asked to consider how judges w ill be certified (how many levels, e tc.) once the new J. O. Program is introduced in Spring of 1997.

K. Feldmarm reported on the activities of the Administrative Board. Primary work has been on preparation fo r Congress and the State Chairman Workshops. Terms of office and the election procedures were reviewed and the Operating Code has been amended and will be published with the updates.

She asked that the committee approve the procedure for the election of the WTC Committee Chairs.

Motion to accept the election procedures and term of office as suggested by the Administrative Board (Election in 1996 be for a term of two years, in order to begin a new four-year cycle the year following the Olympic Games).

Men's Information

USAGMEN'S QUALIFYING COMPETITION REQUIREMENTS July 27, 1995

Bid qualification requirements: The following requirements must be met in order for a meet host' s bid to be considered as a qualification competition for either USA Championships or Winter Cup Challenge.

1. Use NGJA accredited National or FIG rated judges with a minimum of two judges per event.

2. Involve a minimum of one National Apparatus Leader as ajudge in the competition.

3. Involve a minimum of four programs in the competition.

4. Use FIG scoring with approved Men's Program Committee Special Requirements. (For USA Championships qualifiers only.)

5. Be held the weekend of August 5-6, 1995 for U.S. National Championships or the first three weekends of Jan. for the Winter Cup Challenge. All competitions must have both a compulsory and an optional session conducted on separate days .

6. Use an official USAG registration form which will be a valid entry form for both the qualifying competition and the Championship meet.

N OTE: Entry forms must he fi lled out completely and contain a valid athlete and coaches USAG registration number. Please remember all athlete numbers expire on July 31 of each year.

7. Agree that all results, along with the completed entry forms, be express mailed to USA Gynmastics within 24 hours of the completion of the competition.

8. Must be a USA Gynmastics sanctioned event if hosting USA Championships qualifier.

9. Notification must be given to all participants of Winter Cup qualifiers that are non-sanctioned.

A written bid should include for review: 1. Competition director and site 2. List of programs w hich have indicated a w illingness to be involved in the competition 3. A tentative judges list 4. Cost of judges for the competition 5. Be returned to the USAG Men's Program Director a minimum of 60 days prior to the competition for consideration. (June 5, 1995/ November 1,1995) Bids will be awarded by the Men' s Program Committee based on m eeting the competition requirements and on regional need. A final judging list must be submitted a minimum of 14 days prior to the event for review by the MPC and USAG.

Schmid explained the Brevet I, II, III level progressions and distributed a summary of judging evaluations from last three years. Schmid also described the Olympic Games judge selection procedures.

FIG Report

The USA was invited to participate in the Gala at the World Championships in Vienna. This is a great honor for the USA athletes.

Schnud will present a full report of the new FIG direction at the Congress in New Orleans.

4.

USA Proposals for FIG Technical Meeting

Campbell stated that the USA has proposed to the FIG to eliminate restrictions on gold, silver and bronze materials. This w ill be voted on at the FIG technical meeting in Vienna.

5.

Judges Data

Campbell presented data regarding the number of national and international mee ts judged by national and brevet judges. The large number of judges with lugh ratings will, in the future, limit the number of m eets an y individual may be assigned.

6.

Judging Assignments

Judging assignments are made w ith regard to a geograpluc distribution, rating, and experience mix. Problems are developing when judges will only accep t the "big" assignments. With the growing number of high level judges, receiving an assignment is an honor.

7.

Code of Ethics/ Greivance Process

The rhythmic technical program will follow the procedures established by USA Gymnastics. These procedures w ill be finalized by Congress and will appear in the 1995 Rules and Policies.

8.

Format for review of routines

A second project of the RTC is to develop a system for routine review.

Nyem csik will make suggestions for a format of review of routines by judges, including group and ind ividual for Levels 9 & 10.

Campbell stated that this was the second meeting of the new Rhythmic Teclmical Committee. The RTC deals with the technical issues of the USA program and w ill be a working committee to assist athletes and coaches by helping to develop the technical/judging area of the sport.

Course instructor application

One project of the RTC is to establish a process for selecting judges' course instructors for levels 5, 6, 7 & 8. Massad w ill begin work in this area.

Post-meet sessions

Meet direc tors are strongly encouraged to plan and sch edule post-meet evaluation sessions. Post-meet evaluation sessions must be included in the meet information and in the judges contract. A technical evalua tion session may include video review, general points for improvement, or personal fee dback depending on the contract with the judges and the time allocated.

Separate fees are to be charged the participants for these sessions.

1996 Compulsory Group Program

The JOPC vo ted to adopt a new group program beginning January 1, 1996.

The current rules are in place for the 1995 J.O. Group championships.

Video education

Specific guidelines regarding cost and form at are necessary for a functional teclmical routine review sys tem. Video review is available to all rhythmic athletes.

Motion: The cost for a professional video evaluation service will be available at $50 per routine following the format to be developed by E. Nyemcsik. All video submissions must be non-competitive routines (not filmed at a competition). It will be the coach's responsibility to contract a judges of choice for the review.
