How Fast Are Your Gymnasts?

Reaction Time Important Consideration

eaction time represents an important consideration in an individual's performance in physical activity, not on ly in physical education and sports, but also in daily living. It may in many cases spe ll the difference between success and failure. The quickness of one 's reaction time in applying the brake pedal in an automobile may even mean the difference between life and death.

In the past decade, the sport of women 's gymnastics has experienced a phenomenal growth in the intensity, quantity, and quality of competition. This growth has been accompanied by a corresponding increase in th e number of gymnasts and at earlier ages than ever before. A combination of these factors make it increasingly important for gymnastics coaches to identify, recruit , and begin to develop gymnasts at the earliest age possible.

Gymnastics coaches often resort to less critical subjective visual observations to assess a gymnast's potential without the use of more accurate and objective determinants. Finding criterion measures which would be useful in identifying potentially successful gymnasts would be of great va lu e to coaches . Many experts and coaches believe successful gymnasts possess specific athletic traits that less competent gymnasts do not.

During the past quarter century, researchers have devoted much attention to the study of reaction time and its implication for quality of athletic performance. The degree to which reaction time differs between athletes and non-athletes has not been unequivocally established nor universally accepted .

Klafs reached the following conclusion concerning the reaction times of athletes versus non-athletes; " . . . one's ability to identify a stimulus and elicit the proper response in a minimal amount of time is an important factor in athletic success. It has been shown that athletes manifest a faster react ion time than do non-athletes " (Klafs, 1973). Olsen compared the reaction time of athletes and non-athletes in which he concluded the athletes had the fastest reaction times (Singer, 1968). Westerland and Tuttle measured the response time of athletes and found champions were superior in response time when compared with non-athlete groups (Westerland and Tuttle, 1931 ).

Conversely , Manolis took a homogeneous group of high school football players who were observed and evaluated on block effi ciencies which then was correlated with reaction time . Manolis conc lud ed there was no significant relationship between the two va riabl es (Manolis, 1955). While the re sults of these · studies are somewhat inconclusive, it is generally conceded reaction time influences athletic performanc e.

Method Subjects. The subjects of this study were 122 female gymnasts selected from high schools, colleges, and private schools from the Southwest area. The three ability levels considered (Class III, Beginner; Class II , Interm ediate; Cla ss I, Advanced as designated by th e classification of the United States Gymnastic Federation) were evenly distributed, with 38 Class I's, 41 Class II's, and 43 Class Ill's.

Due to the rigorous and often complex practice schedules of the subjects, the time of day for testing was varied to minimize the curtai lment of training time.

Procedure. Verba l instruct ions were given to each of the test groups prior to testing . Th e purposes, procedures, and mechanics of the test were explained to reduce any apprehensions associated with testing . Prior to testing , each subject received a review of test procedures and was allowed to hear and become familiar with the audible stimulus.

Each subject's name and age was recorded at the beginning of the test and their competitive c lassifications, all around scores and yea rs of gymnastic experience were record form data kept by the respective coaches.

A Dekan Timer was utilized to measure the time lapse in hundredths of second between the stimu lus and the response .

A pressure pedal was placed in the subjects hands, thumbs on top, fingers on bottom , which al lowed for minimal squeezing effort to initiate th e response. The instrument emitted a short buzzer sound as the audible stimulus.

Testing was done on an individual and private basis for the fo ll owing reasons: a) to increase concentration , b) avoid memori za tion of testing styles , c) to enhance relaxation , d) to decrease noise distractions, e) to avoid possible peer pressure.

Subjects were seated in a chair with the timing instrument situated directly behind them , eliminat ing the possibility of visual cues effecting the response to the audible stimulus.

A Pearson Product-Moment Correlation techniques was used to discern the relationship of reaction time with performance score, age experience, and classification . A simple Analysis of Variance was also applied to determine the differences among means for reaction time, age , and experience (utilizing the three levels of classificat ion as the group definitions). A Scheffe' mutiple comparison test was utilized when significant F Ratios emerged. The .01 level of confidence was established as the minimum required for the detection of a significant result.

The re lati onship of - .15 between reaction time and experience was inSignificant.

Other significant relationships that ex isted but which we re not directly related to this st udy were performa nce scores and experience (.39); performance sco res and classification (-.62); age and experience (.25); and expe rience with c lassificatio n (- .42).

The Analysis of Variance for the va riables of reaction time, age , and experience is rev iewed in Table II.

The analysis of Table II reveals a significant difference between Class means for reaction time, age, and experience.

The Scheffe' test identified for differences to be significa nt between Class I and Class II and between Class II and Class III for reaction time , age , and experience. The mean diffe rences between Class I and Class II were insignificant fo r each variable.

Discussion Statistical significance was achieved between the gymnasts ' reaction time and their al l around scores , age, and competitive c lassification ; however, these correlations should not be misinterpreted. With this study's sample size being of the magnitude that it is (N = 122) , significance is attained with very low corre lations. Perhaps a more pa lpa ble treatment of these data would be to square the significant Rs to ascertain the percent of common variance. With suc h low common variances between react ion time and all-a round scores (15 percent ), age (7 percent) and competitive classifi cati on (22 percent ), a coach would be hard pressed to use a gymnast's reaction time as the sole criterion for competency.

The intent of this study is not to imply if a gymnast does not react quickl y she wi ll neve r become a competent performer.

Furthermore , it is suspected the significant relationsh ips that emerged in this study are confounded by re lated thi rd va riabl es. Factors such as strength , flex ibility, endurance, coordination , special awareness and balance , to note a few , contribute to the gymnast's ability to perform. Perhaps future research could rank various criterion or specific combinat ions of criterion which are deemed pertinent to gymnastic success.

A Fonnula For Lighter Gymnasts

By Danny Scannell Head Coach Oak Ridge Gymnastics Club As gymnastic coaches have rea lized for a long time, the lighter a gymnast is the better he or she wi ll be in the sport. Yet, how do we reach the goal of a lighter gymnast?

The two main systems used now are dieting and calisthenics, with intensity increased until results are seen. Gymnasts using these systems get lighter, but there are also problems that accompany-such as anorexia , ove r training, and an inc rease in stress related injuries. We must therefore , reevaluate these systems.

When we are trying to lighten our gymnast we are attempting to reach the best strenght-to -we ight ratio, lean body mass to nonworking body mass. A weight lifter might simply add on to the muscle mass, but a gymnast has to pick everything up. It is better for the gymnast to reduce that body fat.

It has been' shown in many te xts , the more aerobic and exercise , th e more body fat is used as an energy source. If we are trying to reduce th e percentage of body fat , we should mix aerobic exercises into our highly anaerobic workouts. This would help to reduce the need for over dieting and calistenic exercising. Slow easy aerobic exercising , such as jogging , bike riding , or even wa lking , wi ll give the gymnast time to unwind. This allows the gymnast to reduce the fat of the body and friction of the brain.

To prove this I carried out a small test. It attempted to show the difference between the effect of anaerobic training versus aerobic. It was not meant to go into a sc ience journal , but it might show the advantage of putting some aerobic exercises into your training system.

Purpose To see wh ich type of exercise reduced percentage of body fat more over a four week training period. Running was selected to represent the aerobic exerc ise, while weight training the anaerob ic.

Testing Method The beginning data taken was: name, age, height, weight, and skinfolds. The sites at whic h the skinfolds we re taken were, tricets, subscapula, pectoraliS, iliac, anterior thigh . Each of the sites were checked three times or until the skinfold was consistently the same. The measuremen ts we re then placed int o a formula to calculate the percent b'ody fat. (The formula is back in reference ).

The subjects then carried out their training for four weeks. At the end of this time they were tested again , using the same procedure as stated above.

The subjects were asked to try and keep diet and daily activities (other than the training ) consistent with what they had done before their training had started.

Training System #1 Th e individual did light stretching three-to-fou r times a week , ran six-to-eight miles a week , usually brea king into three runs a week, each being two-to-two and one half miles long.

Training System #2 The individuals here worked out two-to-three times a week, for approximate ly 90 minutes to two hours. Th ey did a 20 minute wa rm up and then a circuit of 10 stations bench , squats, powe r squats, cu rls , military press , leg lifts and curls , bench press while in neck bridge , neck (resistance ), two fre e weig ht life stat ions.

Validity and Reliability The testing method of using skinfolds in calculating percentage of body fat is an establ ished testing method , one found to be va lid and of high reliability.

However the numbers being dealt wi th are ve ry small and the chance of poor valid ity and reliabili ty is very great. I feel the point being made by the results is ve ry important. I hope to red o the test at a later date under more contr olled circumstances. Th is wo uld allow a check for objectivity and to standardize the test.

Some problem areas of the test I wo uld correct are: 1. Be sure the diet and all other activities are the same for all su bjects.

2. A sta ndardized method of measuring work output needs to be found and used, to be sure all subjects are doing the same work load.

3. To ha ve subjects be more homogeneous, and equal number in each group, add a control group.

Although the results of th e test are a little we ak , th ey do show an important modifier of body composition. Hopefully pe ople will consider these results when putti ng togeth er their training program , if attaining optimum strength to weig ht rati o is one of their goals.

Th e members discussed the relationship and representation of TWI, a negotiating agent for the USGF. The members requested that Mr. M. Jacki give TWI an ultimatum of 72 hours to negotiate a TV contract for the World Championships Tri als. Otherwise the USGF shall seek other representation for the event.

Proposed by Mrs. Ammerman to correct th e Rh ythm ic Gymnastics Committee minutes to reflect the qualifying procedure for the World Championship Team to be 50% score from the National Championships and 50% from the National Sports Festival and the therefore approve the minutes as corrected.

Mr. S. Sanders presen ted a proposal and bid to host th e 1984 Olympic Trials for Men and Women in Jackson ville. The proposal included the complete package requested by the USGF including transportation , housing, financial support, advertizing , promotion , etc.

The bid also included that the USGF shall receive 100% of the profits of the event.

Zero Vault Reviewed; Rule Retained MINUTES JUNIOR BOARD 1983 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS MEETING EUGENE, OREGON

The meeting was called to order by Chairman Robert Cowan at 7:30 a.m. but a 15 minute rece ss was called due to a change in the meeting room to allow everyone to find the location .

Working from a prepared agenda the items were discussed and voted on in numerical order.

Each of the Regional Directors reported on progress and activities in their respective Region s. Various formats are used in each Region to determine and administrate the Regional meet to be effective financially and fun for the gymnasts. All of the Regions continue to experience growth.

Present at the 7:45 roll call: Region I- Rich Boccia (replacing Hal Frey) Region II - Hideo Micoguchi Region VI-Dave March (proxy) Region III-Robert Cowan Region VII-Larry Moyer Region IV-Stan Atkinson Region VIII-Gene Watson Region V-Ray Gura Region IX-Pat Shane also present were Tom Gardner, Yoichi Tomita , Dr. Bob McKelvain, George Beckstead , Ed Burch and Mr. Mas Watanabe. Other interested persons came and went with no voice and no vote.

Each of the standing committees made a report on any work completed in the past 8 months. The Publications committee under Pat Shane will begin updating the Rules and Policies book immediately with distribution slated for Congress. The Awards committee chairman, Robert Cowan, reported that meda ls from Medallic Arts will cost the same next season. The Compulsory committee under the direction of Chairman Ed Burch has begun formulating the compu lsory for the next quadrennium, 1985-88. Input from the coaches is desired. Ray Gura gave a ve ry detailed report on the result s of the testing and a very positive attitude seems to be the concensus.

The next item of business was proposed Rule cha nges. The zero vault was reviewed once again and it was decided to retain the rule.

The Class II qualifying score was raised to 95. Th e Class I qualifying score was left at 95. Th e Jr. Elite qualifying score was lowered to 102.

Scores to State and Regional are set at the appropriate level. Thi s action was taken in lieu of a very limiting format with limited numbers from each Region with additional at large positions based on score.

The Reg ional Director form at for election was re viewe d by Robert Cowan in order that a uniform manner of election without possibility of lack of credibi lity is ensured.

A reminder that the Frank Cumiskey award for 1984 will be voted on at the Congress and the possibility of recognizing more coaches or other deserving persons than the cu rrent procedure allows.

The next items of discussion we re the formation of a Technical newsletter which would offset the loss of the USGF Technical Bulletin wh ich appeared to be defunct. Also, the newsletter would be written in a non-scientific jargon for easier assimilation by coaches with a nontechnical background. Mr. Mas Watanabe will be the technical ed itor.

Dr. Bob McKelvain who is the Sports Psychology liason to the Junior program will edit the Sports Sciences area. Robert Cowan will cover all Junior Program items. Dr. McKelvain wil l coordinate the newsletter for the first three issues. The newsletter wi ll be published every two months.

The next item was the formation of a compulsory committee for the next quadrennium. Jon Culbertson will be the liaison from the NGJA and Ed Burch will chair the committee. A Class V program will be added and compu lsory for Class V, IV and III will be written in the near future . Core elements for Class IJ and I will be determined as soon as the new Olympic compulsory parts become available. Distribution is hoped by June.

It was discussed and voted to have each state meet conducted by the first weekend In May. The Regional meet must be conducted by the fourth weekend In May. This will allow for an earlier Nat/onals If necessary and the Nat/onal Meet Director more lead time.

The next item of business was a raport by Dr. McKelvain on the newly formed Sports Psychology I Sciences Committee for the Junior Program . Most of th e work done in the past has been at the Senior leve l. Dr. McKelvain has recruited a group of vol unteers who will be able to provide data on the psychological implications of gymnastics as well as the physiological for jun ior age boys.

Under new business, Larry Moyer had requested that agenda time be devoted to the discussion of a Junior Boys budget and other items.

Mr. Watanabe spoke on the Budget situation and informed the Board that it had been submitted to Mike Jacki and he felt ve ry good about its implementation Also at this time, it was pOinted out that Mike Jacki had given approval to the spending of monies to provide regional representation of judges at the National Championships. Thi s was due primarily to the exhausting work of Hideo Mizoguchi and George Beckstead. Working closely together they put together the best travel and lodging package possible for the judges. George was instrumental in commun ication and selecting the judges on their experience and knowledge in the junior program. The results were outstanding and both men are to be commended.

Other new business items were concerned with having the USGF pay the Regional Directors way to Congress as this is a required meeting and is an imposi tion for some club owners and directors . Another item was discussion of limiting the season for competition . It was discussed and voted to have each state meet conducted by the first weekend in May. The Regional meet must be conducted by the 4th weekend in May. This wil l allow for an earlier Nationals if necessary and the National Meet Director more lead time. The cooperation of the coaches and some of the Regional Directors is appalling in regard to National entrys and the protocol involved.

Th e Regional Clinics will be held th e weekends of Nov 11-12 or No v 18-19.

The Junior Coaching staff along with Mr. Watanabe wi ll conduct the nine Regional clinics.

Additionally, Mr. Watanabe has scheduled and received preliminary approval for the conduction of thre e Regional Development clinics at the United States Olympic Training Center for November and December of 1984. Tentative plans call for the selection by the Regional Director of ten (10) gymnasts to travel at their own expense to the Springs for a week long camp. Three regions would attend at a time. The Regional Director would have to schedule with Mr. Watanabe when th ey could come. Once the athletes arrive everything is provided free of charge . The dates are Nov 17 -24 , Nov 24-Dec. 1, and Dec 1-8.

The last item of business was the selection of the 1985 meet site.

One bid has been submitted and the selection will be made at Cong ress. Mike Willson and Denni s Mcintire have bid for Ohio State University.

Colorado Springs Training Camp Th e date for the training camp is July 3-17, 1983.

International Meet An invitation to an international meet in Israel (June 16-1 9, 1983) includes 3 gymnasts, 1 coach , 1 judge, and 1 pianist. This meet is not covered by USGF; persons who qualify and are interested in partiCipating must find their own sponsor(s) for this meet.

Stacy Oversier was a member of the 1983 Group Team that competed in France for the World Championships. She was also a member of the delegation that competed In the prestigious Wacoallnternationallnvltational. During the 1983 USGF Rhythmic Internalionallnvitational in Orange, California, Oversier performed as an Individual competitor.

In response to our last committee request , th e USGF Executive Comm. and Board of Directors approved our request to have the Olympic Coach , Alia Svirskiy, receive the same remuneration as the artistic gymnastic coaches. $5,000 is the yea rly monetary sum granted.

The Athlete 's Association approved having a rhythmic gymnastic representative on their committee. The National Team wi ll elect its representative . Becky Riti will follow-up on the procedure for this selection.

International Invitational , Los Angeles, Aug. 26-27, 1983 Thirt een nations have been invited. To date, four countries have accepted (B ulgaria, Canada, Holl and, and Japan.) Th e U.S. wi ll have 2 teams of 3 plus 1 alternate in each team.

Gymnasts:

The first 8 ranked competitors from the National Championships and th e Sports Festi va l wi ll comprise the teams.

Ten judges needed. When a final count of the number of acceptances is made, judges from the US will be selected from the following-Andrea Schmid, Norma Zabka, Ellen Nyemcsik, Annelis Hoyman, Helena Greenhouse, Candace Feinberg, Barbara Fester. Lin e judges will be appointed from ce rtifi ed judges who are present.

Japanese Invitational Tournament-Sept. 10-25, 1983 All expenses for this meet will be borne by the Japanese Federation.

Rhythmic Cup-Brazil (last week in July) To ensure fina ncial support for our World Championship team, the International Program Comm. recomm ends not accepting thi s invitation.

Four Continents Championship Indianapolis has been approved as the site of this meet by th e USGF and the Indianapolis Sport Corporation. Date to be confirmed with FIG. Coaches and Judges Course After discussion, it was decided that the date for this course should be changed from after the 1984 Four Continents to after the Olympic Games. IOC Sol-darity Funds are to be sought through our Olympic Committee to fund this event. In addition , we must make a request that this wi ll be a Continental Judges ' Course. Approval for this must come from FIG .

General Discussion followed regarding the pros and cons of inviting a Korean citizen residing in Los Angeles. To make a final deCision, the following must be done: Alia Svirskiy to send co rrespondence to Becky Riti 2. Becky Riti to check M. Jacki if funds are a problem 3. Becky Riti to check USGF off ice re precedence for this sort of thing In connection wi th the use of judges at the International Invitational, only the US will have more than one judge. One of the purposes of this meet is to provide as much experi ence for our US gymnasts and officials as possible.

Next meeting of International Program Comm. to be held Aug. 23, which is just prior to the International Invitational in Los Angeles.
