IN SUPPORT OF THE USA EAST PROVINCE JESUITS

The Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam Award honors those who selflessly give of themselves for the Greater Glory of God. Ignatius continually spoke of the magis — always doing more!

The Jesuits of the USA East Province are privileged to honor

JACK AND EILEEN CONNORS

with this esteemed award.

We thank you for creating a hope-filled future for the inner-city youth of Boston and beyond.

{

John M. (Jack) Connors, Jr., Boston College ’63, and his wife, Eileen M. Ahearn Connors, Boston College, ’66, MSW ’95, are Eagles through and through.

Jack is founding partner and chairman emeritus of Hill Holliday, one of the largest communications agencies in the United States. His leadership roles at Boston College span five decades, and he remains the Board of Trustees’ longest-serving member, most recently as its chairman for two terms. Jack is well known in Boston philanthropic life, serving on many boards and leading civic campaigns. Closest to his heart is the founding of Camp Harbor View. When the late Mayor Thomas Menino asked for his help in identifying a safe and enjoyable alternative for inner-city boys and girls during the summer, Jack raised the funds to build Camp Harbor View on Boston Harbor’s Long Island. Today, Camp Harbor View helps more than a thousand Boston teens and their families with year-round programs that inspire creativity, build community, and champion young leaders.

Eileen has served in social work and counseling throughout the more disadvantaged areas of Boston and has been a foster care and adoption advisor in the community. She is the former coordinator of the Women’s Resource Committee for the Boston College Alumni Association and served as a co-chair of the advisory board

at Boston College’s Graduate School of Social Work, as well as on the board of The Children’s Trust. Eileen was honored in 2017 for her work with inner-city youth at the Greater YMCA of Boston. The Sisters of St. Joseph’s also recognized Eileen for her continued outreach and for the “manner in which she does ordinary things in extraordinary ways.” Eileen’s work has helped establish many progressive and impactful new parent and student focused programs at Boston College, throughout Catholic schools of the Archdiocese, and at the Greater YMCA of Boston. In 2022, Eileen worked alongside the Gavin Foundation to open the first recovery center in Boston dedicated strictly to women. This 30-bed facility called “Eileen’s House” consists of women-focused services to support their recovery and prepare them to successfully re-enter society.

Jack and Eileen have four married children and 13 grandchildren. They know how important it is to raise healthy, happy children with a village of support.

Together, Jack and Eileen have broadened the landscape of community-based philanthropy in Boston, enhancing the lives of many and providing a hope-filled future for us all. It is for these and many other examples of service, that the USA East Province of the Society of Jesus presents to Jack and Eileen Connors the Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam Award, for the Greater Glory of God.

JESUIT GALA 2024 ~ 1

Dear Friends,

Once again, it is my distinct privilege to welcome you to the 2024 Jesuit GALA. It is an occasion when family and friends, alumni and colleagues in mission gather to celebrate the Jesuits and support our diverse ministries.

This year we have chosen to honor Jack and Eileen Connors. To accompany young people in creating a hope-filled future is one of the USA East Jesuits’ guiding principles. It has also been the reality of Jack and Eileen Connors for decades, with their selfless work with inner-city Boston youth. We are honored to celebrate this journey with you that has a place for everyone.

On behalf of all the Jesuits of the USA East Province, I am delighted to extend our heartfelt gratitude to David and Maureen O'Connor, Susan Martinelli Shea, and Stephen Skinner, who have chaired this evening’s celebration. They have participated in numerous conference calls graciously and generously; they have made countless phone calls asking for your generosity.

As we have said so many times, your gifts better enable us to:

• educate and inspire our men in formation;

• care for our senior and infirm Jesuits;

• support Jesuit missionaries around the world; and

• assist Jesuits in their ministries.

As we enjoy the evening and renew acquaintances with friends old and new, please be assured of the love and prayers of the Jesuits. You have a special place in our hearts, in our Masses and in our prayers. God bless you!

Sincerely and gratefully,

JESUIT GALA 2024 ~ 2

AND GRATITUDE TO OUR SPECIAL GUEST HOST

Brendan Gottschall, SJ, is a Jesuit scholastic of t he USA East Province, a transitional deacon, and a student at the BC Clough School of Theology and Ministry. Brendan will be ordained a priest on June 8, 2024, at the Fordham University Church in the Bronx, after which he will serve as the Assistant Director and Promoter of Vocations for the Province. Originally from South Jersey, Brendan entered the Society of Jesus in 2014 and professed first vows in 2016. He has attended Catholic schools for most of his life including an Augustinian preparatory school and Georgetown University, where he met the Jesuits. It was in these schools that Brendan encountered the vowed religious, first Franciscan religious sisters, then Augustinians and Jesuits, all of whom inspired his vocation.

After graduating from Georgetown with a bachelors in economics, with minors in government and Chinese, Brendan worked for two years in economic consulting before entering the Jesuits. During the novitiate, he taught for a semester at Cheverus High School in Portland, ME. His first mission after vows was to study philosophy at Fordham University. Brendan began his regency in Beijing, China, where he worked for almost a year at the Beijing Center for Chinese Studies. He then taught middle and high school classics, theology, and economics at Loyola Blakefield in Baltimore for two years. For the last three years, Brendan has been working on two degrees: Masters of Divinity and Licentiate in Sacred Theology at the CSTM, where he has had a graced experience of the Church in the community of women and men who study, teach, and work there.

and FORMATION

Nurturing vocations and providing powerful formation programs for Jesuits are two of the highest priorities of the USA East Province. Modern-day Jesuit formation presents novices, brothers and scholastics with a national – and often global – experience of Ignatius’ mission of going everywhere in the world to find Christ by working with and learning from the poor.

Originally envisioned by St. Ignatius, Jesuit formation takes between nine to twelve years to complete and costs over $500,000 per Jesuit. A key focal point of this process continues to be the Spiritual Exercises, the 30-day retreat that helps Jesuits to see Christ more clearly, to love him more deeply and to follow him more closely.

Education

Education has been a cornerstone of the Society of Jesus since 1548, when the first Jesuit school opened in Messina, Sicily. Today, more than 3,700 schools carry on this tradition around the world, including more than 40 in the USA East Province. Many of these schools were founded so that students in lower-income neighborhoods can receive a free or more affordable Jesuit education. One distinction of Jesuit education at all levels is the emphasis on – caring for the whole person in mind, body and spirit.

JESUITS

In the USA East Province, senior and infirm priests and brothers reside at one of four healthcare centers: Campion Health Center, in Weston, MA., Colombiere Jesuit Community in Baltimore, MD, Manresa Hall in Philadelphia, PA, and Murray-Weigel Hall, in the Bronx, N.Y. These centers offer skilled nursing and assisted living programs, as well as spiritual direction and counseling provided by brother Jesuits, staff members and visitors. The province provides crucial funding for the compassionate care that these men need – expenses that are supported by province benefactors. Jesuits spend their lives adapting to change and serving the world in many ways. While living in our health care communities, some continue to work in parishes and schools. All actively serve in the ministry of praying for the Church and the Society.

THE USA EAST PROVINCE

Among their many ministries, Jesuit priests and brothers serve the faithful in parish communities. Jesuits also serve as chaplains in hospitals, prisons and the military, helping all to grow in their faith as companions of Jesus. Jesuit parishes are Eucharist-centered, spirit-filled places where people choose to form parish community and to experience spiritual growth through life-giving liturgies in a worship space of beauty and reverence. The long history of spiritual leadership from the Society of Jesus challenges these parishes with the Gospel values of love, compassion and social justice. Ministries

and SOCIAL MINISTRIES

Jesuits believe that retreats and spiritual direction are key ways to strengthen one’s relationship with God. The Society of Jesus and our partners at parishes, social ministries and apostolates offer a wide range of spiritual renewal programs centered on Ignatian spirituality.

The Office of Ignatian Spirituality (OIS) is an office of the USA East Province of the Society of Jesus committed to partnering with people and ministries to promote Ignatian spirituality for mission. Their ministry operates from Maine to Georgia offering opportunities to experience the graces of the Spiritual

Exercises, to gather Ignatian spiritual directors and practitioners, and to bring together seekers looking to find God through the wisdom of St. Ignatius Loyola.

ALL FOR THE GREATER GLORY OF GOD

PRAYER OF ST. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA

Lord Jesus, teach me to be generous.

Teach me to serve as you deserve,

To give and not to count the cost,

To fight and not to heed the wounds,

To labor and not to seek to rest,

To give of my self and not ask for a reward,

Except the reward of knowing that I am doing your will.
