From the Offices of USA Baseball As the USABat standard enters its second year, we are proud of the strides that youth baseball has made around the United States. Additionally, we are excited for what’s to come and remain dedicated to the continued growth and prosperity of our sport. With participation in youth baseball on the rise, along with the development of new technologies, ensuring the long-term integrity of our game remains as important as ever. USA Baseball and our national member organizations are committed to the development and success of youth athletes, the integrity of amateur baseball and the equipment that supports it.

The USABat standard was adopted across the United States on January 1, 2018, with the goal of establishing a wood-like performance standard for youth baseball bats. Following a successful first year driven by over two million youth participants using over 300 approved bats from 10 unique brands, we look to the future with great optimism.

USA Baseball is proud to announce the 2019 USABat lineup as a part of our inaugural USABat guide. Parents, players and coaches will find detailed information on newly-certified bats and the companies that produce them in the pages that follow. We are also proud to support a joint campaign with our national member organizations titled “Tampering Is Cheating,” designed to address and eliminate illegal bat tampering in amateur baseball.

As youth baseball equipment falls into line with the sport’s historic wood bat standard, as well as the wood-like BBCOR standard used at the high school and collegiate levels, we thank the many youth participants, parents, coaches and administrators who continue to drive our pastime forward. USABat Program Enters Year Two

By Greg Bouris The USABat program had a great rookie season, and the USA Baseball-led initiative created to standardize the production and performance of youth baseball bats anticipates even greater progress in 2019.

First, after spending nearly four years developing the USABat standards and protocols, the program was adopted by youth leagues affiliated with USA Baseball’s national member organizations (NMOs) during its official roll-out during the 2018 season.

The USABat program is overseen by USA Baseball, with the support of a number of its NMOs, including American Amateur Baseball Congress, Babe Ruth Baseball/Cal Ripken Baseball, Dixie Youth Baseball, Little League Baseball and PONY Baseball.

By standardizing the properties of non-wood youth bats so that they perform like their wooden counterparts, USABat is providing an even playing field for all competitors participating in programs run by national member organizations participating in the USABat program,” said USABat Director, Russell Hartford. “The USABat program seeks to ensure the integrity of youth baseball. Given the similarities between USABat and BBCOR, we also believe the standard will make the game more uniform from the youth level all the way through high school, college, and professional divisions. Players will find that USABats perform like wood bats without sacrificing weight, balance, or durability. They will also find that bat performance remains consistent as they move from the youth level onto more advanced divisions of play in high school, college and beyond.

Working closely with the above-mentioned youth baseball organizations, leaders from the scientific and engineering communities, as well as the baseball bat manufacturers, the USABat program has successfully introduced a new generation of youth baseball players to bats that mimic the properties of wooden bats.

The goals of the USABat program include creating an even playing field for all young players in USA Baseball’s participating leagues, getting these players familiar with using bats that play like wood and ensuring integrity in the sport’s developmental system.

encourage the use of wood-like bats. This similarity and continuity should help young players advance from one level to the next, right through their collegiate years.

Among USABat’s biggest proponents is Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr.. Earlier in the season, the former Orioles All-Star and one of the sport’s most revered players, told the Baltimore Sun that he supports efforts to make youth bats act more like wood.

In the end, most people involved in baseball at the grassroots level agree that the new USABat standard could help increase participation in the sport, while also encouraging young players to stick with the game longer. As we all know, baseball is a game of failure and that failure can lead some kids to give up on the sport too soon. The new bat regulations and bigger bat barrels could lead to more contact at the plate, which keeps the sport fun for those trying to master one of the most difficult things to do in sports – hit a small round ball with a rounded object.

Bats designed to perform like wood will help players develop a truer sense of how wood bats perform. As he told the Sun, with wood bats, “you don’t get rewarded” for hitting the ball off the label or handle. Learning to hit the ball in the sweet-spot of the bat at an early age makes you a better hitter and prepares developing players for the day they may be required to use only wooden bats.

All the top youth baseball bat manufacturers have backed the program, including Anderson, Axe, DeMarini, Dirty South Bats, Easton, Franklin Sports, Louisville Slugger, Mizuno and Rawlings. These companies, and others, must produce a sample of each bat it intends to have certified under the USABat program.

The bat samples are then submitted to the Washington State University Sports Science Lab for performance testing. If a sample

is utilized in the production of bats is used by professionals. That’s why the USABat program strives to deliver young players the best of both worlds – bats that are light, easier to swing, and more cost-effective in the long-run.

At this point, one might ask why not just use wood bats. Well, one-piece wood bats are USABat approved and permitted for use in competition. However, wood is heavy, it breaks and it’s scarce, and all the best wood

These changes brought about through the USABat program are expected to provide players with a fair and even opportunity to advance through the sport at every level. And, at the end of the day, that’s all that an athlete wants…a fair and equitable chance to demonstrate his or her skills. As one progresses up the ranks in a system forged on meritocracy, baseball’s integrity will be maintained by ensuring all participants receive the same opportunity to demonstrate their skills.
