Join us June 22 as we focus on “Love in Action”

Make your plans now to join us for Associates and Sisters Day on June 22, 2019, a day that will focus on “Love in Action.”

Father Joe Merkt, a priest of the Archdiocese of Louisville and an Associate of the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville, returns this June to discuss the ministerial component of his four-part retreat day Father Joe titled “Exploring Personal Growth in the Spirit of Saint Angela Merici.”

“In their role as evangelizers, (Ursuline Associates) operate in a ministerial setting which has various dimensions – faith formation, worship, cultural diversity, community life, social justice and apostolic service,” Father Joe says in his retreat. The overall theme will focus on how Ursuline Associates minister in their communities, even when they may not see it as ministry. It’s what Ursuline Sister Pam Mueller dubbed as “Love in Action.”

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Angela Room of the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center. Introductions begin at 9, followed by the opening prayer. Father Joe will lead the discussion in the morning, and then following lunch, our newest class of Associates will make their commitment in the Motherhouse Chapel. There are five people in formation now.

At 2 p.m., the always popular associate panel discussion will focus on “How does your daily life call you to act with love?” This year’s panelists include Becky Pedley of Owensboro; Deacon Victor Fromm of Murray, Ky.; Nettie Foley from the Kansas City area; Jody Ziegler from Grayson County, Ky.; and Tina Wolken from Owensboro.

Following the panelists, Sister Larraine Lauter will discuss her ministry, Water With Blessings.

Dear Associate Sisters and Brothers, I have truly enjoyed these past few months! Everyone has been so welcoming, and I have met so many WONDERFUL new people.

I am excited to announce that I will be speaking, along with Sister Donna Frey, OSU, about our two groups of young girls, Young Daughters of Saint Angela (YDOSA) and Young Associates of Saint Angela (YASA), at this year’s Ursuline Convocation July 25-28 in St. Louis. Sister Marie William...Spiritual guide and stand-up comedian

hile attending a summer workshop with another religious community that had associates, Sister Marie William Blyth saw the need for an associate program for her Ursuline community in Paola, Kan. She presented the idea to leadership in 1980 and served on the development Sister Marie William Blyth, left, and Associate Carol O’Keefe committee. Parish in Overland Park, Kan. The parishioners there loved her and, over the next 11 years, Sister gained many titles. Some knew her as the “stand-up comedian” who could tell one joke after another. Once, Sister was even carted off stage on a dolly after getting “the hook.” She was also quite a promoter. She loved Jerry Viviano’s annual variety shows and for many years volunteered to sell tickets. She would say, “I have 40 tickets to sell. How many do you want? I can get more if you want them all.” Some referred to Sister as the “Pied Piper of Associates” because of the number of Holy Cross parishioners she had introduced to the Ursuline community.

Sister Marie William moved to Queen of The Holy Rosary – Wea parish in Bucyrus, Kan., in 1995. Her reputation followed her as she continued sharing jokes and making herself available to those seeking more spiritual fulfillment. I happened to have been one of those people. In 1998 I became the parish secretary at QHRWea. Sister and I had numerous spiritual discussions and, as with so many others, she was always available and gave amazing guidance.

Sister told me about the Associates, and I attended my first retreat. During those three short days I prayed, shared, walked, ate and socialized with some of the nicest, most interesting people I had ever met. It was a very sacred time in a sacred place, and it was life changing. I began my journey with Saint Angela in 1999 with Sister Marie William at my side every step of the way.

Sister was an excellent organizer who paid close attention to every detail for meetings and events. In 2005, she became the coordinator of the Paola Associates with over 125 members. Sister would often say, “The Associates are an enthusiastic group, and I feel their enthusiasm. It makes me want to do more if I can.” She made each of us feel like we were her best friend.

Joanne Thompson recalls how Sister would personally call each associate to invite him or her to the semiannual retreats. It was common to have 75 to 100 attend, partly because no one could say no to Sister. She kept each event new and fresh with just the right balance, starting with a creative ice breaker and of course, a joke.

The Kansas City Associates meet every other month for ongoing formation and the three “Bonded Groups” try to meet regularly as well. Thank you, Sister Marie William, as you continue to lead and guide us in the charism of Saint Angela Merici.n

Ed Cecil retired three times, still helping

d Cecil was the oldest of five children born to Joseph Willard Cecil and Mary Jessie Boone. He’s a Louisville native who was raised in New Haven, Ky. His mother went to Mass every day she could, and the family recited the rosary every night.

When Ed was 5, he started first grade. The Ursuline Sisters immediately took him under their wing – or “adopted” him, as he puts it. He’s been tied to the Ursulines ever since. So firmly involved were they in his life, that Sister Lennora Carrico and Sister Mary Leon Riney shaped his choice of higher education. He jokes that the sisters connived to steer him to select Brescia by telling him the Owensboro girls were prettier than ones who attended his first choice of college, Bellarmine. “You see how they work,” he said. “It is like the Mafia. Once in, no getting out.”

The sisters’ tip must have been true because at Brescia Ed met and wed Gloria Janiak. He’s proud of their children – Sara, Ruth, Aaron and Rachel. Each of them chose professions that led them away from home. Still, Ed says, they remember where they come from. August 2019 marks 50 years of marriage for the Cecil couple.

Ed finds his greatest joy in the Catholic faith handed down to him by his ancestors. They fled from England to Maryland, and then on to Kentucky.

They settled in the Bluegrass area known as the “Kentucky Holy land” near the Trappist monastery at Gethsemane. Both his grandfathers walked to Mass at the monastery every morning at 4 a.m. Ed didn’t realize the “Father Louis” he often spoke with was Thomas Merton until he reached his junior year of high school. When Ed’s class attended a two-day retreat, he received a copy of “The Seven Storey Mountain,” Merton’s autobiography.

His Ursuline bond grew deeper when Sister Rose Marita O’Bryan invited him and Gloria to be Ursuline Associates.

He saw how Saint Angela Merici’s framework of prayer, volunteering and good stewardship tied in with Ed Cecil and his wife, Gloria, the way he lived his faith. Ed appreciates helping at a Mount Saint Joseph Picnic Saint Angela Merici’s whole person approach to community work – body, mind and spirit. Sister Barbara Jean Head is his contact sister.

Ed likes to say he has retired three times. First from the Green River District Health Department after 35 years; then from the Kentucky Department of Health after eight years; and from the U.S. Army following 30 years of service, both active and reserve.

Although he says he doesn’t do as much volunteer work as in the past, Ed serves as Eucharistic minister at St. Stephen Parish, where he’s also on the finance council. At Mount Saint Joseph, he’s on the Associate Advisory Board and the Advisory Board for the Conference and Retreat Center.

Ed’s credo is the Golden Rule. His mother taught this early on, and he’s done his best to live his life in fulfillment of Jesus’ example. If he could change one thing about the world today, he’d teach each person to honor and care about his neighbor.

In the end, he says, he wants people to remember him as “a simple man who tried his best, loving his church and his family.”

Are you an Easter person?

Someone, unknown to me, told us that we are an Easter people and alleluia is our song. I pose these questions: • What does alleluia mean? According to Merriam-Webster it is a Hebrew word meaning praise the Lord.

• Who are Easter people? I believe they are people who are confident that Jesus rose from the dead to give us all new life. Easter usually occurs in the spring when we see signs of new life all around us in nature – flowers blooming, trees budding, the grass greening.

• How do we show new life? We show new life by doing the things Jesus did – reaching out and touching those in need of healing, in whatever manner they need. We show new life by welcoming the stranger, the immigrant, the downtrodden and all those who live on the edge of society. We show new life by listening to the lonely and those who have no one to care for them.

All of God’s children are our brothers and sisters. We are called to set aside our differences and reflect God’s love for all of us.

Reflection: Do I believe that I am among the Easter people?

How do I set aside my differences to show God’s love for everyone?

“ What is Development? ” When people hear the word “fundraising,” there is usually a negative reaction followed by a comment about not liking to ask people for money. The words “fundraising” and “development” are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference between the two.

Often people give to a cause out of an emotional reaction to a crisis such as a natural disaster or a death and they want to do something NOW to alleviate the suffering – that is fundraising.

Fundraising is transactional and short-term or one time for a specific purpose.

Development is much more than just asking people for money. It is about building relationships with people and connecting people with something they value. Development is really taking the long view to sustain the mission and ministry.

Father Henri Nouwen wrote about the spirituality of giving. He described giving as a way to make God’s kingdom come about and offer people the opportunity to participate in our mission. When people see giving as more than just writing a check, they become richer in the process.

Earlier this year we surveyed our donors to learn more about what they care about. We received some very touching stories about the profound impact the Ursuline Sisters made on their lives. The sisters have touched thousands of lives as teachers, serving in parish ministries and serving the poor.

We are so grateful for our donors who show their gratitude by giving to support the sisters and to make it possible for their ministry to live on.

Dear Associates, Happy Easter! It is during this time of year that we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.

Our other celebration is the rebirth of the beauty of nature that is everywhere on the Mount campus.

The weeping cherries on the front campus and the Japanese cherries around the corner at Cummings Road are just beautiful. To top it all off, a recent sunset was glorious with its pinks, purples and blues.

When we see this beauty, we can only thank God for the goodness and beauty that is shared with us each day. Even more than that, we have the beauty and goodness of so many people who pray for us, support us and care about us. We are grateful for each one of you.

We hope that all of you will be able to come this summer to be with us for Associates and Sisters Day in June. The program will be good, and the company will be great.

In Loving Memory...

SISTER MARIE WILLIAM BLYTH, 89, died March 10, at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 69th year of religious life. She was a native of Denver. Sister Marie William was an Ursuline of Paola, Kan., until the merger of that community with Mount Saint Joseph in 2008. She loved teaching and helping adults to grow deeper in their faith. She was never without a joke in hopes of lightening someone’s day. Sister Marie William was a teacher and principal in Kansas and Oklahoma from 1952-1983. She then turned to parish ministry in Kansas from 1984-2005. From 2000 until moving to Maple Mount in 2009, she ministered to Ursuline Associates, which she continued to do in Kentucky. She was the contact sister for Associates Debra Dugger, Owensboro; Lawrence and Lisa Guenther and Denise Heying, all of Stilwell, Kan.; Victor and Linda Monaco, Kansas City, Mo.; Doris Rommelfanger, Greeley, Kan., and Mariita Rodriguez, Shawnee, Kan. Survivors include the members of her religious community, nieces and nephews. The funeral Mass was March 14, with burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.

SISTER CELINE LEEKER, 89, died March 25, at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 70th year of religious life. She was a native of Olathe, Kan. Sister Celine was previously an Ursuline Sister of Paola. She had an ever-present radiant smile and loved to welcome people and make them feel at home. She was an educator for 41 years in Kansas and Oklahoma. From 197579, Sister Celine was formation director for the Ursuline Sisters of Paola. She was the contact sister for Associate Paula Graves of Springtown, Texas. Survivors include the members of her religious community; four siblings, Margaret (Jim) Hutchinson and Agnes (Don) Phelps, both of Overland Park, Kan.; Catherine Leeker of Shawnee, Kan., Rose Leeker of Gardner, Kan., and John Leeker, of Wichita, Kan; nieces and nephews. The funeral Mass was March 28 with burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.

PAMELA “PENNY” COOPER BURNS, 75, of Prospect, Ky., died Feb. 16. Penny was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Louisville, the Columbia Ladies, and she volunteered with Water With Blessings. She retired from General Electric in Louisville. She became an Ursuline Associate in 2005. Her contact sister was Sister Emma Anne Munsterman. Penny is survived by her husband, Tommy Burns; niece, Kristina Buckler (Philip); nephew, Chip; great nieces and nephews, Daniel, Alicia, Andrew, Amanda, Alex, Xavier, Alexis and Dawson. Her memorial service was in March.
