VOL. XVIII, NO. 4

Speakers to discuss Spirituality of Work on June 8 hen Father Anthony Shonis became a pastor for the first time at age 55 after a lifetime as a teacher, he wasn’t sure what a pastor did. So 13 years ago he began an activity to visit his parishioners in their workplace. “This has been a wonderfully enlightening experience for me,” he said. “When people come to Mass they come from somewhere; namely, their home and their workplace. For me this is the beginning of the Sunday/Monday connection. After all, outside of their family, where do most people spend their time? At work. And isn’t this where they meet the people whose values are often most different from theirs?” Father Shonis, an Ursuline Associate and former chaplain at Mount Saint Joseph, will be one of the speakers at Associates and Sisters Day on June 8, discussing “The Spirituality of Work.” He is now the parochial vicar at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Henderson, Ky. The other speaker that morning will be Ursuline Sister Amelia Stenger, who quoted her father, John Stenger, as saying, “If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.” “He may have heard this somewhere else but that is what the spirituality of work really means,” Sister Amelia said. “Kahlil Gibran says it this way: ‘Work is love made visible.’” Sister Amelia is the director of development for the Ursuline Sisters, former director of the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center and a Catholic school superintendent in both Owensboro and Louisville, Ky. “Work is holy,” she said. “When we work with our hands or our minds, the work is consecrated to the service of God. When we plant a seed in the ground to grow vegetables for ourselves or for others we are sharing in the act of creation. When someone takes an old wood floor up and sands the pieces and puts it

down again in another house, the person is saving creation by their work. When we take care of the things we touch, share what we have with others, build a skyscraper or a dog house, we use the spirit of work and creativity that is within us. A spirituality of work helps make everything we do an act of creativity.” Sharing spirituality in the workplace or where someone volunteers can be tricky, but both speakers will utilize their experience in explaining how to create a person’s particular spirituality depending on their job. “The author Joe Holland has written that the spiritual energy of our institutions comes no longer from priests and nuns, but from dedicated lay people,” Father Shonis said. “Practicing the spirituality of work and helping people understand that work is not simply an economic activity, but rather a way for us to cooperate in God’s plan for a better world, is exactly what Pope John Paul II had in mind when he talked about a ‘new evangelization.’ And besides, where else could a priest meet so many of his parishioners in so short a period of time?” Sister Amelia said Jesus gave us an example of work. “When He was growing up, He was the son of a carpenter. Can you imagine some of the beautiful things He must have made before He began His real work of teaching and healing?” she said. “He gave us an example of consecrating all to God. He worked.” After lunch on Associates and Sisters Day, a panel

May 2013

A Word from Marian Dear Associate Sisters and Brothers, I’m planning ahead. And I need your help. I became an Ursuline Associate in 2002, at the urging of Sister Rosemary Keough. I made my lifetime commitment in 2005, shortly after beginning my time here in the Marian Bennett, OSUA Ursuline Partnerships office. The Coordinator of past 11 years have been a journey of Ursuline Partnerships discovery and inspiration for me. How about you? Some of us have been associates for over 25 years – others for just a year. Many of us began our journey with Angela Merici as a Belleville Covenant member or Paola Oblate. Regardless of when or where we began, we promised to support and work with the Ursuline Sisters, seeking new opportunities for growth and service. Each of us accepted God’s call with a public commitment much like the reminder on page 3. To highlight the 30th anniversary of the Associates of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, the August 2013 issue of the Update newsletter will feature ALL OF US! Will you share your experience as an associate? Please answer this question: How has your associate experience been beneficial—to you – to your family – to your faith community? I hope to receive your response by May 22. We would like to use this in a presentation on Associates and Sisters Day on June 8. Email marian.bennett@ maplemount.org or call 270-229-2006 or mail to 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount KY 42356. AND ANOTHER THING… I invite you to fill my mailbox with reservations for Associates and Sisters Day. The deadline to register is May 31. Use the form on the back page or register online. For overnight lodging contact Kathy McCarty at the Conference and Retreat Center at 270-229-0206. I look forward to sharing the day with all of you as we associates and sisters celebrate our journey together. Gratefully, Registration is now open for the 20132015 Spiritual Direction Training Program at Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center. The first session begins in October. Contact Sheila Blandford at 270-229-4103 ext. 804 by Aug. 31.

Associate Meetings...

TEXAS ASSOCIATE ALFRED WAYNE KARCHER ORDAINED A DEACON On Feb. 9, Alfred Wayne Karcher stood with 26 other men to be ordained a deacon for the Diocese of Dallas at the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe. For many years, Al felt the call to play a greater role in the life of the church. He and Donna, his wife of 37 years, became Belleville Covenant members in the 1980s after meeting Sisters Dorothy Helbling, Catherine Kaufman and Suzanne Schrautemyer. During that time, he said, “Sister Dorothy had a great influence on me.” After a move to Dallas, Al entered the diaconate training program. Ordination day was the culmination of six years of prayer, discernment and study for Al, as well as for Donna, also an Ursuline Associate. Deacon Al will be ministering at his home parish, St. Jude, in Dallas.

On June 8, Ursuline Associates will be making their initial and lifetime commitments at the 4 p.m. liturgy. In this 30th anniversary year of the Ursuline Associates, we invite you to renew your own associate commitment by praying your commitment with them. Loving God, I seek to deepen my union with You through communion with the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph. While continuing to live the vocation to which You have called me, I wish to embrace their charism and share in their mission, ministries, goals, ideals and challenges...I choose to deepen my relationship with this community through…commitment to Associate membership. I will strive daily to live a Christian life and to witness to the Gospel, knowing that their prayers support me. I promise to pray for the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph and to link my life with theirs in meaningful ways. I make this promise for Your glory. AMEN.

Kansas Y-DOSA…What have we been up to? Besides our traditional Saint Angela soup supper to celebrate our friend’s feast day in January, our girls have been busy with the first three formation meetings done every year covering the life of Saint Angela, Saint Ursula, core values and more. In March we had a little hats off to Saint Patrick with a snack of green Jell-o and cookies. We also had a very spiritual evening on Divine Mercy and Saint Faustina – one faith-filled girl and how she changed the world! Our next mission – fund raising for our annual Summit at the Mount this summer. On April 20, the Y-DOSA Kansas Chapter is having a catered “Spring Fling” luncheon for seniors. There will be big band music and a short talk about Y-DOSA. Pictured is a recent Kansas Y-DOSA gathering. Associates Lisa The girls are looking forward to serving our area seniors in Reilly, back row (far right) and Carol O’Keefe, front row (far keeping with our Y-DOSA core values! right), lead the group in their activities.

Velma Dees represents Angela in New Mexico By Sister Mary Matthias Ward

Earl’s Restaurant in Gallup, N.M., would often be the home base where Velma Dees and I would meet when we were planning a prayer day Visiting New Mexico in 2005, front for the associates or row, left to right: Sister Marietta making arrangements Wethington, Velma Dees, the late Sister Mary Evelyn Duvall. Back row: for a meeting and Sister Mary Matthias Ward, Marian Bennett and Sister Marie Montgomery. luncheon. Earl’s Restaurant would be where Velma Dees met with Sister Eve Marie Korzym to discuss Catechists’ training for the Catholic school teachers of Cibola County. Velma Dees, an Ursuline Associate from Grants, N.M., is an “isolated associate,” meaning there are no Ursuline Associates who come together to meet … no Ursuline Associates who come together to pray. Yet, Velma very much represents Angela Merici in her ministry to others. Velma is the director of religious education for K-6 grade for the parish of St. Teresa of Avila in Grants, N.M. In addition, Velma, single-handed, directs and implements the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIC) program, for those who need the Sacraments of Initiation from ages 7 to 13. She does a good job and fulfills an important service to her community, says Deacon Timo Lujan from St. Teresa Parish Church. Sister Clara Reid, who worked with her

in Grants, says she is amazed at her deep faith, her balancing the Catholic faith and the traditions of the Acoma tribe. Velma always had extended family living with her ... how like Saint Angela Merici in all of her ministries! One of Velma’s most important achievements is that she worked closely with the Diocesan Director of Religious Education Sister Eve Marie Korzym and offered classes for the certification of catechists. All who teach in the Catholic school are certified through Velma’s efforts. Velma was encouraged by Sister Mary Angela Matthews many years ago to continue her education in Albuquerque, and Velma became a master catechist with certification. Velma is a faithful and dedicated minister of the Eucharist, having a large group of people that she visits every week. She spends time visiting non-Catholic shut-ins, bringing with her a deep Catholic faith and the witness she provides. Can you not envision Angela Merici marching right along with Velma as she ministers throughout the week? When I ministered in Gallup we had associate meetings and days of prayer. Velma helped to plan and execute them. Always she was hostess, providing a beautiful meal. The hospitality of Angela Merici … the hospitality of the Ursulines was present. In summing up Velma, she is a person who sticks with something to the end, sees it to the finish. She definitely makes a difference in her area of the Southwest, Grants, N.M. She is indeed a daughter of Angela Merici.

The Most Loving Thing

couple of years ago a friend of mine was discerning ministry, trying to choose between two goods. She spoke to a wise woman who posed the question, “Which one gives you the greater opportunity to love?” That question has often helped my friend when things get hard. She still asks herself how she can be most loving and “what is the most loving thing to do?” That attitude must have guided Jesus when he walked on this earth. What was the most loving thing to do when his disciples didn’t seem to “get it?” What was the most loving thing to do when the people around him were not behaving in a loving manner? This is a good question to ask ourselves each morning when we begin our day. Where can I be most loving when I am involved with a difficult client? How can I be most loving when my child does not want to apply himself to his studies, doesn’t want to face her

responsibilities at home and at school? What is the most loving thing to do when I am asked for the third time to take responsibility for a committee at church when there seems to be so many who have more time and greater gifts? The spiritual director asks a similar question: What is your heart’s deepest desire? For those who are seeking God, the heart’s deepest desire is to do what God desires. What God desires is love. We can look to Jesus and to Angela who acted in loving ways. In scripture, Jesus told us to love God with all our heart and our neighbor as ourselves. Angela told us to love each other equally and to have each sister engraved on our heart. She also told us to learn from Our Lord. What we will learn from Our Lord is love. So let us go to the feet of Jesus and there sit in silence and allow him to speak to our hearts. What we will hear is love.

Reflection: Go with Angela to the feet of Jesus. Talk with Jesus about situations in your life that need to be approached with love and compassion. Listen to Jesus as he responds to you. Prayer: My Lord, you are my life, my hope. My whole heart, my will, my freedom of choice, my thoughts my speech and my deeds are at your service. Take all my spiritual and worldly possessions. I lay everything in Your hands. Take it, and let my whole self be at Your service, so that the kingdom of Your Father may grow in our world. –Praying With Angela Merici Join us as we pray for one another!
