From our Congregational Leader Dear Friends, In this issue you will explore the world of music that has enlivened the call of so many of our Ursuline Sisters. For many days now, I have been hearing the words, melody and harmonies of a hymn with which the Purdue University parish choir worked for months back in 1993. It was an endeavor marked by much prayer, many triumphs and setbacks, and the ultimate joy that accompanies that moment of worship when the hearts and minds and voices of a group unite in prayer and song. I share here some of the words [by Fred Pratt Green] of that hymn, “When in Our Music God is Glorified,” for your reflection: When in our music God is glorified, and adoration leaves no room for pride, it is as though the whole creation cried Alleluia! How often, making music, we have found a new dimension in the world of sound, as worship moved us to a more profound Alleluia! Let every instrument be tuned for praise! Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise! And may God give us faith to sing always Alleluia! Amen. This phrase, “Let every instrument be tuned for praise,” opens so many possibilities for musical reflections. What are our “instruments?” And how do we tune them for praise? Were not the authors of phrases such as “the music of the spheres,” “make a joyful noise to the Lord” and “s/he who sings prays twice” already tuned for praise? What is the source of music in your life and what are the many ways you tune them to praise? We have received from our faith traditions and our lives of prayerful interaction internal albums of the music of praise – lyrics, melodies, harmonies and tempos of awe for the Creator of all. As we enter our seasons of high celebration, may the stories in this Ursulines Alive further enrich your own symphony of praise, as we join together to fulfill our mission of sharing the great love of God. T

hat quote from the famed Spanish cellist illustrates to Sister Marie Julie Fecher why music holds a special place in the hearts of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph. “Music may be compared to a sweet elixir poured into the soul like a magical concoction, bringing with it a delight in and appreciation of sheer beauty,” Sister Marie Julie said. “It may assume the role of shaping and forming inner depths of beauty in mind and heart.” Sister Marie Julie was a music instructor from 194494, and the organist for her Ursuline community until retiring in 2013. Regardless whether a sister has made music her main ministry, or simply grows closer to God through its melodies, music has been intertwined in the Ursuline Sisters throughout their history. “Music is soothing to the mind, body and spirit,” said Sister Alicia Coomes, who incorporates music as part of her role as a pastoral associate in three western Kentucky parishes. “I don’t know of any other form of prayer that does this better for me than music. Perhaps it’s because I personally don’t have to ‘do’ anything to prepare … just listen and let the music move me.” “Music bounces in my mind more readily than words,” said Sister Marilyn Mueth, who while teaching for 21 years in Millstadt, Ill., also led the children’s choir, the parish adult choir and a liturgical band for students. “The songs’ messages are constantly with me.” “Beautiful music can create an intensity of body and spirit that is like ecstasy ... being beyond oneself,” said Sister Ruth Gehres, who has incorporated music wherever she has served. “When beautiful words become part of the music, it can be even more powerful.” “When I hear music or sing I am more quickly moved to meditation,” said Sister Joan Riedley, now serving as a music minister at Mary Queen of Peace Parish in Louisville, Ky. “I’ve always heard music is nine times praying and I believe this.” The Ursuline Sisters have had quite an impact on

music in the Owensboro area. Countless people still equate the campus at Maple Mount with the Greater Owensboro Summer Music Camp, held from 1975-2006. On Jan. 24, 2009, the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra Foundation endowed the principal chair of the second violin section in honor of Ursuline Sister Mary Cecilia Payne, whose efforts in music instruction at Brescia College beginning in 1952 led to the creation of the present Owensboro Symphony. Even beyond the individual instruction given to students by Ursuline Sisters across the nation, music has and always will be instrumental to the sisters’ spiritual life. “There are times when music can evoke emotions and lead me to a more personal experience with God than praying with words alone,” Sister Cheryl Clemons said. “Music is the inner voice of the soul,” said Sister Rose Marita O’Bryan, who still cantors during Mass at Maple Mount. “Together with poetry, music causes the divine in me to come alive. As John O’Donohue says in ‘Beauty, the Invisible Embrace:’ ‘A beautiful voice raises our hearts and stirs something ancient in us, perhaps reminding us of our capacity for the eternal.’” Any discussion among today’s Ursuline Sisters about their musical influences will lead to discussion of a small core of sisters -- Sister Marguerite Younker, Sister Joan Brown, Sister Mary Ivo Thompson, Sister Mary Victor Rogers, Sister Charlene Logsdon, Sister Marita Greenwell and Sister Francesca Hazel. “When I listened to Sister Marguerite Younker play the organ in chapel on Sunday evenings or Sister Mary Cecilia Payne play the violin, I thought I was being transported into the realm of angels,” Sister Marie Julie said. “I was blessed to work for my tuition in the Mount Saint Joseph music department,” said Sister Rosemary Keough, who now ministers with Centro Latino in Continued on page 4

Owensboro. “Sister Mary Ivo would play beautiful classical music on Saturdays while we cleaned.” Sister Elaine Burke transferred to Mount Saint Joseph Academy her junior year and was inspired by Sister Joan Brown, who helped her develop her singing voice. “I couldn’t afford private lessons, but she still let me participate with those who took lessons and she used my alto voice to fill in when needed,” Sister Elaine said. “She developed my range so I could sing soprano, second soprano and alto.” Sister Elaine’s first mission as a sister was in Nebraska. “Sister Francesca would come to the front room of our convent where there were many windows and I would sit looking out those windows with a beautiful snowfall and listen to her play the piano. Oh, how I wished I could play the piano like she did,” Sister Elaine said. “She knew I loved music and turned to me and said, ‘You really would like to learn how to play the piano, wouldn’t you?’ My answer came very quickly. She then taught me music every Monday night. It was mostly classical, but it started a real yearning in my heart that I would be able to play the organ in church.” Sister Rose Marita recalled her fifth-grade teacher, Sister Mary Victor, always had a daily 30-minute routine of singing. “I noticed she would always come by my desk and stay awhile. I loved it and tried to sing even better,” Sister Rose Marita said. When she attended Mount Saint Joseph Academy it was Sister Francesca who mentored and nurtured her for four years in high school and then for three years during postulancy and novitiate. “That provided such a grounding for me,” she said. “Music for me has an eternal resonance. It is the human voice that is able to create the most touching and tender music. My spirit soared when Sister Francesca took the music students to hear Eileen Farrell, the American dramatic soprano, who was performing in Owensboro.” Sister Catherine Marie Lauterwasser recalls how beneficial her musical instruction was from Sister Joan Brown, who was the director of the novitiate choir. “During the formation years, we were told ‘singing is twice praying,’” Sister Catherine Marie said. “Participating at Mass when there is singing seems to me a fuller participation than Mass without some singing.” Sister Fran Wilhelm

Sister Cheryl recalled her fondest memory as a Brescia College student was taking music lessons as a novice from Sister Marguerite. “She was a petite bundle of energy. During several lessons I was playing a pretty complicated piece I’d learned on the piano and she’d jump (almost literally) onto the organ bench part of the way through and begin to play with me in duet fashion,” Sister Cheryl said. “It was my only experience of duets, and I cherished the times we did them, because it was an experience of something bigger than me – of a concrete time when it was easily apparent that something I was contributing became part of something bigger that was better than either piece separately.” Regardless of their ministry, Ursuline Sisters often find ways to incorporate music. “In Hispanic ministry, music is very important,” said Sister Fran Wilhelm, who leads Centro Latino in Owensboro. “Because the great majority of our people have had little education, a well-chosen song can sometimes teach an entire subject.” “My first three missions were based on parishes’ needs for an organist,” said Sister Cecelia Joseph Olinger. “My fourth mission, St. Romuald in Hardinsburg, Ky., had no music ministry connected with it, but that’s where I began to love making music, especially with kids. Sister Marie Carol (Cecil) had given them a marvelous foundation in the primary grades, and by the time they got to me, they could sing in two parts. We even did a half-hour program of Christmas songs for the local radio station .... From then on, I was involved in music in every parish or school I served, always on a voluntary basis.” In 1984, Sister Cecilia Joseph began to play the guitar. That led her to teach children to play an instrument wherever she served. “I’ve taught guitar, recorder and color-coded bells,” she said. “At St. Anthony School in Zuni, N.M., I also worked with the children to lead the responsorial psalm and Alleluia and to use the drum with some music.” Sister Cecelia Joseph now ministers to three parishes in Missouri. Guitar Masses were new in the 1960s when Sister Joan Riedley entered the Ursulines, but she has spent 48 years

In 2001, the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, under the direction of Mike Bogdan, director of the Office of Music for the Diocese of Owensboro, recorded “Act, Move, Believe: Cantata in Community,” traditional hymns of the Ursuline Sisters. There are still a handful of copies of the CD available in the Mount Saint Joseph Gift Shop. playing guitar and leading the singing at Mass. “I’ve taught about 25 children how to play and when they were ready I’d invite them to join me in playing at the school Mass,” Sister Joan said. “I’ve played guitar at Indian pueblos in New Mexico. I’ve led the music in Teens Encounter Christ, Vacation Bible Schools and Camp Renewals.” Music has almost always been a part of Sister Ruth’s ministry. During her first eight years on mission, she taught in elementary and middle schools that all included serving as choir director and organist for the children’s choir. “On my first mission, in rural Nebraska, the large church was not heated in the winter, so the children’s Mass was celebrated around a kerosene stove in a basement chapel,” she said. “There I learned to play a little old pump organ, which was so fragile that one of the pedals occasionally fell off, leaving me to struggle through with one foot.” She stayed involved in music during her years on the faculty at Brescia College and at St. Meinrad (Ind.) College. She returned to the Mount this year after serving six years at Casa Ursulina in Chile, where one of her joys was a “coro,” a group of women who love music as much as she does. “I taught them some songs in English and a couple in Latin ... they taught me multitudes of wonderful Chilean folksongs,” Sister Ruth said. “Periodically we sang for the liturgy in our little mission church. These were poor women with lots of problems, but all the problems seemed to fade into the background during our happy Sister Joan Riedley

time of sharing music together.” Sister Rosemary incorporated music at every school in which she taught and played the organ at different parishes in Nebraska where she taught adult religious education. From 1969-76 and again from 1980-82 she taught at the Academy, where she learned the organ and the flute as a student. Her last two years there, she and Sister Catherine Marie Lauterwasser revived their high school instruments (clarinet and flute) and played some duets. Sister Mary Durr entrusted Sister Rosemary with the flute she’d learned on, bought in the 1920s, and Sister Rosemary was able to take it with her to ministries in Chile and Bolivia to play for liturgies there. “Since 1984 I’ve played the flute on special occasions at the Mount and with our choirs at Centro Latino,” Sister Rosemary said, who plays the flute each year at the Mount during Alumnae Weekend. The next generation of musicians and music teachers has helped to continue the Ursuline tradition and helped Catholics evolve in liturgical music. Those sisters include Sister Mary Durr, Sister Eileen Howard, Sister Catherine Marie, Sister Rita Lavigne, Sister Kathleen Dueber, Sister Maureen Griner and Sister Mary Henning, who retired in 2013 after 30 years as an associate professor of music at Brescia University and is now Director of Worship and Liturgy at the Mount. Sister Eileen said when she entered the novitiate in 1948, she was brought more deeply into the experience of the union of music as prayer. “With large numbers in the novitiate and regularly scheduled choir practices, we had well-trained choirs not to be equaled in later years,” she said. The changes brought about by the Second Vatican Council led to an exodus of many sisters and thus the end of the larger choirs, Sister Eileen said. Folk Masses with guitars tended to replace many “choral treasures” in sacred music, she said. “Church musicians have worked tirelessly since Vatican II to create new forms of music worthy of our worshiping communities,” she said. “We at the Mount have accepted the challenge of changes in the Mass. We can see a new and greater depth of church music emerging with choirs, song leaders and congregation taking their rightful place at worship.” n

Community College Students Learn Agriculture at Maple Mount By Dan Heckel, Mount Saint Joseph Staff

T

he Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph have a long history of being good stewards of the land entrusted to them in Maple Mount, as evidenced by the fertile and unpolluted farm that continues to serve them after more than 100 years. This fall, three acres of the sisters’ property south of campus along Cummings Road is being farmed by new tenants – agriculture students from Owensboro Community and Technical College. “We started a new agriculture program,” said Chelsea Williams, assistant professor in agriculture and director of the Agriculture Studies program at OCTC. “One track is commercial agriculture, but the new track is sustainable agriculture to take part in the local food movement.” Sustainable agriculture means farming in a way so that future generations will be able to utilize the land. “We want this to be hands-on for the students, but we don’t have a school farm,” Williams said. “Sister Sharon (Sullivan, congregational leader of the Ursuline Sisters) was interested in what we’re doing and has a background in education. We’re both interested in sustainable agriculture and we thought, ‘Wow, what an opportunity.’” The idea began with Brescia University in Owensboro wanting to add an agriculture component to the business degree it offers. OCTC wanted a program for students interested in smaller farming operations, such as working with farmers’ markets, Williams said. “Sustainable agriculture is geared toward students who are just beginning in farming,” Williams said. “Right now about 40 percent of our students do not come from farming backgrounds, but the program is new, so I expect that to change.” Once the lease agreement with the Ursuline Sisters was completed, the 12 students in the class began the first of October planting greens – mustard greens, turnip greens, kale, radishes, lettuce and tillage radishes that grow deeper and break up the soil. “We were a little behind because it was new. We’ll start

sooner next year,” Williams said. The students come out once a week to do maintenance. “They’ve done some plotting, tilling and planting, now they’re just making sure there aren’t weeds or pests,” she said. The ultimate goal of the program is to move into livestock production – mostly broiler chickens and hogs – and expand the garden so students can learn to market what they produce, either at farmer’s markets, on campus or for the sisters to eat, Williams said. A component of that is to make it a residential program for the students. It is a goal to live near the Mount so the students can watch over the livestock and be available if something happens, Williams said. The Ursuline Sisters have thus far only agreed to the three-acre garden. “We are happy to explore ways to cooperate with others whose mission reflects and furthers our own,” Sister Sharon said. “Such possibilities for expanding the Ursuline mission of education and stewardship of God’s creation are exciting to consider.” The garden has been a positive step for the students and the college. “The students are enjoying it,” Williams said. “They learn as much if not more by doing it themselves rather than just listening to me in class.”n

Why is the Center the Diocesan Spiritual Life Office? When the doors opened on the Mount Saint Joseph Retreat Center in September 1983, the first group to use it was the staff of the Diocese of Owensboro, Ky., and their new bishop, the Most Rev. John McRaith. The diocese previously had no retreat center, something McRaith knew needed to be remedied. To illustrate how important a retreat center is, he designated the Mount Saint Joseph Retreat Center in Maple Mount as the Spiritual Life Office for the diocese. “To set aside time to turn off the noise of the world and spend some time with God in a special way is so important,” McRaith said in 2008, which was the 25th anniversary of the Center. The setting at Mount Saint Joseph, home of the Ursuline Sisters’ Motherhouse, makes it special, he said. “God’s creation is so magnificent and such places are more conducive to the beauty and grace of others,” said McRaith, who is now bishop-emeritus. “The Mount is a beautiful example of God’s handiwork.” The former Mount Saint Joseph Academy was transformed into the Retreat Center over the summer of 1983. It was renovated in the 1990s and changed its named to the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center to make it clear it was available for multiple groups who need the opportunity for peace and quiet among nature. Even artisan groups that use the Center are getting in touch with their spirituality, whether they know it or not. “The spinners and quilters come because they enjoy the peace,” said Sister Ann McGrew, director of the Center. “It nourishes their spiritual life. It’s about relationships.” Sister Ann serves on the diocesan staff in her role leading the Spiritual Life Office, just as her predecessors did. Aside from her duties at the Center, she gets called on to lead retreats or organize prayer days for schoolchildren. There are always programs planned at the Mount to enhance spirituality, which are needed now more than ever because of the often frantic pace of life. In the coming months, guests are welcome to take part in any of these programs:  “An Evening with an Ursuline Sister,” a monthly gathering featuring one of four Ursuline Sisters who will lead a program that taps into a different aspect of spirituality. The programs are on the first Tuesday of the month, beginning with dinner at 5:30 p.m. The next session is Jan. 6 with “Learning to See as the Mystics See: A Primer,” led by Sister Rose Marita O’Bryan. On Feb. 3 is “The Art of Simplicity – Living a Simple Life” by Sister Amelia Stenger. On March 3, Sister Vivian Bowles

will talk about “A Great Treasure,” and on April 7, Sister Mary Matthias Ward will present on “Gratitude as Gift.”  On the second Thursday of each month from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Sister Ann McGrew will lead a discussion on “Rediscover Catholicism” beginning Jan. 8 and continuing throughout 2015, except in July. These programs are based on the book “Rediscover Catholicism” by Matthew Kelly.  On the third Thursday of every month, Sister Ann will lead “Senior Moments” to focus on ways to enrich the lives of senior citizens through prayer and other reflections. Leadership Council attends LCWR conference in Nashville The leadership Council of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph attended the annual assembly of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious on Aug. 12-15 in Nashville, Tenn. LCWR, made up of Catholic women religious who are leaders of their communities, represents about 80 percent of the 51,600 women religious in the United States. Nearly 800 of the group’s 1,400 members gathered in Nashville for their four-day annual conference.

In the joy of eternal life Sister Jean Madeline Peake, 99, died Oct. 23, 2014, at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 80th year of religious life. She was a native of Holy Cross, Ky. Sister Jean Madeline was always joyful and active. An educator for 48 years, she taught or was a principal throughout Kentucky and in Missouri and remained beloved by her former students. From 1985-86, she was parish minister for St. Joseph Parish, Leitchfield, Ky. From 1996-2002, she served as director of the craft room at Mount Saint Joseph. After her retirement in 2002, she continued to use her gifts as a seamstress to make beautiful quilts for the support of the Ursuline community. She was the oldest sister in the community at the time of her death. Survivors include nieces and nephews and the members of her religious community. The funeral Mass was Oct. 27 at Mount Saint Joseph, with burial in the convent cemetery. Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, Owensboro, was in charge of arrangements. Sister Mary Clarentia Hutchins, 94, died Nov. 5, 2014, at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 75th year of religious life. She was a native of Louisville. Sister Clarentia was passionate about cheering up children, especially those who were outsiders. A down-to-earth person, she was an animal lover who enjoyed collecting stuffed animals. An educator for 46 years, she taught throughout Kentucky. From 1987 until her retirement in 2005, she was engaged in outreach ministry in Louisville, including work with the Red Cross and visiting nursing homes and hospitals. Survivors include nieces and nephews and the members of her religious community. The funeral Mass was Friday, Nov. 7 at Mount Saint Joseph, with burial in the convent cemetery. Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, Owensboro, was in charge of arrangements. Your gifts help us bring music to others Dear Friends, “Music is forever; music should grow and mature with you, following you right up until you die.” This statement by Paul Simon gives us something to think about as we continue through each day. It certainly has been true throughout my life. When I came to Mount Saint Joseph Academy in 1963 to begin my high school education, I never dreamed that music would become so much a part of my life. Growing up in the small town of Glennonville, Mo., we heard country music on the radio and we only sang Latin at church. During Story Time on the radio or watching cartoons on TV, (when we finally got one), the story was always accompanied by wonderful music, but I didn’t know what the music was. The Lone Ranger always used the same theme. It fit the story perfectly. During our freshman year, everyone had to take music appreciation. It was during those classes that we learned about the William Tell Overture and were introduced to the Peer Gynt Suite by Grieg. Beethoven and Brahms became our best friends. I had heard all their pieces of music watching cartoons and finally made the connection. Music became even more important. During those years at the Mount, music was a part of everything. We learned wonderful new English songs for Mass because it was during those years that English began to be used in the liturgy. Lucian Deiss was the new name in liturgical music and Joe Wise and the St. Louis Jesuits began their careers. We had wonderful musical productions and recitals since so many of the students took private music lessons from Sister Francesca and Sister Marita. Music was everywhere. Sister Francesca always talked about music coming from one’s soul. She said music was all around us and in

us. A person’s heart beats in rhythm. Our hands could touch keys on a piano and make music. Our voices were instruments that God had given us. She would take us outside so we could listen to the wind in the trees and hear the songs of the birds. She made a reed pipe and showed us how the first instruments were probably made. She opened a world of music to us that we had never experienced before. Today, those things she taught us are still very important. Music is everywhere. It is different but no less beautiful. The new fire escape that is attached to our building sings its own haunting song when the wind blows through it. It took us a while to discover where the new sounds were coming from. The rhythm of the combine harvesting the crops, the rippling of the water in the little creek that runs through the farm, the sound of the wind blowing through Father Volk’s Norway spruce trees, all this and much more music is here at the Mount for us to enjoy. All we have to do is take the time to be aware of it and enjoy it. Music has always been here at the Mount and it will be for a long time to come. You are always welcome to come and enjoy it. We rejoice in the gifts of our sisters, given for the kingdom of God Sister Vivian Bowles was honored with the Brescia University Distinguished Alumni Award on Sept. 20, the highest honor the university bestows. Sister Vivian is a 1969 graduate of Brescia and began ministering Sister Vivian is joined by her fellow there in 1973, teaching honorees as Distinguished Alumni, education classes and Rick Higdon, left, and Art Ealum. supervising secondary student teachers. She developed the psychology department and served as a professor of psychology and director of the Counseling Center until 1995, when she was named the fourth president of Brescia. She served in that role until 2007. She is currently leading faith formation at St. Alphonsus Parish in St. Joseph, Ky. The Distinguished Alumni Award honors those graduates who exemplify the elements that encompass The Brescia Difference: Respect for the Sacred, Devotion to Learning, Commitment to Growth in Virtue and Promotion of Servant Leadership. Also honored this year by Brescia was Sister Sharon Sullivan, who received the Father Saffer Award from the Brescia Alumni Board on Sept. 19. The Father Saffer Award is given to an alumnus based on a lifetime of personal or professional achievement that personifies the ideals and basic mission of Brescia University. Sister Sharon became a full-time professor of special education courses at Brescia in 1987, rising to department chair and finally academic dean until 2010, when she was elected congregational leader of the Ursuline Sisters.

Sister Laurita Spalding was named 2014 Educator of the Year by the Diocese of Owensboro on Aug. 1. Sister Laurita teaches second grade at Holy Name Catholic School in Henderson, Ky., where she has taught since 2000. She has been teaching in Catholic schools in the Diocese of Owensboro for 46 years, and is celebrating her 50th jubilee as an Ursuline this year. Her award described her as an exemplary role model for the students, teachers and staff.

Sister Pam Mueller completed all requirements this summer to earn a graduate certificate in pastoral care from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis. Having completed 18 graduate credits, she plans to make application for national certification in campus ministry from Catholic Campus Ministry Association. The following sisters have moved into new ministries: • Sister Rebecca White is now coordinator of the Angela Oratory. • Sister Nancy Liddy is in training to become a chaplain. • Sister Martha Keller is leaving vocation ministry to become the full-time pastoral associate at St. Jerome in Fancy Farm, Sister Martha Ky.
