Be Thankful for Your Faith By Sister Rebecca White, OSU
Recently, I
became Godmother to a young man who no longer believes in God. I asked him how I could be his Godmother, given his unbelief, but that’s how life is sometimes. It doesn’t always make sense. Still, I treasure this role and am grateful that he feels safe enough to share with me his spiritual life. Yes, he is a deeply spiritual person.

This experience of Godmothering reminds me that faith is a gift, not a given. When was the last time that you expressed gratitude for your faith? Do you have moments when your faith is weak and moments when it is strong? A dear friend of mine had a big piece of one of her lungs removed last week; she had cancer. It was during this surgery that I felt deep gratitude for my faith in God. To whom else could I have turned at a time like that? Many, many people were praying for her and for me, and that helped me trust that God would do what was best. She came through surgery well but has a long way to go, in terms of rebuilding her physical strength and her breathing capacity. Each day is gift. Continued on back

Is it during your difficult times that you are most aware of what a great gift it is to believe in God? Or is it during those moments when the veil is lifted and you see the beauty all around you? Whom else would you be able to thank for that beauty? Here, in the northern hemisphere, in the temperate clime, we are experiencing autumn. Spectacular colors splash across trees and bushes. Sunsets are gorgeous. Let us pause to thank our gracious, beauty-loving God for these gifts and for that great gift of faith in God’s presence among and within us.

For the lonely among us…let us bring the comfort of a listening ear. For the poor among us…let us bring the riches of new possibilities. For the frightened among us…let us bring the strength of Jesus’ love. For the overwhelmed among us…let us bring the quiet of simplicity. For the child in all of us…let us bring the joy of giving thanks.
