MSJ Alumnae Cherish Memorable Teachers
M
ount Saint Joseph Academy classrooms have been empty and silent for many years, but the voices of beloved teachers continue to ring in the hearts of former students. Alumnae speak of wise, strong women with gentle ways who were patient yet straightforward and challenging. Frances Marie Goetz Gaddis A65 remembers Benita Riney who taught English - “that is where I learned to enjoy reading and writing short stories.” Mary Anne Kevil A58 confides, “Although I hated algebra, I loved Sister Charles Emaline. Although I didn’t much care for dissecting frogs, I enjoyed Sister Angeline’s biology classes and her unique sense of humor. I thoroughly enjoyed and learned lots of ‘common sense’ religious theology from Monsignor Gilbert Henninger on those Friday mornings when he taught our senior religion classes.” Rebecca Collins Morris A71 singles out Sister Agnese – “my

math teacher all four years. She always challenged me. As a senior she’d tell us she ‘just knew we couldn’t get the answer’ to a certain problem. This made us more determined.” Dawn Gifford Byrne A83 tells us, “Being a non-Catholic in an all-Catholic school I never really felt out of place and I owe it to (former) Sister Mary Danhauer to convince me to go on a Y.E.S. retreat and begin to understand Christ’s love for me. I have such great memories!” Kathleen Welz McNeary A67 describes Sister Charles Asa Williams as a “great principal … who always listened as Mount Saint Joseph lightened up the rules with changing times.” Elizabeth Whitlock Schwan A79 wrote, “I adored Sister Theresa Marie. She took a special interest in me and was always straightforward and patient. And I certainly tested her patience! She was a terrific role model with

regards to the respect that she gave to her students.” Mary (M.E.) Hunter A71 chose Sisters Mary Jude Cecil and Sister Rosemary Keough. She said, “Both just made sense.” Tina Weber Smith A74 speaks of Sister Agnese with awe. “I was scared to death of that woman until I took geometry. She always looked so mean, but was very kind. She always had a mischievous twinkle in her eyes when smiling.” Carolyn Sue Cecil A73 agrees. “Math was simply not my forte. But Sister Agnese made it doable. She had a fabulous sense of humor – a green thumb with all those ferns – could whip out a batch of fudge that you would die for – and a great teacher.” Ann Jenkins Caspar A62 said, “I think I loved all my sister friends, but I appreciated Sister Charles Emaline for being a patient math teacher as well as a woman who could laugh at herself and with others!” Susan Gray Schwerdtfeger A62 fondly remembers many of her teachers. “Sister Mary Boniface was a welcome port for me ‘in any storm.’ Many an afternoon, I hung out in the student shop just to be near her.” And then there was Continued on page 6

... p U g in Catch with Sister Catherine Marie Lauterwasser
Sister Catherine Marie Lauterwasser taught music at Mount Saint Joseph Academy during the day from 1973-79. After school, she began her other full-time job, as dorm mother on the third floor of Bloemer Hall. “It was a lot of work, but I loved it there,” Sister Catherine Marie said. “I never regretted it. I felt occasionally like I was a mother figure for the girls.” Sister Jane Irvin Hancock was also a dorm mother with Sister Catherine Marie. “Sister Jane Irvin and I had a ball,” Sister Catherine Marie said. “She was my right hand in helping the girls.” Sister Catherine Marie was a teacher for 16 years at five schools before coming to the Academy. “I had music students in the Academy, then I taught anyone else after school,” she said. “I taught keyboard, and I had the chorus. When someone got sick, I was the substitute teacher.” Music was always an integral part of Ursuline teaching, which Sister Catherine Marie learned when she was a student at the Academy for one year. Sister Mary Ivo Thompson was a music teacher and led the school orchestra. “Music was very important,” Sister Catherine Marie said. “Sister Joan Brown, Sister Joan Walz’ aunt, introduced us to the Ward Method of music. Many sisters taught the Ward Method in the schools they taught in.” The Ward Method was developed to teach American Catholic schoolchildren the fundamentals of music through vocal instruction. After leaving the Academy for a year to teach, Sister Catherine Marie returned as principal in 1980, and remained in that position until the Academy closed in 1983. “I loved teaching,” she said. “I think I was too busy to miss teaching when I was principal.” These days, Sister Catherine Marie is the Motherhouse community treasurer for about 85 sisters, making sure bills are paid and sisters get the money and items they need. She keeps her hand in music by producing the liturgy sheets for daily Mass, and directs a choir at Christmas and Holy Week. “I try to stay in touch with former students,” she said. She sees several former students at St. Alphonsus Church across the road from the Mount, because many of the day students at the Academy now belong to that parish. Since the creation of the Mount Saint Joseph website, www.ursulinesmsj.org, Sister Catherine Marie has received a number of emails from former students from both the United States and foreign countries. She got an email recently from a former student from the Chicago area. “There are a couple who continue to stay in touch, and they faithfully come back to the picnic each year,” she said. Former students can write to Sister Catherine Marie at 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356, or at catherine.lauterwasser@ maplemount.org. n

Class of 1967: Reunion of 45 years
Dear Alumnae, In just a few months, we will be coming together to celebrate Alumnae Weekend and graduation anniversaries. I cannot believe it will be our class’ 45th anniversary. It only seems like yesterday that the 40 girls in our class (see photo below) were walking up the aisle in the chapel to receive our diplomas. In 1967, we were getting ready to spread our wings, and have we ever spread them. We have some doctors, nurses, teachers and all kinds of other professions. We are located all over the United States. We have lost some of our classmates and some are facing illness. Let’s get together and share what is happening in our lives. The list of our classmates is in this edition of the New Mount. Please come to the Mount for Alumnae Weekend. As the Director of Development for the community, much is happening. We have a dinner planned in Kansas. There is a new project called a Phantom Dinner that we are doing in April. We are just completing our annual fund drive for the year and we are already planning for the picnic. We are also celebrating 100 years of service as Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph. During this year of celebration we are suggesting that people do service projects for others. It would be wonderful if we could announce that 100 percent of the alumnae support the mission of the Ursuline Sisters during this 100th anniversary year. They gave us our education. Can we give something back? Each month when we were at the Mount we got an allowance. I remember getting $2 from Sister Mary Catherine each month which totaled $20 for the 10 months we were in school. Seems impossible but we made it with that and were happy to have that much. Today, if each of us committed just $20 a year, we could make a difference in the work of the Ursuline community. We have about 1,000 alumnae on our records. We could donate $20,000 a year if each of us gave just $20. We could call it the Mount Girls’ Legacy Fund for the Ursuline Mission. Think about it. Many thanks to those of you who are already partners in our mission. We are grateful for your support of time, talent and treasure in the past and look forward to working with you in the future. “The girls at Mount Saint Joseph they say are mighty fine…” and you really are. Hope to see you in May.

Sister Ursula: “Gentle, quiet woman. She taught me a lot about gratitude. As a sister and newly graduated RN, I cared for her during a challenging bout with the flu. Even sick, she thanked me for giving her a shot... and fell back into her bed.” “Sister Johanna was the most gentle soul I have ever known,” says Rose Turnquist Mann A74. “I only wish that I could have visited with her when I was older. I don’t think she had any clue how she touched me.” And Carolyn Sue Cecil A73 agrees. “Sister Johanna still inspires me to this day. I carry this quote from her: ‘If I had two hyacinths, I would sell one for bread and save the other to feed my soul.’” Carolyn Sue continues, “And Sister Mary Durr, who gave me music, the most precious gift of all. I still go to visit her -- she doesn’t remember my name anymore but when asked who I am she says, ‘I don’t know her Sister Mary Durr name but I know it’s somebody who loves me very much.’ She has that one right!” The litany continues to echo through the years: Mrs. Omoto, Sister Stanislaus, Sister Charles Borromeo, Sister Francesca and Monsignor Bernard Powers. Did you know? Mount Saint Joseph Academy is featured in a stained glass window above the altar at Immaculate Parish. The window was installed sometime between 1990-96 when Father Richard Powers was pastor. He wanted a stained glass window of Mary, and the Horn family of Owensboro wanted to honor their parents, Dee and Anna Horn, by donating the window. Mount Saint Joseph was one of Anna’s favorite places, so Mary can be seen praying over the Academy. Dee worked at the steel mill for years, so the image of the steel mill (now being deconstructed) is included on the left. The Ohio River and Owensboro’s blue bridge are also depicted.
Mount girls join in Centennial Service Do you remember your class projects while you were a student at Mount Saint Joseph? You reached out to others in need, joining together to make the world a better place. In 2012, the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph are celebrating 100 years of service since their inception in 1912. The theme for the year is “Woven with Threads of Courage and High Hope.” The sisters have always stood for service to others, so the main way they want to celebrate this anniversary year is with “Centennial Service.” Sisters, associates and other supporters of the sisters are being invited to identify a need in their communities and build a service project around the number 100. What will Mount Girls do? Be thinking and praying for inspiration.
