From the President Dear Friends, Each year, we take the opportunity with this Annual Report to express our gratitude to our many benefactors – parents, alumnae, faculty/staff, grandparents and friends of Ursuline – for their generosity in support of the Academy’s mission of educating young women to reach toward the light and the good.

This year in particular, we are also reminded of our debt of gratitude to the Ursuline Sisters, who founded Ursuline Academy in Boston and Dedham. In August, we received news that the Ursuline Order decided to merge its Northeast Province with its Central Province, and that the Ursuline Sisters residing in the Convent would join other Ursuline communities on the East Coast. While we have enjoyed a successful five years under the able leadership of Principal Mary Jo Keaney ’82 and our lay faculty, we are ever mindful of the thanks that we owe the Ursuline Sisters for the years they spent teaching us through their words, actions and deeply profound faith.

While the Ursuline Order is consolidating, the Academy itself has never been stronger or more vibrant. We welcomed 445 students to campus in September, and made many wonderful improvements to the physical plant to welcome them, including renovating the Carriage House to accommodate three classrooms, and upgrading the Tea Room, student restrooms, the locker room, library and foyer.

This summer, we were pleased to welcome Tim Lawlor as Vice President of the Academy; his talents will solidify advancement efforts, and ensure completion of Ursuline’s current campus master plan. Tim comes to us with nearly thirty years of advancement experience at Stonehill College and Newton Country Day School. Having served on the Ursuline Academy Advancement Committee and the Board of Trustees, as well as being a graduate of Ursuline Academy’s kindergarten when it operated in the Bear Cave, Tim is well-acquainted with the Academy’s proud tradition of Serviam and the charism of St. Angela.

I express the sentiments of our entire faculty and staff when I say that we are proud of our nearly 70-year commitment to educating the heart, mind, and soul of young women in the spirit of St. Angela, and in following the unwavering example set by the Ursuline Sisters. We look forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come, and are richly blessed by the support of our community.

BRING YOUR INSIDE OUT Throughout this magazine you will see photography and language that reflects Ursuline Academy’s new brand platform: “Bring Your Inside Out.” The new look, being rolled out this fall, is the culmination of over a year’s worth of effort by a team of people including school administration, advancement, admissions and KHJ Brand Activation, a marketing and branding firm led by Judy Habib ’71.

The group conducted surveys and focus groups with students, parents, teachers, and alumnae to identify what makes Ursuline unique and considered several new branding platforms. The team felt that ‘Bring Your Inside Out’ communicates what Ursuline does for its students in a way that is new yet true to the Academy’s heritage. It sums up the Ursuline Academy experience, which seeks to help each girl to find her voice, be confident, be supportive of other girls and women, and be committed to the Serviam ideal of being the best she can be in order to serve others.

“This rebranding effort is not intended to be a change in direction, but a refinement of how we capture the uniqueness of the Ursuline experience in words and pictures,” said President Rosann Whiting.

Seeing the potential in every student.

Ours is a proud history of inspiring. For nearly 70 years, Ursuline Academy has been transforming the lives of young women as they discover their personal gifts and talents. Our nurturing community helps every girl find her voice so that she can approach life with confidence and a higher purpose – a purpose that serves God, family, community and the world at large.

Guided by the teachings of St. Angela Merici, the foundress of the Ursuline Order, Ursuline students are part of an educational tradition dating back more than 500 years. They are members of a global community of schools bound by a commitment to the core philosophy, Serviam, which means “I will serve.”

So as our students pursue their studies and direct themselves toward discovering their interests, they practice their faith through service – and in the process learn to have faith in themselves.

Ten Years Later: Remembering the Legacy of Martha B. McCann

While teaching at Ursuline from 1993-2003, Martha B. McCann was a daily presence in the lives of hundreds of Ursuline students who were lucky enough to call her their teacher. And although this year marks the tenth anniversary of her passing after a courageous battle with cancer, her legacy continues to influence UA’s current students. While they will never have a chance to meet her, each year a student is selected to receive a scholarship in Mrs. McCann’s name. Wanting to continue her legacy of giving selflessly to help her students, her husband Tim and her four children – Kate, Paul, Alison and Laura ’02 – established a scholarship in her memory. The express purpose of this scholarship is to make an Ursuline education possible to a girl whose means would otherwise not allow her to attend the school. Since 2007, the scholarship has been awarded to one incoming student each year, and continues with the student throughout her career at Ursuline.

“The scholarship grew out of who we, her family, perceived Martha to be and what she perceived Ursuline to be,” explains Tim McCann.

After graduating from the University of Massachusetts in 1968, Martha taught in public schools in Western Massachusetts for many years, an experience which she cherished. But when she arrived at Ursuline, Mrs. McCann viewed it as the “epitome of her career.” The school provided an opportunity to “make a student’s prospects in life significantly different” by surrounding her with a set of role models and a culture of high expectations that encourage her to bring out her best efforts.

Mr. McCann recalls his wife as an intellectual whose best friends were Shakespeare, Samuel Clemens, and Ernest Hemingway. An unassuming manner, profound wisdom, and a caring personality were hallmarks of her teaching style, causing one of her students to write “Thank you for those peaceful morning classes. Thank you for the first “A” paper I ever wrote.

Kate Boxmeyer, Paul McCann , Martha McCann, Tim Thank you for encouraging me to write – you were the first teacher that McCann, Alison Sower, Laura McCann Barrett ’02 ever really ‘believed’ in me.” In keeping with Martha’s personality, the McCann family views the scholarship as a “flat-out gift,” with no expectation of thanks or reward. In fact, they choose not to know the identity of the recipient. Martha and Tim McCann always taught their four children that “the cornerstone of life is opportunity. When you are presented with an opportunity, you can pick it up or pass it by, but you should always look at it.” Likewise, the family knows that “the girls who receive the scholarship could make the most of it or not – the choice is theirs.” Indeed, most of the scholars have gone on to graduate from Ursuline and attend prestigious colleges.

In 2002, Mrs. McCann delivered a speech entitled, “I know that I am loved.” In it, Martha described that which she believed in. She wrote, “I know that I am loved. I believe that the Kingdom of God is within each of us.... I see Christ in my family, in my students, in my colleagues, my friends, in the devotion of the Ursuline Sisters, and in the ever-inspiring legacy of St. Angela Merici.”

Annual Fund 2013-2014 Gifts to the Annual Fund sustain the foundation of excellence that allows Ursuline Academy to flourish. Other Ways to Give Back We are grateful for the many ways that our alumnae and friends support our efforts at the school. While some choose to make a financial commitment, others give their time or talent. One loyal parent, Clare Keefe P’08, has for the past ten years quietly but faithfully applied for and received the 9/11 Community Spirit Mini-Grant from the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation on Ursuline’s behalf. All told, the Academy has received $5,000 from the Foundation, which has helped various departments purchase “the extras,” such as technology and supplies for the Music Department, Art Department and WUA News.

2014 Senior Parent Gift Student Restroom Renovations Mirror, mirror on the wall...When an upgrade of the student bathrooms was first proposed to the parents of the Class of 2014 as their Senior Parent Gift, it was originally met with more than a little hesitation. Who, they wondered, would want to be remembered on a plaque outside the door of the Ladies Room?

When they consulted their daughters for feedback, however, the winds shifted, as the girls confirmed that a bathroom upgrade was indeed a much-needed and much-desired campus improvement. As we returned to school in the fall of 2014, both student bathrooms are sporting new floors, lighting, fixtures, sinks, counters and best of all, mirrors! Big mirrors! Many thanks to these parents who were brave enough to step outside their comfort zone in support of this important project!

In order to accommodate the school’s enrollment of just over 440 students, the building has been transformed into three bright technology-equipped classrooms.

The project was completed over the summer thanks to the combined efforts of the UA Facilities Team, Kevin Hines P’93 of Compass Project Management, Sean Fahy P ’17 ’19, President of CM&B (Construction Management & Builders), and Architectural Resources Cambridge.

The 2013 Brescia Ball was a Night to Remember For their longstanding commitment and dedication to Ursuline, the 2013 Brescia Ball honored a sister and brother combination: Elizabeth McManus Howard ’76, P’04, ’08, ’12 and Peter McManus P’00.

As an alumna and a parent of three alumnae, Beth has served the Academy in myriad ways, from organizing sponsors for the golf tournament to assisting with management of the science wing addition. As the parent of an alumna as well as the Academy’s Director of Facilities, Peter has shown loving care in the day to day stewardship of the campus, as well as quiet dedication in his leadership of recent improvement projects.

Held at Lake Pearl in Wrentham, MA on November 23, the Brescia Ball was attended by 315 guests – students, parents, alumnae, trustees, Sisters, faculty, staff, past parents and friends. Led by Co-chairs Angela Canale P’17 ’19 and Nancy McAdams P’15, a Brescia Ball record was established as $110,000 was raised to renovate the Academy’s beloved Tea Room into a brighter and more welcoming space.

The Brescia Ball celebrates the legacy of St. Angela Merici, founder of the Order of St. Ursula, which was the first female teaching order. St. Angela was born in Desenzano del Garda, a town in the Province of Brescia, Italy.

FORE THE GIRLS! Both golfers and non-golfers joined together on June 12 at the Walpole Country Club, raising $47,000 in support of the Ursuline Athletic program. The 141 golfers enjoyed the championship course under cloudy but comfortable skies, and even more joined for dinner and a silent/live auction.
