From the President Dear Ursuline Community, This Annual Report celebrates parents, alumnae, faculty/staff, grandparents and friends of Ursuline who do so much to help us fulfill our mission each day. With your help, we are developing young women of integrity and purpose in the faith-filled tradition of the Ursuline Sisters.

In the words of St. Angela Merici: “How much you have to thank Him for this and, at the same time, pray to Him that…He would deign to give you such knowledge and capacity that you may be able to do work worthy of praise in His sight and put all your zeal and strength into carrying out your duty.” (from the Prologue to the Counsels).

Thanks to your generous support, we at Ursuline are able to carry out our duty and educate young women to grow academically and spiritually. I extend my sincere appreciation for your many gifts of prayers, time, talents and financial contributions, all of which strengthen the Academy’s ability to serve our students.

The Board of Trustees continues to work tirelessly in support of the mission of the Ursuline Sisters to further the future of the Academy. I am pleased to announce Meg Reynolds ’82 as the first alumna Chair of the Board of Trustees in the history of Ursuline Academy. Ms. Reynolds succeeds Mr. David Putnam P’89, who ends his ten-year tenure as Chair of the Board and will remain involved with Ursuline as Trustee Emeritus. You can read more about Mr. Putnam’s numerous contributions to the Academy, as well as an introduction to Ms. Reynolds, on pages 2-3.

Ursuline also welcomes four new Trustees to the Board in 2013-14. Angela Crispi P’14, Michael Haynes P’07, ’12, Regina Sullivan ’78 and Dr. George Violin each bring specific skills that will enhance the work that is currently being accomplished by the Trustees. We are pleased that they have accepted our invitation to join this group and look forward to working with them.

This is an important time in the history of Ursuline Academy. The Academy is incredibly blessed by the leadership and support of each of our donors. I am grateful for the continued support of this special community as we endeavor to uphold the dream of St. Angela Merici and the vision of the Ursuline Sisters well into the future.

Passing the Torch David W.C. Putnam P ’89 Ends Tenure as Chair of the Board of Trustees; Margaret Reynolds ’82 Steps Up as First Alumna Chair

David Putnam P ’89 has ended his tenure as Chair of Ursuline Academy’s Board of Trustees after ten years of dedicated service to the mission of the Ursuline Sisters and the Academy. Margaret (Meg) Reynolds ’82 will succeed Mr. Putnam as the first alumna Chair of the Board in the history of the Academy.

Mr. Putnam’s years of service to the Academy began in the 1980s, when his daughters Gretchen and Meredith were students at UA. Both he and his wife Yvette attended events and bid at the annual dinner auctions held by the then-Development Office. After his daughters’ graduation, Mr. Putnam continued his loyal involvement at Ursuline. “Mr. Putnam’s dedication toward assisting the Ursuline Sisters came from his gratitude for the role that they played in the lives of each of his daughters,” said Academy President Rosann Whiting.

1994 marked the inception of the first Ursuline Academy Board of Trustees, and Mr. Putnam has been with the board since those early years. He served as the Finance Committee Chair and the Vice-Chair of the Board prior to becoming the third Chair of the Board in 2003.

The first decade of the 2000s brought great changes at Ursuline: the addition of the Science Wing and the transition to the President-Principal model of educational leadership. Sister Mercedes Videira, o.s.u., former Principal of the Academy, cites Mr. Putnam’s leadership in the construction of the Science Wing as invaluable.

Not only did he advise the Sisters on the financial aspect of the construction, but he was able to bring in other experts to consult on the project. “He was a great asset,” Sister Mercedes said. “He had so many experts at his fingertips to advise us in many different ways, from money, to the process, to what other schools had done.”

“Giving back to your school is as important as what you take from your school. Ursuline has continually raised the bar, and I want the girls there today to know that they can be anything they want to be, and to give them the tools to say that with confidence.”

– Meg Reynolds ’ 82 At the close of his term as Chair of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Putnam reflected on the many enhancements Ursuline has made since his daughters were students. “This has been a combined effort of our entire excellent group of Trustees, past and present,” Mr. Putnam said. “It has been a privilege to serve with these individuals. We are fortunate to have Ms. Reynolds as the first alumna Chair of the Board and I am confident that everyone will stand behind her as she leads the Academy forward.”

Meg Reynolds ’82 has served on the Board of Trustees since 2011, most recently as Chairperson of the Finance Committee, and is CEO of her own investment firm, Westwood Global Investments, LLC. “Ms. Reynolds will be an exemplary leader for the Academy and will serve her fellow alumnae well,” said President Whiting. “She is an adept listener who possesses a passion for her alma mater.”

Involvement at Ursuline has always been a family affair for the Reynolds clan. “My brothers went to kindergarten there and my sisters and I all went there,” Ms. Reynolds said. Her father, William P. Reynolds Sr., was a member of the school committee while his daughters, Eileen Reynolds Lindburg ’68, Rebecca Reynolds ’77 and Meg, attended UA. He was instrumental in the creation of the athletic field behind the school and received an award from the Sisters for his service to the school.

“For Dad, faith has always come first, and service,” Ms. Reynolds said. “That is why Ursuline was so important to him.” Ms. Reynolds’ nieces, Kelly ’04 and Kathleen ’06, are also graduates of the Academy.

Ms. Reynolds and her fellow board members will continue to keep the mission of the Sisters central to the Academy as they work to enhance the Ursuline experience for all students. “We must continue with academic excellence and the mission of St. Angela Merici,” said Ms. Reynolds. “To remember and carry that mission is even more important now, without Sisters teaching in the classroom anymore.”

As an alumna of the Academy, Ms. Reynolds brings an invaluable understanding of the mission of the school and a deep appreciation for the work of the Ursuline Sisters.

Everyone at Walpole Country Club on June 13, 2013 knew that it was not a day for golf. Overcast skies and cool temperatures led to heavy rain and soaked clothing.

In spite of these challenges, 122 golfers took to the course and showed their UA hearts were strong in playing through the precipitation.

Mary C. Gleason Mary C. “Babe” Gleason passed away in October 2012. She was the dear sister of Sister Martha Gleason o.s.u. ’54.
