President’s message Dear Alumnae/i and Friends, After an especially busy period, we are delighted to be sending you this Fall 2018 issue of Voices, the Ursuline College magazine. Among the projects that have occupied us since we last published Voices are: celebrating the 50th anniversary of the College’s move to Pepper Pike (page 10); planning a gala for 300 guests in support of student scholarships (page 11); hosting national speakers including an Olympic medalist, the former CEO of Catholic Relief Services, and author and journalist Cokie Roberts (pages 12-13); re-conceptualizing, re-designing, and re-writing our website; and taking a thoughtful and extensive look at the way we communicate the Ursuline story to prospective students.

Those last two initiatives – updating the website and the communications – were prompted by a three-year strategic plan approved by the Board of Trustees in fall 2017. Faculty and staff members have been hard at work, first creating and now implementing this plan, which we have titled Leading a Legacy. It calls for: •• a re-affirmation of the focus on women in our undergraduate programs •• a carefully considered review of our portfolio of academic offerings •• a fresh look at all marketing and recruitment efforts •• increased attention to retention and graduation rates All of this is to say that faculty, staff and students remain committed to the mission and the vitality of Ursuline College.You need not take my word for it, however. In these pages, you will read about a few of the programs and offerings that make Ursuline College distinctive, including our international service learning trips, our embrace of digital humanities, forward-thinking academic programs and partnerships and a nationally noted gesture of kindness and magnanimity by one of our student-athletes.

RECENT APPOINTEES BRING NEW ENERGY, IDEAS TO COLLEGE

LAFONTANA

Vice President for Academic Affairs Kathryn M. LaFontana, PhD, was appointed vice president for academic affairs and assumed office in July 2017. LaFontana came to Ursuline from the College of New Rochelle (CNR), in New York.

As CNR’s associate vice president for academic affairs for mission, new programs and assessment, LaFontana had been responsible for leading efforts to establish new academic programs, implement new data management systems, and manage grant activities. Prior to her six-year tenure at CNR, LaFontana served at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. She earned a doctorate in social psychology from University of Connecticut.

“Dr. LaFontana brings a breadth of experience in academia, including more than 16 years as a faculty member and well-published researcher in psychology, and more than 15 years as an administrator in roles of increasing responsibility. Her background makes her an ideal fit for our needs at Ursuline,” said Sister Christine.

Vice President for Institutional Advancement

Richard J. Konisiewicz was appointed Vice President for Institutional Advancement in March 2016, succeeding Kevin Gladstone, who retired after 19 years at the college.

Konisiewicz brought more than 20 years’ experience in nonprofit fundraising, including almost 13 years as director of corporate, foundation, and government relations at Cleveland Institute of Art. Since arriving at Ursuline, he has spearheaded a highly successful gala (see page 11), initiated the biennial Women Who Light the Way event (see page 12), expanded community engagement and corporate support, and exceeded his philanthropy goals for the College’s crucial Annual Fund.

Vice President for Enrollment Management

Named President of Ohio Board of Nursing

DILENO

Susan Dileno is Ursuline’s new Vice President for Enrollment Management, overseeing admission and financial aid functions.

She joined College leadership in May 2018.

A native Clevelander, Dileno served most recently at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, where she was vice president for enrollment management from 2014 until 2017. There, she implemented new technology that enhanced the flow of communication with prospective students and improved tracking.

She also spearheaded a digital marketing campaign for OWU and created new financial aid strategies to assist students in graduating in four years. Prior to her appointment at OWU, Dileno served in enrollment management roles at Baldwin Wallace University, Case Western Reserve University and Hartwick College in upstate New York.

Dileno replaced Deanne Hurley, who had served the college as both vice president for enrollment management and vice president of student affairs since 2013. With Dileno’s appointment, Hurley resumed the position she held for more than 20 years, vice president of student affairs, dean of students.

Patricia A. Sharpnack, DNP, RN, CNE. NEA-BC, ANEF, Dean and Strawbridge Professor of Ursuline’s Breen School of Nursing, was elected president of the Ohio Board of Nursing in November 2016.

She was nominated and elected by her board colleagues.

“It is an honor to be chosen by my peers to lead this important oversight body,” Dr. Sharpnack said. “I am committed to the effective regulation of nursing education and practice to protect the public. It is a privilege to work with my esteemed colleagues and staff of the Ohio Board of Nursing.”

Dr. Sharpnack was appointed to the Ohio Board of Nursing in 2014. The mission of this body is “to actively safeguard the health of the public through the effective regulation of nursing care.”

Dr. Sharpnack teaches leadership, policy and education courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs at Ursuline. She has been a chief nursing officer and administrator at major hospitals in the Cleveland area and has received numerous awards and professional accolades in her field.

She earned her bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree from Ursuline College, master of science in nursing (MSN) degree from the University of Akron and doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree from Case Western Reserve University.

Board of Trustees Welcomes Eight New Members Ursuline College has welcomed eight new members to its Board of Trustees since 2016 Lori Kalic

Kalic is partner at RSM US, a leading international provider of audit, tax and consulting services. As an accountant and business advisor, she has led audits of a variety of entities from foundations to government organizations. She is a member of the Accounting Practices Committee of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and a recipient of the YWCA Woman of Professional Excellence award.

Jay Masurekar

Masurekar heads the gaming and travel investment banking practice at KeyBank Capital Markets (KBCM), the investment banking arm of KeyCorp. He serves on the Board of Trustees of KeyBank Foundation and chairs the Asian Key Business Impact Networking Group that promotes diversity and inclusion within KeyCorp as well as the communities in which KeyCorp operates.

Cynthia Moore-Hardy

Moore-Hardy is president and CEO of Lake Health, a healthcare system that includes a network of 600 physicians and more than a dozen facilities. She received the YWCA Women of Achievement award and was named to Inside Business 100 Most Influential CEOs. Following her term as chair of the Ohio Hospital Association Board she received the 2017 OHA’s James R. Castle Distinguished Service Award.

Kimberley Osborne-Milstein ’98

Osborne-Milstein is a for mer model and entrepreneur, having appeared in advertisements, television commercials and an HBO film starring Rob Lowe. Since earning a degree in Fashion Merchandising and Design from Ursuline College, she has designed and marketed unique fashions, accessories and textile graphics.

Anthony Panzica

Panzica is the owner, president and chief executive officer of Cleveland-based Panzica Construction Co. Panzica serves on a variety of boards and committees in the nonprofit sector and maintains an active role in industry-related groups.

Lisa D. Sutton

Sutton is a member of the senior leadership team of the Law Department at Eaton Corporation.

As vice president/chief counsel – environment, health & safety, she is responsible for the company’s environment, health and safety legal program worldwide. Sutton also coordinated the establishment of Eaton law department’s inclusion and diversity program.

Eddie Taylor, Jr.

Taylor is founder and president of Taylor Oswald, a venture he launched with Oswald Companies, one of the nation’s largest independent, employee-owned insurance brokerage firms. Taylor has previously owned or operated companies in a variety of industries including warehousing and distribution.

Father Gary D. Yanus

Rev. Yanus is both vicar general and judicial vicar for the Diocese of Cleveland. As vicar general, he has the authority to assist Cleveland Bishop Nelson Perez in matters of diocesan governance. As judicial vicar, he has the authority to judge cases in the diocesan ecclesiastical court and oversees the administration of justice in the name of the Bishop.

Catholic Community Connection Fellowships Benefit Students, Community Over the last two summers, two Ursuline students have served internships that helped boost their future careers while exposing them to the culture of a Catholic ministry.

Thanks to the Summer Fellows Program sponsored by the Northeast Ohio ministry Catholic Community Connection, Sarah Kiefer ’17 (pictured above) spent the summer of 2017 interning in the legal office at the Sisters of Charity Health System and assisting the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland before she started law school. Haley Knox ’19 (pictured below) spent the summer of 2018 interning in the business office of Regina Health Center.

The Summer Fellows Program places students from Northeast Ohio’s four Catholic colleges in paid, 10-week internships meant to address needs of Catholic ministries while introducing young adults to careers in Catholic organizations. Qualified candidates come from Borromeo Seminary, John Carroll University, Notre Dame College and Ursuline.

On Fridays during their internships, the fellows gather and participate in programming that includes orientation to serving in Catholic ministries, professional and leadership development, and elements of social justice. In late June 2018, interns and their mentors gathered at Ursuline for a presentation by Professor George Matejka on Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment and social justice.

Sister Christine De Vinne said, “The Summer Fellows Program hosted by Catholic Community Connection challenges students to expand their education from the classroom into the real world.

Even more importantly, it gives them experience working alongside committed leaders in Catholic institutions, the model for a life of meaningful service.”

Higher Ed Partnerships Open Doors of Opportunity Ursuline College has recently partnered with institutions in Northeast Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. to offer accelerated paths for students to earn their degrees in less time and at a lower cost.

In June 2017, the College partnered with Duquesne University School of Pharmacy to offer students the opportunity to earn their bachelor’s degree and doctor of pharmacy degree in seven years instead of eight. After three years of majoring in chemistry at Ursuline, qualified students may enroll at Duquesne for four years to earn a doctor of pharmacy degree.

A similar, longstanding partnership continues with University of Toledo College of Pharmacy.

Also in 2017, the College signed an articulation agreement with The Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law to offer students direct admission into its program after three years of successful study at Ursuline. This agreement is similar to Ursuline’s partnership with the Cleveland Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University, which was signed in 2016.

Counseling and Art Therapy Earned New Accreditation Ursuline’s graduate program in Counseling and Art Therapy earned accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), in recognition of the fact that the program has met rigorous national standards for quality.

Technical and Career Campus. Both programs are designed to open doors of opportunity for students and help meet Northeast Ohio’s demand for nurses with the bachelor of science in nursing degree (BSN).

An existing dual enrollment agreement with Cuyahoga Community College enables students to transition smoothly and economically to Ursuline for completion of a bachelor’s degree.

Ursuline College has been named a top four-year college for transfer students by Phi Theta Kappa, a 3.5-million-member honor society recognizing academic achievement at colleges that grant associate’s degrees. The organization named 112 colleges and universities across the U.S. to its 2018 Transfer Honor Roll.

In addition to its traditional undergraduate program, Ursuline offers a degree-completion program for working adults with classes held in the evening and on Saturdays in flexible five-week blocks. Called UCAP, for Ursuline College Accelerated Program, the program provides one-on-one support and guidance for students seeking to complete bachelor’s degrees while tending to family and job responsibilities.

Phi Theta Kappa’s Transfer Honor Roll recognizes excellence and success in community college transfer pathway development. Colleges are evaluated in the areas of scholarship and financial aid, admissions outreach, student support services, and student engagement opportunities.

New Academic Programming Responds to Social Needs

40-credit core curriculum in fall 2017 that includes seminars rooted in the teachings of St. Angela Merici, the 15th-century saint who founded the Ursulines. Mary Frances Pipino, associate professor and director of the Ursuline Studies program, explained that these nine credits are integrated with 31 credits in the arts and sciences, “demonstrating a commitment to teaching in the Catholic intellectual tradition that is lifelong, interdisciplinary, inclusive, collaborative, socially responsible, and spiritual in nature.�

The Core Curriculum seeks to develop certain abilities that help students to excel in academics and in life. Ursuline graduates should be able to: analyze and synthesize, communicate effectively, demonstrate intercultural knowledge, make decisions based on values, cultivate understanding of human expression, solve problems, and take responsibility for society by accepting the obligation to act in response to unjust or oppressive social situations.

ONLINE BSW Beginning fall 2018, Ursuline will offer a fully online bachelor’s degree program in social work (BSW) through UCAP. Paraprofessionals such as case workers, home health aides, and human service workers in social service agencies and hospitals can complete their BSW while continuing to work.

“With this online capability, we will be able to offer our collaborative, flexible, and challenging curriculum to a broader cross-section of people who want to be capable and compassionate social workers,” said Program Director Sharon Zimmerman Wilson, MSSA, LISW-S.

PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSE PRACTITIONER In response to the significant and growing need for skilled and compassionate mental health care providers, Ursuline’s Breen School of Nursing launched a post-master’s certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) which prepares students to take the board certification examination for PMHNP. Open to certified nurse practitioners, this three-semester track prepares students to provide clinical management to patients with coexisting medical and mental illnesses.

ADULT-GERONTOLOGY ACUTE CARE NURSE PRACTITIONER The Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program launched in fall 2016 to meet the need for advanced practice nurses to care for people with unstable chronic conditions, complex acute illnesses, and critical illnesses. Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioners work in a variety of in-patient settings.

SUPERINTENDENT LICENSURE Ursuline now offers courses leading to the superintendent’s license. Classes began in fall 2016 in a cohort model. A total of four courses are needed including You as Superintendent, The Business of the School District, Educating the Whole Child, and Superintendent Internship and Seminar. Students take one course per semester for a total of four semesters.

FENN EDUCATIONAL FUND: CAREER READINESS A two-year grant from the Fenn Educational Fund of the Cleveland Foundation supported the college’s First -Year-to-Career program, an initiative that places students in professional settings for “micro-internships” in their freshman year and provides career-focused activities for all four years of college.

CLEVELAND FOUNDATION: PRE-NURSING A generous grant from the Cleveland Foundation supported the Breen School of Nursing’s introduction of a new pre-nursing program aimed at students who want to pursue nursing but require additional instruction and coaching to prepare for the rigors of nursing school. The new cohort-style program provides academic, social and financial support. Some of the students in the fall 2017 cohort are pictured above.

CAC: 50 TH ANNIVERSARY EVENTS Thanks to a generous grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, Ursuline presented a series of public cultural events celebrating the College’s 50th year on its Pepper Pike campus. Events included: • “Letters from Anne and Martin,” a staged performance of writings by Anne Frank and Martin Luther King, Jr. by actors from New York’s Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect.

“The research is pretty clear that students who have exposure to their potential career choice early on are more likely to stay in college and finish their degree. We are extremely appreciative of the Fenn Fund’s commitment and support,” said Gerri Jenkins, director of the Office of Counseling and Career Services.

KEYBANK FOUNDATION: FACULTY DIVERSITY The College introduced a Faculty Diversity Fellowship in January 2017, thanks to a grant from the KeyBank Foundation. The grant enabled Ursuline to hire recent PhD recipients Kristie Williams, Lisa Brown, and Abobo Kumbalonah, for two overlapping semesters each. These new faculty members were expected to teach, conduct research, write for publication and present a campus colloquium on a diversity topic of their choice. Each was paired with a veteran Ursuline faculty member for coaching and mentorship.

Sister Christine said that in seeking support from the KeyBank Foundation, the College “was maintaining its commitment to increasing under-represented presence on the faculty; enhancing the climate of diversity on campus; providing additional role models for students, particularly students of color; and providing two successive post-doctoral fellows with college faculty experience.”

ELISABETH SEVERANCE PRENTISS FOUNDATION: BIOLOGY LAB RENOVATION With a grant of $200,000, the Elizabeth Severance Prentiss Foundation funded the complete renovation of one of the College’s biology labs. Now a state-of-the-art facility, the lab provides an area for biology and nursing students to learn through experimentation and research.

• “Designing Ursuline,” a gallery exhibition of artifacts curated by students of Historic Preservation, and a public panel discussion with two of the architects of Ursuline’s buildings, Peter Van Dijk and Jack Bialosky, Jr.

JOHN HUNTINGTON FUND FOR EDUCATION: NURSING SCHOLARSHIPS

• “All Our Relations,” in which Northeast Ohio children created bird sculptures in recognition of species diversity on campus and a newly planted mandala of trees celebrates the College’s relationship with Pepper Pike and human relationships with all of God’s creation.

With the support of the John Huntington Fund for Education, Ursuline was able to assist 78 nursing students from Cuyahoga County with scholarship funds for the 20172018 academic year. The $250,000 grant makes college more accessible and affordable for many future nurses.

• “Eastern Edge: A Juried Art Show,” a gallery exhibition featuring work by artists living on Cuyahoga County’s eastern edge.

• “Glitz & Glam: Highlights of the Ursuline College Historic Costume Study Collection,” which included dazzling examples of 20th-century American apparel and accessories.

Notable Events

Ursuline Soared at “Come Fly With Us” Gala Ursuline transformed an airplane hangar into a stunning ballroom for a gala that soared with enthusiasm in April 2017. Come Fly With Us drew more than 300 supporters who mingled, dined on international cuisine, and danced the night away between a private jet and a cockpit simulator.

The aeronautical connection was Ursuline board member and Flexjet CEO Mike Silvestro, a member of the College’s Board of Trustees since 2012, who welcomed guests warmly to the private aviation company’s hangar in the Cuyahoga County Airport.

Ursuline English major Marcella McHenry delivered a heartfelt address that reminded all in attendance why they were there: to raise funds for student scholarships. A cross country and track runner and editor of Inscape, the College’s literary magazine, McHenry told the gathering how much she appreciated her scholarship assistance. “This college has given me more chances to grow and succeed than I thought was possible. I may not have been able to experience these wonderful things had it not been for the generosity of donors.”

“First Class” sponsors Swagelok and Carnegie Management and Development Corporation, along with 15 “Business Class” sponsors, 15 table hosts, wildly successful silent and live auctions and a “Call to the Heart” drive enabled Ursuline College to raise significant funds for student scholarships.

Women Who Light the Way Honored Author, Journalist Cokie Roberts U R S U L I N E C O L L E G E honored author and political commentator Cokie Roberts with its new Women Who Light the Way award on March 6, 2018, in a packed Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Roberts, who graduated from a women’s college, grew up in New Orleans, where the Ursuline Sisters first established themselves in the United States. She is a well-known fan of the Ursuline Sisters. As a regular political commentator for NPR and ABC News, Roberts provides insight and clarity to sometimes befuddling political drama.

She and her journalist husband, Steven V. Roberts, write a weekly column syndicated in newspapers around the country.

The sold-out event featured the award presentation and an on-stage interview of Roberts conducted by Ideastream reporter Ashton Marra.

All proceeds went to support scholarships for students who will light the way in the future.

Notable Events

Speaker Series introduced Global Perspectives As part of the 2017-2020 strategic plan, Ursuline launched a semi-annual lecture series that brings current female thought leaders to campus to inspire the next generation of women leaders. Global Perspectives: Inspiring Tomorrow’s Women Leaders brought Olympic silver medalist and professional track and field athlete Nia Ali to campus in the fall, followed by former CEO of Catholic Relief Services Carolyn Yauyan Woo, Ph.D. in the spring.

Ali presented an inspirational public talk titled “Learning in Strides” in October 2017. Ali, who specializes in the hurdles and the heptathlon, spoke about what it means to be a role model, how to stay disciplined in training and academics, and women in sports. An engaging speaker, Ali represented the USA at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she won the Silver Medal in the 100-meter hurdles. She helped her team make history that day, when the United States became the first country to win gold, silver, and bronze in the 100-meter hurdles. It was also the first time American women achieved a sweep in any Olympic event.

Woo presented “God is speaking. Are you listening?” on April 12, 2018, in the Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity in the Motherhouse of the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland. Her presentation highlighted her work leading the international, faith-based organization and the unique strategies of CRS. Woo had a distinguished career in academia – including a 14-year stint as dean of the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business – before taking the reins of CRS in 2011. She now serves as Distinguished President’s Fellow for Global Development at Purdue University and is author of the book “Working for a Better World.”

FACULTY NEWS Nursing Instructor Ashley Badders, MSN, was elected to the Northeast Ohio League for Nursing nominating committee.

Faculty Diversity Fellow Lisa R. Brown, PhD, presented a colloquium on “Adult Development and Issues of Misogynoir in Social Media and Popular Culture” in May 2018.

Dean of Graduate and Professional Studies James Connell, PhD, facilitated a session for the Jennings Educators Institute’s series, Empowered to Teach: Inspiring Deep Learning through Excellent Teaching. His September 2017 workshop for teachers and administrators was titled “Curriculum in and for the 21st Century.” He presented a full-day workshop on “Mobility, Demographics and the Achievement Gap in First Ring School Districts” in October 2017. He facilitated “The Teacher Academy” for the Literacy Cooperative of Cuyahoga County. In spring 2018, he was inducted into the Berea City School District’s Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame as a distinguished staff “alumnus.” He served the district as an administrator for 18 years, his last seven as superintendent.

A study of the wellbeing of women religious in Cuyahoga County conducted by adjunct nursing faculty member Mary Lind Crowe, PhD; Associate Dean of Graduate Nursing Janet Baker, DNP; Sr. Kathleen Flanagan, BA ’70, OSU; and Amy Petrinec, MSN ’04 is featured in the spring 2018 issue of The CARA Report, the quarterly newsletter of the Center for 14

Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University. The authors also produced a poster about their project for the Midwest Nursing Research Society’s 2018 conference.

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Mary Kay Deley, is partnering with the Holden Arboretum and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History to collect bird egg shells for research. Faculty and students analyze the shells using atomic absorption spectroscopy to test for heavy metals, the concentration of which can indicate population health and environmental conditions.

Professor of Mathematics Rosemarie Emanuele, PhD, contributed chapters and appendices to a new edition of Economics for Nonprofit Managers, published by The Foundation Center.

Professor of Fashion Constance Korosec, PhD, presented several public fashion shows for organizations including the Ross C. Nursing Instructor Amy Jackson, BSN, was elected to the Northeast Ohio League for Nursing nominating committee.

For the 2017 Faculty Lecture Series, Assistant Professor of Graduate Nursing Murray Mayo, PhD, presented “Interactions between Hospice Clinicians and Adolescents with a Parent in Hospice.”

She discussed her descriptive, qualitative study that includes data from 45 interviews with teens who were dealing with the impending or recent loss of a parent.

Jennifer Schwartz Mrazek, MAAT, chair of undergraduate art therapy program, has been appointed chair of the Undergraduate Education Subcommittee for AATA (American Art Therapy Association).

Nursing Instructor Noel Santa, MSN, was named to the Crain’s Cleveland Business 2016 list of “Who to Watch in Education.” The paper cited her innovative and engaging teaching styles meant to promote self-learning in her students.

Breen School of Nursing Dean Patricia Sharpnack, DNP, ’84 won the Linda Cronenwett QSEN (Quality and Safety Education for Nurses) Leadership Award in May 2018 at an international forum attended by nurse educators from the United States and beyond. The award honors an emerging nurse leader in the field of quality and safety education who has “significantly contributed to the education of nurses or student nurses through exemplary vision, influence, critical thinking, communication and role modeling.”

Dr. Sharpnack is lead author on an article published in the September/October 2017 issue of Nursing Education Perspective, titled “Pathways to BSN Education: Teamwork in Ohio.” The article details how a statewide coalition formed to address the key recommendations of a watershed report by the Institute of Medicine titled “Future of Nursing.”

Faculty News For the 2017 Faculty Lecture Series, Associate Professor Jenise Snyder, PhD, presented “Our Ever Changing Climate: What Sediment and Ice can Tell us about our Past and Future.” Dr. Snyder shared her experiences visiting our national ice core repositories, processing cores, and meeting with climate experts. She received a “Let’s Talk about Water” challenge grant from the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, an organization sponsored by the National Science Foundation, to screen an award-winning documentary, “A Plastic Voyage,” and organize a panel discussion with regional experts. The March 2018 event drew over 100 participants.

Dr. Snyder has had scholarly articles published in the journals Aquatic Botany, Ecological Applications, and Freshwater Biology.

Director of Graduate Admission Melanie M. Steele, MBA, was one of 50 people to receive YWCA of Greater Cleveland’s Distinguished Young Woman Award for 2018.

She was accepted into Leadership Lake County for 2017-2018.

She was chosen president of the Cleveland Area College Consortium, a group of 15 colleges that help adult students find programs to finish their bachelor’s degree or start a master’s degree. Steele presented at the National Association of Graduate Admission Professionals conference on graduate enrollment marketing.

Sue Sadler ’99 MA takes on “Wonderful Adventure” of Leading Prestigious Baltimore Prep School

Sue Sadler, a 1999 graduate of Ursuline’s master’s program in education, has finished her first year as head of Bryn Mawr School, a prestigious preparatory school for girls in suburban Baltimore. Prior to that, she spent 29 years at Hathaway Brown, an all-girls school in Shaker Heights, where she served in a number of roles, including science teacher, chair of the math department, director of the middle school, associate head of school and director of the upper school.

“In my first year as head, I loved diving into a new community and celebrating the joy of learning together,” Sadler said from Thailand, where she joined Bryn Mawr students on a “Culture and Community Development” trip over the summer.

“What a privilege it is! It’s been a wonderful adventure getting to know this smart, diverse and ambitious group of young women. Leading at Bryn Mawr has been an exciting way to put all of my education and experience to work,” she continued.

Sadler discovered a passion for teaching at a young age, despite her mother’s wishes that she choose another career. Any other career.

“My mother really tried to talk me out of it, saying that when she grew up, women only had three career options: teacher, nurse, or secretary,” says Sadler. “She wanted me to be a race car driver.”

Sadler was not to be dissuaded, however. Growing up in Wellesley, Massachusetts, her favorite pastime was to play school, and she did her first independent study of teaching in a fifth-grade

class in one of Wellesley’s elementary schools.

She graduated from Colby College in Maine with a BA in biology and a teaching certificate, landing at Hathaway Brown almost immediately upon graduation. “I was destined to be a teacher,” she concludes.

When it came time for the natural-born teacher to advance her own skills, Sadler chose to pursue her master’s degree at Ursuline based on its reputation for rigorous and high-quality education.

“I was supervising brand new teachers who were coming directly from graduate programs, and I thought my credentials should be just as good,” says Sadler. However, as a single parent of three young children at the time, she did not expect to enjoy the experience.

“I was surprised and delighted by how much I loved my classes and discussions,” Sadler recalls.

“Ursuline offered an excellent program tailored to teachers who were already fully employed, so the summer and evening classes were really convenient.” She also credits the leadership of former Ursuline president Sr. Diana Stano, whom she praises for keeping Ursuline “relevant and student-centered.”

It was Sadler’s top-notch skills and abilities, as well as her passion for educating girls, which sealed the deal with Bryn Mawr School. In a letter announcing Sadler‘s hiring last year, Grace Pollack, chair of the school’s board of trustees, wrote, “Sue stood out in a field of highly talented candidates from around the world with her outstanding experience and devotion to girls’ education both as a teacher and administrator,

“Education is freedom, and everyone deserves an education.” depth of perspective for what girls need to thrive today and into the future, and enthusiasm for a strong and supportive school community.”

Sadler, who is an avid skier, tennis player, reader, gardener, cook and traveler, is excited for this new phase of her career. “I am always going to pass along the joy of learning,” says Sadler.

Counseling and Art Therapy Students Serve Around the World

SOMETIMES IT TAKES VISITING A FOREIGN CULTURE TO REVEAL TRUTHS ABOUT YOUR OWN. That’s the premise

behind the service learning trips led by Katherine Jackson, PhD, assistant professor in the graduate Counseling and Art Therapy Department. Since 2013, she’s brought students, faculty, alumni and community members to serve children and adults through art therapy in nearly every continent in the world.

Over the last five years, they have traveled to El Salvador, Ecuador, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Nepal (twice) and Hungary. Every summer a group returns to the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota. Their October 2018 trip to Peru was at capacity in May and their summer 2019 trip to Tanzania is already filling up.

Jackson chose Hungary in 2017 because of two-time Ursuline alumna Zsuzsa Csepanyi BA ’99, MA ’01, who grew up there. Csepanyi, an art therapist at Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland, described a complicated relationship between Hungary’s relatively homogeneous Magyar majority and its largest ethnic minority, the Roma.

“It’s similar to our country during the civil rights era—and even now,” says Jackson. “The Roma kids get the least of everything. They have state-funded schools, but they don’t have proper clothing and shoes. A lot of them couldn’t draw. The (non-Roma) Hungarian kids are the ones who have computers in their schools and learn Spanish in kindergarten.”

The Ursuline group spent about a week in the town of Ózd with young Roma schoolchildren.

With art as their common language—and a boost from Google Translate—they worked on identifying feelings, playing games, and building relationships. One day they made crowns out of paper plates. Another day they turned more plates into animal masks. The kids labeled the crowns and masks with good things about themselves. This affirming exercise helps kids who feel marginalized identify their own strengths and claim them out loud.

With a ten-day trip, there’s no time for longterm mental health work. It’s really about a cultural exchange. “If my students can just understand the subtle and not-so-subtle dynamics of privilege or oppression there, and provide care and sharing and friendship—that’s what I really have in mind,” says

Jackson. The trips usually include service work five or six hours a day. Then the group spends the rest of the time visiting people who want to share their culture. Once in Ecuador they visited the home of an indigenous family to play music. In Nepal they observed sacred cremations at a 4,000-year-old temple.

The key to learning, says Jackson, is to “lean into your discomfort.” She wants her group to fully experience their hosts’ world. “If they sleep on the floor, we sleep on the floor. If they go to a Buddhist temple, we go to a Buddhist temple,” she says. “How do we really understand and connect with others unless we walk in their shoes for a little bit?”

Such an immersive experience can change how Counseling and Art Therapy students approach their work when they return to the United States. They see in new ways the cultural factors that influence Americans from many different backgrounds, instead of forcefitting them into mainstream norms. That perspective shift is familiar to Jackson. She grew up in the Congo with her missionary parents and got her first glimpse of America at age eight. “You end up having this weird sense of looking at your own country a little more critically,” she says. That experience, combined with St. Angela Merici’s pilgrimages, formed the inspiration for the service learning trips.

No matter where in the world they go, Jackson says they find commonalities. In some ways, kids without privilege are all very similar. They lack the basics; they often lag developmentally. But what leaves the biggest impression is their gratitude. “They’re always overjoyed over everything,” she says. “Even little fuzzy pom-poms can be the most exciting thing in the world.” And that kind of joy makes everything worthwhile.

The Ralph M. Besse Library:

Where the Past, Present, and Future Intersect

Walk into a library just a couple of generations ago, and you entered a world dominated by the printed word. A forest of bookshelves extended from one end of the space to the other, overflowing with books. And like an ancient forest, the library always carried a deep sense of both history and the present, of strong roots and emerging growth.

Also like an ancient forest, libraries were always places for people to nourish and grow their minds.

THE MORE THINGS CHANGE, THE MORE THINGS‌CHANGE Ursuline College’s library always has been focused on providing exactly that kind of intellectual nourishment for students, even as transformations in technology and society have driven major changes in how the library fulfilled its mission.

Remember that when the library was dedicated to Ralph M. Besse in 1985, Microsoft was just releasing its first version of Windows, computers had not yet taken over every conceivable process, and the word Google was more than a decade away from meaning anything to anyone.

As you walk through the library today, you can find evidence everywhere of how things have changed.

Suzanna SchroederGreen named director of Ursuline’s Ralph M. Besse Library has been promoted to director of the Ralph M. Besse Library at Ursuline College, where she worked for 11 years as the head of library electronic and media services.

Prior to coming to Ursuline, SchroederGreen worked as a library director at BrownMackie College in North Canton, and has worked at Cuyahoga, Lakeland, and Northwest State community colleges. She holds a master’s degree in library and information science from Kent State University and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Lourdes College. Schroeder-Green is a marathon runner and active participant in campus life. She lives in Painesville with her husband of nearly 20 years, Erik Green, and their son, Roland.

Schroeder-Green succeeded Betsey Belkin, who retired in 2017 after guiding the library through enormous changes in information technology over the course of 37 years of dedicated service to Ursuline College.

Today, computers provide Ursuline students, faculty, and staff with easy entrée to all that the digital world has to offer, including access to thousands of periodicals, far more magazines and journals than could ever have fit within the library’s physical footprint.

In this way, part of the evolution of the library is in what is no longer obviously there—you don’t see stacks of periodicals shelved along the walls because thousands more are available now digitally than could ever have been displayed before.

“The library can also provide millions of books to students, even if many of those books are not physically located in the library,” said Library Director Suzanna Schroeder-Green. “As with periodicals, many books can be found in digital format whether though the library’s subscriptions, open access resources, or interlibrary loan. Online access to resources is important to today’s busy student who needs access to scholarly information at all times of the day.”

How can the library of a small college offer so much?

The library’s partnership with OhioLINK, a statewide academic library consortium, makes this possible. OhioLINK allows the Besse Library to buy enormous amounts of electronic resources so that Ursuline students and faculty have access to as many materials as have their counterparts in Ivy League colleges.

ing Lab) electronic classroom’s large smart board dominates the room from its place on the far wall, and students may work at the computer stations located along the walls, or gather at the center conference table.

On the second floor, a range of larger and smaller study rooms can be found all around the exterior walls of the building. Some are equipped with white noise machines that allow students to isolate themselves from the

distractions that might otherwise filter in from outside the rooms, or to prevent their own noise from seeping out and distracting others.

Countless other changes have been made over the years, but at least as impressive has been the library’s ongoing commitment to preserving the past.

Honoring the Past Requires Collection and Preservation As anyone knows who has old family documents, materials degrade over time unless they are properly stored and handled.

A number of important items in the Ursuline College Archives have gone through restoration recently, among them: two diplomas, the original Ursuline College charter from 1871, and a batch of historically significant letters that include one written by Alexander Hamilton and another by Florence Nightingale.

All of these materials are very old and delicate, and required special care. The Hamilton letter, for example, is dated November 28, 1792. In it, Hamilton credits the “register of the Treasury” for $900, and he signs the letter as “The President Director & Company of the Bank of the United States.” This is a handwritten document with “iron gall ink on a wove paper support,” according to ICA Arts Conservation, whose art paper conservation laboratory was tasked with the document’s preservation.

According to ICA, preservation of the materials first required stabilization, and then, in the case of the letters, involved providing “new paper hinges and new mounting on inert archival materials.”

The final step was preservation “in appropriate custom-made conservation framing.”

A grant via the Institute of Museum and Library Services and through the Library Services and Technology Act (a federal funding stream administered in Ohio by the State Library of Ohio,) made these preservation efforts possible.

A M I D C H A N G E , M U C H R E M A I N S C O N S TA N T No matter what new technologies are adopted by Ursuline’s library, certain characteristics are unchanging, and a number of those can be attributed directly to Ralph M. Besse.

An enormously successful businessman, Besse was also strong believer in the value of higher education. His fierce commitment to Ursuline College began in the early 1960s, when he helped raise the necessary funds to make Ursuline’s then-new Pepper Pike campus a reality, and it lasted through his many years on the college’s Board of Trustees, all the way up until his death 2002.

As for the library that bears his name, Besse was, in effect, its advocate in chief, and his heartbeat still pulses throughout. You can feel it in the second-floor River Room, a conference room packed with Besse memorabilia and books about rivers, about which Besse was passionate. An interactive data projector and video conferencing capabilities now connect the River Room with the outside world.

In countless ways, Besse’s essence is stamped into the very fabric of the library, but that is far from the only thing that makes Ursuline’s library unique.

F O R T H E L O V E O F S TA M P S The second-floor Stamp Room houses one of the library’s most distinctive features, a stamp collection that dates back to before the library opened. The original collection “was held by the Ursuline Mother House, from donated collections,” former library director Betsey Belkin explained.

She added that, over time, as stamp collecting has fallen out of favor, many people with extensive collections (who in a different era might have handed down their stamps to children or grandchildren) have instead donated them to the library.

This has greatly expanded a collection that now includes thousands of stamps from all over the world, including the Vatican.

There is no funding to support the Ursuline’s stamp collection.

Instead, it has been lovingly organized and maintained by legions of dedicated volunteers.

Over the years, many Stamp Room volunteers have become dedicated to the library itself, often joining Friends of the Library and actively working to support the library in its efforts to both preserve the past and move decisively toward the future. 

DIGITAL HUMANITIES OPEN NEW DOORS TO LEARNING

There’s no getting around it: The Internet has forever changed the way we consume and share information. The digital age hasn’t eliminated the need for students to conduct research and write papers; rather, it now requires them to find a way to blend traditional methods of study with new technologies, in a field known as the digital humanities. Ursuline professors are taking full advantage of this discipline to engage and immerse their students, opening new doors to learning.

HUMANITIES IN THE DIGITAL AGE

Can you close-read a tweet? How do you curate an online exhibit?

Where do geography, history, and literature intersect? These are just a few of the questions Ursuline professors Pamela McVay, PhD, Bari Oyler Stith, PhD, and Katie Trostel, PhD, are helping their students to explore.

“The way we communicate has shifted with the advent of the digital world,” says Trostel, assistant professor of English. “While the traditional essay will always have its place, we can now upload this essay onto a digital platform and supplement it with photos, videos, interactive maps, and hyperlinks. All of this helps the student to present a more robust picture of the knowledge they have gathered.”

In a nutshell, the digital humanities expand upon the traditional hallmarks of a liberal arts education—research, critical analysis, and communication—with digital tools that allow students to deepen their understanding of a particular text.

DIGGING DEEPER Using story maps, like this one, students are able to explore beyond the limits of a traditional paper to gain a better understanding of a topic or text.

PLOT TING A COURSE FOR ASIA Trostel faces a particular challenge in teaching her Asian Literature course: How to engage students in texts that deal with a vast region that is largely unfamiliar to them?

“The books we read deal with conflicts like the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and the Iranian Revolution, but the students don’t necessarily have a good grasp of the geographical or historical context of the region we are studying,” says Trostel.

In place of a traditional paper, Trostel asks her students to use an online platform called ESRI Story Maps to create multi-media presentations. The program allows students to pinpoint a character’s

geographic location on a satellite map and then add links to relevant articles, videos, photos, and other data to help create meaningful context to the selected story, poem, or memoir.

Paige Salisbury, a math and biology major, was initially nervous about this approach.

“I’m not the most tech savvy person, but after working with the program for a few days I found it easy to navigate and really interesting to play around with,” says Salisbury. Her group was assigned to study The Lotus Singers, a collection of short stories by South Asian writers.

“Using the Story Maps, we talked about the history of the area, showed a map of where the stories took place, inserted a

video of a typical day in the life of a kid our age, and showed tons of pictures,” she says. “Writing a paper couldn’t even have scratched the surface of what we presented to our classmates; it really gave a greater meaning to the stories for all of us.”

This ease of sharing information with one another is a key component of the digital humanities.

Says Trostel, “It allows students to amplify their individual voices by connecting with one another. And, they can communicate beyond the classroom walls by sharing their work with a public audience.”

RAISING THE CURTAIN ON DIGITAL EXHIBITS McVay, professor of history, recently received funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities to further her training in the digital humanities after a successful experience with her Modern Europe history class last year.

McVay challenged her students to create a digital exhibition exploring the connections between the opera Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck and the history of modern Europe. Each student was responsible for developing an area of the digital exhibit, such as costume and set design, stage production, history of the composer, analysis of the music, and the history of the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale.

To help with their research, the students attended a live performance of the opera by Cleveland Institute of Music students at Kulas Hall, took photos of the costumes and set design, filmed an interview with the performers, and conducted a Skype interview with the director. They were then able to embed photos and video links from these interviews in the digital exhibit they created.

An important part of the process was having students experiment with several digital tools before selecting the one they felt would provide the best platform. As in any good experiment, they experienced some failure before finding success. McVay’s students finally settled on a platform called Prezi, which is similar to Microsoft PowerPoint but with more interactive options and ease of collaboration.

“The technology itself is never the goal,” says McVay. “The goal is to use the technology in a way that produces another perspective.”

That said, McVay knows there are definitely benefits to having students learn new technologies. First, with the ability to catalog vast amounts of academic knowledge comes greater accessibility to that knowledge, something that benefits both professors and their students. And ultimately, they may be able to use these technologies in their future careers.

“I see the digital humanities as a way for students to tell their own stories, as well as the stories of other people,” says McVay. For example, students in her Ordinary Women in World History class used to have to write out their interviews with women activists longhand or record and type up their interviews. Now, students can upload video interviews right to YouTube.

“They will never have to experience the terrible drudgery of transcribing an interview from scratch,” says McVay.

PUT TING WOMEN’S HISTORY ON THE MAP

Stith, assistant professor of historic preservation, is passionate about women’s history.

While researching the topic, she noted that despite Ohio’s rich history of significant contributions, women are under-represented in historical landmarks here. In fact, out of 72 National Historic Landmarks in Ohio, only about two percent are focused on women.

From this research came the idea to create an Ohio Women’s History Trail—similar to one that is being developed on a national level—and to involve her students in research to put more women on that map.

“Some of our students are studying the historic sites you might expect, and others have found sites I didn’t even know existed,” says Stith. Just a few they are considering for inclusion on the trail are the 1851 Ohio Women’s Rights A ssociat ion, the 1883 Equa l Rights Association of Painesville, the 1885 Ohio Women’s Suffrage Association, and the Cleveland Women’s City Club.

The next step in the process will involve having students decide the best way to bring their findings to the rest of the world using digital tools. That could end up being a dedicated Facebook page or a website. The students may also decide to present their findings to Clio, an educator-reviewed web-

site and mobile app that guides the public to thousands of historical and cultural sites throughout the United States.

“We really rely on our students for their fresh perspective,” says Stith.

“They’re so fearless about trying out the various ways you can use online resources. They’re very clear about what they think will work.”

While students benef it greatly from the research they can f ind online, Stith stresses that nothing can replace the traditional research of visiting sites such as Playhouse Square, which students visited in May, talking to people, documenting their impressions, and doing archival research.

“There is still a lot of material out there that we have to look at in person, and that’s always exciting for the students,” says Stith.

“The person who created those maps, those diaries, those letters; you’re holding onto something that they felt passionate about and

that transmits itself through the fingertips.”

Ultimately, it’s the combination of old and new research techniques that leads to success.

“Technology has helped me more easily gather and synthesize the information,” says Clay Fellows, one of Stith’s historic preservation students. “My practice in using databases and documentation strategies will prove useful in the development of my master’s thesis over the next year and a half.”

Says Stith, “Our students will go on a topic wherever their source materials lead them. That’s one of the wonderful things about the digital humanities; we don’t worry about whether it’s history, literature, or geography. We just want to engage the public and convince them that a particular site is signif icant and worthy of preservation.” 

Championships, Good Sportsmanship and Sorrow Mark Ursuline Arrows Recent Seasons

National Championships. All-Americans. National Tournament appearances. Over the last two years, the NCAA Division II era of Ursuline College athletics has exploded onto the scene both regionally and nationally.

JANELLE PERRY:

All American, All Heart

M AY 2 0 1 7 in Orlando, Florida, thensophomore track and field stand-out Janelle Perry entered the 100m hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with slim odds to come out as a national champion.

She quickly defied those odds by winning the race in 13.46 seconds to bring the College its first-ever national championship in any sport. In addition to the national championship, Perry earned All-American honors in the long jump earlier in the meet.

The national championship spring-boarded Perry’s already impressive career headed into the 2017-18 indoor championships in Pittsburg, Kansas last February. Perry entered the meet as the favorite in the 60m hurdles and she did not disappoint as

News of this kindness went viral, with the NCAA posting a story that read, in part: This is why we love sports, especially Division II athletics. Sports can inspire us to better ourselves in the classroom, in the sports arena, within our relationships, and as citizens in our communities. We love sports because it provides an avenue for complete strangers to form relationships through random acts of kindness. Finally, we love sports for producing young men and women of high character, such as Lott and Perry.

BASKETBALL

WHILE PERRY WAS racking up All-American honors, she was not alone in capturing national honors during the 2017-18 season.

Ursuline senior basketball standout Laney Lewis added several national marks to her resume to complete her stellar career in blue and gold.

Lewis captured statistical titles in NCAA Division II after she led the nation in rebounding, doubledoubles, and triple-doubles while also ranking in the top 10 in assists in top 25 in scoring.

She finished her 116-game Ursuline career as the program’s second all-time leading scorer with 1,600 points, just 27 points shy of the all-time record set by Jessica Wood, 2005-2009. Lewis will have her name etched in the record book for years to come in several categories including, rebounding, blocked shots, assists and scoring.

For her accomplishments, Lewis became the program’s first-ever All-Region First Team selection, which led to her being voted an All-American by the D2CCCA and by the WBCA (Women’s Basketball Coaching Association). She was voted Player of the Year by the Great Midwest Athletic Conference coaches for the third straight year and was a First Team AllConference selection for the third time. 

Athletics News LACROSSE PLAYERS STICK TOGETHER In the spring of 2017, the lacrosse team captured their second-straight G-MAC Regular Season championship and earned the right to host the conference tournament for the second time. Despite a torrential downpour most of the day – including throughout the entire game – Ursuline and Alderson Broaddus battled in a classic championship game between two of the conference’s original programs that eventually saw the Arrows come up short 18-13. Then-junior Cydney Bartlett was selected as the back-to-back G-MAC Offensive Player of the Year and Head Coach Ed Karasek was named the Coach of the Year for the second time.

BASKETBALL MILESTONES The basketball team won the 2016-17 Great Midwest Regular Season Championship after finishing 23-8, including a 13-1 in the conference, and hosted the tournament for the second-straight year. Despite a loss in the championship game, a strong schedule and regular season earned the Arrows a second trip the NCAA Tournament.

One of the off-the-floor highlights of the season was a trip to Hawaii over Christmas break. The team traveled to Oahu where they played two games and got to spend five days exploring Hawaii’s big island. The trip was highlighted by a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to snorkel, hike and experience Hawaiian culture.

SOCCER HIGHLIGHTS The 2016 season saw the Arrows soccer team end up in a familiar place in late October. For the fourth consecutive year, Ursuline played for the Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament

championship and came up short in a hard-fought battle with Davis & Elkins.

Freshman Jill Bohling took home the G-MAC Offensive Player of the Year and Freshmen of the Year award for her outstanding inaugural season with the Arrows. Bohling, along with Cassie Cripe, Rachael Strahorn and Helen Jazzar earned First Team All-Conference honors. Steph Chlad, Haley Knox and Taylor Dackin were chosen to the Second Team All-G-MAC for their strong seasons that helped Ursuline advance to the championship game.

The 2018 season saw the celebration of the team’s third straight G-MAC tournament appearance but also came with heartache and loss. Coach Karasek, the only coach in the program’s history, died of cancer in May. His passion and dedication to the Ursuline lacrosse program had made the program one of the most respected in the conference and in the region. He will be remembered by his players for his tireless work ethic and the success that they had both on the field and in the classroom.

The 2017 season was one that went up and down and saw several significant injuries but that did not keep the Arrows from making an impact come late October in the G-MAC tournament. Ursuline knocked off the #4 seeded Cedarville in a thrilling game in the quarter-finals that was decided by penalty kicks. The Arrows went onto lose 3-2 in the semi-finals against regular season champion Ohio Valley, a team that went onto compete in the NCAA tournament.

After about 10 years of summer Reunion Weekends, we have switched Reunion Weekend back to the fall for 2018. We are looking forward to welcoming alumnae/i and friends of both Colleges, especially those from graduating classes ending in 3 and 8 for their milestone anniversary years. Reunion Weekend will feature a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the UCAP program, an inaugural fun-run/walk supporting the athletic department, opportunities to cheer on the Ursuline Arrows soccer and volleyball teams, and food trucks by the soccer field for all to enjoy. As in the past, we will celebrate our alumnae award recipients at the Reunion Dinner. This year, we will celebrate a new honor, the Rising Arrow Award, to be presented to an outstanding recent graduate of Ursuline College.

Sister Christine and I traveled for regional gatherings in Toledo (my hometown) and Washington, DC to meet alumnae and friends and provide updates on happenings at the College. We have also tried a few new ideas for connecting with alumnae/i, including a group trip to a Cleveland Cavaliers game, a tour of the corporate art collection at Progressive Insurance, and a mini-fashion show in the Florence O’Donnell Wasmer Gallery exhibit, Glitz & Glam: Highlights of the Ursuline College Historic Costume Study Collection.

Reunion 2016

The weekend of June 25, 2016 drew alumnae from Ursuline and St. John College, with the Classes of 1966 celebrating their 50th anniversary.

(The Ursuline Class of 1966 was the last to graduate from the Cedar Hill campus!) Alumnae shared memories of those happy years and gathered at Landerhaven for Mass, a reunion dinner and award ceremony. In a touching gesture of remembrance and appreciation, alumnae helped dedicate a newly updated chemistry lab in honor of the late and beloved chemistry professor Sister Ann Gertrude Hill, OSU, PhD.

Reunion 2017

On June 23, 2017, we kicked off another Alumnae Weekend, this time adding a Golden Years Brunch. Graduates of the St. John and Ursuline Classes of 1967 seemed to enjoy this extra opportunity to visit and reminisce. Over the weekend, grads took in the 2017 Art Alumnae Invitational Exhibition in the College’s Florence O’Donnell Wasmer Gallery, toured the St. John College Memorial Garden and enjoyed their Reunion Dinner, awards ceremony and Mass together.

Lynnette Natale Nied ’81 was awarded the 2016 State Award for Excellence for the State of Ohio for Nurse Practitioners. The award is presented by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners each year to one nurse practitioner in each state who has demonstrated excellence in clinical practice.

Mary Kaye Bozza ’82 is beginning her 18th year as Judge of Lyndhurst. The Court, under her direction, sponsors several Make the Right Choice programs designed to educate drug and alcohol offenders, parents whose adult children are addicted to opiates, and senior citizens for safety. She is proud of the educational opportunities she has offered the local schools, from elementary education to graduate programs.

Automotive Technician-TurnedMed-Student Gives Back to Ursuline Carl Allamby ’11 started working on cars when he was 12 and opened his own automotive repair business as a young adult. He quickly learned that being good at repairs didn’t necessarily translate to being good at running a business. So he came to Ursuline’s UCAP program to pursue a business management degree.

“When I walked on Ursuline’s campus, I knew it was the place for me,” he said. He liked the inclass discussions and the opportunities to express his ideas.

Then came a biology course taught by a Cleveland Clinic doctor. From the first class session, Allamby knew he wanted to go into medicine.

So after 25 years in business, he returned to school as a medical student.

The former technician, who will graduate from Northeast Ohio Medical University next year, has shown his gratitude to Ursuline by supporting the Annual Fund regularly since graduation.

“Ursuline was the catapult to the re-creation of myself,” he said.

And when he needs a quiet place to study, Allamby still occasionally comes to the Bishop Anthony M. Pilla Student Learning Center. “It’s like being in your backyard.”
